Theatre director and artistic director of the Southbank Centre Jude Kelly marks the 350th anniversary of the first performance by the first English professional actress. Before the restoration and the reopening of the theatres after years of Puritan rule, boys and men had played women's roles. However, when Charles II came to the throne he requested that women be allowed on stage and the course of theatre history was changed forever when a woman took the stage in the role of Desdemona on 8th December 1660.Although little is known about who she was, Jude Kelly pieces together a picture of what life would have been like for the first generation of actresses. She visits the real tennis court at Hampton Court Palace to find out what the first performance would have been like, takes Celia Imrie to the site of where the first performance took place and tours the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in search of Nell Gwynn. Were the first actresses' victims of exploitation or women who exploited the situation to their own advantage? Were they whores or pioneers?Producer: Benjamin PartridgeA Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in October 2010.

With Beatrice weakening, the couple continue their journey to find their son but buried memories of their own lives are also stirring.David Suchet concludes Kazuo Ishiguro's powerful novel - a moving, mysterious and deeply philosophical book about how societies remember and forget.“It’s queer the way the world’s forgetting people and things from only yesterday and the day before that. Like a sickness come over us all.”The Romans have long since departed and Britain is steadily declining into ruin. In this desolate, uncultivated land of mist and rain, people find that their memories are slipping away from them. Utopias
First published in 1516, Michael Symmons Roberts examines the intellectual legacy of Thomas More's celebrated book, 'Utopia'. It is a book that generated an idea that has been hotly contested throughout the hundreds of years since its release.More had been on a trade mission to Antwerp, and spent much of his time talking to fellow humanist scholars like Erasmus about the notion of an ideal society and what it might look like. Out of those conversations came the book, a slippery tale that blurs fact and fiction and which has left readers ever since trying to fathom whether More was indeed presenting his island of Utopia, where equality is paramount and greed attacked, as a model society or as a salutary tale.Half a millennium on, Michael Symmons Roberts heads to Antwerp himself to find out more about the actual book, that so many make reference without ever having opened its pages. He finds out that partly for safety's sake (the text being one on level a critique of contemporary England) it was published abroad and in Latin; he also hears about its great popularity, how it led many to try and set up their own perfect communities, and examines the irony that More would rather have seen this book about an equal society burned rather than seeing it translated into the vernacular and therefore made available to all.Along the way, Michael also eavesdrops on figures from the BBC archives describing what their personal Utopias might look like - including Tony Benn, Jeanette Winterson, Aldous Huxley, Nawal El Saadawi and Ian Banks.First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2016.
SAT 09:00 Sisters in Satire: The Pioneering Women of Comedy (m000b07k)
From the dawn of broadcast comedy, women played a vital but largely overlooked role; more in the background rather than the forefront. What impact did the sisters of satire from the 60s and 70s have on the comedy we know today and what was their cultural influence? In the less enlightened sixties and seventies, women were often the joke, rather than making them. Just because they weren’t the stars of the show didn’t mean their influence wasn’t felt. June Whitfield, Eleanor Bron and Miriam Margolyes were all quietly but firmly making their name in comedies such as The Glums, The Establishment Club and The Betty Witherspoon Show. These women paved the way for comedians and actors such as Jan Ravens, Meera Syal and Linda Smith. Samira Ahmed in conversation with actor and director Arabella Weir, former radio producer and novelist Lissa Evans and stand-up comedian and actress Tiffany Stevenson discuss some of the best sitcoms from the Radio 4 archives and listen again to the joys of Week Ending, Goodness Gracious Me! and a Brief History of Time Wasting and assess the impact these funny women have had on contemporary comedy and the extent of their satirical legacy. This programme takes us on a comic journey from the early 1970s to the present day and celebrates women in satire.Producer: Belinda NaylorMade for BBC Radio 4 Extra

Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. British Ethnic
Singer Cerys Matthews and music expert Tristram Penna continue their investigation into the early days of the recording industry in the UK. They are in Cecil Sharp House, the home of English Folk Dance and Song Society, and are joined by Steve Roud, creator of the Roud Folk Song Index. In the first few years of the Gramophone Company's history, they were making records of many popular songs rooted in the folk tradition including many old work songs, and producer Fred Gaisberg first travelled the British Isles in 1899 to find and record them. He began in Scotland with pipers and singers, then going to Wales to record choirs including the Rhondda Royal Glee Society, and lastly to Dublin to record the very best of the local talents. These discs captured local folk songs and melodies but, with an ear for what might sell, Gaisberg nearly always added a piano accompaniment and gentrified them for the Gramophone's targeted genteel audience. The portable recording equipment they needed consisted of at least six crate loads and involved an interesting mixture of zinc plate, wax and toxic chemicals as well as an electrically driven recording machine. We end with a recording of English Music Hall artist Gus Elen and an English hit song which points to the future of the popular recording industry in the UK - pop songs leading us all the way from Gus to The Beatles. We also hear from academic Peter Adamson and Christopher Proudfoot, CLPGS President. The early recordings are courtesy of the EMI Archive Trust.A Sue Clark production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in November 2015.

Woods Beyond a Cornfield
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's radio poetry archive and chooses Woods Beyond a Cornfield.A beautiful, dark poem by Stanley Cook - a Yorkshireman - about events in the edgelands where he grew up. It evokes the translucent beauty of South Yorkshire and its harshness - especially the inhabitants' hard working lives. Threaded through it is the murder of a local girl who, "lost for something to do", plays truant one day, only to be killed by a local man.Cook couldn't abide poverty being romanticised. He cared about people who suffered hardship and returned home from his Oxford scholarship with clear-sighted passion. He has influenced Yorkshire writers including his publisher, Peter Sansom of the Poetry Business in Sheffield, who was mentored and taught by Cook.Liz White, Richard Stacey, Ruby-May Martinwood and the folk musician and political activist, Ray Hearne, read Stanley Cook's heartfelt poem - with a soundtrack recorded in South Yorkshire through the Autumn.Producer: Frances ByrnesA Rockethouse production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in 2014.

MON 06:30 Who found Machu Picchu? (b015cmrt)
The story of Machu Picchu's discovery is one of myth, court cases and controversy. The popular account involves the central character, the prototype for Indiana Jones, Hiram Bingham, who in 1911 stumbled upon the ancient ruins of an Inca city lost in the jungle. As Peru celebrates the centenary of it being found, writer and explorer Hugh Thomson follows Bingham's footsteps into the Andes to unearth the truth and the controversies about its discovery. So, was Bingham the first person to see Machu Picchu? A re-examination of his classic book, Lost City of the Incas, which describes the expedition and subsequent archaeological studies of the site, says otherwise. Behind the words is a determined and ambitious Yale professor who saw Machu Picchu as his ticket to world renown. In his quest, Bingham all too often blurred fact with fiction. As a historian, he was ill equipped to interpret the artefacts he'd brought back to Yale but nevertheless put forward suppositions about why the Incas built Machu Picchu and what they used it for. Inflating its importance and hence his own, these myths - for example, that it was a spiritual retreat for the Virgins of the Sun - are still perpetuated today. So what was its real purpose? The thousands of Inca artefacts Bingham took out of Peru have been cause for controversy as well, culminating in a fiercely fought court case. The Peruvian government sued Yale University for breaking the contract to return the Machu Picchu artefacts. Finally, the case has been settled and many of the artefacts have been returned - just in time for Peru's centenary celebrations, which are as much about reclaiming national pride and identity as world heritage.Producer: Dom ByrneA Blakeway production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in October 2011.

Episode 1
The end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire as seen through the lives of three generations of the Trotta family.Joseph Roth's most celebrated novel dramatised in two-parts by Gregory Evans. This is the story of the Trottas, a family of Slovenian peasants ennobled when Lieutenant Joseph Trotta saves Emperor Franz Joseph's life at the Battle of Solferino in 1859. Most of the action, however, is set in the early years of the twentieth century and concerns the next two generations of Trottas, a bureaucrat and a soldier: the Baron - stiff, guarded, but secretly loving - and his son, the feckless, disaster-prone Carl Joseph. The Radetzky March is a novel about the ending of things: love affairs, friendships, individual lives, dynasties, an empire, a world.Literary critic Harold Blom described Joseph Roth's The Radetzky March as "One of the most readable, poignant and superb novels in twentieth century German".Joseph Roth ...... A sound portrait of the Tyne Bridge, linking Newcastle and Gateshead. With recordings by wildlife sound recordist, Chris Watson, the sounds of the waves, the wind and the wildlife are combined with the voices of the river in this powerful and vivid portrait of a magnificent bridge. The earliest bridge across the Tyne, Pons Aelius, was built by the Romans near the location of the present Tyne bridge. After it fell into disrepair, a stone bridge was built in 1270 but this was destroyed by the great flood of 1717. The idea for the present Tyne Bridge dates back to 1883, but it wasn't until 1825 that work began. The design is based on the Sydney bridge. And whilst work on the Sydney bridge began first, the Tyne bridge was finished and opened first by King George V on 10th October 1928.The Tyne is a major artery through the city, the Tyne Bridge a vital span; a thoroughfare of business and trade, a link between Gateshead and Newcastle, between north and south. As a giant arch, the bridge is an engineering triumph and hugely symbolic; it spans place and time, and as a port-way it's symbolic of the changes which have taken place in the north east. Today, the wildlife has moved into the gaps vacated by the industrial past; the river is home to otters and salmon and the bridge is a nesting site for kittiwakes, a species of ocean-travelling gull. The birds which nest here and on the Baltic on the Gateshead river bank make it the furthest inland breeding site of kittiwakes in the world.Sound recordist Chris WatsonProducer: Sarah BluntFirst broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2010.

Episode 4
The second series of this sitcom from Danny Robins (co-creator Lenny Henry comedy Rudy's Rare Records), set and recorded in Sweden and starring Edinburgh Comedy Award-winner Adam Riches, Danny Robins and a cast of Sweden's most popular TV comedy actors.Geoff has moved to Yxsjö in northern Sweden, to start a new life with his girlfriend Linda in the (frequently frosty) bosom of her family. This year, new dad Geoff has plenty of fresh experiences to contend with, including three varieties of pickled cabbage, sinister Christmas elves and an unpleasant visit from Sweden's answer to the BNP. It's all worth it though for Linda (Sissela Benn, star of the Swedish version of The Office) and baby John. While Geoff and Linda now have their own place, he still has to deal with her disapproving Dad, Sten (comedian Thomas Orredsson from Crimes of Passion), her alarmingly flirtatious mother Gunilla (comedian Anna- Lena Bergelin) and her apparently suicidal, arsonist brother, Anders (award-winning stand up Fredrik Andersson).Geoff is determined to be more Swedish than the Swedes as he takes to his new country with renewed enthusiasm, and he has help, in the form of fellow expat, cynical Ian (Danny Robins), an unending source of (slightly misleading) information, and Soran (Farshad Kohlgi of The Killing), a Danish Kurd with Swedophobia.Episode 4: It's Summer and Geoff, Linda and baby Jon are off on holiday - bliss. Geoff has seriously romantic plans too, as they head further north for bright summer nights, skinny dipping and wild strawberries. But their idyll is soon under threat from mosquitoes, fish and the rest of the family.Writer: Danny RobinsDirector: Frank StirlingA Unique production for BBC Radio 4.

Edward Tyson
Edward Tyson, a physician and scientist, is regarded as the father of the study of comparative anatomy. Tyson was one of an early group of scientists who started to look inside animals in order to understand them and therefore learn more about ourselves. In a time before the category 'mammal' even was recognised Tyson's anatomy of a porpoise described an animal more similar to a pig than a fish without resorting to mythical explanations for this incongruity.Later Tyson was the first to note that a chimpanzee is physically more in akin to a human than to a monkey. These observations were only made possible due to Tyson's incredible dissection skills and knowledge of anatomy.Richard Sabin curator of large mammals at the Natural History Museum explains why Edward Tyson is his Natural History Hero.First heard on BBC Radio 4 in September 2015.

The traditional Working Men's Club is in a state of decline, as the heavy industries and sense of collectivism that supported them fade and disappears. Ian McMillan looks at the clubs of Doncaster to learn more about a movement that has provided social interaction, education, recreation and support to working class communities for over a hundred years.Doncaster is home to around 80 members' clubs, including Armthorpe Social Club and Institute, Rossington Miners' Welfare, Mexborough Concertina Club and The Trades Club. Some are thriving, some just about surviving. Around 60 of the town's former clubs are no longer in business.Doncaster is also home to brothers Dave and Keith Angel, local musicians who, having been brought up steeped in club culture, started out their own musical careers in these unforgiving yet grounding venues. Their lifelong affection for Working Men's Clubs has resulted in Dave and Keith completing a social history of clubs in the area, which was originally started by their Dad in the 1970s.With their help, Ian is on a mission to find out more about the origins of these clubs, how they have adapted and changed over the years, the reasons for the decline and what, if anything, is being done to keep the existing clubs alive. In addition to anecdotes from Keith and Dave Angel, the programme also features contributions from Ruth Cherrington, writer of Not Just Beer and Bingo!: A Social History of Working Men's Clubs, singer Lyn O'Hara, club officials and the working men (and sometimes women) who patronised the tap rooms and concert halls.Producer: Kellie WhileA Smooth Operations production for Radio 4 first broadcast in September 2013.

The Bed Under the Stairs
Batman was an orphan; Lisbeth Salander, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, was an orphan; Superman was an orphan and a foundling. Cinderella was a foster child. Darth Vader - well, they can't all be winners. Lemn Sissay returns to BBC Radio 4 with a comic and poetic look at the treatment of children raised in care, orphans and foster children in popular culture, comparing them with reality. Because it surely says something about how we view them that we create so many for fiction.Lemn will explore the gap between fiction and reality, based on his own experiences of growing up in care as well as those of some special guests.1. THE BED UNDER THE STAIRSIn this first episode, Lemn discusses his experiences as a foster child, comparing them to the life of Harry Potter. Like Harry, Lemn was never told the truth about what happened to his parents. Like Harry, he found his foster parents harsh and unforgiving. But, like Harry, he came through those problems, avoided the dementors, and grew up.As well as storytelling, comedy and poetry, Lemn imagines an interview with Vernon and Petunia Dursley - Harry's foster parents. Finally, they get to tell their side of the story.Written and performed by ... Lemn SissayProducer ... Ed MorrishLemn Sissay is the author of six collections of poetry. He has also written plays for stage and BBC radio. His radio documentary Child of the State was nominated for the 2010 Sony Awards, and last year's two-part series for Radio 4, Lemn Sissay's Homecoming was described by The Spectator as "a poignant, mind-stretching half-hour ... This was truly innovative radio", and caused The Observer to remark, "What a thing to hear in Radio 4's 6.30pm slot - the sound of genuine happiness; also regret, anger, wonder, bursting from the radio with the unexpected exuberance of a child dancing at a chamber concert ... terrific radio".Lemn was the first poet to write for the Olympics 2012 and received an MBE for Services to Literature. He is associate artist at the Southbank Centre, an (hon) Doctor of Letters, and currently the Chancellor of the University of Manchester. If you should Google "Lemn Sissay" all the returning hits will be about him. There is only one person named Lemn Sissay in the world.LEMN SISSAY'S ORIGIN STORIES IS A BBC STUDIOS PRODUCTION.

It's ancient, but no-one knows quite how old - the claim that it originated 4,000 years ago is open to question. What's beyond doubt is its place in oriental culture. The remarkable cave of Buddhist treasures discovered at Dunhuang on the Silk Road through China included a 6th century Go manual now kept in the British Library. Miniature Go boards and pieces have turned up in ancient burial sites. In the twentieth century, some of Japan's finest writers turned to Go for inspiration, following major games and probing the psychology of the top players. And, as the first atomic bomb fell, two of the world's best exponents of Go were playing a title match on the outskirts of Hiroshima. But Go is little known in the West. This is in spite of the efforts of one of the two players in what became known as the Atom Bomb Game, Iwamoto Kaoru, who spent his later years setting up Go Centres in Europe and the Americas. In Why Go?, Chris Ledgard explores the world of Go, talking to experts in the East and West about the game's history and culture, and examining some its ancient artefacts. Dr Finkel discusses Go's place in the history of games. After Go, he says, "you could argue that the world's board games went downhill." Susan Whitfield, the Director of the International Dunhuang Project, brings the fifteen hundred year Go manual out of storage and explains how it was discovered and what it tells us. Britain's two foremost experts on the game describe how they got hooked, and Chris Ledgard visits Amsterdam to examine Iwamoto Kaoru's legacy and find out why, in spite of all the time and money he spent, relatively few people in Europe play the game.Go's Chinese name is weiqi, which is often translated as "the surrounding game". It's a game of co-existence. Two players, one with black stones the other with white, place their pieces on the intersections of a board marked with 19 x 19 lines. The aim is to secure territory and the emphasis is on long-term strategy, subtlety, and not bludgeoning your opponent. Rob Foster, a translator of the Dunhuang manal, describes the game as "a conversation...it's hand talk".And the programme addresses the key question of whether - as some argue - Go reflects aspects of oriental thinking and is a game few western players really understand. First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 2010.

The ancient northern town of Waft appears in the Lonely Planet Guide with the advice: "Don't bother". THU 07:30 Little Monster (b02q78pq)
Little Monster follows the fortunes of new mother Karen (Sarah Hadland) as she struggles to get to grips with her little monster. No really, he is literally a monster. Or should that be she is.? Or even it is..? To be honest it's all a bit of a jumble, but they're opted for the name Benjy for now.Like all babies, Benjy (Cariad Lloyd) keeps growing. Horns mainly. Scales. Fangs. Tail. Karen never quite knows what's going to greet her when she unbolts the reinforced door of his nursery and turns the padlock on his cot.Not that he's dangerous, of course. Just very excitable. And strong. And surprisingly advanced for his tender age. While most babies lie in their cots looking sweet, Benjy is soon galumphing around the house and bringing in the remains of next door's chickens. And though he may be a monster, he's still Karen's monster. She loves him and she always will, no matter what he puts her through. And he's sometimes very well-behaved, especially when his Dad, Nick (Rufus Jones) or Grandma (Geraldine James) are around. While Karen has to cope with one very real monster, she also has to deal with her own 'monsters' - the monsters of guilt, envy and low self-esteem that gnaw away at her from the inside. She wants to be the best mother in the world and just ends up behaving like the worst.Written by Gerard Foster (At Home With The Snails, Horrible Histories) this is a darkly comic look at modern parenthood, set in our child-obsessed world of big buggies and Little Einsteins. In this pilot episode, Nick and Karen have planned their first night away since Benjy was born. But is it worth the trouble - and will they actually have the courage to leave him?CREDITSKaren - Sarah HadlandNick - Rufus JonesBenjy - Cariad LloydVal - Geraldine JamesSammy - Bridget ChristieNina / Receptionist - Hannah WoodSecurity Guard - Gerard FosterWritten by Gerard Foster.Produced by Ed Morrish

So profound was his frustration that Hume gave up ornithology altogether and turned his attention to botany, founding the South London Botanical Institute which encouraged the ordinary working person to make a contribution to science. Under the umbrella of Glasgow architects Gillespie Kidd & Coia, Isi Metzstein and Andrew MacMillan seized on the momentary experimentalism of the Catholic Church after World War II to revolutionise church design. This was a brave new world and the Catholic Church wanted their places of worship to meet the needs of a new era.In a culture never quite comfortable with the high modern influences of Europe and America, Metzstein and MacMillan drew on the ideas of Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright with unparalleled freedom.Their masterpiece was St Peter's Seminary at Cardross, which stood out like a spaceship in the modest construction yards of British architecture. It's a ghost space now, abandoned in 1980 just 14 years after completion. While most of their churches are still in use, their Modernist design and location means they stand like monuments to a very different time; a time when Catholicism in Scotland was expected to spread its wings.Jonathan Glancey explores Scotland's physical and spiritual landscape to discover more about the extraordinary lives of two of Britain's most talented architects.Producer: Caitlin SmithFirst broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in April 2013.

FRI 07:30 The Joy of Text (m0009zmg)
Debra Humphries and Gary Slaymaker had been nodding acquaintances for a number of years but, in March 2017, Debra used Facebook’s Messenger app to ask Gary if he had any stand-up gigs arranged in Cardiff. This innocent little enquiry started a conversation, which developed over the next few weeks into late night chats. It became clear they had a lot in common and shared a sense of humour. They met for a drink, and then an official first date and, following that, spent the entire week in each other’s company (and beds). Shortly afterwards, they changed their social media profiles to “In a relationship with…”Things couldn’t have been any better for the pair - until Debra’s 17-year-old son, Brychan, became ill. He was diagnosed with stage four cancer and underwent an operation. Despite the very best efforts of the staff at Cardiff’s Heath Hospital, Brychan died just two weeks after falling ill.Since that day, it’s been a matter of coping with the loss for Debra, with Gary doing his best to be a shoulder for her to lean on. The Joy of Text distils that year, through the messages and texts they sent each other from day one. It's sometimes raw, sometimes sweet, but often shot through with the quirky humour that made them fall in love with each other in the first place.Debra and Gary are an unlikely romantic pairing. She’s beautiful, quiet, and thoughtful - he’s not. They have seen pretty much the best and worst that life has had to offer throughout their first year together.Despite the ups and downs, the laughs keep on coming in this poignant and funny (honestly!) programme.A Slaycorp production for BBC Radio 4

Dumping and Proposals
Leading a successful life is terribly tricky and no-one is more painful aware of that than Jason Cook himself who has encountered more than his fair share of failure in his time.So who better then to dispense advice on how best to successfully negotiate the sticky social situations the fickle finger of fate flicks out, than a man who, like a modern day Job, has already suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous misfortune. This time he looks at the two-sides of the romance coin: dumping someone and proposing to someone, with regular guests Zoe Harrison and Neil Grainger on hand to help him bring his lessons to life. And with contributions from the studio audience too, there's plenty of advice on offer so you don't make the same mistakes as they have. Or at least take comfort in the knowledge that you're not alone.Producer: Sam Michell.
