To secure future resilience of crops in today's world there's a growing need to conserve the closest wild relatives of our staple crops.Kathy Willis discovers, given climatic threats to some of our most substantial crops such as coffee - for which the industry currently depends on a single species, the economic value of wild relatives of today's domestic crops is considerable. And as we hear, some important future crops are still to be found from previously overlooked plants. With contributions from Richard Thompson, Business valuations partner at Price-Waterhouse Cooper; historian Jim Endersby; head of coffee research at Kew, Aaron Davis; Kew's head of yams Paul Wilkin.Producer Adrian WashbourneMusic for the series was composed by Mark Russell.

Alan Johnson - Please, Mr Postman
Episode 5
In July 1969, while the Rolling Stones played a free concert in Hyde Park, future Cabinet Minister Alan Johnson and his young family left West London to start a new life. The Britwell Estate in Slough, notorious among the locals, came as a blessed relief after the tensions of London's troubled Notting Hill, and the local community welcomed them with open arms.Alan Johnson had become a postman the previous year and, in order to support his growing family, took on every bit of overtime he could, often working twelve-hour shifts six days a week. It was hard work, but not without its compensations – the crafty fag snatched in a country lane, the farmer's wife offering a hearty breakfast and even the mysterious lady on Glebe Road who appeared daily, topless, at her window as the postman passed by.Please, Mister Postman paints a vivid picture of England in the 1970s, where no celebration was complete without a Party Seven of Watney's Red Barrel, smoking was the norm rather than the exception, and Sunday lunchtime was about beer and bingo. But as Alan Johnson's life appears to be settling down and his career in the Union of Postal Workers begins to take off, his close-knit family is struck once again by tragedy.Epsiode 5:By 1982 Alan Johnson's union career is going from strength to strength with a position on the Executive beckoning. Work keeps him away from home and the Thatcher government at its height ensures life is tough for the union. But the biggest storm clouds transpire to be personal rather than political.Read by Alan JohnsonProducer: David RoperA Heavy Entertainment production for BBC Radio 4

But she's been told by the same long-suffering wife, that unless she finds a way to switch off, and soon, she's going to be unbearable. So Susan is going to look at her options and try to immerse herself in the pursuits that her friends find relaxing, to find her inner zen and outer tranquillity. Each week she will ditch the old Susan Calman and attempt to find the new Susan Calm, in a typically British leisure pursuit. This time, she visits the Scottish National Portrait Gallery with Phill Jupitus.Keep Calman Carry On is an audience stand up show in which Susan reports on how successful she's been - both at relaxing and at the pursuit itself - as well as playing in and discussing a handful of illustrative clips from her efforts. It's an attempt to find out how people find solace or sanctuary in these worlds and how Susan can negotiate her own place in them.Producer: Lyndsay FennerFirst broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2016.

Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. He asks whether these will survive the march of modernity and the consumerism, which comes with today's economic growth. Could spiritual India provide lessons for an increasingly secular world? This is the third time Mark Tully has attended the Maha Kumbh Mela, which happens every twelve years. Owen Sheers - I Saw a Man
Episode 1
"The event that changed all of their lives happened on a Saturday afternoon in June, just minutes after Michael Turner - thinking the Nelsons' house was empty - stepped through their back door."After the sudden loss of his wife, writer Michael Turner moves to London and develops a close friendship with the Nelsons, who live next door - Josh, Samantha and their two young daughters Lucy and Rachel. Stupidity
Radio 4 favourite Andy Hamilton presents a collection of observations and reminiscences from his personal life and 40-plus years working in comedy.Over this four-part series, Andy will be sort of remembering tales about Sport, Class, Religion and Stupidity. Through comic observations and personal anecdotes he will explore each theme, examining how much (or how little) things have changed in the 60ish years he's been on this planet. In this episode Andy looks at that age-old friend of homo sapiens, Stupidity. There will be no judgement here, however. This is a one-man manifesto for the celebration of imprudent behaviour. Over which heavyweight champion of the world has Andy accidentally spilled wine? How do you spot an email scam? And why should you always check the colour of your meat at a holiday camp?Andy was born in Fulham in 1954, read English at Cambridge and then in 1976 began writing comedy for BBC Radio, on programmes like Week Ending and The News Huddlines. In 1990, he and Guy Jenkin created Drop the Dead Donkey for Channel 4. Andy has spent much of his working life making acute observations about politics and family life. In 2007, again with Guy Jenkin, he created the massive TV hit Outnumbered, which celebrated the chaos of life with young children. More recently they created the highly topical Ballot Monkeys and Power Monkeys for Channel 4, which charted the absurdities of the General Election and then the EU Referendum. For over 20 years he has been playing the part of Satan in his Radio 4 sitcom, Old Harry's Game. Andy is also a popular panellist on shows such as The News Quiz and Have I Got News For You.With thanks to Corrie Corfield.Producer: Richard MorrisA BBC Studios Production

Sketch troupe So On and So Forth - featuring John Sherman, Nick Gadd and Martin Allanson - have performed together for the last five years, refining their particularly British style of sketch comedy. They have recently recruited top comedy actress Alison Thea-Skot to bring some class the proceedings. So On and So Forth is a sketch group with a very clear, slightly nihilistic perspective on the world - everything is funny if you look at it the wrong way.In 2011 they headed to the Edinburgh Fringe where they performed several shows a day, picked up rave reviews and developed webbed feet. With a growing reputation in the live arena they started filming sketches whenever possible hoping to revel in the untold riches of YouTube. Later that year they won the Cofilmic award for Best Sketch, and one of their online sketches featured on Comedy Central's hit US show Tosh.0 as Video of the Week which helped to ratchet up just shy of a quarter of a million hits on their YouTube page.Later in 2012 they were commissioned by BBC Worldwide to produce yet more sparkly new web sketches. In 2013 the team featured on Radio 4's very own show Sketchorama and, following those stand out performances and their online work, they have been given the opportunity to make their own series.Produced by Gus BeattieA Comedy Unit production for BBC Radio 4

The musicologist and performer Richard Rastall has unearthed and recorded many of the elder Milton's pieces including choral, viol consort and song settings. He shows what he has discovered and what it sounds like in specially reconstructed recordings of works that even scholars are unfamiliar with.As well as revealing John Milton the composer, discover the life of the man and his relationship with his son. Although a gifted musician, John Milton was not able to live on the earnings from his compositions alone. A scrivener by trade, he managed to free himself from the Scriveners' Company in 1599 and was subsequently able to afford a private tutor for his son and then provide for him when he took a place at St Paul's School and Christ's College, Cambridge.Emma also talks to Milton scholars and the early music group Fretwork, as they prepare and record John Milton's instrument works.First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2010.

WED 23:15 Don't Start (b06tvc3t)
Series 3
The Bath
Cardamon scented candles, kumquats and a debate over the virtues of shared bathing compared to shared showering occupy Neil and Kim.Frank Skinner's sharp comedy starring Frank and Katherine Parkinson. What do long term partners really argue about?Don't Start is a scripted comedy with a deceptively simple premise - an argument. Our couple fall out over another apparently trivial flashpoint and the stakes mount as Neil and Kim battle with words. But these are no ordinary arguments. The two outdo each other with increasingly absurd images, unexpected literary references and razor sharp analysis of their beloved's weaknesses. Underneath the cutting wit, however, there is an unmistakable tenderness. The first two series of Don't Start met with instant critical acclaim:"That he can deliver such a heavy premise for a series with such a lightness of touch is testament to his skills as a writer and, given that the protagonists are both bookworms, he's also permitted to use a flourish of fine words that would be lost in his stand-up routines." Jane Anderson, Radio Times"Frank Skinner gives full rein to his sharp but splenetic comedy. He and his co-star Katherine Parkinson play a bickering couple exchanging acerbic ripostes in a cruelly precise dissection of a relationship." Daily Mail"...a lesson in relationship ping-pong..." Miranda Sawyer, The ObserverAn Avalon production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in January 2016.

THU 06:30 Klatt's Last Tapes (b03775fy)
Dennis Klatt was an American pioneer of text to speech devices, enabling those without the ability to speak to have a voice. Before Klatt died in 1988, he produced the definitive history of speech synthesis, which included recordings he archived charting the progress of the technology in the 20th century.Using Klatt's extensive research as her cornerstone, Lucy Hawking explores the history of synthesizing speech over the last 200 years, up to current research, which suggests people are disturbed by hearing artificial speech which is too human. It was the showman and inventor Wolfgang von Kempelen who built the most celebrated speaking machine, in 1769. At Saarland University, in Germany, they have constructed a replica and Lucy tries her hand at some very basic mechanical speech. In the 1930s, Homer Dudley produced the first electronic device. By the 1980s, Klatt's was producing highly sophicated speech synthesizers, including the DECtalk system, which is essentially the electronic voice that is used by Lucy's father, Professor Stephen Hawking. We hear from Klatt's daughter Laura Fine, who worked with her father, as well as colleagues and researchers in the field of speech synthesis, and we raid the archives of the Acoustical Society of America (much of which was archived by Klatt) for recordings of the wonderful and sometimes weird speech synthesizers.Featuring: Jürgen Trouvain and Fabian Brackhane from Saarland University, Mick Donegan, Michael Cubiss, Simon Fitzmaurice and Laura Fine.Producer: Julian MayerSound Designer: Nick RomeroA Sweet Talk Production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in July 2013.
