SAT 02:15 A History of Britain in Numbers (b03j5czm)
Homes
Andrew Dilnot, chair of the UK Statistics Authority (2012-2017) tells the story of a transformation in personal life in Britain, through the numbers that capture change on the grand scale. He delves into the data for the big patterns and trends in history, finding new ways of thinking about the whole shape of the population - the balance between adults and children, for example, or the shifting shape of what we do with our lives, from infancy to retirement and death. He seeks answers in history to some of the problems that perplex us now, such as how badly austerity has bitten or the paradox of why no-one seems able to afford a house but so many people own one. And he tells these stories not just with data, but through people and the real experiences that bring the numbers to life.In the search for data to measure how we've changed, the programme counts rotten teeth and adds up what people ate, what they own and throw away. What did we earn through the centuries, how do we know, and what could we do with it? What was our health like, or our homes, our jobs or education? What was the status and experience of women? And how has it all changed? Each of these ten programmes takes one theme, to explore how far we have made progress, and why it might continue, or falter.HomesAndrew Dilnot tackles the history of our homes in numbers, looking for the big trends and statistical details over the centuries that might help explain why housing has become a national obsession. Continues next week.Producer: Michael BlastlandA Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4From 2013.

SAT 07:30 The Road to the National Theatre (m0003ltv)
A House for Shakespeare
James Naughtie traces the long road to the foundation of the UK's National Theatre, and explores whether the struggles and delays in fact resulted in a more versatile and creative establishment than elsewhere in Europe.France has had a national theatre since 1680, Greece since 1880. The National Theatre in London is a youngster by comparison, opening in 1963.For the homeland of Shakespeare, this may seem anomalous, but as James Naughtie investigates the reasons why the founding of a National Theatre took so long, he comes to the conclusion that the delays resulted in an unusually versatile, creative and popular cultural institution. In the first of two episodes, James traces the story from 1848, when the radical publisher Effingham Wilson publishes a pamphlet called A House for Shakespeare, to the years of the First World War when hopes for a fitting celebration of the tricentenary of Shakespeare's death were at first dashed and then met in an unexpected way. He speaks with Nicholas Hytner, Richard Eyre, Michael Frayn, Michael Billington and Jacky Bratton, as well as listening to the voices of Laurence Olivier, Sybil Thordyke and other theatrical luminaries in the BBC Archives, tracing a story in which the arts, history, politics and national identity share the stage. She is a former professor who survived the dark days of communism and witnessed Russia's violent capitalist transformation, during which she lost her beloved dacha. She welcomes Andrei into her home, even if she can't always remember who he is, and he in turn indulges her in endless games of anagrams, at which she excels.Andrei learns to navigate Moscow, still the city of his birth but with more expensive cars and coffee. He finds a place to play hockey, a cafe to send emails from, and eventually some friends, including an attractive and serious young activist named Yulia. But he remains an innocent abroad, a young man with no experience of Putin's Russia or indeed of the real world beyond the petty grievances and feuds of academia.Written by Keith GessenOmnibus read by Trevor WhiteThe first five of ten parts abridged by Jill Waters and Isobel Creed.Produced by Jill WatersA Waters Company production for BBC Radio 4

Dorset Rewritten
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's radio poetry archive and selects Dorset Rewritten featuring the dialect poetry of William Barnes. Before Thomas Hardy, there was another Dorset poet called William Barnes. Scrape a finger across Hardy's Dorset and you'll find Barnes' underneath. He was Hardy's friend, forebear and inspiration.William Barnes was fascinated by language and the dialect used by the people around him. But today he's been all but forgotten. Barnes inspired Hardy, Larkin, and Hopkins yet Britain has never taken him to its heart. Barnes was fascinated by language, obsessed even. He was a polymath. He believed in Pure English and wanted to distill words to their Anglo -Saxon origins; 'photograph' for instance, becomes, 'sun-print'. Curious then that while his poetry is thick with dialect, Barnes spent most of his life teaching English in its conventional form, as a curate and a school master.A former Poet Laureate, a young teacher from Barnes' Blackmore Vale, and a dialect poet from the Black Country reflect on the curious verse of 'the other' Dorset poet.Presenter: Daljit Nagra.Produced by Clare Salisbury.First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2014.

MON 06:30 Hunt/Lauda (b01rfy5f)
Racing driver Vicki Butler-Henderson recalls one of sport's most intense rivalries as swashbuckling British playboy James Hunt took on Formula One World Champion Niki Lauda, a man who by the August of 1976 would be fighting for his life in a German hospital.Motorsport legends Murray Walker, journalist Nigel Roebuck and Niki Lauda himself tell how Hunt, in his British Mclaren, chased the Austrian's scarlet Ferrari in a 200mph season-long duel from Brazil to Japan. It wasn't long before the handsome, blonde, badly behaved Hunt became Britain's number one sporting hero, filling the front and back pages of international newspapers in the scorching summer of '76 with his outrageous car control and equally outrageous personal life.Thrilling archive and first hand testimonies from three-time world champion Lauda and famed Austrian commentator and author Heinz Pruller tell how, in the August of that year, Ferrari's golden boy crashed heavily at the notorious Nurburgring circuit in Germany. His car burst into flames, and left Lauda, stricken with terrible burns, to receive the Last Rites. What followed remains one of sport's most heroic chapters as Lauda went from death's door to returning to the track, battle scarred and bleeding, taking the fight with Hunt to the final race of the year and setting up a gladiatorial showdown amid monsoon conditions at the Japanese Grand Prix.Producer: James RobertsFirst broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2013.

Education
Andrew Dilnot, chair of the UK Statistics Authority, tells the story of a transformation in personal life in Britain, through the numbers that capture change on the grand scale. Each of these ten programmes takes one theme, to explore how far we have made progress, and why it might continue, or falter.6. Education.Andrew looks into the data concerning education, and finds a story of a sudden spread of privilege, largely in the space of a century or two - first in school, then in university. In other words, it's a story about 'access', the modern buzzword for an old problem.Producer: Michael BlastlandA Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4.

Abridged from Richard Benson's epic family saga The Valley, the focus of this Book of the Week is on the story of the author's grandmother - Winnie Hollingworth (1909 - 2002) - and her life in the mining villages of the Dearne Valley in South Yorkshire. This remarkable social history draws on years of research, interviews and anecdote which chart generations of carousing and banter, tears and fights all set against the background of a close-knit community where almost everybody worked either in the mines or the mills.Richard Benson's first book, THE FARM which related the story of his own parents and brother and their livelihood in the Yorkshire Wolds was described as ' an extraordinary mixture of hardness and tenderness, wit and slog.. wonderful ' Ronald Blythe author of Akenfield. It went on to be a no.1 bestseller. This new book is a powerful and moving achievement - it follows Winnie from her first romantic encounter: 'her heart beating hard and fast down in her whalebone and elastic' to her final years sitting in the lounge of a long rubber-tiled room with high-backed chairs around the walls.. ' where 'the residents either roost mutely or chat while their eyes search the room for a younger person who might play the piano for them.'Ep. 1 : Miner, Walter Parkin brings his wife Annie to the Dearne Valley; at the age of fourteen their daughter Winnie goes into service, but her father's unpredictable temper exacerbated by war injuries, does not make her life easy.Read by Richard StaceyProducer: Jill WatersAbridged and directed by Jill WatersA Waters Company production for BBC Radio 4.

TUE 06:30 Star Spangled Hendrix (b00tg2m0)
When Jimi Hendrix returned to his native America as a star, the country he knew had changed. This programme, presented by Tom Robinson to tie in with the 40th anniversary of the guitarist's death, explores the pressure Jimi was under to make an explicit political declaration.Tom explores Hendrix's 14 months in the Screaming Eagles 101 Airborne Division that saw him parachute a total of 26 times before he was invalided out with a broken ankle. Brother Leon Hendrix discusses his elder bother's time in the military, along with comments from author Charles Sharr Murray.Singer and friend Eric Burdon explains how, after the riots in Grosvenor Square, Jimi trotted out the American government's party line on Vietnam - the so-called "Domino Theory".The Soft Machine supported Hendrix as they travelled across America and drummer Robert Wyatt recalls how Jimi responded to media questions about the war, and the emergence of the Black Power movement. Hendrix was receptive to the Black Panther Party and found the Seattle Chapter of the organisation run by two former high school friends. Both Panthers, Aaron and Elmer Dixon talk about how receptive Hendrix was to the cause. The programme culminates with Jimi's Woodstock Festival performance of 'The Star Spangled Banner', an eloquent (and wordless) statement against the Vietnam war. In retrospect, it can also be read as a swan song for the era of peace and love and for Hendrix himself, who died in his sleep the following year. Jimi Hendrix is more than a blues guitarist who got lucky in the 60s. He did the best he could to be his own man without openly taking sides, and we are still trying to get to know him 40 years after his death.Producer: John SugarA Sugar production for BBC Radio 4.

WED 06:30 Gauguin: The Right to Dare (b00txhf5)
Paul Gauguin asked August Strindberg to write an introduction to his catalogue exhibition. In response, Strindberg wrote passionately, but regretfully that he couldn't as he didn't like Gauguin's work and while he struggled to explain his antipathy, he wrote "What is he then? He is Gauguin, the savage who hates the restraints of civilisation, who has something of the Titan who, jealous of the creator, makes his own little creation in his spare time, the child who takes toys apart to make others, the one who renounces and defies, preferring to see the sky red, rather than blue with the crowd."By the time he's written these words he begins to understand this controversial artist's work and exclaims "Upon my word, it seems to me that, now I've become excited writing, I'm starting to have a certain understanding of Gauguin's art.The last romantic, the leading light in Symbolist painting, the primitive sophisticate, 'decivilising' painter of the French colonial tropics and revolutionary colourist - Paul Gauguin's work shaped modern art. His rejection of the bourgeois Parisian lifestyle of a stockbroker and wild escape to an archipelago of tiny, remote Pacific islands is the stuff of modern artistic legend. But to this day he remains a very controversial figure, lauded on the one hand and vilified by critics on the other. Our title is taken from Gauguin's life-maxim - that he demanded "The right to dare to do anything." The 'right to dare' goes to the heart of our argument here - and of our assessment of the contemporary importance of Gauguin's art . We investigate the ways in which Gauguin pushed at the boundaries of convention both in art and life and explore the legacy of that daring in terms of Gauguin's influence today.Producer: Kate BlandA Just Radio production for BBC Radio 4.

Women
Andrew Dilnot, chair of the UK Statistics Authority, tells the story of a transformation in personal life in Britain, through the numbers that capture change on the grand scale. Each of these ten programmes takes one theme, to explore how far we have made progress, and why it might continue, or falter.9. WomenThe changes in women's lives have been vast, and many of them have come in a blink at the end of recorded history. Episode 4
' where 'the residents either roost mutely or chat while their eyes search the room for a younger person who might play the piano for them.'Ep 4. Life in the Dearne changes with the outbreak of the Second World War. Harry continues to develop his musical and entertaining career, with more nights out on the circuit.Read by Richard StaceyAbridged and directed by Jill WatersA Waters Company production for BBC Radio 4.

Dick Francis
The date is 1956, Aintree, and Dick Francis is riding the Queen Mother's horse to victory in the Grand National. Except Devon Loch collapses bizarrely to the ground within sight of the finishing post. The jockey later says that he never recovered from this defeat. But the strange case of Devon Loch and the most famous Grand National of them all is the making of Dick Francis, who becomes both a household name and a best selling author too.Martin Broughton, chairman of British Airways, the British Horse Racing Board and - for a while - Liverpool FC, chooses Dick Francis as his example of a man who succeeded in two careers. The Francis novels have sold in millions. Philip Larkin loved the opening lines: "There was a godawful cock up in Bologna," begins The Danger. But there have been question marks over whether the books were all his own work. Mischievous biographer Graham Lord tells Miles Warde why he thinks Dick's wife, Mary, was responsible. "Garbage," says Martin Broughton. Expert opinion comes from Jonathan Powell, racing correspondent of the Mail on Sunday and a man who knew Dick Francis in his later years. The presenter is Matthew Parris, the producer Miles Warde.

' where 'the residents either roost mutely or chat while their eyes search the room for a younger person who might play the piano for them.'Ep 5. Children become adults, and Winnie and Harry grow frail, but there are still surprises in store.Read by Richard StaceyPRODUCER: JILL WATERSAbridged and directed by Jill WatersA Waters Company production for BBC 4Extra.
