SAT 01:30 The Art of Radio Times (b03bfsyw)
Peter Day tells the story of the outstanding British graphic artists who made Radio Times magazine their canvas.
The idea that a broadcasting listings magazine should provide the opportunity for writers and artists to produce some of their finest creative work seems perhaps a little far-fetched in the present era of TV listing magazines and supplements. Yet Radio Times, which first appeared on bookstands on 28th September 1923, was a great nurturer of artistic talent.
It started with cartoons - the early magazine loved a gentle 'Punch'-like joke - but soon Radio Times evolved its own individual graphic idiom, using line drawings and motifs, alongside more conventional photographs, to illustrate the imaginative world of radio, in particular. In the magazine's heyday, an elegant Eric Fraser cover would regularly grace the bumper-selling Christmas edition, and 1953's Coronation Number became a collector's item with Fraser's simple and noble heraldic theme.
Alongside Eric Fraser, amongst the great British artists to create some of their most distinguished work for Radio Times were Edward Ardizzone, Val Biro and Victor Reinganum; Bob Sherriffs contributed thumbnail caricatures in the early years and 50 years later Peter Brookes, before becoming a fixture on The Times was a regular contributor.
In this programme, Peter Day explores the graphic heritage that Radio Times fostered with those who drew and those who commissioned for it.
Producer: Simon Elmes
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in September 2013.

Bond's renegade action leads him to Washington DC, where he discovers a web of geopolitical intrigue and witnesses fresh horrors.
Even if Bond succeeds in exacting his revenge, a man with two faces will come to stalk his every waking moment.
Written by William Boyd, who is the author of one work of non-fiction, three collections of short stories and thirteen novels, including the bestselling historical spy thriller Restless - winner of the Costa Novel of the Year - and Any Human Heart, in which the character of Ian Fleming features. Among his other awards are the Whitbread First Novel Prize, the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Prix Jean Monnet. Five stories to gobble you up. Angela Carter's iconic collection of fairy stories, adapted for radio by Olivia Hetreed.

Controversially influenced by De Sade, she embraced the erotic, explored our deepest and darkest urges, and subverted the roles of hunter and prey, master and mistress so that, instead of male sexuality, it is the female that becomes transgressive and powerful.

Strength
Mark Watson reignites his quest to improve the world, nimbly assisted by Tim Key and Tom Basden.
As broadcast live in November 2011 - Mark invites the audience join in via tweets and messages to work out how we can all make the world a better place.
Asking the big questions crucial to our understanding of ourselves and society - Mark kicks off with a look at "Strength".
Strength comes in many forms. We all need to be strong sometimes in life, whether we're dealing with an emotional fall-out or carrying a really heavy dog to the vet's. Some have inner strength, like people who survive divorce etc; some have outer strength, like guys who pull buses with their teeth in competitions.
But can strength be - ironically - a weakness? Strength can have its downsides. Our fondness for displays of strength has led to disastrous episodes like wars breaking out and 'Gladiators' being brought back. Mr Strong, in the Mr Men books, got strong by eating a barn full of eggs, but must have suffered terrible side-effects. How can we be strong, but remain human?
Mark Watson is a multi-award winning comedian, including the inaugural If.Comedy Panel Prize 2006. He is assisted by Tim Key, winner of Edinburgh Comedy Awards 2009 and Tom Basden who won the If.Comedy Award for Best Newcomer 2007.

This was the title poem of the collection published in 1964 that made Larkin famous. Poet Jean Sprackland, who teaches Larkin and whose father, a librarian, met him professionally, retraces the train journey at the heart of the poem.
She considers Larkin's views about marriage, about class and about the 'state of Britain', against the background of the poet's own seemingly quiet life in the provincial town of Hull.
For many, Whitsun Weddings is Philip Larkin's most characteristic poem, expressing his detachment from the crowd and from love and marriage of the ordinary sort.
With James Booth, Andrew Motion, John Osborne and Larkin's surviving mistress, the 'third woman' Betty Mackereth.

"All my fortune, and this house itself and its garden, came out of a bottle not much bigger than a pint."

Keawe reasons that the bottle should be easy enough to pass on once he has gained his heart's desire - but it must be sold at a loss, and the price drops with every trade...
Robert Louis Stevenson travelled the Pacific from 1888, finally settling in Samoa in 1890 where he lived until his death in 1894. Inspired by his travels he took the Samoan name Tusitala - Teller of Tales. King of the one-liners, Milton Jones returns BBC to Radio 4 for an amazing 10th series in a new format where he has decided to set himself up as a man who can help anyone anywhere - whether they need it or not. Because, in his own words, "No problem too problemy".
But each week, Milton and his trusty assistant Anton set out to help people and soon find they're embroiled in a new adventure. So when you're close to the edge, then Milton can give you a push.
This week, Milton Jones is asked for help because there are ugly rumours about the local farm going too far with its GM crops. At least, that's what the vegetables are saying.

Nikolai Leskov - Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk
This new dramatisation by Marty Ross of the classic 1865 novella by Nikolai Leskov tells the dramatic story of Katerina, whose provincial life in 19th century Russia, married to an older man she has never loved, is transformed by the arrival of attractive philanderer, Sergei.
Katerina embarks on a passionate affair and, in her state of heightened emotion, she is determined to destroy anything that stands in her way. With her husband working away, and her relationship with Sergei on the point of exposure in the close knit farming community, she begins by dispensing with her father in law, but soon it becomes inevitable that further murders will be necessary to sustain her ferocious desires.
Shakespearean in both its language and emotional intensity, Katerina is portrayed as an anti-heroine of compelling intensity. The story, perhaps best known as the source for Shostakovich's famous opera of the same name, is by a Russian writer less well known than the likes of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, but whose work was much admired by Chekhov and Gorki, a rural Russian 'film noir'.

WED 06:30 Put Your Hands Together (b00sq1vv)
In a self-consciously clap-happy exploration of one of the most delightful and satisfying forms of human action and expression, Nick Baker investigates the meanings and motivations, the sounds and symbolism, the elation and frustration of ritually striking one hand with another.
The clapping rhythms of football, flamenco, the nursery and the Pentecostal church are all biologically linked yet subtly different. In this anatomy of a basic human ritual, Nick has collected claps as far apart as Fiji - where a clapping ritual accompanies a narcotic-taking ceremony - and China, where young women on busy high streets clap to attract attention to what's on offer in the stores. Choreographer Luke Creswell, an expert clapper, collects clap-routines in bars all over the world.
What's linked in all cases, according to Professor Colwyn Trevarthen, is humanity's attunement to one of its many internal biological clocks - the one that gives us walking, chewing and nodding our head. He invites listeners to join in with a simple experiment to demonstrate the rhythm of life.
Babies clap early & show awareness of hands in the womb. The clap is not the basis of language development, it is language development. It is display, performance, shared meaning & shared time. Gospel singer Ruby Turner provides musical commentary on how the hand clap moves from babies, through Sunday School, the playground and the church towards soul and R and B.
Do our biological predecessors clap? Perhaps we've been exposed to too many tea commercials. Or maybe chimpanzees have been too exposed to us, primatologist Alison Fletcher explains.
