With the help of Mrs McGibbet, yet another spirit from her past, Alison learns the worst. Meanwhile, Colette goes back home to Gavin, and the two of them try to remember why they split up in the first place. Alison's appalling spirit guide Morris realises she's lost to him forever now that she has not only faced down her demons but has committed a good deed and will go on to commit more. Series 3
Soul II Soul (A-Side)
John Wilson talks to Jazzie B and Caron Wheeler of Soul II Soul about their 1989 album 'Club Classics Vol 1' including the global hit Back to Life. Including exclusive performance by the whole band.
Soul II Soul is one of the most successful British black groups of all time. Their ethos of 'a happy face, a thumping bass for a loving race' and the sound of their debut album, released in 1989, defined a time and place in the UK's musical history. Featuring the huge hits 'Back To Life' and 'Keep On Moving' the album took London's multicultural underground club culture into the mainstream and achieved worldwide success. 'Club Classics' mixed the sounds of a burgeoning DJ scene with Jazzie B's distinctly British take on rap and the colossal vocal talents of Caron Wheeler.
Complete versions of the songs performed in the programme (and others) can be heard on the 'Mastertapes' pages on the Radio 4 website, where the programmes can also be downloaded and other musical goodies accessed.
Mastertapes is new programme in which John Wilson talks to leading performers and songwriters about the album that made them or changed them. Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios. Each edition includes two episodes, with John initially quizzing the artist about the album in question, and then, in the B-side, the audience puts the questions. Both editions feature exclusive live performances.
The B-side of this programme, where it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions, can be heard tomorrow at 3.30pm.

SAT 01:30 The Big Noise (b00sqkgj)
A music project in Scotland is aiming to improve life for the kids of Stirling.
The Simon Bolivar National Youth Orchestra under conductor Gustavo Dudamel stole the show at both the Proms and the Edinburgh Festival, offering real proof of the talent and virtuosity that has emerged from the El Sistema programme in Venezuela.
Can Scotland's version of El Sistema - dubbed The Big Noise - achieve as much in the deprived area of The Raploch near Stirling? Lesley Riddoch finds out.
In June 2008, Sistema Scotland, the brainchild of former bishop and current chair of Creative Scotland Richard Holloway, got underway in the Raploch. Its aim - to inspire and galvanise the education and motivation of children from all backgrounds through involvement in orchestral musicianship. Ability is irrelevant. Anyone can join.
It's a project that's not lacked critics. Some argue it takes attention and money away from existing outreach projects. Others resent the insistence on classical music. Richard Holloway is convinced it will boost confidence, pride and empathy, and thereby articulacy and educational ability, both in children and in the wider community.
Two years on, the Big Noise's first full orchestra is launched and Lesley Riddoch takes stock to analyse what the Venezuelan initiative can do in a UK context.
Producers: Amanda Hargreaves and Bronwen Tulloch.

SAT 07:15 Incarnations: India in 50 Lives (b072n5xh)
Jinnah: The Chess Player
Professor Sunil Khilnani, from the King's India Institute in London, looks at the life and legacy of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. Descriptions of his early life do not sound like someone who would go on to lead India's Muslims: he spoke English, dressed impeccably in Western clothes from Savile Row, smoked cigarettes and, according to some accounts, consumed alcohol and ate pork. Yet it was Jinnah who, along with others, publicly assented to the partition of India which, carried out in haste, would give roughly half of India's Muslims political autonomy, cause around a million deaths, displace some 14 million people and transform the geopolitics of the world.
Producer: Mark Savage
Music: Talvin Singh.
SAT 07:30 Touchline Tales (b01p0vfd)
Series 3
Episode 1
Old friends Des Lynam and Christopher Matthew return with a third series of the programme in which they head to sporting venues, in order to enjoy, observe, reminisce and trade tales about some of the greatest pleasures in their lives. This time round, they muse and mutter during a training session at a boxing gym and they reminisce and recount their own experiences of Real Tennis during the British Open. But they begin the series amongst the youthful of a school rugby match at Rugby School.
As a commentator and friend of sporting stars, Des has a fund of stories to tell, and insights to reveal, about the men and women in professional sport - their lives, their characters, their training regimes, their triumphs and their disasters. But Christopher more than matches him with his own experiences as a lifelong spectator at the highest levels of sport (and, like Des, an occasional participant at the lowest), as well as with his observations on sporting events he finds himself attending for the first time.
Indeed, amusing, informative and entertaining talk between old friends is what these programmes are all about.
Recorded entirely on location, their extended discourses have been edited down to a seamless half hour - with each programme capturing the atmosphere, the passion, the frustration, the humour and, at times, the sheer quaintness, of entertainments regularly enjoyed by millions of people up and down the land.
Producer: Paul Kobrak.
SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 (b03ddnfm)
Not Enough Hours in the Day
In this Archive on Four Claudia Hammond traces the history of the time use survey. She explores how social change has transformed the way people use their time, with more women working outside the home and the rise of supposedly labour-saving devices. These days men have an average of 5 hours and 48 minutes spare and women have 5 hours and 23 minutes, far more time than most people realise. Going back to the BBC archives and others such as those at Sussex University Claudia compares now with the past.
Eighty years ago the BBC conducted Britain's first ever survey of time use. Its aim was to discover whether anyone would have time to take up a brand new leisure activity - watching TV. In fact last year's time use survey in the US tells us that if people gain any unexpected spare time they spend it watching TV.
But we are unreliable chroniclers of our time: even in the last fortnight we remember only between nine and fifteen things we have done.
The programme will trace the history of the time-use surveys and why they are much harder to conduct than you might think. People hate filling them in. Lawyers have to account for every six minutes of their time in order to charge the right clients, so they're experts on time use, but they detest doing it because it reminds them how fast time goes.
Using the BBC written archives and first-hand accounts of time-use from the Mass Observation Archive at Sussex University Claudia follows the changes in the way time-use has been measured.
We'll also learn hear the idiosyncratic stories of the individuals who recorded their own time use. The Reverend Robert Shields has written what is thought to be the longest diary in the world. It's 30 times longer than Pepys' diary and it fills 91 cardboard boxes. Using six typewriters he noted down everything he did, describing everything from his dreams to his urination. He died in 2007 and won't allow most of it to be read until 2057, but a few pages are available. Then there's Gordon Bell who works for Microsoft and is chronicling every 20 seconds of his life with a photograph and employs people to scan every page he reads from books, so that there's a complete digital record of his life.

Twenty years after detonating a bacteriological weapon over Samur, rendering it uninhabitable, the Sontarans are back: a select platoon of seven has landed here on a secret mission, carrying sealed orders given to them by Fleet Marshal Stabb.

Series 2
Sugar
Comedian Simon Evans' new series about the economics of some of the goods - or bads - to which we're addicted.
If you crave your daily coffee, can't get by without a cigarette, feel that mid-afternoon slump without your sugar-fix, or can't face an evening without a glass of wine, you are definitely not alone. But have you ever thought about the economics that has made your addiction possible? Who does it profit? And would you want to make some canny investments that take advantage of our human weaknesses?
In this series, Simon Evans looks at the economics, history and health issues behind these oh-so-addictive commodities.
This week it's sugar. Some people say sugar could be the new tobacco - exposed as a health risk that's been knowingly concealed for decades. And the trouble is sugar is in almost everything now - even things that 'look' savoury. What part does economics have to play in how we have got to this point? How do we make sense of what the food industry is doing with sugar? And if we want to invest in this addiction, how do we do it?
With the help of economics guru, More Or Less host Tim Harford and the Queen of investment know-how, Merryn Somerset Webb, plus author David Gillespie, Simon walks us around the economics of this very familiar commodity and pokes fun at our relationship with it.
Presented by Simon Evans, with regular guests Tim Harford and Merryn Somerset Webb.
Written by Simon Evans, Benjamin Partridge and Andy Wolton.

The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. The Bards of Somalia
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's radio poetry archive with 'The Bards of Somalia' featuring the country's news-reporting poets.
What could Britain learn from Somalia - a country where poetry is nothing less than the main means of cultural communication?
Portrayed abroad as a land beset by gunmen, pirates and famine, it is also known by those who live there as a Nation of Poets. Somalia had no written language until 1972 and poetry has always been the country's core form of mass communication - whether the spoken word or, more recently, via cassettes and radios.
Verse has, in many areas, taken the place of history books, newspapers and television as the main means of spreading news and comment. Poets who have real skill - the true bards - have the power to shape current events and receive both social and political privileges.
Can we integrate any of these elements into British poetry? Instead of one Laureate, should we have hundreds of bards reflecting the diversity of our nation - people we can turn to for everything from the poetic equivalent of a Times leader to the latest gossip around the parish pump? Can poetry be integrated into our daily lives as successfully as in Somalia?
In discussion with presenter Rageh Omaar, poets from the Somali community in Britain and expert translators wonder if - through the medium of everything from the spoken word to text messaging - Somalia's bards might provide the germ of a new form of information sharing in Britain.

MON 06:30 Dick Barton: A Very Special Agent (b00t0fnk)
Alexander Armstrong examines the impact and popularity of special agent Dick Barton whose adventures ran on the BBC Light Programme from 1946 to 1951- and are still enjoyed today on BBC Radio 4 Extra.
Dick Barton starred in the BBC's first ever daily radio serial, and went on to appear in over 700 episodes. Millions gathered around the wireless feeling a rush of excitement when they heard the serial's memorable signature tune 'Devil's Galop', listening entranced to the exploits of the ex-commando Captain and his faithful lieutenants Jock and Snowy.
Alexander looks back to Barton's arrival and discovers that despite the serial's enormous popularity the programme attracted many critics, including one listener who described it as "blatant sadism corrupting the minds of our youth using the exact method used by the Nazis".
And discover how in an attempt to respond to the controversy, the script-writers adhered to 13 codes of conduct, such as: no sex, no booze, no bad language and all violence must be limited to "clean socks on the jaw."
Contributors include Gareth Johnson, son of the first actor to play Barton, award winning playwright Phil Wilmott and Barton fan John Mundy.
Archive interviews include Producer Neil Tuson and various cast members including Thora Hird who played various female roles in the first few series
The programme also reveals Barton's various reincarnations on film, television and most recently a stage musical.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2010.

TUE 06:30 The House That Jazz Built (b00p315y)
Celebrating 50 years of Ronnie Scott's, Paul Merton looks back at the origins of Ronnie Scott's, Britain's most famous jazz venue, and examines its impact in the world of music.
Ever since his trips in the late-1940s to the jazz clubs of New York's 52nd Street, Ronnie Scott dreamt of opening his own London venue. His vision came true when the first Ronnie Scott's club opened on Gerrard Street, Soho, in 1959.
The initial plan was purely to provide a base for British jazz musicians to jam. However, the club quickly developed a reputation for featuring the best in modern jazz and soon provided a platform for the world's greatest jazz musicians. It became a Mecca for jazz music fans and a popular hang-out for politicians, comedians and actors.
In 1965 it relocated a short distance to Frith Street, where it remains one of the world's most celebrated jazz rooms, complete with its own studio and record label.
Recorded on location at Ronnie Scott's, the programme features interviews with leading jazz artists Salena Jones, Ian Shaw, Jay Phelps and James Pearson, and features music and archive from personalities associated with the venue during its 50-year history.

Mention Milton Jones to most people and the first thing they think is 'Help!'.
King of the one-liners, Milton Jones returns BBC to Radio 4 for an amazing 10th series in a new format where he has decided to set himself up as a man who can help anyone anywhere - whether they need it or not. Because, in his own words, "No problem too problemy".
But each week, Milton and his trusty assistant Anton set out to help people and soon find they're embroiled in a new adventure. So when you're close to the edge, then Milton can give you a push.
This week, the local seafarers' pub starts serving only coffee, there's no denying it's rum....the coffee, that is. So who better than Milton to sort it out?
Written by Milton with James Cary ("Bluestone 42", "Miranda") and Dan Evans (who co-wrote Milton's Channel 4 show "House Of Rooms") the man they call "Britain's funniest Milton," returns to the radio with a fully-working cast and a shipload of new jokes.
The cast includes regulars Tom Goodman-Hill ("Spamalot", "Mr. Selfridge") as the ever-faithful Anton, and Dan Tetsell ("Newsjack"), and features the one and only Josie Lawrence working with Milton for the first time.

Heston Blumenthal - Historic Heston
Episode 2
Heston Blumenthal's name is synonymous with cutting edge cuisine but his inspiration comes from the history of British cooking. In 'Historic Heston' he chooses twenty eight dishes which span from medieval times to the late 19th Century. He takes them apart, then puts them together again with his own inimitable twist, so creating a sublime 21st Century take on ancient delicacies.
Today, Heston describes his version of the 1430 recipe for Pome Dores, a meat parfait disguised as fruit first served at the feast to celebrate the coronation of Henry IV. And he discusses how his own theatrical cuisine is only following in the footsteps of a British culinary tradition that stretches back to medieval times.

TUE 16:00 Dilemma (b01r0h4y)
Series 2
Episode 3
In Dilemma, Sue Perkins puts four panellists through the moral and ethical wringer by posing a series of finely-balanced dilemmas and then cross-examining them on their answers. So, in the first series, Dominic Lawson was asked if he would provide an alibi for someone he hated; Fi Glover was offered £25,000 to give a talk to a company that once screwed over her husband; John Finnemore was asked if he'd grass up a sweet old lady who was shoplifting. (Yes, Yes, No, were the answers if you're interested.)
As well as these hypothetical questions, the show also features a variety of rounds which may include: Audience Dilemmas, where the panel 'solve' any problems the audience may be having; What Did I Do?, where each panellist relates a dilemma they were faced with in their own lives and the others have to guess how they resolved it; Why I Was Right, where each panellist is given an indefensible action that they must morally justify in 30 seconds; Choose Your Own Adventure, where the panellists get a series of dilemmas, each one following on from the last as they burrow their way deeper into a moral quagmire; and Quickfire, where shades of grey are dismissed in favour of a fingers-on-the-buzzers binary choice - "Would you rather eat a kitten or fight a swan?".
This week's show sees comedian Dave Gorman cheating higher, faster and stronger; journalist Anita Anand deal with an unexpected guest; creator of Bleak Expectations Mark Evans getting a hand in the bush (but no birds); and comedian Jenny Eclair embrace dating in the digital age.
The show was devised by the award-winning comedian Danielle Ward, and is presented by Sue Perkins.
Producer: Ed Morrish.

TUE 22:30 Bunk Bed (b0418p89)
Series 1
Episode 4
Everyone craves a place where their mind and body are not applied to a particular task. The nearest faraway place. Somewhere for drifting and lighting upon strange thoughts which don't have to be shooed into context, but which can be followed like balloons escaping onto the air. Late at night, in the dark and in a bunk bed, your tired mind can wander.
This is the nearest faraway place for Patrick Marber and Peter Curran. Here they endeavour to get the heart of things in an entertainingly vague and indirect way. This is not the place for typical male banter.
From under the bed clothes they play each other music from The Residents and Gerry Rafferty, archive of JG Ballard and Virginia Woolf. Life, death, work and family are their slightly warped conversational currency.
Writers/Performers:
PETER CURRAN is a publisher, writer and documentary maker. A former carpenter, his work ranges from directing films about culture in Africa, America and Brazil to writing and presenting numerous Arts and culture programmes for both radio and television.
PATRICK MARBER co-wrote and performed in On The Hour and Knowing Me, Knowing You..with Alan Partridge. His plays include Dealer's Choice, After Miss Julie, Closer and Don Juan in Soho. Marber also wrote the Oscar-nominated screenplay for the film Notes on a Scandal.
Producer: Peter Curran.

Heston Blumenthal - Historic Heston
Episode 3
Heston Blumenthal's name is synonymous with cutting edge cuisine but his inspiration comes from the history of British cooking. In 'Historic Heston' he chooses twenty eight dishes which span from medieval times to the late 19th Century. He takes them apart, then puts them together again with his own inimitable twist, so creating a sublime 21st Century take on ancient delicacies.
Today, Heston admits that he found the 1660 recipe for Quaking Pudding irresistible. "It is all about the quake." But it is extraordinarily difficult to perfect. Even so, for a chef who has such a passion for the history of British cuisine, our prowess with puddings just can't be ignored.

Philip K Dick
Actor Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon; The Queen; Midnight in Paris) explores the life of Philip K. Dick with Matthew Parris, and explains why he had such a big influence on his recent production of Hamlet.
Michael first discovered Philip K. Dick through the film Bladerunner, and moved onto his short stories which got him thinking about science-fiction in a new way. Whilst reading about philosophy, quantum physics, and comparative mythology, it struck him how Dick was intuitively weaving narratives around all the most interesting elements that these fields were throwing up.
He talks about Philip K. Dick's innate interest in multiples realities, and how they overlap with Sheen's own family experiences of mental health issues. In fact the more he found out about him, the more he was drawn to this enigmatic writer.

In this final part, we start by taking listeners direct from the Matchbox studio to a report from outside the National Theatre, where some long speeches are going on inside. Our reporter (Martin Jarvis) tells anchor Rosalind Ayres that it seems to be all about Hamlet. A couple (Lisa Dillon and Lloyd Owen), who have just been on a street demo, can't quite cast off their hectoring demeanour when ordering tea and buns. And Tom Hollander at a dinner party embarrasses a fellow guest with some surprisingly anti-social behaviour. A husband (Adam Godley) may have a communication problem. In a bravura solo performance, Julia McKenzie attempts (on the phone) to communicate with the 'sofa disposal' department, but are they actually listening? And language becomes a problem for Ian Ogilvy as a hospital visitor - but who is really speaking gibberish?

James Bond - Solo
Episode 5
It is 1969 and James Bond is about to go solo, recklessly motivated by revenge.
A seasoned veteran of the service, 007 is sent to single-handedly stop a civil war in a small West African nation. Aided by a beautiful accomplice and hindered by the local militia, he undergoes a scarring experience which compels him to ignore M's orders in pursuit of his own brand of justice.
Bond's renegade action leads him to Washington DC, where he discovers a web of geopolitical intrigue and witnesses fresh horrors.
Even if Bond succeeds in exacting his revenge, a man with two faces will come to stalk his every waking moment.

Heston Blumenthal - Historic Heston
Episode 5
Heston Blumenthal's name is synonymous with cutting edge cuisine but his inspiration comes from the history of British cooking. In 'Historic Heston' he chooses twenty eight dishes which span from medieval times to the late 19th Century. He takes them apart, then puts them together again with his own inimitable twist, so creating a sublime 21st Century take on ancient delicacies.
Today, as an avowed fan of Alice in Wonderland, Heston unveils the inspiration for one of his signature dishes, Mock Turtle Soup. The original recipe for the soup appeared in a cookbook written by the first Professor of Botany at Cambridge University in 1732, but the dish quickly made it into the mainstream and the craze for it lasted well into the Victorian age.
