Series 18, Something Inside So StrongLabi Siffre wrote Something Inside So Strong in 1984. Widely believed to have been inspired by seeing film footage from South Africa, of young blacks being shot at by white policeman, he now reveals that the lyrics were also informed by the oppression he had experienced as a homosexual.
The song has been taken up by individuals and groups around the world who have suffered from discrimination. The Choir With No Name in Birmingham, made up of homeless singers, always close their concerts with the song. Choir members explain why it's so important to them, giving them a sense of pride and dignity.
The American singer Suede, talks about the power she finds in the song and the South African singer, Lira talks about making a special recording of it for the birthday of Nelson Mandela, as it was one of his favourite pieces. We hear how Celtic football fans sing it as an act of solidarity with their beleaguered manager, Neil Lennon.
In his first interview for over a decade Siffre explains how he still sings the songs as he tries to put his life back together after the death of his partner, Peter.
Producer: Lucy Lunt.
SAT 01:00 The Lives of Harry Lime (b08yrlck)
Series 3, Murder on the RivieraCan con man Harry keep his post-war scam in France on track after he meets a woman with a dead man?
Starring Orson Welles as Harry Lime.
The films of Orson Welles, such as 'Citizen Kane', 'The Magnificent Ambersons' and 'Touch of Evil' guaranteed his place in the pantheon of silver-screen heroes.
In the celebrated 1949 film adaptation of Graham Greene's novel 'The Third Man', Harry Lime is introduce as one of cinema's most notorious anti-heroes. Sought in post-war Vienna by pulp writer Holly Martins [Joseph Cotton] and British Army Major Calloway [Trevor Howard], Lime manages to steal the show despite being absent for much of it!
This 1951-52 radio prequel to the film, 'The Lives of Harry Lime' earned Welles even more acclaim. His distinctive tones had already served him well as the radio voice of 'The Shadow' between 1937 and 1938, where he portrayed the crusader with distinctly questionable means of thwarting crime.
Stripped of the film cameras, the character of Harry Lime is not ameliorated for this radio outing. He's an out and out rogue. Lime made it to the airwaves thanks to another Harry - Harry Alan Towers, with whom Welles collaborated on 'The Black Museum'. Like its eponymous anti-hero, this series travelled widely, being syndicated across the USA and on Radio Luxembourg.
The music is by Anton Karas, the zither man.
Produced by Towers of London.

The Great ProvidersProf Kathy Willis concludes her major new history series by asking how much plant biodiversity is worth, and examines new research into securing the future of our staple crops.
Understanding the distribution, diversity and potential of plants for food, lay at the heart of the 18th century botanical impresario Joseph Banks' vision to "improve Britain's estates of the world". To secure future resilience of crops in today's world there's a growing need to conserve the closest wild relatives of our staple crops.
Kathy Willis discovers, given climatic threats to some of our most substantial crops such as coffee - for which the industry currently depends on a single species, the economic value of wild relatives of today's domestic crops is considerable.
And as we hear, some important future crops are still to be found from previously overlooked plants.
With contributions from Richard Thompson, Business valuations partner at Price-Waterhouse Cooper; historian Jim Endersby; head of coffee research at Kew, Aaron Davis; Kew's head of yams Paul Wilkin.

SAT 05:30 It's Funny and It's True (b08yn1xk)
Series 1, 23/07/2017Comedy is at its most powerful when it takes on our darkest fears and hardest times, and transforms them into laughter. Julia Sutherland looks into the corners of fellow stand up comedians' lives - performers who have chosen to share their deeply personal stories on stage to give a voice to issues otherwise overlooked. They have overcome their troubles and empowered themselves and many others to laugh at the things you're not supposed to laugh at.
Through comedy, Julia shows that sometimes it's OK not to be OK.
In this first episode, Julia meets Janey Godley. Brought up in near-Dickensian squalor in the tough East End of Glasgow, Janey has faced sexual abuse, murder within the family, violence, sectarianism and more. She has coped with everything her life has thrown at her by turning each challenge and tragedy into hilarious stand-up comedy. Her own empowerment has given a voice to thousands of others by shattering taboos and breaking emotional shackles.
Julia also meets Heather Ross, who has toured the world with her show Rape is Real and Everywhere. Through her stand up she has touched the lives of thousands of people who have had similar experiences, and has found relief in sharing her candid account and extremely dark humour. This is a very personal story told from a unique point of view.
A Dabster production for BBC Radio 4.

SAT 07:30 Gay Britannia (b08z8nxh)

The Bona History of Julian and Sandy:
Maureen Lipman's vada at the legendary omi-polones from 'Round the Horne', as portrayed by Kenneth Williams and Hugh Paddick.
Featuring Hugh Paddick, Kenneth Williams, Betty Marsden, Barry Took and Kenneth Horne.
Just the catchphrase of the legendary camp double-act "Hello, I'm Julian and this is my friend Sandy" was enough to spark audience laughter. Thanks to the sharply written scripts of Barry Took and Marty Feldman, Paddick and Williams helped introduce the camp gay language of polari to BBC listeners over four series between 1965 - 1968.
Each week, straight man Kenneth Horne found himself trolling into a variety of bona scenarios, being mercilessly sent up by the innuendo-loving duo.
Lipman explains more of the mysteries of speaking polari, along with classic Round the Horne clips from Bona Law, Rentachap, Bona Tours, Ballet Bona and Bona Productions.
Written and produced by Turan Ali.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1998

A Life Less Ordinary, Sandra GregoryIn the first part of a new series of 'A Life Less Ordinary', Sandra Gregory goes back over the coverage of the dramatic events that saw her placed firmly under the media spotlight. In 1993, she attempted to smuggle heroin out of Thailand in a bid to earn enough money to get home to the UK, was arrested and initially faced the prospect of the death penalty. Instead she spent over seven years in prison - first in Bangkok, then in Britain. Gregory talks candidly about the shame she felt upon seeing the TV cameras through the prison bars for the first time, knowing that the pictures would be relayed back home for her family and friends to see. We hear from journalists who visited her during her years in the so-called Bangkok Hilton prison, and she meets one of those columnists who had condemned her actions and shown little sympathy for her situation, given the severity of the crime she'd committed. Gregory also describes how she contemplated suicide while inside, and the mixed feelings she experienced when her parents finally ended their media silence to begin campaigning on her behalf.
At the point when Bosnia and Maastricht were dominating the headlines, the story of one individual's crime and punishment broke through and captured the nation's attention. Now the one person unable at the time to follow the coverage of the story because she was in prison, gets the opportunity to revisit her own story and describe what happens when an ordinary life becomes the subject of massive public and media scrutiny.

The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. Series 2, Desperate for a Thumbs-UpAt last, Ginny Fox has finished her rewrite of Borlando and rushes it off to her friend and confidante, Vera Sackcloth-Vest, for appraisal. Meanwhile, DH Lollipop has just completed a rewrite of Lady Hattersley's Plover and is nervously awaiting the critical verdict of Lionel Fox.
Never have two literary giants been so eager to have their geniuses confirmed, but self-doubt plagues their every waking hour.
Due to a series of unfortunate coincidences, involving Lionel's inability to remember addresses and Vera's obsession with creating a new Blue Garden at Sizzlinghust, which involves her sending off for hundreds of new plants by mail order and storing them in Gosling's shed, the manuscripts go missing.
What the writers interpret as a literary thumbs-down from their readers is nothing more than misdirected-mail. Friendships are strained to breaking point, while Ginny and Vera try to guess what the other is thinking and Mrs Gosling burns DH Lollipop's filthy manuscript when she accidentally comes across it and reads it from cover to cover.

The Real Henry James, Europe v AmericaHenry James was not only a great novelist - he also wrote a great deal of entertaining non-fiction, producing reviews and essays on a wide variety of subjects. To mark the centenary of his death, these five anthologies reveal James through his letters, memoirs, essays and private notebooks.
Episode 1: Europe versus America.
Was James English or American? The British tend to regard him as American, the Americans as British. Although born in America, James's wealthy, eccentric father moved the family around constantly - to France, England, Switzerland, Boston - so the young James never felt settled in America. In fact, Henry James lived more of his life in his adopted country of England than in his native America. At the end of his life, he took British nationality in 1915 as a gesture of solidarity and as a protest against American neutrality in the First World War. But in some ways he always remained an outsider, and felt an outsider in both cultures.
James' writing gives us an insight into both societies. After he'd settled in London he composed a negative catalogue about his homeland - the tone hovers somewhere between real critique and self-mockery of the Englishman's snobbery about Americans.
The anthology has been selected by Professor Philip Horne of University College London, who is founding General Editor of a major scholarly edition of James's fiction and has re-transcribed the notebooks for an authoritative new edition.

The Real Henry James, Dining Out in English SocietyHenry James was not only a great novelist - he also wrote a great deal of entertaining non-fiction, producing reviews and essays on a wide variety of subjects. To mark the centenary of his death, these five anthologies reveal James through his letters, memoirs, essays and private notebooks.
Episode 2: Dining Out in English Society
Entertaining glimpses of English society through the sharp eyes of an American observer. James was an inveterate diner-out, and once managed 107 dinners in a season. He left sharp observations of the people he met at dinner, including the great writers of the day:
"The chattering and self-complacent Robert Browning, who I am sorry to say, does not make on me a purely agreeable impression. His transparent eagerness to hold the monopoly of the conversation and a sort of shrill interruptingness which distinguishes him have in them a kind of vulgarity."
For James, dining-out wasn't just a chance to meet celebrities - it gave him stories which became the plots in his novels. At one dinner, for instance, he heard the story of a family lawsuit which became The Spoils of Poynton. We hear the excited letter outlining the plot and characters for the novel which have struck him at the dinner table.
The anthology has been selected by Professor Philip Horne of University College London, who is founding General Editor of a major scholarly edition of James's fiction and has re-transcribed the notebooks for an authoritative new edition.

The Real Henry James, Modern WomenHenry James was not only a great novelist - he also wrote a great deal of entertaining non-fiction, producing reviews and essays on a wide variety of subjects. To mark the centenary of his death, these five anthologies reveal James through his letters, memoirs, essays and private notebooks.
Episode 3: Modern Women
Henry James was a lifelong bachelor, but many of his closest friendships were with women. And his novels are known for his sensitive and sympathetic treatment of women's experience - very often as his central characters.
His preoccupation with the situation of women, and with contemporary debates about women's role in society, emerges early in his career. In 1868, the 25-year-old James reviewed a book called Modern Women and What Is Said of Them - a British collection of anti-feminist articles. The book roused James to an angry attack on the marriage market which women found themselves in, and a defence of the position of women in a patriarchal society. We hear extracts from that impassioned review.
We hear too the moving letter which James wrote home to his mother after the death of his closest female friend, his cousin Minnie Temple. Minnie inspired Isabel Archer, his heroine in The Portrait of a Lady, and his heroine Millie Theale in The Wings of the Dove would resemble her even more closely.
The anthology has been selected by Professor Philip Horne of University College London, who is founding General Editor of a major scholarly edition of James's fiction and has re-transcribed the notebooks for an authoritative new edition.

Truth and lies in everyday life, and how honest are we with those we love, including ourselves.

Rhiannon Tise - Outside InBy Rhiannon Tise
Nicola is bubbly and attractive on the outside but behind
the door to her flat lies a secret. Inside is full of boxes and
boxes of shopping, packed with clothes she has never worn.
She is running out of room but she just can't stop and her
money is running out.
Music by Marc Johnson
Directed by Tracey Neale
On the surface Nicola is a bubbly, enthusiastic outgoing woman who doesn't appear to let life get her down - this is certainly how her friend and neighbour Robin sees her. On the inside however, in her flat, a place where Robin has never been invited, Nicola is a troubled soul. She is lonely and feels worthless and frightened by the world around her. The only thing that picks her up, that gives her the euphoric high she needs to keep going, is shopping.
Nicola's shopping addiction has taken over her flat. Wardrobes, drawers, bags, boxes and suitcases full to bursting. Boxes are stacked up like hedges around the living room, her bedroom and the kitchen, creating a maze of walkways and corridors to get lost in. Nicola never lets anyone in, so no one has any idea of the secret she is carrying around with her. She can't keep her secret forever but what happens when the outside finally finds its way in?
The Writer
Rhiannon won the Richard Imison Award for her play 'The Waltzer' and has written several other plays for radio including Pier, My Life In Boxes and Time Breathes for Radio 4 and Iona, A Wire, for Radio 3. She has also written for the Theatre and her work has been performed at The Royal Court, The Royal National Theatre, The Tron in Glasgow, The Traverse, Southwark Playhouse and The Arcola. The Real Henry James, Encounters with Famous PeopleHenry James was not only a great novelist - he also wrote a great deal of entertaining non-fiction, producing reviews and essays on a wide variety of subjects. To mark the centenary of his death, these five anthologies reveal James through his letters, memoirs, essays and private notebooks.
Episode 4: Encounters with Famous People
Henry James ended his career in London in the early twentieth century as a figure of great dignity, known to his admirers as 'the Master'. But as a shy child, and a bashful young man, early in his career he had met some of the literary giants of the Victorian age. James's father Henry James Senior was a well-known and well-connected intellectual figure - though very eccentric - so all sorts of eminent people passed through the house. Towards the end of his life, James still remembers being overwhelmed by embarrassment and self-consciousness during an encounter with the most famous novelist of the day - the author of Vanity Fair.
"Still present to me is the voice proceeding from my father's library, in which some glimpse of me hovering, at an opening of the door, prompted him to the formidable words, 'Come here, little boy, and show me your extraordinary jacket!'"
We hear what happened next in that meeting with Thackeray - and of meetings with Dickens, Tennyson, and George Eliot.
The anthology has been selected by Professor Philip Horne of University College London, who is founding General Editor of a major scholarly edition of James's fiction and has re-transcribed the notebooks for an authoritative new edition.

Series 1, 30/07/2017Comedy is at its most powerful when it takes on our darkest fears and hardest times, and transforms them into laughter.
This second programme in the series features Felicity Ward and Fern Brady. Felicity Ward is an Australian comedian who has struggled with severe anxiety throughout her adult life - particularly challenging when it's your job to entertain strangers every night from stage. Glaswegian stand up Fern Brady has been forced to cope with depression, which is made far more difficult by her underlying anger issues that are provoked by the challenges of daily life.

To mark the centenary of his death, these five anthologies reveal James through his letters, memoirs, essays and private notebooks.
Episode 5: Childhood and Family
It may seem paradoxical to end a series on Henry James by going back to his childhood - but that's what James himself did in old age. As he approached 70, James began to look back over his life and career - by then he was the only one of five siblings to survive - and found that his early memories and associations multiplied with an almost uncontrollable vividness.
We hear memories of how he roamed free as a young boy on the streets of New York, and of his father, an eccentric religious philosopher who detested 'prigs'.
We hear too a moving and intimate account of a visit James paid towards the end of his life to the family grave-plot near Harvard - where his parents, his sister Alice, and Wilky, one of his brothers, were buried. James wrote about this only in his private notebooks, which speaks revealingly about the importance of family for him. The programme ends with a passage about the quest for religious faith, and with James's great motto in life, "e kind, be kind, be kind..."
The anthology has been selected by Professor Philip Horne of University College London, who is founding General Editor of a major scholarly edition of James's fiction and has re-transcribed the notebooks for an authoritative new edition.
