SAT 00:30 Soul Music (b01r0g4h)
Series 15, ShipbuildingThe song from 1982 was written by Elvis Costello and Clive Langer for Robert Wyatt and has been recorded in several versions by Elvis Costello himself, Suede, June Tabor, Hue and Cry, Tamsin Archer and The Unthanks.
The blend of subtle lyrics and extraordinary music makes this a political song like no other. It transcends the particular circumstances of its writing: the Falklands War and the decline of British heavy industry, especially ship-building.
Clive Langer and Elvis Costello describe how the song came to be written and how the legendary jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player, Chet Baker, came to perform on Costello's version.
Richard Ashcroft is a philosopher who wants the song, which he describes as a kind of secular hymn, played at his funeral because it gives a perfect expression of how he believes we should think about life. Not being able to feel the emotion of the song would, he feels, be like being morally tone-deaf. If you don't like this song, he'd find it hard to be your friend.
The song's achingly beautiful final couplet about "diving for pearls" makes the MP Alan Johnson cry and has also inspired an oral history and migrant integration project in Glasgow. Chris Gourley describes how the participants found a way to overcome their lack of English and communicate through a shared understanding of ship-building practice.
Other contributors include Hopi Sen, a political blogger who was an unusually political child, and the Mercury Prize winning folk group The Unthanks. They toured their version to towns with ship-building connections as part of a live performance of a film tracing the history of British ship-building using archive footage.
Producer: Natalie Steed.

SAT 01:30 There is Business Like Show Business (b01dhn6r)
Some of the most lavish and expensive musicals ever staged were in praise of photocopiers, kitchen appliances, insurance salesmen and even tractors...They were made in the 50s, 60s and later by companies to motivate their staff. The people who wrote them were huge Broadway names including Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock the men who gave us Fiddler on the Roof. They were private performances staged at sales conventions and the music was never made available to the public. They were a hidden part of the business world and the only reason we now know about them is that some shows were recorded as souvenirs for the employees - and these have been discovered by a couple of enthusiastic record collectors, Steve Young and Jonathan Ward. They tell Will Young about their favourite shows - Detroit Diesel's "Diesel Dazzle" and "A Musical Introduction to 1958 - The Shape of Tomorrow" from Westinghouse Appliances.
There were also industrial shows in the UK. We speak to choreographer and director Gillian Lynne who produced the Lyon's Maid musical "With Lyon's Maid, You're Laughing!" in 1973. And Herb Kanzell who, following his triumph with The Westinghouse Appliances show of 1958 wrote musical shows for British Rail, Oxo and British Airways.
Music played in the programme:
Somewhere over the Rainbow - Judy Garland from "The Wizard of Oz" soundtrack
"Tractor Drivin' Man" by Hank Beebe and performed by Bill Shirley - who also sang "On the Street Where You Live" on the "My Fair Lady" soundtrack and provided the voice for Prince Phillip in Disney's "Sleeping Beauty". Tractor Drivin' Man was used in several Ford Tractor Shows in the 1960s.
"My Insurance Man" from the Continental Assurance Company 1968 show. Written by Arnold Midlash and Robert WeDyck. Performed by Beverly Lacek.
"Golden Harvest" from the Ford Tractor Show 1959 "Ford-i-f-y Your Future" written by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock.
"Big and Beautiful" from the 1966 American Motors show "Music from AM Route 66" written by Hank Beebe and Bill Heyer, performed by Chuck Green.
"Tomorrow, Today" from "the shape of tomorrow, a musical introduction to 1958" from Westinghouse Appliances, written by Herb Kanzell and John Wyman, performed by Marilyn Ross.
"Nightmare", also from "the shape of tomorrow", written by Herb Kanzell and John Wyman performed by Martin Green.
"Oh What a Beautiful Morning" from Oklahoma! written by Rodgers and Hammerstein.
"Monroe Man" from the Monroe Calculator Show 1969, music written by Sonny Kippe, lyrics by Joe Lapidos & Glenn Moore, performed by Diane Findlay.
"Tele op blues" from the Lyon's Maid 1973 show, "With Lyon's Maid You're Laughing" written by Denis Norden and Malcolm Mitchell and performed by Julia Sutton.
"The Latest" from Cole National Annual Sales Meeting Show "A Fairy Tale" 1965, performed by Liz Seneff
"I Never Enjoyed my Operation More" from the Converters Inc show "The Spirit of '78". No composition credits. Cast: Carol Steffen, Renee Kalen, Alice Dodd, Lee Pelty, and Mike Arquette
"We Were There" from the Detroit Diesel 1966 show "Diesel Dazzle" written by Hank Beebe and Bill Heyer.
"The Answer" from General Electric's Silicon Division's 1973 show "Got to Investigate Silicones" written by Hank Beebe and Bill Heyer, performed by Ron Young, Paul Eichel, & Joy Garrett. Special cameo vocal appearance by lyricist Bill Heyer.

The Lie of the LandSelf-confessed map addict Mike Parker explores modern cartography.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and then there are maps. Borders can be moved and countries expanded, shrunk or even left off the map altogether. Mike Parker discovers how maps can be used as tools of power, politics and propaganda.

It turned out to be a gripping true story of brutality, greed and ruthlessness in a rural community gone wildly astray.
In today's final episode, nearly a quarter of a century has passed, and the case has still not been solved. But a gruesome discovery leads to a new inquest, and Oddingley village finally learns the truth.

The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, sport, and quite possibly Justin Bieber. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.

SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 (b01n0spx)
Dear Adolf - Letters to the FuhrerChristopher Cook examines a unique set of recordings from the vaults of the American Jewish Committee that strove to define America's war aims and values.
For 6 weeks, in 1942, the airwaves of NBC hummed with the voices of Hollywood stars such as James Cagney, Raymond Massey and Helen Hayes addressing the Fuhrer in the guise of ordinary citizens. Ever since the trauma of Pearl Harbor, thousands of letters had poured into radio networks and newspaper offices expressing support, anger and defiance at the new war America was now fighting. These letters earned themselves the sobriquet of 'Dear Adolf's' and Pulitzer prize winning writer Stephen Vincent Benet drew on their inspiration for six fictional missives to Hitler.
But the backstory of these and other broadcasts from the AJC is as compelling as the star names chosen to speak for the people of America. Formed in 1906, the American Jewish Committee was a response to the plight of Eastern European Jewry then suffering a wave of pogroms. Avowedly 'unpolitical', in so far as it eschewed the major movements then gripping the Jewish world (Socialism, Zionism and Communism) it sought to defend Jewish life both in the U.S. and the heartlands of Eastern Europe and to engage in inter faith dialogue at home. At its heart was advocacy of a loyal American Jewish citizenry and a desire to overcome prejudice.
By the late 1930's the A.J.C. took to the airwaves to use the power of radio. Producing thousands of radio messages and programs aimed at fighting bigotry on the homefront and promoting democratic values for a diverse number of programmes. This was a time of rising anti-semitism, domestically & abroad with the German American Bund holding mass rallies in Madison Square Gardens and the siren voice of radio demagogue Father Coughlin railing against 'internal enemies'.
Series like Dear Adolf and a gripping dramatization of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, made just months after its destruction, are just a few of the archival gems of the A.J.C. spanning two decades of attempts to counter prejudice and imbue ordinary American's with the spirit of tolerance.
Producer: Mark Burman.

Davis shoots down the "misconception" that she creates frictions on her movie sets. Her arguments were always with the front office. The actress also strongly counters Duvall Smith's claim that she uses the same mannerisms in every performance - blaming instead her imitators.
Films discussed include 'Dark Victory' (1939), 'Juarez' (1939), 'Watch on the Rhine' (1943) and Davis's most recent hit at the time, 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?' with Joan Crawford (1962).

From her early youth to her death in 1981, Molly Holden was an acute, unsentimental but lyrical poet of the natural world. She was influenced by Hardy and Edward Thomas but her poetry was distinctively her own. Her inspiration was topography, archaeology and the ties of the present world with the past.
Molly delighted in the outdoors and it was a huge blow when Multiple Sclerosis first slowed her down, then put her in a wheelchair. She continued to write about the world she could see from her window but increasingly the cruel reality of her situation became evident in her poetry.

SUN 23:15 Before They Were Famous (b01mdgwz)
Series 1, Episode 4Ian Leslie presents a new Radio 4 comedy show which brings to light the often surprising first literary attempts of some of the world's best known writers. A project of literary archaeology, Leslie has found evidence in the most unlikely of places - within the archives of newspapers, periodicals, corporations and universities-showcasing the early writing examples of writers such as Jilly Cooper-during her brief and unfortunately unsuccessful foray into the world of war reporting, and Hunter S Thompson - in his sadly short-lived phase working in the customer relations department for a major American Airline.
These are the newspaper articles, advertising copy, company correspondence and gardening manuals, that allow us a fascinating glimpse into the embryonic development of our best loved literary voices - people whom we know today for their novels or poems but who, at the time, were just people with a dream...and a rent bill looming at the end of the month.

In an unusual collaboration, the author has revisited the book to create, with the abridger, this new ten-part serialisation.
Frances Shore is a cartographer by trade, but when her husband's work takes them to Saudi Arabia she finds herself unable to map either the ever changing landscape or the Kingdom's heavily veiled ways of working. The regime is corrupt and harsh, the expatriates are hard-drinking money-grubbers, and her Muslim neighbours are secretive and watchful.
She soon discovers that the streets are not a woman's territory. Confined in her flat, she finds her sense of self beginning to dissolve. She hears footsteps, sounds of distress from the supposedly empty flat above. She has only constantly changing rumours to hang on to, and no one with whom to share her creeping unease.

TUE 06:30 Bellydancing and the Blues (b01pg3qt)
Dancer and drummer Guy Schalom hunts out the spirit of the new Egypt in one of its biggest cultural exports. To our ears, Baladi is the music of the bellydancer - kitsch and mock-Arab. But in its true form it is the essence of Egypt, 'of the country', 'home' in the deepest sense.
Our journey begins in Berlin, as bejewelled dancers from across Europe gather on a theatre stage ready to do battle for the title 'Miss Bellydance 2012'. They might not all know it, but the music which accompanies their gyrations is a knot of contradictions: an essence of the east inspired by western musical traditions, the spirit of rural Egypt made urban.
But the deepest contradictions rest with the very people who perform Baladi. What seems to us a provocative, alluring, even licentious dance for women in fact has roots in a ceremonial dance for men. As we discover in Cairo, deep divisions remain between those who think it is a vital expression of the oriental spirit and those committed to regenerating sexual stereotypes. So what is the reality of bellydance and Baladi in the new Egypt? Can it find any place amongst the street rappers and pop artists or is this an artform about to be consigned to realms of the tourist-pleasing clubs and cafes? As with so much in this rapidly changing culture, answers prove difficult to find.

Eight Months on Ghazzah Street, Episode 3Nearly 30 years on from its original publication, Hilary Mantel's third novel is still as disturbing, incisive and illuminating as ever.

THU 06:30 Royal Racers and Fascinators (b011zkl5)
Every June thousands of men and women step out at Ascot railway station wearing clothes that would grace the Garden Parties of Buckingham Palace - gentlemen in top hats and grey morning suits, ladies in fine silks and satins, and often wearing fizzing little creations on their heads - the fascinator. This is Royal Ascot, and Hardeep Singh Kohli is there to talk to the racegoers and to mark the card of Ascot's 300 year old history.
The connection with Royalty and fashion has been there from the start. The hunting-mad Queen Anne in 1711 noticed that, just by the kennels where her hounds were kept, there was a clearing which would make an excellent racecourse. It was a stone's throw from her Royal residence at Windsor Castle, and the first races took place in August of that year. Immediately Ascot became a place where apart from wagers, people came to show themselves off and have a very good time.
The Royal connection was enhanced by the George IV, who could set off after a heavy night at Windsor to have a Royal flutter. It was he who initiated the Royal Procession down the course, which marks the arrival of the current Queen.
Hardeep talks to the historian of Ascot, Sean Magee, about the landmark moments - from the early days when cock-fighting and bare-knuckle boxing added to the entertainment, to the memorable races of champion jockeys and their steeds - Arkle, Yates, Nijinsky, and Desert Orchid have all graced the course, with the record-breaking moment when jockey Frankie Dettori rode the winner of all seven races in September 1996.
Hardeep hears about the highspots of his commentating career from Sir Peter O'Sullevan, talks to the TV presenter Clare Balding and meets the Chief Executive Charles Barnett and Clerk of the Course Chris Stickels.
Producer: Richard Bannerman

THU 07:00 Richard Barton: General Practitioner! (b00757wt)

Before they can reach the hotel, he's raced off in a taxi chase, convinced someone's taken his bag. They have. But as Dick's bag contains three drip-dry shirts and a week's supply of tea-bags, and theirs contains something quite different, one can assume it's an accident. Things are looking rather dangerous.
Starring Robert Bathurst as Richard Barton, Moray Watson as Old Dick Barton, Iain Cuthbertson as Jock, Julian Dutton as Young Dick Barton and Matilda Ziegler as Sally Barton
In 1946, Edward J Mason wrote the first episode of Dick Barton - Special Agent. The BBC Light Programme's hugely popular serial followed the adventures of the ex-Commando and his mates Jock Anderson and Snowy White. Despite facing a series of never-ending cliff-hangers at the hands of dastardly villains, our hero always triumphed. "With one bound Dick was free!".
Half a century later, Edward J's son Lol created Richard Barton, son of Dick, in an affectionate homage to one of BBC Radio's most enduring heroes.
Producer: Jo Clegg
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in April 1998.
THU 07:30 Paul Sinha's History Revision (b08tfyqj)

This series will once again see Paul shine a light on the important historical moments that you never got taught at school, and explain why so much of what you did learn is wrong. There will also, as ever, be puns.
In this first episode of the series, Paul looks at the sheer volume of history that has been created since series two, including Brexit, every celebrity in the world seeming to pass away, and the election of Donald Trump. He also looks at the contributions to American culture of immigrants, including iconic clothing, iconic entertainment, and iconic icons.

Eight Months on Ghazzah Street, Episode 4Nearly 30 years on from its original publication, Hilary Mantel's third novel is still as disturbing, incisive and illuminating as ever.

FRI 06:30 What's in a Name? (b01nq2zp)
Impiaz - yes. Oisin - yes. Musa - yes. Ayisat - yes. Araya - yes. Tianna - yes. Taking the register at the start of the school day at one London primary school says much about names in 21st century Britain.
As a child growing up in 1980s Britain, journalist Sangita Myska desperately wanted a name her white English friends could pronounce. She says getting someone to pronounce her name was like sending it through a verbal mincer: Sanjeeta, Fangita, Sageeta, Sangria. As she tries to book a table in a restaurant, we hear just what this feels like when you have a "foreign" sounding name.
Years of garbled pronunciations and awkward corrections later, she now believes those challenges have helped her forge her sense of identity.
Sangita talks to other people whose names have had a huge effect on their lives and work. Over honey cake with Rabbi Lionel Blue, he tells Sangita "I'd much rather be called Pete. I don't feel like being labelled. I'd like to be something like Pete Brown or Pete Smith or Pete Jones or something like that. It would mean I'd finally graduated into English life".
She meets poet Musa Okwonga, who describes how his surname led to his family being expelled from Uganda under Idi Amin's regime....and later influenced many of his career choices. He wanted to study English at university. But in the jobs market he thought he'd get nowhere with a name like his. So he did law at Oxford.
Shahid Iqbal and Richard Brown (one and the same person) explains why he has both names. One for his personal life - and one for business. "People would cancel contracts when they heard my name".
Producer: Adele Armstrong

You may not immediately know the title but in hearing just the first few notes you are most likely to know the music.
Erik Satie's Gymnopédies are a collection of short, atmospheric pieces of which Gymnopédie No.1 is perhaps the most popular. Music historian and author Mark Prendergast has studied Satie's work and reveals the complex character of the man who revolutionised the 19th century classical music of Europe. Melbourne based artist Colin Duncan reflects on the music's 'physical form which takes you into space and time' and for him inspired a body of work created in brail. Murder Mystery writer Cathy Ace remembers how this meditative music could shut out the noise of the city as she sped around London in her old brown mini, whilst Mathematician and author Ian Stewart explores the mathematics of this special piece and how music can touch our soul.
