Nina Perry's composed feature 'Spirit of the Beehive' explores our enduring relationship with the honeybee, lifting the lid of the beehive to hear some surprising lessons to be learnt through observing and working with bees, as well as how the life of bees inspires human endeavours in the arts and in business.
We follow a group of young people from Hackney in London who are passionate urban beekeepers. They work for The Golden Company, a social enterprise taking their beekeeping to new heights by installing bees on the roof of investment bank Nomura - where the bees are seen as a symbol of productivity and growth in the city.
Scientists at Sussex University explain how they are looking at ways to help the honeybee by eavesdropping in on their communication system, the waggle dance. We peek inside the bee-inspired Parisian Artist community La Ruche (the beehive) and are led through the bee sanctuary of the Natural Beekeeping Trust to discover the virtues of listening to bees.

SAT 02:00 Book at Bedtime (b01d5np9)
Capital, Episode 5
Spring has sprung in Pepys Road. The police investigation is going nowhere and Roger's deputy is hatching a plan to get him straight to the top.
Capital - the new novel by John Lanchester is the story of one south London street, which has seen a hundred years of fortunes made and lost, of hearts broken, of first steps and last breaths. And then, one day a card with a simple message drops through each letterbox: 'We Want What You Have'...
At forty, Roger Yount is blessed with an expensive life, a stalled marriage and a job in the City. His hoped-for Christmas bonus of a million pounds might seem lavish, but with second homes and nannies to maintain it's starting to look more like a necessity. At eighty-two, Petunia Howe just sits in her window, perplexed by how Pepys Road has changed in her lifetime, wondering why anyone wants what she's got. Elsewhere in Pepys Road, Zbigniew has come from Warsaw to indulge the affluent in their interior decoration whims and traffic warden Quentina has exchanged political activism in Zimbabwe for encounters with enraged motorists. At the end of the road, Ahmed Kamal runs the cornershop. For them all, this non-stop city offers the chance of a different kind of life.
Capital interweaves the lives and stories of the residents of Pepys Road in an utterly compelling, post-crash, state-of-the-nation novel told with compassion, humour and truth; epic in scope, yet intimate and contemplative.
Capital is read by Rafe Spall and begins in December 2007 with the residents of Pepys Road preparing for Christmas, but the cards they receive aren't what they expect.

SAT 02:15 The People's Post: A Narrative History of the Post Office (b018fmt7)
The Last Post
In 1969 the post office ceased being a government industry to become a nationalised industry. It avoided being sold off in the 1980s, only to face even bigger challenges in the 2000s: sustaining the costs of a huge labour force, and rivalry from digital communications. As it sits on the brink of privatisation, what does the Royal Mail mean today?
As Royal Mail faces an uncertain future, Dominic Sandbrook charts the development of the post office and examines its impact on literacy, free speech, commerce and communication. The Post Office has become a cherished social institution, linking people together and extending their vision outward into the wider world.

SAT 04:00 The 3rd Degree (b042zcqm)
Series 4, Birmingham
A quiz show hosted by Steve Punt where a team of three University students take on a team of three of their professors.
Coming this week from the University of Birmingham, "The 3rd Degree" is a funny, lively and dynamic quiz show aimed at cultivating the next generation of Radio 4 listeners whilst delighting the current ones.
The Specialist Subjects in this episode are History of Medicine, Social Policy and American Studies and the questions range from the Russo-Japanese war of 1805 and Tristan & Isolde to Candy Crush Corner and monkey glands...
The show is recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in a genuinely original and fresh take on an academic quiz. Being a Radio 4 programme, it of course meets the most stringent standards of academic rigour - but with lots of facts and jokes thrown in for good measure.
Together with host Steve Punt, the show tours the (sometimes posh, sometimes murky, but always welcoming!) Union buildings, cafés and lecture halls of six universities across the UK.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the 'Highbrow & Lowbrow' round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, film, and One Direction... In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds, in which students take on their Professors in their own subjects, were particularly lively, and offered plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides...
The resulting show is funny, fresh, and not a little bit surprising, with a truly varied range of scores, friendly rivalry, and moments where students wished they had more than just glanced at that reading list...
In this series, the universities are Bristol, Kent, Bedfordshire, Birmingham, Nottingham & Aberystwyth.
Overflow (incl Cast Lists)
The host, Steve Punt, although best known as a satirist on The Now Show is also someone who delights in all facets of knowledge, not just in the Humanities (his educational background) but in the sciences as well. As well as "The Now Show" he has made a number of documentaries for Radio 4, on subjects as varied as "The Poet Unwound - The History Of The Spleen" and "Getting The Gongs" - an investigation into awards ceremonies - as well as a half-hour comedy for Radio 4's 2008 Big Bang Day set in the Large Hadron Collider, called "The Genuine Particle". This makes him the perfect host for a show which aims to be an intellectual, fulfilling and informative quiz, but with wit and a genuine delight in exploring the subjects at hand.
The 3rd Degree is a Pozzitive production, produced by David Tyler. His radio credits include Armando Iannucci's Charm Offensive, Cabin Pressure, Bigipedia, The Brig Society, Thanks A Lot, Milton Jones!, Kevin Eldon Will See You Now, Jeremy Hardy Speaks To The Nation, Giles Wemmbley Hogg Goes Off, The 99p Challenge, My First Planet, The Castle and even, going back a bit, Radio Active. SAT 07:30 Lyrical Journey (b01qkxbn)
Series 2, Patience of Angels
Patience of Angels
Twenty years ago, on a busy road in an otherwise leafy district of Cambridge, songwriter Boo Hewerdine was looking out of his top floor flat and saw a woman on a bus travel by - and from these rather inauspicious beginnings the song Patience of Angels took shape. It later became a hit in 1994 for singer Eddi Reader who'd had previous chart success with the group Fairground Attraction.
In this episode of Lyrical Journey, Jonathan Maitland visits Cambridge to meet Boo and Eddi and, as they prepare for a charity concert, a stone's throw from Boo's old flat, they discuss the origin of the song and what it means to each of them.
As Maitland explores places in Cambridge which influenced the song, he also examines the University town's association with Angels.
The line from 'Patience of Angels': 'there's a door in a wall in a house in a street' could easily have fallen out of the pages of a CS Lewis story; and Lewis expert Dr Michael Ward explains to Maitland the author's fascination with angels inherent in his work.
The journey concludes in the apt surroundings of St Luke's Church in Cambridge, where a packed crowd watch Eddi and Boo perform a unique version of the song especially recorded for the programme.

When Courtney Met Chris
Courtney Pine talks to jazz trombonist Chris Barber about his life's work and how his initiative and enthusiasm for American blues music helped provide inspiration for a new generation of British musicians.
Barber has been a professional jazz musician for almost 55 years. Along with the likes of Kenny Ball and Acker Bilk, he was an integral part of the 'trad jazz' boom in the 1950s which swept the dance halls of austere postwar Britain.
However, while others stood still, Barber set about acknowledging the huge debt he and his fellow musicians owed to the legacy of American blues musicians, and engineered tours for artists including Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Muddy Waters, and Champion Jack Dupree. These visits gave emerging players like Eric Clapton and Van Morrison a chance to see their idols, and introduced the true stars of blues to a whole new generation. Van Morrison talks about the impact that Chris made on his music and on the British music scene as a whole, and his belief that Chris' contribution should receive wider recognition.
Andy Fairweather-Low explains how rehearsing with Chris changed his whole appoach to music, and reveals the man's hidden talents as a racing driver. In a newly-discovered interview, Chris' ex wife, singer Ottilie Patterson, remembers stepping out with Big Bill Broonzy, the pride she felt in being compared to Bessie Smith and how she was chatted up by Muddy Waters, backstage in Croydon.
Archive interviews with Chris' business partner Harold Pendleton reveal the moment when they knew the blues baton had been passed, as thousands of teenage girls rushed into their festival to see The Rolling Stones perform.

The Thinking Machine and My First Experience with the Great Logician
To prove logic solves all, the Thinking Machine, Professor Van Dusen challenges the world chess champion to a game and helps a newspaper reporter out of a sticky situation. Read by Eric Meyers.
Meet America's answer to Sherlock Holmes - Professor Augustus SFX Van Dusen. Tragically, his creator Jacque Futrelle died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912.
"Logic, logic, logic. Two plus two makes four, not some of the time, but all of the time." That's the unwavering belief of this crime and puzzle-solving Professor, who harnesses the power of his focused mind to think through any problem. This diminutive egghead scientist and irascible genius is known to the world as 'The Thinking Machine'.
In five stories recorded for BBC Radio 4 Extra, he sets out to prove the infallibility of logic in some extraordinary ways. Each tale features classic elements of an apparently unsolvable problem.

Episode 1/5
Set in modern day Naples - vibrant, picaresque, and for some, terrifying -- where the Camorra has its hands in virtually every enterprise, from prostitution and drug running, to rubbish collection, and street vendors - "Le Donne" ("The Women") focuses on Caterina Riccardi, a beautiful, privileged wife and mother who has - until now - lived in wilful ignorance of her husband's criminal business dealings, and the source of her material wealth.
Caterina, who has managed to reach the age of forty three in relative innocence, adhering to the philosophy of "see no evil, hear no evil", must come to grips with the dark and violent world of the Camorra, and bring her understanding and will to bear on it - or see herself and her family destroyed.
She must quickly awaken from her wilful slumber, learn to exert her power in a predatory and dangerous milieu, and is then forced to make a terrible moral choice.

MON 06:30 From Birmingham to Beijing: The Lure of a Chinese Career (b015b92b)
For many graduates in the UK job prospects at home look bleak. It's difficult to find work, paid or even unpaid, regardless of qualifications. Today, more and more students and even graduates are heading abroad to find their work experience, travelling as far as China to work for free.
Safraz Manzoor looks at both the challenges and opportunities that they encounter. How, for example, can you possibly deal with the language barrier and cultural differences that working for a Chinese company will entail?
He visits students working in law firms, international real estate, finance and advertising to find out if they are getting genuine work experience. In Shanghai he meets Daniel and Natalie, both from Hong Kong Chinese families living in the UK. They have decided that China is offering better opportunities than they would find at home. In Beijing, Sarfraz meets students who have been thrilled by an unexpectedly lively social life, and others who feel they would like to have been more integrated into the Chinese world. He asks them what they make of the political situation in China, so different from what they have left behind in the UK.
These young hopefuls are often forking out for the privilege of this work experience. One organisation in the UK is charging students around £1800 for the chance to be placed in Chinese law, finance and marketing companies. Do they get value for money?
Sarfraz Manzoor tells the fascinating story of modern day Britons who have had to find their work experience far from home.

Capital interweaves the lives and stories of the residents of Pepys Road in an utterly compelling, post-crash, state-of-the-nation novel told with compassion, humour and truth; epic in scope, yet intimate and contemplative.

WED 06:30 Lanyon's Last Flight (b00yyg27)
In August 1964 the artist Peter Lanyon died as the result of a gliding accident. He was 46, had enjoyed successful shows in New York, and his work was being eagerly sought. Today he is recognised as one of the most innovative painters in 20th century British art.
Lanyon's great painting, Thermal, has been admired by the thousands of visitors to his recent retrospective at Tate St Ives. It's a painting that grew out of Lanyon's passion for gliding, yet its vivid abstract forms and resonant colour express his lifelong attempt to create a visual language for his intense experience of the environment - his quest for an art of 'placeness'.
This programme follows Lanyon's creative journey, which began with his deep immersion in the landscape and history of his native Cornwall and took him to the experimental edge of international abstract art in the 1950s.
Michael Bird tracks Lanyon to places that were crucial to his art, like the ruined tin mine at Levant and the cliff-top airfield from which he flew. He talks to Lanyon's sons, who each shed a different light on their father's complex personality. He asks Lanyon fans in Tate St Ives what draws them to his work, and Lanyon expert Toby Treves about his wider reputation.
We also hear archive appreciations of Lanyon from Mark Rothko and the poet W.S. Graham reading 'The Thermal Stair', his powerful elegy to his artist friend. Lanyon himself speaks about how gliding influenced his art.
Like Jackson Pollock's fatal car crash eight years earlier, the story of Lanyon's last flight speaks of a generation of artists for whom art demanded physical immersion in the act of painting and a wholehearted faith in the creative accident.

The Problem of the Auto Cab
When Hutchinson Hatch is unknowingly involved in a jewel robbery, he turns to The Thinking Machine.
Born in Georgia in 1875, American author Jacques Futrelle wrote almost 50 tales featuring Professor Van Dusen, as magazine serials and published collections.

Le Donne, Episode 5
Written by Chris Fallon.
Based on an original idea by Rosalynd Ward and Chris Fallon.
5/5 Set in modern day Naples - vibrant, picaresque, and for some, terrifying - where the Camorra has its hands in virtually every enterprise, from prostitution and drug running, to rubbish collection, and street vendors - "Le Donne" ("The Women") focuses on Caterina Riccardi, a beautiful, privileged wife and mother who has - until now - lived in wilful ignorance of her husband's criminal business dealings, and the source of her material wealth.
5/5. Caterina finally knows the truth about Franco. But can she take control of the business and commit murder for the honour of her family?
Chris Fallon is a writer and director. This is his first original radio drama. He has previously written for film and television as well as writing adaptations for radio. He has sold and optioned scripts to Paramount and Warner Bros. His short film "Killing Joe" was nominated for an Academy Award.
Cast includes Indira Varma, Anton Lesser and Haydn Gwynne.
Original music composed and performed by Simon Russell.
Produced by Rosalynd Ward

FRI 06:30 Change of Art (b015zm9b)
Public artist Andrew Shoben explores a controversial new idea to 'rotate or retire' public artworks.
The last three decades have seen a flourishing of public art in our towns and cities with works adorning every new housing estate, shopping centre or local park. But what was bold and innovative in the eighties may now seem tired, decrepit or meaningless. In a bid to refresh our cities and rescue 'orphaned' works, Andrew sets out to explore the arguments around relocating more of our artworks.
In Trafalgar Square he examines the Fourth Plinth phenomenon with Sandy Nairne of the National Portrait Gallery, and a trip to Antony Gormley's studio reveals the artist's hopes for his most famous creation, Angel of the North. Andrew also visits the Cass Sculpture Park in Sussex where owner, Sir Wilfred Cass, offers works from top sculptors. We hear from local authority art departments about the process of commissioning and de-commissioning work for our communities.
There's a historical precedent too. Italians weren't afraid of moving their public art around, or retiring it and replacing it with something else. Donatello's Judith and Holofernes was moved around Florence three times between 1455 and 1505, before it was replaced with Michelangelo's David.
With his company Greyworld, Andrew has created public artworks for several UK cities, including the robotic bust close to the Tate Modern in London. But who decides how long his works, or any artworks in the public realm should occupy their space?
Tasting his own medicine Andrew speaks to people passing one of his own sculptures to find out if they love it or if they'd prefer that it be replaced by something, anything else.

Series 12, Mendelssohn's Octet
This exploration of the impact that Mendelssohn's Octet has had on different people's lives, demonstrates the healing power of music in a variety of situations around the world.
Mendelssohn wrote his Octet for double string quartet in 1825 when he was only 16 years old. Despite his youth, this is a mature and brilliant piece of music described in this programme by the interviewees as "carnivalesque", "a romp", "a party".
Choreographer Bill T Jones describes the way in which the Octet showed his company how to keep living during the onslaught of AIDS in the 80's. Cellist Raphael and violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch talk about falling in love whilst learning this music in the 70's. South Korean Lisa Kim tells a story about going on tour with the New York Philharmonic to North Korea and her intense fear and mistrust being replaced by wonder when they played the Octet with a North Korean Quartet. And Matthew Trusler describes the importance of playing this work after the death of his son.

FRI 22:30 Nurse (b03y15jr)
Series 1, Episode 5
A brand new series starring Paul Whitehouse and Esther Coles, with Rosie Cavaliero, Simon Day, Cecilia Noble and Marcia Warren.
The series follows Elizabeth, a Community Psychiatric Nurse in her forties, into the homes of her patients (or Service Users in today's jargon). It recounts their humorous, sad and often bewildering daily interactions with the nurse, whose job is to assess their progress, dispense their medication and offer comfort and support.
Compassionate and caring, Elizabeth is aware that she cannot cure her patients, only help them manage their various conditions. She visits the following characters throughout the series:
Lorrie and Maurice: Lorrie, in her fifties, is of Caribbean descent and has schizophrenia. Lorrie's life is made tolerable by her unshakeable faith in Jesus, and Maurice, who has a crush on her and wants to do all he can to help. So much so that he ends up getting on everyone's nerves.
Billy: Billy feels safer in jail than outside, a state of affairs the nurse is trying to rectify. She is hampered by the ubiquitous presence of Billy's mate, Tony.
Graham: in his forties, is morbidly obese due to an eating disorder. Matters aren't helped by his mum 'treating' him to sugary and fatty snacks at all times.
Ray: is bipolar and a rock and roll survivor from the Sixties. It is not clear how much of his 'fame' is simply a product of his imagination.
Phyllis: in her seventies, has Alzheimer's. She is sweet, charming and exasperating. Her son Gary does his best but if he has to hear 'I danced for the Queen Mum once' one more time he will explode.
Herbert is an old school gentleman in his late Seventies. Herbert corresponds with many great literary figures unconcerned that they are, for the most part, dead.
Nurse is written by Paul Whitehouse and David Cummings, who have collaborated many time in the past, including on The Fast Show, Down the Line and Happiness.
Written by Paul Whitehouse and David Cummings with additional material from Esther Coles
Producers: Paul Whitehouse and Tilusha Ghelani

Series 3, Episode 6
From the mind of Chris Morris leaks onto radio in this dreamlike combination of comedy and music. With Julia Davis, Kevin Eldon, David Cann, Mark Heap and Amelia Bullmore.
Are you still lying curare-still, seeking relief in feigning dead? Then welcome, oo-tazz welcome. Chris Morris is here to help you wallow in the melancholy, for third series of this subversive radio classic.
Immediately prior to Blue Jam's initial burst on radio, Chris Morris had caused a furore with Channel 4's Brass Eye. Yet Blue Jam managed to be a total departure from his previous work. Originally airing in the early hours on BBC Radio 1, it's a blend of ambient music, deadpan ( sometimes brutal ) sketches and offbeat monologues. A whole audio landscape of the subconscious, the ad-hoc low-fi sheen of production lending it a kind of verisimilitude.
In sharp contrast with the personality-led comedies of recent years, Blue Jam makes a virtue of anonymity. Borat scribe Pater Baynham and Father Ted creator Graham Linehan are among the writers. Rightly winning a clutch of Sony Awards, it remains unique - nothing before or after was remotely like it.
Scripted by Chris Morris, Peter Baynham, Julia Davis and Graham Linehan.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 1 in February 1999.
