SAT 01:30 Ibiza: Britain's Balearic Soul (b013r76j)
The island of Ibiza has subtly influenced British youth culture and the nation's night-time economy for more than 20 years.
The Balearic attitude to nightlife and entertainment was first adopted in Britain during the late 80s and soon many young Brits would no longer be divided by class, race, football allegiances or even sexuality, instead becoming united by their devotion to house music, recreational drug taking and warehouse parties or raves.
By the mid-90s, millions of ordinary young people spent their weekends 'dancing on drugs' and, as alcohol sales dropped and customers fell away, the licensed leisure industry replaced so-called spit 'n' sawdust pubs with more modern bars while bottled beers and alcopops became the new drinks of choice. With Radio 1 broadcasting live from the world's house music clubs, dance music culture moved into the mainstream and has stayed there ever since.
In 'Ibiza: Britain's Balearic Soul' Dr Kate O'Brien meets those at the heart of these changes. Internationally celebrated DJ Paul Oakenfield shares with Kate his first experience in Ibiza and how he tried to recreate the island's bohemian, hedonistic party scene, while Radio 1's Pete Tong explains how he pushed the station into being part of this unrelenting youth movement.
Kate also hears from a former Chief Constable on his struggle to manage 40,000 party-goers at an all-night rave, and experts on alcohol and drug consumption tell how society and government reacted to the 'normalisation' of recreational drug taking and young people's determined move away from the limitations of licensed premises over two decades.
The history of British dance culture and clubbing is complex and fascinating, and Kate explores its impact on young people's identities and lifestyles since the late 1980s

SAT 02:45 Book of the Week (b016pfyh)
Jeanette Winterson - Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?, Episode 5
'Why be happy when you could be normal ?' was the parting shot fired at the 16 year old Jeanette as she left the home of her adopted mother, Mrs Winterson. The words echoed through the author's life as she repeatedly sought happiness and love whilst constantly being aware that her early life had included neither.
When she was six weeks old baby Janet became Jeanette and was taken into the home of two Pentecostal Christian parents in the small town of Accrington. The tyranny of her mother's peculiar belief system and her uncompromising rules meant that the young Jeanette grew up being told that the devil had led her parents to the wrong crib. Mrs Winterson banned books from the house but read the Bible aloud every night; she also kept a revolver in the duster drawer and refused to share a bed with her husband. Jeanette was frequently punished for misdemeanours by being locked outside and left to spend the night on the doorstep. Nothing was 'normal' in the household. Jeanette was supposed to grow up and become a missionary in Africa, instead she fell in love with another girl and was subjected to an exorcism.
Elements of the story are familiar to those who read her fictionalised version of this childhood in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1985). This memoir exposes some of the harsher truths and more bizarre incongruities. But it is also the story of how in later life, and recent years, the profound sense of loss and absence was catastrophically detonated by the end of a relationship. Struggling to remain intact, still clinging to her passion for language and literature, the author began to rebuild her sense of self and the way she lives her life. Love arrived and so too did a sense of home - and with it the courage to go back into the past and find the person who had always wanted her in those first few weeks of life.
Funny, acute, fierce and celebratory, this is a tough-minded search for belonging, for love, an identity, a home, and a mother.

SAT 04:00 The 3rd Degree (b01s09kc)
Series 3, Bath Spa University
A lively and funny quiz show, hosted by Steve Punt, where a team of three University students take on a team of three of their professors.
Coming this week from Bath Spa University, the specialist subjects are Creative Music Technology, Creative Writing and Physical and Environmental Geography, with questions ranging from VAT rates and model railways all the way to Meet The Kardashians and the Ku Klux Klan - via Mo Farah and Dame Nellie Melba.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds, and the 'Highbrow and Lowbrow' round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, film, and One Direction.
The resulting show is funny, fresh, and not a little bit surprising, with a truly varied range of scores, friendly rivalry, and moments where students wished they had more than just glanced at that reading list.
The host Steve Punt, although best known as a satirist on The Now Show, is also someone who delights in all facets of knowledge, not just in the Humanities (his educational background) but in the sciences as well. He has made a number of documentaries for Radio 4, on subjects as varied as "The Poet Unwound - The History Of The Spleen" and "Getting The Gongs" (an investigation into awards ceremonies), as well as a comedy for Radio 4's Big Bang Day set in the Large Hadron Collider, called "The Genuine Particle".

SAT 08:00 Crying, Waiting, Hoping: The Story of Buddy Holly's Last Tour (b00h9y5n)
Steve Harley tells the story of the 'Winter Dance Party', an ill-advised bus tour of the Midwest, which ended tragically with the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper.
The sound of Buddy Holly & the Crickets prefigured the coming wave of rock and rollers in the 60s, influencing musicians like The Hollies and The Beatles. And in the aftermath of his death, Holly's legend has grown in books, on stage, and on screen.
The programme looks at the personal and business circumstances which led Buddy Holly to embark on this relatively second-division tour, in an awful winter, and how a seemingly unrelated number of incidents conspired to bring about his death.
It also covers the legal issues which have affected Buddy Holly's legacy and reassesses the often-overlooked talents of Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper.
It features interviews with the members of Holly's band, guitarist Tommy Allsup and drummer Carl Bunch, as well as contributions from Crickets' drummer Jerry "J.I" Allison and guitarist Sonny Curtis.
There are also memories and thoughts on Buddy from Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Keith Richards, Don Everly, Hank Marvin, Carl Perkins, Bobby Vee, Little Richard, Los Lobos, Tony Hicks of The Hollies, Mike Pender of the Searchers, Maria Elena Holly and Don Mclean.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 2 in January 2009.
SAT 09:00 The Lives and Work of Somerset Maugham (b054051p)
William Somerset Maugham was one of the most commercially successful English writers ever. His plays, short stories and novels effortlessly sold in their millions; his work on stage, page and screen drew huge audiences. He remains the English writer most adapted for film and TV. And yet he described himself as possessing only a "knack" for writing and his place among the literary greats as being only "in the first row of the second rate". Despite his huge popularity with a mass audience, the literary establishment dismissed him as "middle brow".
Yet the subjects he wrote about, and his complex and exotic lifestyle moulded the image of the successful 20th century writer - a wide circle of famous friends, a villa in the South of France, the adulation of readers across the globe and the ears of the Empire's leaders. His own long life, too, reads like the plot for a novel. Born when Disraeli was Prime Minister, he died when the 60s were in full swing. He trained as a doctor, dedicated himself to being a writer, and spent time as a World War One spy. He travelled the globe in search of material for stories - chronicling the boredom, frustration and scandals of the colonial class of empire builders.
His private life was complicated. In England he seemed a pillar of the establishment, yet he set up an exotic and promiscuous lifestyle in a villa on the Cote d'Azur with a succession of gay lovers. His last years were marked by an extraordinary, toxic family quarrel, betrayal and a public fall from grace. He died on December 16th 1965 in Nice, France.
Simon Fanshawe examines the literary legacy and complex private lives of Maugham in the company of writers, performers, biographers and family members.

Poetry and the Russian Soul 2
BBC Radio 4's Poet in Residence, Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's radio poetry archive with Poetry and the Russian Soul.
Continuing a short but epic adventure through the heart and soul of Russia's poetry. Martin Sixsmith explores the 'strange kind of love' , often fatal, that Russia's poets have had for their homeland. And asks can you understand Russia better through its verse?
Poetry is uniquely linked to Russian identity and nationhood. Effectively a creation of the18th century, it was vital in creating a natural language and form of expression as modern Russia forged a separate identity from the old world of the Slavonic church.
But more importantly, it carried far greater weight than the poetry of the West. From the days of the Czar to the fall of Communism, Russian poetry was charged with a powerful and often fatal responsibility to convey the essential truth of the nation. Russia, after all, is one of the few countries where writing poetry can amount to a death sentence.

Read by Tim Pigott-Smith
Arthur C Clarke is one of the world's best-known and most celebrated Sci-Fi writers. His short story "The Sentinel" was the inspiration for Kubrick's seminal film, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Since he began publishing in the 1940s, Clarke displayed an uncanny ability to predict the future. Alongside his literary achievements, he's recognised as the inventor of the communication satellite, a theory he first expounded in a 1945 article, "Extraterrestrial Relays".

SUN 18:30 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (b007jm2k)
Primary Phase, Fit the Sixth
Arthur and company escape from a war, but exactly when have they escaped to? By Douglas Adams. From April 1978.
Arthur Dent is one of only two survivors from Earth, demolished to make way for a by-pass. He survived thanks to his friend, Ford Prefect (who hails not from Guildford, but somewhere near Betelgeuse), a writer for the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, "the most successful book ever to have come out of the great publishing corporations of Ursa Minor". They've managed to escape from Restaurant at the End of Universe on the Black Ship only to find themselves where they never thought they'd be, only 2 million years earlier. What on earth are they going to do when face to face with 'how, why and where phases' of galactic development?
The global multi-media success story that is "Hitchhiker's" started life as a Radio 4 series in March 1978. The original scripts by the late Douglas Adams then went on to spawn a series of novels, a feature film, at least three stage shows, a TV series, a computer game, a collection of comic books - and various towels.
The Guide helpfully informs us that the most obscene expletive in the Galaxy is "Belgium".
Douglas Adams was born in Cambridge and died in 2001 aged 49, after a fatal heart attack in his gym in California.
The answer to the meaning of life, the universe and everything is 42.
With Peter Jones, Simon Jones, Geoffrey McGivern and Jo Kendall. Produced by the late Geoffrey Perkins.

Comedy by Robbie Hudson and Marie Phillips
Stephen Fry and Daniel Rigby star as Napoleon's horse Marengo and Wellington's horse Copenhagen in the moving epistolary tale of two horses deeply in love but sundered by history. With an introduction by Tamsin Greig.
This week artistic differences threaten to destroy our heroes' love for each-other as both attempt to find fame as writers. But is the literary horse public ready for Marengo's experimental, Proustian and incredibly long exploration of what it is to be a horse? Or is there more of a market for Copenhagen's rather racier "Fifty Shades of Hay"?
Produced by Gareth Edwards.

MON 06:30 The Wire (b00x338l)
The Music of the Wires: wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson is captivated by the extraordinary sounds of the wind and the weather as they play on vast lengths of fencing wire stretched across the Australian landscape.
Alan Lamb is an artist, biomedical research scientist and composer who has long been fascinated by the vibrating qualities of telegraph wires. As a young boy he was introduced to the music of the wires during walks with his sister and their nanny, who showed the children how to press their ears against a telegraph pole to 'hear the sound of the world'.
Years later, when he was a student on a camping holiday in Mull, Alan pulled into the side of the road and fell asleep in his van. He was woken by an extraordinary sound. It was produced by the telegraph wires overhead as they waxed and waned in the wind. Alan was transported by the sounds and became determined to record their music.
Since then, he has worked with abandoned telegraph wires on several sites across Australia and installed new structures in order to produce and record music from them. Alan has also completed extensive research into auditory perception and developed theories relating to the wire music and its behaviour.
In this programme, wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson, who has long been interested in the sounds of the wind, travels to Australia to meet Alan Lamb and some of his colleagues at The Wired Lab Project. He discusses their work and its evolution and records for himself some of the extraordinary music of the wires.

Series 1, Desperately Seeking Peace and Quiet
A stellar cast of Miriam Margolyes, Alison Steadman, Nigel Planer, Morwenna Banks, Jonathan Coy and John Sessions breathes life into the colourfully chaotic characters of Gloomsbury, a riotous new comedy about the Bloomsbury Group.
The six-part series from the pen of Sue Limb is an affectionate send up of the infamous literary group whose arty and adulterous adventures dominated the cultural scene in the early 20th century.
In Episode Two, the novelist Ginny Fox is visiting her friends Vera Sackcloth-Vest and Henry Mickleton, who live in a modest unassuming little castle in Kent.
Ginny has writer's block, so Vera tries desperately to provide peace and quiet, gagging the blackbirds and cloaking the gravel paths in velvet. But their tranquil idyll is shattered by the explosive arrival of Venus Traduces, hell-bent on recapturing Vera's heart with a series of appalling musical serenades.
Ginny's tiresome husband Lionel has followed her incognito with a portfolio of herbal remedies, but Henry manages to detain him in the pantry whilst Ginny and Vera dive under the covers to devour a steamy new book, Lady Hattersley's Plover by the intriguing proletarian writer D.H. Lollipop. The chums emerge flushed and enthralled, convinced that they must meet D.H. Lollipop and experience his dangerous animal magnetism at first hand.

Friction between the two Jacobite soldiers comes to a head and results in a bust-up with broadswords. This prompts anthropologist Andrew Merron to introduce them to the modern world of therapy. The two soldiers can't agree who should have therapy first; they can't even agree how they should decide who should have therapy first. It is only when they are forced to live separately, with a dreary cousin of Merron's and his fussy Uncle that Rab and Macdonald start to realise each other's true merits.

TUE 06:30 Unbuilding Detroit (b011p5nw)
In a city that has shed almost fifty percent of its population since its peak in 1950 - the problem of abandoned houses and crumbling neighbourhoods in Detroit is a significant one.
As architect Dan Hoffman, remarked, "unbuilding has surpassed building as the city's major architectural activity." Since 1970 almost one-third of the city's occupied houses, more than the total number of occupied dwellings in the entire city of Cincinnati, has been demolished - but many more still remain.
The city has become a site of artistic pilgrimage for some - often times painted as a ghost town, with images that contain no trace of humanity - just skeletal, abandoned structures reaching up into the sky. But concealed behind the symbolism of this grand, decaying industrial city and its emptiness lies a vibrant network of artists, activists and architects - seeking to beautify, to transform and to re-imagine Detroit.
In this programme we discover how charred, crumbling buildings and dilapidated factories - remnants of Motown's industrial past- have been transformed into riots of colour and sound. Featuring contributions from the artists Scott Hocking, Tyree Guyton and Olayami Dabls.

New series from multi-award winning Mark Watson. Assisted and impeded in equal measure by henchmen Sam Simmons and Will Adamsdale, he revives his quest to make some sort of sense of life, against the backdrop of a world that has, in recent times, come to seem even more peculiar than usual.
The tenacious trio take on some of human life's central topics - family, spirituality, Scandinavia. Watson peddles his unique, high-octane stand-up while Simmons and Adamsdale chip in with interjections which include (but are not limited to) music, shopping lists, life advice, stunts, avant-garde offerings and divvy interactions.
Expect big laughs, controlled chaos and an attempt to answer the one question none of us can quite escape from - what exactly is going on?
This week, the theme is possessions. We spend a lot of life accruing stuff. Does it really make us happy? Would we be better off throwing it all in the river? Is there a middle ground where we can throw most of it in the lake, but keep our car because it's useful?
Mark Watson is a multi-award winning comedian, including the inaugural If.Comedy Panel Prize 2006. He is assisted by Sam Simmons, winner of Fosters Edinburgh Comedy Award 2015, and Will Adamsdale who won the Perrier Comedy Award in 2004.

WED 06:30 Warsaw Variations (b018cg7v)
Panufnik and Lutoslawski were the great hopes of Polish music at the outbreak of World War Two.
During the Occupation, opportunities for musical development were severely limited, but an artistic life sprang up in the cafes and bars of Warsaw. For four years, Lutoslawski and Panufnik made a living playing arrangements of popular and classical tunes (most famously the Paganini variations) to mixed audiences of music lovers, nationalist resisters and cultured Wehrmacht officers.
Warsaw Variations traces the experiences of these two young musicians through the Occupation, the Warsaw Uprising (in which virtually all their manuscripts were destroyed) and into the era of Socialist Realism.
Immediately following the war Panufnik was designated 'Composer Number One'. But by 1954, he'd had enough of pleasing the authorities and defected to Britain. Lutoslawski stayed in Poland and emerged as one of the most prominent composers of the late 20th Century.
With contributions from two men with memories of Warsaw's war-time cafe culture - actor and former waiter Witold Sadowy and musicologist Wladyslaw Malinowski, as well as Panufnik's widow, Lady Camilla Panufnik; the music scholar and Lutoslawski expert Adrian Thomas; Panufnik's biographer Beata Boleslawska, and a historian of Polish musical life under the Nazis Katarzyna Naliwajek.

Roland, whose entire academic life has been devoted to studying Ash, decides, recklessly to pocket the letters and try to determine exactly who they were written to.
This is the beginning of a quest that will change literary history and with the help of a feminist literary scholar Maud Bailey, they are determined to find out the truth behind these letters. Certain other characters hear about the letters and are eager to get their hands on them for their own financial gain and will do so, by any means necessary, and so the chase begins.

Series 4, Episode 2
Listen Against is the comedy that takes the back off your radio and television, fiddles round with the programmes inside and then puts them all back the wrong way round.
Using "beautifully crafted, scalpel sharp" (Gillian Reynolds) mash-ups of current and archive programmes Listen Against creates a "sly, sharp, smart, surreal, satirical" world (Sunday Telegraph) where Alice Arnold and Jon Holmes look back in amplitude of at a week's worth of broadcasting like a media tapeworm going through a dog.
Like "the mischievous offspring of Points of View and The Day Today" (Observer) fictional listeners bombard Listen Against with fictional letters and emails complaining about half-fictional programmes while fictional guests and real life presenters (this series includes Melvyn Bragg, Jeremy Vine and Vanessa Feltz) argue with each other in "a gem of a satirical swoop at radio and television." (Guardian).

Writing about the first series of Living with Mother, Radio Times described it as "Alexander Kirk's astutely-observed comedy series...underpinning each of these tales is a bittersweet poignancy, a moment when the easy laughs are replaced with a lip-trembling insight into the vulnerability, lack of self-confidence and interdependency".

THU 06:30 In for the Kill (b011j8zb)
Crime writer Mike Phillips investigates the coming of age of black British crime fiction and asks why there is still a reluctance to see the black detective as hero.
In recent years as the ethnic mix in the UK has changed, the literature produced by black Britons has embraced broader themes beyond questions of identity and freedom. The autobiographical narratives of the past are being superseded by a new generation of writers who are tackling other genres - notably crime fiction.
Mike Phillips was one of the first to delve into this area with Sam Dean, the journalist who features in his novels Blood Rights and The Late Candidate. In this programme, he meets other writers who are following his example, and discovers what their work tells us about modern Britain. The UK still lags behind the US where novelists such as Walter Mosley and Barbara Neely have captured the black crime fiction genre. Phillips discovers why this is the case.

Roland Michell, an academic research assistant, is completing some work in the London Library, when he comes across two unfinished letters written by the Victorian Poet, Randolph Henry Ash. Theses letters have obviously not been found by anyone else and they are not to his wife but to an unknown woman.

Coming this week from the University of Leeds, the specialist subjects are Civil Engineering, Popular Music Studies and Psychology, with questions ranging from dada and Dylan, to concrete and cogwheels - via penguins and postage stamps.

Meeting Demelza
Shortly before his death in 2003, Winston Graham wrote a story for the Cornish magazine, Scryfa. He recounts an imaginary meeting with his best-loved and most spirited creation. Read by Ewan Bailey

Winston Graham was one of the most successful and prolific novelists of the 20th century. He wrote in many genres but his best known body of work was undoubtedly the 12 historical novels set in Cornwall at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries which became known as The Poldarks.

Although it's the Poldarks that brought Winston Graham the most fame, he also wrote more than 30 other novels, six of which have been filmed including the thriller, Marnie directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1964.

This selection celebrates the range of his work and offers a glimpse into the enduring appeal of his most famous characters, Ross and Demelza who are set to return to BBC screens in a new adaptation.
