SATURDAY 30 JANUARY 2016
SAT 00:00 The Laxian Key (b007k30w)
Episode 4
Evans the Welsh vigilante aims to senselessly bomb the planetary decontaminationists for melting Earth.
Stephen Hawking once warned us that our species could soon be wiped out by plagues, asteroids and our tendency to destroy ourselves. The solution, he suggested, was for us to colonise other planets. But Chris Larner and David Gilbert's sci-fi comedy sees the truth as a little more complicated.
The Laxian Key shows how, as soon as Man steps onto another planet, he promptly fouls it up just as he did earth. The heroes of this wonderfully wacky tale are two interplanetary decontaminationists.

SAT 01:00 R Austin Freeman - Thorndyke, Forensic Investigator (b01r7bhp)
Series 2
Rex v Burnaby
At first glance it looked like a simple bullion robbery, but Thorndyke's investigations reveal that nothing is as it first appeared. Read by William Gaminara.
John Thorndyke, barrister and doctor of medicine, possesses an armoury of skills that equip him as the first scientifically plausible "forensic" detective. R. Austin Freeman, his creator, was himself a medic with an extensive knowledge of forensic medicine, and the solutions to the puzzles are completely plausible. In fact the scientific detail and authenticity of Thorndyke's investigations go much further than anything in the Holmes stories, though Freeman was happy to acknowledge his debt to Arthur Conan Doyle:
"A fellow doctor, Conan Doyle, had made a brilliant and well-deserved success by the creation of the immortal Sherlock Holmes. Considering that achievement, I asked myself whether it might not be possible to devise a detective story of a slightly different kind; one based on the science of Medical Jurisprudence, in which, by the sacrifice of a certain amount of dramatic effect, one could keep entirely within the facts of real life, with nothing fictitious excepting the persons and the events. I came to the conclusion that it was, and began to turn the idea over in my mind."
Thorndyke's work-life stretches over four decades from the early 1900s until the Second World War, a period during which Freeman wrote more than 20 novels and several collections of short stories, from which the six in this series are selected.
The reader William Gaminara is best known as pathologist Leo Dalton in the BBC's long-running series 'Silent Witness'.
Producer: John Taylor
Made for BBC Radio 4 Extra by Fiction Factory and first broadcast in 2013.
SAT 01:30 Bandits of the Blitz (b00tmtj8)
With Britain at war and London under siege from the Luftwaffe, everyone's pulling together. Or are they? Whilst bombs rained down and long-suffering Brits helped each other, some people were simply helping themselves - stealing, looting, and making money on the black market.
The Second World War created vast opportunities for crime. Warehouses were robbed, army stores rifled and forgers kept busy providing false identity documents, ration books and clothing coupons. Looters, stealing anything of value, cleaned out blitzed houses.
The blackout and bombing provided perfect cover for safe cracking and Post Office raids. Professional criminals thrived. People like Billy Hill, who despite prison terms used his wartime muscle to become, in his words, "Boss of Britain's Underworld".
Complex emergency rules left normally-law-abiding citizens facing the courts. Shopkeepers who fell foul of the tangle of red tape faced heavy fines.
Even as the war ended, rationing continued, and the black market flourished. Presenter Duncan Campbell unearths once-secret papers that put Billy Hill at the centre of London's organized crime in the 1950s.
Using archive accounts and talking to people who were there, Campbell tells the tale of crime on the home front. With interviews from Billy Hill's son, Justin Hill, former jewel thief Peter Scott, veteran ex police officers, and historians and academics.
Presenter Duncan Campbell is a former crime correspondent for the Guardian.

Basavana: A Voice in the Air
A portrait of Basavana, the radical poet and religious guru from the 12th century, whose words have inspired many other Indian poets, writers and dramatists. Professor Sunil Khilnani tells the story of a man whose deceptively simple verses protest against the immorality of the caste system and proclaim the intrinsic value of people who happen to be born poor. "His verses ... are what best explain him. They have a directness that reveals to us a free thinker, social reformer and religious evangelist who sometimes struggled to resist worldly temptations," says Professor Khilnani. Basavana was an inspiration to his followers yet his life came to a bitter end. His teachings are kept alive by a substantial religious community called the Lingayats who are concentrated in Northern Karnataka.

SAT 04:00 The 3rd Degree (b01fhrjh)
Series 2
Queen Mary, University of London
Coming this week from Queen Mary, University of London, "The 3rd Degree" is a funny, lively and dynamic quiz show aimed at cultivating the next generation of Radio 4 listeners whilst delighting the current ones. It's recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in a genuinely original and fresh take on an academic quiz. Being a Radio 4 programme, it of course meets the most stringent standards of academic rigour - but with lots of facts and jokes thrown in for good measure.
Together with host Steve Punt, the show tours the (sometimes posh, sometimes murky, but always welcoming!) Union buildings, cafés and lecture halls of six universities across the UK.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the 'Highbrow & Lowbrow' round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, film, and Lady Gaga... In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds, in which students take on their Professors in their own subjects, were particularly lively, and offered plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides...
The resulting show is funny, fresh, and not a little bit surprising, with a truly varied range of scores, friendly rivalry, and moments where students wished they had more than just glanced at that reading list...

Rebuilding Britain for the Baby Boomers
Maxwell Hutchinson analyses the great push to re-build post war Britain.
In the 1990's architect and broadcaster Maxwell Hutchinson began recording interviews with the men who re-built Britain after World War 2. These idealists - then in their eighties- told how they'd returned from war to a country ravaged by the Luftwaffe, determined to design a country fit for heroes . Many were graduates of the left-leaning Architectural Association and brought their radical ideas, influenced by le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, to building social housing for slum clearance families ; hospitals for the infant NHS; schools for the children of the Butler Education act; and bold new tower blocks that would transform the city skyline. Most of them worked for local authorities and saw their profession as a public service. These "duffle-coated pip-squeaks" as they were known, included Sir Phillip Powell ,Sir Andrew Derbyshire , Ivor Smith, Peter Smithson , the father of Brutalism; Lord Esher and Jim Cadbury Brown. Many have since died. Using these interviews, plus newsreel and contemporary archive , this programme captures that idealism and reflects the later disillusionment when modernism - and architects - fell out of fashion.
2011 was the fiftieth anniversary of Parkhill Flats, Sheffield. It was seen as the embodiment of the modernist movement - streets in the sky to replace the grim terraces bulldozed after the war to give families indoor lavatories, central heating and airy balconies. At first the families couldn't believe their luck - they loved their modern new homes. But as the building began to show cracks, and the community spirit failed to translate from slum-terrace to deck access, Parkhill Flats became a by-word for all that was rotten in the state of post war architecture. It wasn't long before residents starting chucking their rubbish over the balconies, and the flats became the new slums. Peter Smithson, once blamed the residents of his much criticised development, Robin Hood Gardens (a sister project to Parkhill) for letting the building go to rack and ruin; for "painting their doors purple" and not applying "the minor arts of occupation".
Parkhill Flats - the largest listed building in Europe - is undergoing extensive renovation by the trendy developers Urban Splash; so the story of this emblematic building, which Sheffielders love and loathe in equal measure, is still a talking point. Maxwell Hutchinson goes back to Parkhill to see the renovation, talk to former residents and find out if the post-war dream of the young architects who designed this colossal building can be revived.

Series 2
The Stalking Horse
When Miss Dalby, a leading light in the suffragette movement, is accused of the murder of a man on a train, Thorndyke takes up the case for her defence.

Amir Khusro: The Parrot of India
By turns warrior, prisoner of war, court poet and passionate Sufi devotee, Amir Khusro was above all a quick-witted literary survivor. And his ability to write for all manner of patrons and audiences, added to his faith in Sufism, would help his words endure for 700 years. Sunil Khilnani tells the story of the man who called himself 'The Parrot of India'.
After a career as a soldier, Khusro gained fame in the royal courts of Delhi where poets improvised and extemporised for their patrons, competing with each other in a kind of medieval poetry slam. But despite being the most admired court poet of his time, he eventually suffered burnout and turned for spiritual strength to the great Sufi Muslim saint Nizamuddin Auliya. From then on his poetry focussed on the ideal of Sufi devotion, a merging of identity between master and follower.
Sunil Khilnani visits old Delhi and Khusro's tomb where his songs, passed down through 700 years of oral tradition, are still performed. Those songs have also come to live in the unconscious of millions of Indians through their use in cinema. Javed Akhtar, one of the great song-writers of Indian cinema, pays tribute to his 13th century predecessor.
The founding fathers of modern India made Amir Khusro a mascot of cultural harmony. Sunil Khilnani explores the life of a Sufi Muslim who has become the embodiment of the nation's unofficial motto: 'Unity in Diversity'.

Ian Bostridge is recognised as one of the greatest Lieder interpreters today. He has made numerous award-winning recordings of opera and song, and gives recitals throughout Europe, North America and the Far East. He was the original Caliban in Thomas Ades's The Tempest, and played Aschenbach in the landmark 2007 production of Britten's Death in Venice at ENO. Evil Narbara
The hit Radio 4 series 'Fags, Mags & Bags' returns with a 4th series with more shop based shenanigans and over the counter philosophy, courtesy of Ramesh Mahju and his trusty sidekick Dave.
Written by and starring Donald McLeary and Sanjeev Kohli 'Fags, Mags & Bags' has proved a hit with the Radio 4 audience with the show also collecting a Sony nomination and a Writers' Guild award in 2008. This brand new series sees a crop of new shop regulars, and some guest appearances along the way from the likes of Mina Anwar and Kevin Eldon.
In this episode a rowdy party shop run by an unfriendly sort causes havoc amongst the local traders association after a number of undesirables descend on the town.
So join the staff of 'Fags, Mags and Bags' in their tireless quest to bring nice-price custard creams and cans of coke with Arabic writing on them to an ungrateful nation. Ramesh Mahju has built it up over the course of 30 years, and is a firmly entrenched feature of the local area. Ramesh loves the art of the 'shop'.
However; he does apply the 'low return' rules of the shop to all other aspects of his life. Ramesh is ably assisted by his shop sidekick Dave, a forty-something underachiever who shares Ramesh's love of the art of shopkeeping, even if he is treated like a slave.
Then of course there are Ramesh's sons Sanjay and Alok, both surly and not particularly keen on the old school approach to shopkeeping, but natural successors to the business, and Ramesh is keen to pass all his worldly wisdom onto them whether they like it or not!

TUE 06:30 Composing New York (b00t1zc7)
New York City has always drawn composers from the Old World - from Dvorak and Mahler to Kurt Weill, Rachmaninov and Benjamin Britten. Some, like Puccini, crossed the Atlantic to premier new works, others like Gustav Mahler and Bela Bartok stayed for longer periods to compose, study and conduct. But all were shaped by the energy of New York, just as the city's musical culture was shaped, in turn, by them.
Behind this extraordinary cultural exchange lay a deeper question: what should a truly American "classical" music sound like? Did it lie outside the concert hall and with the Broadway musical, as envisaged by Kurt Weill? Or was it Dvorak's iconic New World symphony, with its powerful invocations of the black American spiritual, that pointed the way?
Filled with the sounds of NYC, British composer and New York resident Tarik O'Regan presents a vivid portrait of the city which electrified these great composers and, through their works composed and premiered in New York, transformed the wider world of classical music.

Kabir: Offender and Offendables
Today's subject is the low-caste weaver and poet who dared to upturn the social orthodoxies of 15th century India - and who still challenges us today. Sunil explores the life and poetic legacy of Kabir - a dissenter, a provoker and an abrasive debunker of humbug.
There are plenty of legends around the poet - for example that, after his death, his body transfigured into flowers so that he could be neither cremated by his Hindu followers s nor buried by Muslim devotees - but we actually know very little about Kabir's life. One of the few certain facts is that he lived in India's most sacred city, Varanasi. Sunil Khilnani finds himself in the poor neighbourhood of Bajardhia where low-caste Muslims still work today as weavers. Sitting in cramped rooms among men with little work, Sunil reflects on the man who described himself as 'a patient weaver's son' but who is actually one of the most impatient, acerbic, fed-up voices in the Indian cultural canon.
Kabir has become venerated across northern India as a saint, almost a god. Yet Sunil finds Kabir's name being invoked in secular circles too, for example the annual Jaipur Literary Festival, a 21st century haven for independent thinking. Here he meets the eminent poet Arvind Krishna Mehrotra, translator of Kabir's poems into modern idiom and an advocate for the poetic dissenter who wasn't afraid to offend the powerful.

Andrew Maxwell is one of the UK's most informed and fearless stand ups.

Andrew kicks off with a look at the food industry.
From horseburgers right up to snail ice-cream, it seems like there's something wrong with every rung of the food ladder. But given that food is essential to survival, shouldn't we be clearer about what it is we want from the industry that provides it?

WED 06:30 Sidekick (b00sfy5g)
The sidekick is not, by definition, the focus of our attention. They are destined to be overshadowed by their better half, the hero who will save Gotham, solve the uncrackable case or rescue the girl from the bad guys...
But without the sidekick these heroes would often remain too distant, too powerful or just too brilliant for us to ever really love them. So in steps the earthy, flawed and loyal sidekick to provide the audience with someone to connect to, a character who knows how the world really works to help the hero off tilting at windmills.
Whether it's in countless children's films - think Eddie Murphy's Donkey to Mike Myers's Shrek - or a hundred comic books and cartoons - or high literature from Cervantes to Sterne and Shakespeare to Verne - the sidekick provides the laughs, the pratfall and the focus of our empathy.
Frank Cottrell Boyce talks with those who've created sidekicks, those who've played the parts and those who've studied just how essential these characters really are to making the fiction seem believable and offer a human face to the often inhuman character supposedly at the centre of the show.

Guru Nanak: The Discipline of Deeds
Today's Incarnation is a poet who established one of the great world religions: Guru Nanak, the 15th century founder of Sikhism.
Like the Buddha and Mahavira, the founder of the Jain religion, Nanak was a wanderer. He spent 25 years on the road and is said to have travelled as far as Mecca and the Himalayas. But, unlike his predecessors, when he had achieved enlightenment he returned to his homelands in the Punjab. He taught his disciples that, rather than renouncing the world and retreating from it, they must use their faith to change it from within. Nanak's 'disciplined worldliness' emphasised the importance of work and family.
He also instituted an idea which is practised in Sikh temples all over the world. Sunil Khilnani visits the Gurudwara Nanak Piao in Delhi as they serve the langar, a meal provided by volunteers to anyone who comes, regardless of status, sex or religion. Everybody eats together in an equalizing act, a dispelling of the taboos designed to protect caste boundaries.
Sunil explores the life of a man whose ideas were polemical and provocative. In announcing that "there is neither Hindu nor Muslim" Nanak wasn't proposing a harmonious blend of religions. Instead, he was rejecting other paths and creating an entirely new religion, one which now has around 30 million followers.

The number of people changing their name by deed poll has doubled in the past five years and should top 70,000 this year. With a one hour express service that costs just a few pounds, people are hastening to fill in the forms, make the change and become someone new.
Tim Samuels asks what is driving this self-reinvention - is it divorce, immigration or the quest for a little cheer?
After tea with Christine Hamilton - now Mrs British Battleaxe - Tim heads off to meet some of the migrants, attention seekers, former drunks and others reinventing themselves. He encounters Ian Roberts, who transformed himself into the distinguished actor and playwright Kwame Kwei Armah, a young man called Dylan who changed his surname to reject his undeserving father, and Princess-Rainbow.com who woke up one morning with more than just a hangover.
He brushes dust off the Close Rolls at the National Archives to discover the origins of the deed poll and is on his best behaviour with the Senior Master at the Royal Courts of Justice.
And before he takes the plunge to change his own name, Tim pauses to contemplate identity, aspiration and belonging.

He was a compulsive self-promoter whose presence is felt amongst the ruins at Hampi, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But it is in the Amuktamulyada, his long poetic work, that we hear his original voice which marks, says Professor Khilnani, "the emergence of an individual self, a subjective voice - centuries before the arrival of colonial ideas of the individual".

FRI 06:30 Mayhem at the Ritz (b00sjrv4)
In the 1960s, demand to see the latest music sensation was so high there were insufficient British venues to meet the demand for tickets. The ABC Gaumont and Rank/Odeon cinema chains saw a money-making opportunity. Andrew Collins revisits this unique time to hear how staff coped with thousands of hysterical teenagers, and to reveal an era when health and safety issues were not a concern, but having a good time was the priority.
A small but dedicated band of workers were able to switch working procedures to embrace the new era of the pop package tours. We meet chief projectionist Robert Phillpot, press-ganged into working the curtains, liaising with tour mangers and roadies while making frantic notes about lighting sequences and spotlight cues.
We also find out about the 1963 Beatles tour that kicked off at The Bradford Gaumont. Manager James Whittell recalls escorting the Beatles around the cinema, pointing out the art decor. And hear how rock n' roll legend Little Richard quizzed the manager about where to go in Bradford, as the star stood abandoned outside the empty Gaumont after the show.
Listen out for extracts from a rare interview The Beatles recorded backstage at the ABC Market Street, for the Huddersfield Tape Recording Society. As Beatle Historian Mark Lewisohn confirms, it still makes compelling listening.

Series 2
University of Northampton
Coming this week from the University of Northampton, "The 3rd Degree" is a funny, lively and dynamic quiz show aimed at cultivating the next generation of Radio 4 listeners whilst delighting the current ones.

Mirabai: I Go the Other Way
Sunil Khilnani tells the story of Mirabai, the 16th century mystic poet who is one of India's most revered saints. Mirabai was born into a conservative warrior caste in Rajastan but rejected traditional family life and became a wandering religious singer devoted to the Hindu god Krishna. "All this, of course, was scandalous behaviour," says Professor Sunil Khilnani "But Mira proved herself ungovernable in her spiritual zeal". Mirabai composed up to a hundred songs or bhajans which have been passed down through the centuries by oral tradition. Others have been added in her name over the centuries. Today some see Mirabai as a potent symbol of feminism and self-transformation, others as a passionate religious inspiration.
