SAT 01:30 Gormley on Epstein (b00n86t3)
Artist Jacob Epstein attracted criticism during his turbulent career - his work was seen as too graphic or hard hitting, too 'ugly' or 'distorted', even 'cannibal'.
After his death, the younger sculptor Henry Moore paid tribute to his courage as a pioneering artist who bore the brunt of critical derision, but even today, Epstein has never been properly celebrated for his work at the vanguard of British art.
In this programme made to mark the 50th anniversary of Epstein's death, contemporary artist Antony Gormley redresses the balance, to show Epstein's vital position in art.

SAT 02:15 Noise: A Human History (b01rlsvg)
Restraint
The 16th and 17th centuries brought a new emphasis on self-discipline in every day life - and with it a revulsion against noise of every kind. City authorities banned singing and feasting from public squares and tore down maypoles, while town-dwellers raised petitions against noisy neighbours. Spitting, snorting and breaking wind - once part of everyday life - were now a cause for wrinkled noses and dismay.
Professor David Hendy of the University of Sussex cocks a genteel ear to the polite sound-world of the 16th and 17th centuries.
30-part series made in collaboration with the British Library Sound Archive.
Producer: Matt Thompson.

SAT 04:00 The 3rd Degree (b00zlfhf)
Series 1
Salford
Coming this week from the University of Salford, host Steve Punt puts the questions to lecturers and students alike. So if you'd like to hear a Military Historian humming Beatles songs, a Senior Lecturer in Criminology trying to identify Rihanna, or students trying to list types of fruit that begin with the letter 'P', then this is the quiz show for you. Plus the only time in recording history that the word "pebble" has earned a massive cheer.
"The 3rd Degree" is a funny, lively and dynamic new quiz show aimed at cultivating the next generation of Radio 4 listeners whilst delighting the current ones. It's recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in a genuinely original and fresh take on an academic quiz.
Together with host Steve Punt, the show tours the (sometimes posh, sometimes murky, but always welcoming!) Union buildings, cafés and lecture halls of six universities across the UK.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the 'Highbrow & Lowbrow' round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, film, and Lady Gaga... In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds, in which students take on their Professors in their own subjects, were particularly lively, and offered plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides...
The resulting show is funny, fresh, and not a little bit surprising, with a truly varied range of scores, friendly rivalry, and moments where students wished they had more than just glanced at that reading list...

Broken in Berneval, Soaked in the Sea
Series in which Julian Barnes and Hermione Lee explore the connections between a group of Victorian writers and artists who crossed the English Channel for different reasons.
Julian and Hermione travel to the north coast of France, where, in the late 1860s, the poet Algernon Swinburne spent time, as did the exiled Oscar Wilde some 30 years later. They examine French attitudes to the life and work of both men and the religious themes that link their writing.
In the summer of 1868, local fishermen saved a drunken Swinburne from drowning off the cliffs of Etretat. The bizarre lunch to celebrate his survival was attended by the teenage French writer Guy de Maupassant.
In 1897, an exiled Oscar Wilde held a fete for the locals in Berneval and invited friends including Ernest Dowson to distract him from working on his poem, The Ballad of Reading Gaol. But as Wilde became progressively more lonely, he started corresponding once more with Lord Alfred Douglas.

Remembrance
There are now no living survivors of the First World War, yet Remembrance Day has gained a new and powerful significance in the nation's life. Today we not only commemorate the war dead on Remembrance Sunday, we also mark the anniversary of the actual moment in 1918 when the guns stopped firing with a two minute silence.
This custom, which ceased in 1939, was reinstated in 1995, meaning that today we remember the war dead more actively than any previous post war generation, and arguably more than at any time since the First World War itself. As Professor Jay Winter says, Remembrance is "the spinal column that connects 1918 with 2011".
While the ceremonial rituals of Remembrance have remained constant, their social and emotional meaning has changed over the years, mirroring the massive shifts in British society since their creation more than ninety years ago. Remembrance is now pivotal to British identity, as shaped by the collective memories of two great conflicts. The Second World War especially has infused our culture with feelings of pride, moral worth and British exceptionalism. The Remembrance ceremony has become a crucial moment to sustain this sense of ourselves, despite the more controversial legacy of modern wars.
In this programme, Denys Blakeway explores the Act of Remembrance through recordings of the ceremony, and the debates surrounding it, and asks why Remembrance Day has become so important in the life of the modern British nation, despite the relatively few who have fallen in recent conflicts.
With Professor David Cannadine, Professor Jay Winter, Dr. Adrian Gregory, Dr. Dan Todman, author Juliet Nicholson and forces chaplain, Padre Mark Christian.
Producer: Melissa FitzGerald
A Blakeway Production for BBC Radio 4.

Adventures in Poetry - Kubla Khan
BBC Radio 4's and 4Extra's Poet in Residence, Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's radio poetry archive.
In Adventures in Poetry, Peggy Reynolds explores Samuel Taylor Coleridge's celebrated poem Kubla Khan.
Written in 1797 in a remote farmhouse in the Quantock Hills, the poem came to Coleridge as a vision in an opium-induced dream, which was famously interrupted by a visitor from the nearby village of Porlock. Peggy is fascinated by the fragmentary nature of the poem and the way in which phrases from it have resonated through literature, and even music, ever since.
Peggy is joined by Coleridge's biographer Richard Holmes; James Watt, an expert on the real Kubla Khan; Tim Clayton an expert in 18th culture; and by Martyn Ware, a sound artist who has been inspired by the poem to create a new, and vividly evocative soundscape based on the poem.

MON 06:30 Rosa and Leos (b00vhg35)
In 1926, the Czech composer Leos Janacek was in Britain on a short visit. Addressing the Czechoslovak Club in London, he thanked the person who had been responsible for inviting him, discovering his music and championing him in Britain - not a conductor or a performer, but an elderly Englishwoman named Rosa Newmarch.
Although little known today, Rosa Newmarch was a pivotal figure in making concert-goers in early 20th century Britain appreciate and understand new music from Czechoslovakia, Russia and Finland. She travelled extensively abroad, hearing new works performed and later getting them played in English concert halls. She was friends with composers such as Sibelius and Elgar and she wrote copious programme notes and books on musical trends abroad.
In 1920 Rosa visited Prague for the first time and was immediately taken with the music of Leos Janacek. She eventually met the composer in person and, on her return to England, she began writing about him. She also began mounting performances of his work. In 1926, she managed to persuade Janacek to come to London. Rosa booked the Wigmore Hall and planned an ambitious programme of her friend's music. However, the visit coincided with the beginning of the General Strike. Although the concert of Janacek's work took place, there was little publicity surrounding it, as there were no newspapers being printed. Still, it was an introduction for concert-goers. Rosa had also planned excursions for Janacek which couldn't take place because of the lack of transport. But he did manage to get to London Zoo, where he took down notes of the noises that the monkeys made.
The friendship between Janacek and Rosa continued until his death two years later and was cemented when he dedicated his well-loved "Sinfonietta" to her.
In this programme, music writer and lecturer Peter Avis tells the remarkable and unknown story of Rosa Newmarch and her friendship with Leos Janacek. With contributions from Rosa's grand-daughter, musical experts and extracts from correspondence of the time, he re-evaluates the significance of Rosa's place in musical history.

David Vann - Caribou Island
Episode 1
Caribou Island is the second novel from David Vann, whose groundbreaking first book, Legend of a Suicide, has become a best-seller around the world and has just won the 2010 Prix Medicis Etranger. It will be broadcast just after publication.
Caribou Island is again set in Vann's native Alaska, amid the icy, glacier fed lakes and the remote islands covered in alder and Sitka spruce. And it is on such island, far from any habitation, that Gary, a medievalist who fled to Alaska thirty years ago with his young wife Irene, in search of an idyll, is now determined to begin once again. He will build a simple cabin there and at last find peace. Irene joins him in his endeavour but there are costs.
Meanwhile her daughter Rhoda dreams of marriage with Jim, a dentist, who is about to enter his own 'mid-life crisis'.
Fluid, often funny and sometimes raw, David Vann explores the depths an unravelling marriage can sink to and the hopes the young still entertain.
In the first episode of Caribou Island Gary and Irene load up with logs and set out to build their own piece of paradise.

Sylvia Pankhurst was a deeply committed feminist, anti-racist and anti-fascist. What is less well known is the fact that these anti-fascist views led her in later life to campaign on behalf of one of Africa's most conservative and autocratic monarchs, the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie.
Sylvia's relentless campaign for the restoration of Ethiopian independence after the Italian invasion of 1935 led her to launch a weekly newspaper, The New Times and Ethiopia News. Later she also campaigned against British involvement in Ethiopia, and her efforts were warmly appreciated by the Emperor.
In 1956, aged 74, she accepted Haile Selassie's invitation to live in Addis Ababa. When she died there in 1960 at the age of 78, she was given a state funeral and buried in front of the cathedral - the only foreigner buried in an area reserved for patriots of the Italian war.
Her son, Dr Richard Pankhurst, accompanied his mother to Ethiopia in 1956 and has continued to live there for almost 50 years. He recounts the story of his mother's involvement with Haile Selassie, and talks about how her passion influenced his own life-long commitment to Ethiopia.

TUE 22:30 Don't Start (b01ml8b3)
Series 2
The Notebook
What do long term partners really argue about? Sharp new comedy from Frank Skinner returns for a second series. Starring Frank Skinner and Katherine Parkinson.
The first series of Don't Start met with instant critical and audience acclaim: "That he can deliver such a heavy premise for a series with such a lightness of touch is testament to his skills as a writer and, given that the protagonists are both bookworms, he's also permitted to use a flourish of fine words that would be lost in his stand-up routines". Jane Anderson, Radio Times.
"Writing and starring in the four-parter Don't Start (Radio 4) Frank Skinner gives full rein to his sharp but splenetic comedy. He and his co-star Katherine Parkinson play a bickering couple exchanging acerbic ripostes in a cruelly precise dissection of a relationship". Daily Mail
... "a lesson in relationship ping-pong" - Miranda Sawyer, The Observer.
Series 2 follows hard on its heels. Well observed, clever and funny, Don't Start is a scripted comedy with a deceptively simple premise - an argument. Each week, our couple fall out over another apparently trivial flashpoint - the Krankies, toenail trimming and semantics. Each week, the stakes mount as Neil and Kim battle with words. But these are no ordinary arguments. The two outdo each other with increasingly absurd images, unexpected literary references (the Old Testament, Jack Spratt and the first Mrs Rochester, to name a few) and razor sharp analysis of their beloved's weaknesses. Underneath the cutting wit, however, there is an unmistakable tenderness".
Frank says:
"Having established in the first series that Neil and Kim are a childless academic couple who during their numerous arguments, luxuriate in their own and each other's learning and wit, I've tried in the second series to dig a little deeper into their relationship. Love and affection occasionally splutter into view, like a Higgs boson in a big tunnel-thing, but can such emotions ever prevail in a relationship where the couple prefers to wear their brains, rather than their hearts, on their sleeves? Is that too much offal imagery?
Episode 1: The Notebook
Frank's apparently innocent discovery of an old notebook strangely rekindles Kim's former enthusiasm for Frisbee throwing.

David Vann - Caribou Island
Episode 3
Caribou Island is set in David Vann's native Alaska, amid the icy, glacier fed lakes and the remote islands covered in alder and Sitka spruce. And it is on such island, far from any habitation, that Gary, a medievalist who fled to Alaska thirty years ago with his young wife Irene, in search of an unattainable idyll, is now determined to begin once again. He will build a simple cabin there and at last find peace. Irene joins him in his endeavour, understanding, unlike her husband, that there are costs.
Meanwhile her daughter Rhoda dreams of marriage with Jim, a dentist, who is about to enter his own 'mid-life crisis'.
Fluid, often funny and sometimes raw, David Vann explores the depths an unravelling marriage can sink to and the hopes the young, and young at heart, still entertain.
Today: As Gary grapples with the very foundations of his dream, Jim is entering a world of delight, and deceit, far from his dentist's chair.

THU 06:30 Almanacs: The Oldest Guides To Everything (b00t2mhs)
Ben Schott charts the history of the most influential form of mass publication in the 16th and 17th centuries. At their height, apart from the Bible, almanacs were the bestselling books on the market, with over 400,000 sold annually.
Behind the scenes at The British Museum, Dr Irving Finkel outlines the almanac tradition from Babylonian clay tablet to Gutenberg's earliest printed material. The British Library's Moira Goff lets Ben loose in the archives to peruse The Kalender of Shepherdes and the oldest Old Moore's Almanack.
Combining the characteristics of calendar, self-help manual & pocket encyclopaedia, almanacs contained utilitarian information on just about everything: feast days, when to sow crops, let blood, how to write an IOU, even advice on amateur surgery and DIY abortion. They also included dramatic astrological prophesies about the likelihood of plague, famine and war. Passages were read to boost soldiers' morale in battle and by MPs in the House of Commons.
Almanac compilers were arrested & grilled by parliamentary committees. Did one actually predict the Great Fire of London? Professor Bernard Capp assesses their powerful role in revolutionary politics.
Almanacs played a central part in spreading knowledge, literacy, popular journalism and advertising. Ben digs up early adverts for pills, potions and all manner of quackery. But they were also mocked in all kinds of ways, as Dr Adam Smyth explains.
The blank pages inserted into almanacs were used for jottings of accounts and personal memos, so they also gave us the personal written diary.
The statistical has replaced the astrological but its influence lingers on.

David Vann - Caribou Island
Episode 4
Caribou Island is set in David Vann's native Alaska, amid the icy, glacier fed lakes and the remote islands covered in alder and Sitka spruce. And it is on such island, far from any habitation, that Gary, a medievalist who fled to Alaska thirty years ago with his young wife Irene, in search of an unattainable idyll, is now determined to begin once again. He will build a simple cabin there and at last find peace. Irene joins him in his endeavour, understanding, unlike her husband, that there are costs.
Meanwhile her daughter Rhoda dreams of marriage with Jim, a dentist, who is entering his own 'mid-life crisis'.
Fluid, funny and sometimes raw, David Vann explores the depths an unravelling marriage can sink to and the hopes the young, and the young at heart, still entertain.
Today: Rhoda surprises Jim with unexpected guests and Gary faces another hurdle in the construction of his cabin home.

Born in Canada, he admitted that heavy drinking and smoking from his teens helped preserve the voice, and indeed drove his excessive lifestyle. He 'had to' abuse his body to maintain the voice and he 'had to' be in a Soho pub because it was handy for the recording studios.
Bill's career spanned acting, voice-over work, plus a brief spell as 1970s pop outfit Yin and Yan with friend Chris Sandford. His remains ranked as one of the greats within the advertising industry.

Series 1
Middlesex
This episode of 'The 3rd Degree' is brought to you from Middlesex University, where host Steve Punt puts the questions to students and dons of Child Nursing, Design & Art, Biology and Biomedical Sciences. Topics for questions include whirling astronauts, Wagner's operas, and 300 billion copies of the Queen. So if you've ever wondered which exponential function's derivative is equal to the function itself or what are the exact contents of a Jägerbomb cocktail, then this is the quiz show for you.
Being a Radio 4 programme, it of course meets the most stringent standards of academic rigour - but with lots of facts and jokes thrown in for good measure.
