John Wyndham - The Chrysalids
Episode 2
John Wyndham's post-apocalyptic science fiction classic dramatised by Jane Rogers.
Genetic mutation has devastated the world. Any deviation is seen as the work of the devil, ruthlessly hunted out and destroyed. David Strorm is one of a group of young people who can communicate by transferring thought-shapes. In God fearing, law abiding Waknuk, David and his friends would be classed as Mutants. Will David be forced to flee to the Fringes, the lawless territory inhabited by mutants or risk discovery?
Directed by Nadia Molinari
Written in 1955 Wyndham's novel explores the dangers inherent in discrimination and the threats posed by religious fundamentalism. The 'Old People' who caused the apocalypse are depressingly like us: ' They were shut off by different languages and different beliefs. They created vast problems then buried their heads in the sands of idle faith.' The children of the future (the Chrysalids) are able to 'think-together' and so can rise above the selfish violence and conflicting religions of the past. Wyndham's story of a group of persecuted teenagers is more timely than ever in our post-Fukushima, war-riven, genetically engineered and religiously divided world. Jane Rogers is a playwright and novelist, her latest novel The Testament of Jessie Lamb won the Arthur C Clarke Award this year.

Riding Into Town
The excitement and romance of the wild west was a powerful force on the imaginations of the British from the 1930s until the '70s. Samira Ahmed reflects on the love of the Western.
The American Film Institute defines western films as those "set in the American West that embody the spirit, the struggle and the demise of the new frontier". The term Western, used to describe a narrative film genre, appears to have originated with a July 1912 article in Motion Picture World Magazine.
In this personal exploration, Samira Ahmed will see how Westerns nourished post-war British children and how they explored the politics and fears of their day. Samira says, "I remember sitting at an uncle's house in Hillingdon, possibly celebrating Eid, with lots of Hyderabadi relatives, and we were all - kids and adults alike - gathered round the TV watching the end of the original True Grit."
The programme considers the central cast of characters in the western form. Samira explores her interest in the weird and wonderful women and their ranches full of outlaws, such as Marlene Dietrich in Rancho Notorious: "I especially loved the strong Indian and Mexican women - Katy Jurado in High Noon, as opposed to anaemic Grace Kelly. And there were always strong women in Westerns, holding their own in a deeply macho world. Then there were those secretly gay, camp, polysexual or just plain wacko Westerns - Johnny Guitar, the French critics' favourite, and The Singer Not the Song featuring Dirk Bogarde's highly unlikely Mexican bandido in black leather jeans and gloves."

We all worry about the end of the world, as economists and environmentalists speak in apocalyptic terms everyday. iGOD says that trying to predict the end of the world is as pointless as moisturising an elephant's elbow.
In each episode, an unnamed, all-seeing narrator (David Soul - Starsky and Hutch) shows us that it is stupid to be worrying, as he looks back at some of the most entertaining apocalypses on parallel Earths. Each week our case study is a normal bloke called Ian (Simon Day) who manages to accidentally initiate the apocalypse of a different parallel world through a seemingly harmless single act (telling a lie, being lazy, cooking some lambshanks). A succession of comic vignettes ensue that escalate to the end of a parallel world.
With a full-range of sound effects and wonderfully funny and surreal twists, iGOD will be a true aural extravaganza.
In this episode - how Parallel Earth 888 was wiped out by Ian's desire for fame, which occurs when a meteor crashes into his nose.

Written By Phil Hammond and David Spicer.
Nigel Planer, Celia Imrie, David Westhead, Phil Cornwell and Tony Gardner star in a timely satire on the NHS set in the bewildering new world of Coalition healthcare.
This new sitcom is written by Private Eye's medical columnist, broadcaster, comedian and practising GP Dr. Phil Hammond and David Spicer ('Double Income No Kids' and 'Three Off the Tee'.) As responsibility for the Health Service is stripped from managers and handed to doctors, brothers-in-medicine Roy & Hugh Thornton are struggling to work out what to do with all this sudden money and power. If they can diagnose acute appendicitis surely they can manage an £80 billion health budget. Can't they? But a useless Celebrity TV Doctor, an overly-aggressive South African Nurse and a sinister GP Consortium Chairman don't make their lot any easier.
In this episode Hugh is lumbered with a problem patient, when Roy goes mysteriously AWOL, while cycling for his health. He's worried that Roy's overlooked a possible communicable disease, which could lumber the practice with a disastrous drugs bill and he really needs a second opinion. Trouble is there's only Dr. Jeremy on hand. Which is worse than useless. And anyway it would mean interrupting the STD clinic.

Tales From Tate Modern
A Modern Love Story
Situated in the unlikely environs of a former power station on the banks of the River Thames, Tate Modern is the most visited art museum in the world, and a global landmark. To celebrate its 10th anniversary in May 2010, BBC Radio 4 has commissioned three writers to respond to Tate Modern, in three distinctive ways.
The first in the series is a monologue performed by Clare Corbett. She plays Sophie - a young woman working in Tate Modern's Education Department. Her head is full of facts and figures about the building and its contents, but she has other things on her mind as well: the imminent arrival at Tate Modern of old boyfriend, Liam - who's down from Liverpool for the day.
Written by Mark Burgess

Martyn Wade's comedy starring David Troughton as Kenneth and Barbara Flynn as Clare.
With Margaret Tyzack as Mrs Hooper, Richenda Carey as Miss Grainger-Taylor, Jonathan Keeble as Mr Norton, Wayne Foskett as Maurice, Harry Myers as George and Colleen Prendergast as Jill.
Production note:
'A Home of Their Own' was due to be recorded on location in a house used for a number of Martyn's previous plays, but which had become too noisy for period plays.
Ironically during the recording, the cast and crew had to decamp to a studio as severe building work at both the back and front of the house made the recording inaudible. Perhaps the house was having the last word..?

Alongside him are rival and divorcee Lorna who has been parachuted in from Car Parks to drag the office (and Malcolm) into the 21st century. To her, marriage isn't just about love and romance, it's got to be about making a profit in our new age of austerity.
There's also the ever spiky Mary, geeky Luke who's worried he'll end up like Malcolm one day, and ditzy Anita who may get her words and names mixed up occasionally but, as the only parent in the office, is a mother to them all.

Series 3
About Maturity
Nathan decides to prove how mature he is in order to win back the girl that rejected him.
A mix of stand-up and re-enacted family life written by Nathan Caton and James Kettle
Can't Tell Nathan Caton Nothing is a series about young, up-and-coming comedian Nathan Caton, who after becoming the first in his family to graduate from University, opted not to use his architecture degree but instead to try his hand at being a full-time stand-up comedian, much to his family's horror and disgust. They desperately want him to get a 'proper job.'
Each episode illustrates the criticism, interference and rollercoaster ride that Nathan endures from his disapproving family as he tries to prove himself.
Janet a.k.a. Mum is probably the kindest and most lenient of the disappointed family members. At the end of the day she just wants the best for her son. However, she'd also love to brag and show her son off to her friends, but with Nathan only telling jokes for a living that's kind of hard to do.
Martin a.k.a. Dad works in the construction industry and was looking forward to his son getting a degree so the two of them could work together in the same field. But now Nathan has blown that dream out of the window. Martin is clumsy and hard-headed and leaves running the house to his wife (she wouldn't allow it to be any other way).
Shirley a.k.a. Grandma cannot believe Nathan turned down architecture for comedy. She can't believe she left the paradise in the West Indies and came to the freezing United Kingdom for a better life so that years later her grandson could 'tell jokes!' How can her grandson go on stage and use foul language and filthy material... it's not the good Christian way!
So with all this going on in the household what will Nathan do? Will he persevere and follow his dreams? Or will he give in to his family's interference? Or will he finally leave home?!

Absent Without Eve
A third series of short stories written by writers new to radio.
Each year we set them within the environs of Brighton - Pier Shorts, Pavilion Pieces and this year the infamous Lanes of Brighton. More often than not the various journeys lead them beyond the winding Lanes of centuries past and into the Lanes of today, where the antique shops stand beside the more modern examples of what they would once have been, from treasures to cupcakes, and on, across roads, into the place of markets stalls and cafes, buskers and the vibrant life that is the North Laines.
Our first story, Absent Without Eve, is written by Lizzie Enfield. Read by Jan Ravens.
When their children left home, Eve imagined she and her husband David would be free to spend Saturday mornings wandering the North Laines together, sipping leisurely cappuccinos and browsing second hand bookshops. But David has other plans for himself and his recently acquired motorbike - plans that don't seem to include Eve.
