SAT 00:45 Book of the Week (b01qzctq)
Andrew Solomon - Far From the Tree
Episode 5
The time-worn adage says that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, meaning that a child resembles his or her parents. The children described in this book are apples that have fallen elsewhere - some a couple of orchards away, some on the other side of the world. Yet myriad families learn to tolerate, accept and finally celebrate children who are not what they originally had in mind.
Andrew Solomon introduces us to families coping with deafness, Down syndrome, autism, schizophrenia, and disability - as well as families who have children who are prodigies, who are gay, or who become criminals.
While each of these characteristics is potentially isolating, Solomon documents the repeated triumphs of human love and compassion to show that the shared experience of difference is what unites us.
Episode 5 (of 5):
Different kinds of families are constructed or conceived in different ways - just as some children choose to identify with a gender other than the one they were born into. Andrew Solomon is married to his partner John and they are happily involved in the parenting of four children, all with differing family circumstances.

Kevin Eldon is a writer and actor for whom it would probably be quicker to list the brilliant programmes he's not been in than those he has - which include Brass Eye, 15 Storeys High, Spaced, Look Around You, Black Books, Big Train, World of Pub, Jam, I'm Alan Partridge and Attention Scum!. He also wrote and starred in Radio 4's Poets' Tree, in character as the Islington poet Paul Hamilton, and is the singer in Beergut 100.
Mark Steel has presented a range of his own programmes on Radio 4, from The Mark Steel Solution, The Mark Steel Revolution, The Mark Steel Lectures to, most recently, the Sony Silver Award and Writers Guild Award-winning Mark Steel's In Town. Food
iGOD is a highly original and funny new late-night comedy series for Radio 4. It stars Simon Day (The Fast Show) and David Soul (Starsky & Hutch) and is written by one of the head writers of the BAFTA award-winning The Thick Of It, Sean Gray and produced by Simon Nicholls (Ed Reardon's Week / News At Bedtime).
We all worry about the end of the world, as economists and environmentalists speak in apocalyptic terms everyday. iGOD says that trying to predict the end of the world is as pointless as moisturising an elephant's elbow.
In each episode, an unnamed, all-seeing narrator (David Soul - Starsky and Hutch) shows us that it is stupid to be worrying, as he looks back at some of the most entertaining apocalypses on parallel Earths. Each week our case study is a normal bloke called Ian (Simon Day) who manages to accidentally initiate the apocalypse of a different parallel world through a seemingly harmless single act (telling a lie, being lazy, cooking some lambshanks). A succession of comic vignettes ensue that escalate to the end of a parallel world.
With a full-range of sound effects and wonderfully funny and surreal twists, iGOD will be a true aural extravaganza.
Written by Sean Gray
Producer: Simon Nicholls
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2010.

As their friendship develops, they even have nicknames for each other - she is 'Barbara Allen' and he is 'Dapper Dicky'. Elizabeth meanwhile is having much less fun. As Sam admits, she's working like a horse at decorating his closet - as well as being kept awake at night by Sam's disturbed sleep and, worst of all, his snoring! Adapted by Hattie Naylor.

WED 07:30 Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation (b04gyp8k)
Series 10
How to Eat Food
Setting out to explain one of our most fundamental acts as human beings, Jeremy Hardy picks up the topic of food with the chopsticks of enquiry and then drops it on his trousers of former cleanliness.
Helping him tackle the subject will be special guests Vicki Pepperdine and Paul Bassett Davies.
The comedian engages in a free and frank exchange of his entrenched views. Passionate, polemical, erudite and unable to sing, Jeremy returns with another series.
Few can forget where they were twenty years ago when they first heard "Jeremy Hardy Speaks To The Nation". The show was an immediate smash-hit success, causing pubs to empty on a Saturday night, which was particularly astonishing since the show went out on Thursdays. The Light Entertainment department was besieged, questions were asked in the House and Jeremy Hardy himself became known as the man responsible for the funniest show on radio since Money Box Live with Paul Lewis.
Since that fateful first series, Jeremy went on to win Sony Awards, Writers Guild nominations and a Nobel Prize for Chemistry. He was a much-loved regular on both The News Quiz and I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue.

About Intelligence
In a mix of stand-up and re-enacted family life - Nathan Caton illustrates what can happen when you try to prove to your family how clever you are.
Written by Nathan Caton and James Kettle
Young, up-and-coming comedian Nathan Caton, who after becoming the first in his family to graduate from University, opted not to use his architecture degree but instead to try his hand at being a full-time stand-up comedian, much to his family's horror and disgust. They desperately want him to get a 'proper job.'
Janet a.k.a. Mum is probably the kindest and most lenient of the disappointed family members. At the end of the day she just wants the best for her son. However, she'd also love to brag and show her son off to her friends, but with Nathan only telling jokes for a living that's kind of hard to do.
Martin a.k.a. Dad works in the construction industry and was looking forward to his son getting a degree so the two of them could work together in the same field. But now Nathan has blown that dream out of the window. Martin is clumsy and hard-headed and leaves running the house to his wife (she wouldn't allow it to be any other way).
Shirley a.k.a. Grandma cannot believe Nathan turned down architecture for comedy. She can't believe she left the paradise in the West Indies and came to the freezing United Kingdom for a better life so that years later her grandson could 'tell jokes!' How can her grandson go on stage and use foul language and filthy material... it's not the good Christian way!
So with all this going on in the household what will Nathan do? Will he persevere and follow his dreams? Or will he give in to his family's interference? Or will he finally leave home?!

Mark Steel interviews Barry Davies
Chain Reaction is Radio 4's tag-team interview show. Each week, a figure from the world of entertainment chooses another to interview; the next week, the interviewee turns interviewer, and they in turn pass the baton on to someone else - creating a 'chain' throughout the series.
Mark Steel has presented a range of his own programmes on Radio 4, from The Mark Steel Solution, The Mark Steel Revolution, The Mark Steel Lectures to, most recently, the Sony Silver Award and Writers Guild Award-winning Mark Steel's In Town. He also occasionally appears in programmes that don't have his name in the title, such as The News Quiz.
Barry Davies is a commentator perhaps best-known for his football coverage, covering ten World Cups, seven European Championships, and two FA Cup finals. He's also commentated on the Olympics, the Commonwealth games and Wimbledon, as well as the World Stare-Out Championships in 1998.
In this interview, obsessive sports fan Mark asks Barry about being present at some of the most important sporting moments of the last forty years; about remaining impartial ("Where were the Germans? Frankly, who cares?"); and about the changing face of sports and sports broadcasting.

But when show producer, David Hatch, realised that he wouldn't be able to prise Edwards into a studio on a Sunday, Parsons stepped up to the plate to challenge panellists to speak for one minute without hesitation, deviation or repetition, on any subject that comes up on the cards.
Since 1967, Just A Minute has featured some of the UK's finest raconteurs, including Clement Freud, Peter Jones, Derek Nimmo, Kenneth Williams and Sheila Hancock.

People Are Life
It's the last customer of the day for a Cypriot barber and the conversation turns toward friendship. Read by Ewan Bailey.
The 25 short stories that comprise England and Other Stories mark Swift's return to the short form after seven acclaimed novels. The stories dwell on the essence of Englishness and those chosen place us on the eve of the Battle of Trafalgar, in a barbers, a supermarket, a laboratory and Macintyre's warehouse, and in each place and time, Swift perfectly captures a universal truth from the minutiae of lives.
"This is a sharp, beautiful collection: every story quick and readable but leaving in the memory a core, a residue of thoughtfulness: The Guardian
Graham Swift came to prominence with this second novel Shuttlecock, which won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize in 1983. That same year, Swift's Waterland, set in the Fens earned him a place on the shortlist for the Booker prize. Swift would go on to win the Booker prize in 1996 with his novel Last Orders, which became a film starring Michael Caine, Tom Courtney, Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren.

Tracy Borman - Elizabeth's Women
Episode 5
Emma Fielding reads from Tracy Borman's biography of Elizabeth I, which explores the relationships she had with the women in her life. These women brought out the best and the worst of Elizabeth, who could be loyal and kind but also cruel and vindictive. They all influenced Elizabeth's carefully-cultivated image as Gloriana, The Virgin Queen.
In the final years of her reign, Elizabeth begins to lose her grip on matters at court. This state of affairs is reflected in the loosening morals of her newer and younger Ladies-in-Waiting, who she fittingly terms her 'flouting wenches'.
