SAT 14:30 The Doctor and Douglas (b00rp3dw)
As a new generation of fans await the debut of the 11th incarnation of the Doctor, long-time fan Jon Culshaw travels back in time to look at the man who changed Doctor Who forever: Douglas Adams.
After years toiling for success as a writer, in 1978 Douglas' world turned upside down. Just weeks after the radio series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was commissioned, so was his first script for Doctor Who. The following year - just as Hitchhikers was taking off - he was offered the job as script editor, one of the most demanding jobs in television.
The scripts he wrote for Doctor Who - The Pirate Planet, City of Death and Shada - still stand as a benchmark for the series today. But his time on the series was beset by problems. Technician strikes would seriously affect production, inflation was squeezing the series budget, and Douglas was exhausted by the simultaneous demands of Hitchhikers and Doctor Who.
Nevertheless, Douglas left an indelible mark on Doctor Who, bringing in a sharp wit that hadn't been seen before in what was ostensibly a children's TV series. Today's crop of writers and producers strive to emulate the intelligence, humour and ideas in Adams' scripts from 1979.
Jon Culshaw looks at Douglas' work on a television institution, talking to the writers, directors and actors who worked with him, and looks at the legacy of his work on Doctor Who with new executive producer Steven Moffat.
Produced by Simon Barnard and Kieron Moyles. This is a Wise Buddah production for BBC Radio 4.

He also wrote and starred in Radio 4's Poets' Tree, in character as the Islington poet Paul Hamilton, and is the lead singer in Beergut 100. Andrew Solomon - Far From the Tree
Episode 1
The time-worn adage says that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, meaning that a child resembles his or her parents. The children described in this book are apples that have fallen elsewhere - some a couple of orchards away, some on the other side of the world. Yet myriad families learn to tolerate, accept and finally celebrate children who are not what they originally had in mind.
Andrew Solomon introduces us to families coping with deafness, Down syndrome, autism, schizophrenia, and disability - as well as families who have children who are prodigies, who are gay, or who become criminals.
While each of these characteristics is potentially isolating, Solomon documents the repeated triumphs of human love and compassion to show that the shared experience of difference is what unites us.
Episode 1 (of 5):
Growing up gay and also struggling with dyslexia led Andrew Solomon to reflect on those situations where a child arrives in a family and is immediately an 'outsider'. 'Parenthood,' he writes, 'abruptly catapults us into a permanent relationship with a stranger'.

Dave Lamb's brand new sitcom series about conspiracy theorist Dave Railings continues and this week it's aliens.
When the post is delivered on time to the flat that Dave shares with his deeply frustrated younger brother Jim, Dave jumps to the conclusion that their usual, rubbish postman must have been replaced by an alien clone. Jim is initially dismayed, but then realises that Dave's fear of being abducted by aliens (again) gives him his best opportunity yet to escape his disturbed older brother.
Meanwhile community police officers Nigel and Geoff find themselves on duty at a dating march for single people, where the abuse they start to get from the public drives Geoff to drink. And if that wasn't bad enough for Nigel, it seems as if the guvnor has a thing for him. Belly laughs and plot twists as Dave Railings attempts to save the public from its own ignorance and foil an intergalactic scavenger's bid to stockpile human DNA. The truth is out there... possibly.

Debbie Green is dull. Debbie Green is plain. Debbie Green works in Human Resources, where she has few friends, and lives a very mundane existence. That is, until she starts going to visit a hypnotist, who claims to be able to explore people's past lives. And guess what? Debbie, apparently, has had a very eventful past life - she was once Anne Boleyn. Or so Donald Cruikshank her hypnotist excitedly confirms. He is, of course, a charlatan, and he's gulling her. Or is he? Is she gulling him? As the sessions progress, and Debbie starts doing an office round-robin e-mail of her experiences, her popularity at work increases dramatically, as do her career prospects.
In our celebrity-fixated world, what better celebrity to conjure up - and then actually be - than a famous figure of history? And as Debbie climbs that greasy pole to success and high status, she leaves a trail of human devastation in her wake.

Andrew Solomon - Far From the Tree
Episode 3
Episode 3 (of 5):
A child of exceptional ability, such as a musical prodigy, can present as many special needs and challenges to his parents as a child who has disabilities or is different in some other way. The tensions between these children and their parents can create extraordinary pressures and dilemmas.

Sam is asked to advise a nervous young bridegroom about the 'facts of life'. There's good news about the war with the Dutch - Lord Sandwich has taken several of their ships. Sam is so overjoyed that he joins some friends for a celebration. In spite of all the misery and fear around them, they sit up late, drinking and singing, and Sam confides to his diary that he's had one of the happiest nights of his life. Adapted by Hattie Naylor.

Andrew Solomon - Far From the Tree
Episode 4
Episode 4 (of 5):
What happens to an apparently ordinary family when a child commits acts of extreme criminal behaviour? Dylan Klebold was one of the two teenagers responsible for the shootings at Columbine High School. His parents still live in the house where he grew up.

Kevin Eldon interviews Mark Steel
Chain Reaction is Radio 4's tag-team interview show. Each week, a figure from the world of entertainment chooses another to interview; the next week, the interviewee turns interviewer, and they in turn pass the baton on to someone else - creating a 'chain' throughout the series.
Kevin Eldon is a writer and actor for whom it would probably be quicker to list the brilliant programmes he's not been in than those he has - which include Brass Eye, 15 Storeys High, Spaced, Look Around You, Black Books, Big Train, World of Pub, Jam, I'm Alan Partridge and Attention Scum!. He also wrote and starred in Radio 4's Poets' Tree, in character as the Islington poet Paul Hamilton, and is the singer in Beergut 100.
Mark Steel has presented a range of his own programmes on Radio 4, from The Mark Steel Solution, The Mark Steel Revolution, The Mark Steel Lectures to, most recently, the Sony Silver Award and Writers Guild Award-winning Mark Steel's In Town. He also occasionally appears in programmes that don't have his name in the title, such as The News Quiz.
