So Wrong It's Right
Stephen Fry explores the highways and byways of the English language.

With help from a lexicographer, an educationalist, a Times sub-editor and a judge, Stephen examines the way in which usage changes language.
He applauds the council leader who claimed the services provided by her local authority should be seen as strawberry-flavoured and castigates attempts at banning government jargon like step change and synergy. Banning words is fruitless; he favours blue sky thinking, and strawberry flavouring.

Savoy Hill, Broadcasting House, Lime Grove, TV Centre, Maida Vale and Bush House are just some of the iconic BBC buildings brought alive by Nick Baker in this fascinating tour of the archives from 1922 to the present.
After the Queen opened the new extension to London Broadcasting House in 2013, regular guided public tours took place. Sculptor Eric Gill's statue of Prospero and Ariel over the 1932 art deco front entrance sparked controversy over part of the latter's anatomy. BBC buildings have made news ever since.
The BBC's first home in Savoy Hill was described by DG Lord Reith as a miserable sort of place, but for ten years it broadcast a variety of talks and even some agonisingly slow Wimbledon commentaries.
Lime Grove in Shepherd's Bush was bought by the BBC in 1949 to temporarily house its fledgling TV service, but it remained in use for 42 years. Ludovic Kennedy shares its history.
BBC TV Centre is recalled by perhaps the most celebrity vox pop ever assembled.

Series 1
Leee John of Imagination
Aspiring singer/songwriter John Shuttleworth has been posting audio cassettes of his "finest songs to date" to pop stars throughout the land, in the hope that someone would record his material. But all to no avail.
However, the BBC has very kindly given John a series and asked him to invite pop stars to bring their music to his Sheffield home. So it is that Chas and Dave, Heaven 17, Toyah Willcox and Leee John find themselves in John's lounge having tea with wife Mary, being flirted with by Mary's friend Joan and hassled by John's agent Ken Worthington, as they try and perform not only one their greatest hits but more importantly, one of John's.
It's the last show in the series this week but John is feeling a little stressed despite the fact all the jingles are recorded. John's final guest is Leee John from Imagination who's a very busy man involved with charity work, singing, acting and making a documentary - and John is worried that Leee is doing too much and should take things a bit easy. Maybe they could take a trip to the reservoir to check the levels as that's a very relaxing thing to do?
But Leee has been working since the age of 13 and is still full of energy so he's ready to sing one of John's songs, and indeed one of his own. As Leee prepares to sing Body Talk, John settles down to listen and by the end of it feels quite relaxed. But things get tense once more as Ken tries one last desperate attempt to woo a star to his stable. Will Leee be interested? And will Ken finally get to present the item Ken in the Konservatory?

The show's title came from a newspaper headline used in stories about Adolf Hitler in the lead up to the Second World War.
Catchphrases like "TTFN - Ta-Ta for now" and "Can I Do You Now, Sir?" coupled with a frenetic, topical approach made it utterly distinctive.

SUN 09:00 Just William - Live! (b01ph83g)
Series 3
Aunt Arabelle in Charge
In 2012, as part of Winchester's Best of British Festival in celebration of the Jubilee, Martin Jarvis performed the second of two of Richmal Crompton's comic classics, live on-stage.
In Aunt Arabelle in Charge, William and his faithful Outlaws (Ginger, Douglas and Henry) encounter a strangely complacent six year old who is staying in the village. This odious child turns out to be the hugely famous Anthony Martin, subject of his mother's best-selling books and poems.
The Outlaws need to redeem themselves in the admittedly short-sighted eyes of Ginger's journalist aunt. She, equally, is desperate to secure an exclusive interview with the child star. It's soon clear that this wonderfully constructed story is a brilliant parody of - who else - A.A. Milne's Christopher Robin.
The packed Winchester audience understood this at once. In Jarvis' inhabitation of both the smug infant and Ginger's aunt, the comedy is unremitting.
Can William sort this out and, incidentally, give the horrific child his just deserts? Blackmail is the answer, of course.
Performed by Martin Jarvis

SUN 10:00 The Reunion (b00zd8fy)
Comic Relief
In this episode of The Reunion, Sue MacGregor gathers together the founding members of Comic Relief.
The idea first emerged in 1984 when a devastating famine was crippling Ethiopia. Inspired by the work of Live Aid, a group of people led by writer Richard Curtis decided to tap into the great British comedy scene and raise money for Africa. All costs would be covered by sponsors. This would enable the 'Golden Pound' principle - that every penny raised should go to charity.
Comic Relief was launched live on Noel Edmonds' Late, Late Breakfast Show on Christmas Day 1985 from a refugee camp in Sudan. Helen Fielding was the Comic Relief documentary maker leading the project in Africa at the time. The launch raised £1 million. A few months later Comic Relief staged their first live fundraising show at London's Shaftesbury Theatre with performances by Rowan Atkinson, Ronnie Corbett and Kate Bush. That year, they released their first number one hit single with The Young Ones and Cliff Richard.
Comic Relief needed a symbol - something which could be sold in exchange for a donation and which would give the public a way of joining in. On the back of the Red Nose idea came the first ever Red Nose Day TV extravaganza in 1988 - an event which would bring together comedy and charity like never before on live national TV. Richard Curtis recalls 'chaos, panic and tears' behind the scenes. The show raised a staggering £15 million and would go on to become an institution.
Sue is joined around the table by; Richard Curtis co-founder of Comic Relief; Lenny Henry and Griff Rhys Jones who presented the early TV shows; Helen Fielding who was the first Africa documentary producer and Paddy Coulter, who was Head of Media at Oxfam and an early Comic Relief board member.

The Dark Tower was his most famous work, first heard on the Home Service in 1946 and produced again in 1956. The music for this programme was specially composed by Benjamin Britten.
The work was an allegory concerning fate and free will - the title taken from the Robert Browning poem, Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came (which itself was taken from Shakespeare's King Lear, where Edgar proclaims 'Child Rowland to the dark tower came; / His word was still Fie, foh, and fum! / I smell the blood of a British man.')

Adjective from Space!
It's election time on the colony - Richard goes for the youth vote while Brian's campaign is based on feeding everyone some nauseating protein. And just who is the mysterious Security Officer hidden on the colony?
The return of the hit sitcom starring Nicholas Lyndhurst and Vicki Pepperdine ("Getting On") set on a shiny new planet.
Welcome to the colony. We're aware that, having been in deep cryosleep for 73 years, you may be in need of some supplementary information.
Personnel:
Unfortunately, Burrows the leader of the colony has died on the voyage so his Number 2, Brian (Nicholas Lyndhurst), is now in charge. He's a nice enough chap, but no alpha male, and his desire to sort things out with a nice friendly meeting infuriates the colony's Chief Physician Lillian (Vicki Pepperdine), who'd really rather everyone was walking round in tight colour-coded tunics and saluting each other. She's also in charge of Project Adam, the plan to conceive and give birth to the first colony-born baby. Unfortunately, the two people hand-picked for this purpose - Carol and Richard - were rather fibbing about being a couple, just to get on the trip.
Add in an entirely unscrupulous Chief Scientist, Mason and also Archer, an idiot maintenance man who believes he's an "empath" rather than a plumber, and you're all set to answer the question - if humankind were to colonise space, is it destined to succumb to self-interest, prejudice and infighting? (By the way, the answer's "yes". Sorry.)

To kick off the Loose Ends Edinburgh show, 12 of Te Matitini, some of New Zealand's finest Haka performers put on an electrifying display of Maori dance.
Clive giggles with poet and comedienne Pam Ayres, whose wistful, funny, and perceptive verse captures both the joy and unfairness of life. Pam returns to the Fringe with her hair-trigger timing and eye for detail.
Nikki Bedi chats to Sibongiseni Shabalala, a member of choral legends, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and to composer Ella Spira about their collaboration in Zulu ballet 'INALA'. The show celebrates 20 years of democracy in South Africa - a spiritually and uplifting live story-telling experience, with a cultural explosion of music, song and dance.
Clive talks to performer Adrienne Truscott, one-half of the infamous Wau Wau Sisters. 'Adrienne Truscott's Asking For It' is a show that undoes and does in the rules and rhetoric about rape, comedy and the awkward laughs in between.
More dance as Dr Pamela Stephenson Connolly, the writer and inspiration behind dance drama 'Brazouka', a journey of pulsing music and explosive energy, tells Clive how, after her stint in the final of 'Strictly Come Dancing', her pursuit to find the real passion in dancing led her to Brazil, where she founded a dance company and 'Brazouka' was born.
With music from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who perform 'Siyo Phinda Futhi Sibonane' and 'Khulumanaye' from 'INALA'.

The Diary of Samuel Pepys
Episode 1
Kris Marshall plays Samuel Pepys, and Katherine Jakeways his wife, in this new dramatisation of the famous diaries by Hattie Naylor.
On a freezing day in January 1660, a 26 year old man decides to start keeping a diary. It's two years since he had a life-threatening operation to remove a bladder stone and he's feeling pretty well - despite there being quite a lot to worry about. He's behind with his rent, he goes out too often, and drinks too much. He lies awake worrying about work, and despite being happily married, can't keep his hands off other women. For the next ten years, in his secret diary, Samuel Pepys faithfully records the day's events, and confesses his innermost thoughts. He gives us eyewitness accounts of some of the great events of the 17th century but he also tells us what people ate, wore, what they did for fun, the tricks they played on each other, what they expected of marriage, and of love affairs. Over three hundred and fifty years may have passed since Pepys first put pen to paper but the man and his preoccupations feel surprisingly familiar. The world of Samuel Pepys, his wife, his rivals, his lovers and his friends are vividly brought to life in Hattie Naylor's new adaptation.

Episode 2
In this second episode of Hattie Naylor's new adaptation, Samuel Pepys is on a dangerous, secret mission, helping to restore King Charles to the English throne. It starts badly. On the way across the Channel to Holland Pepys' cabin windows are accidentally blown out by a gun salute, and he turns out to be a poor sailor. As he lies groaning with sea-sicknesses in his cabin, he's unimpressed by the suggested remedy of oysters. Once recovered and ashore in The Hague he's impressed by the beauty of the local women, how many languages the Dutch speak, and how neat and tidy Holland looks. On the way home, with the King safely on board, he hears the dramatic tale of Charles' escape from the Battle of Worcester, including how he hid all day in an oak tree.

The hit Radio 4 series 'Fags, Mags & Bags' returns with more shop based shenanigans and over the counter philosophy, courtesy of Ramesh Mahju and his trusty sidekick Dave.
Written by and starring Donald McLeary and Sanjeev Kohli 'Fags, Mags & Bags' has proved a hit with the Radio 4 audience with this series picking up a Writers' Guild nomination for best comedy in 2011.
In this episode Sanjay goes on work experience at the local paper, The Lenzie Trumpet, and ends up writing the problem page which spells disaster for Ramesh and his loyal customers.
So join the staff of 'Fags, Mags and Bags' in their tireless quest to bring nice-price custard creams and cans of coke with Arabic writing on them to an ungrateful nation. Ramesh Mahju has built it up over the course of 30 years, and is a firmly entrenched feature of the local area. Ramesh loves the art of the 'shop'.
However; he does apply the 'low return' rules of the shop to all other aspects of his life. Ramesh is ably assisted by his shop sidekick Dave, a forty-something underachiever who shares Ramesh's love of the art of shopkeeping, even if he is treated like a slave.
Then of course there are Ramesh's sons Sanjay and Alok, both surly and not particularly keen on the old school approach to shopkeeping, but natural successors to the business, and Ramesh is keen to pass all his worldly wisdom onto them whether they like it or not!

Mike Harris - Stevenson in Love
Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes
By Mike Harris.
Based on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic travelogues, journals and personal letters.
Stevenson sets off with a donkey across the Cevennes in France and in the process keeps a journal that later becomes his popular travelogue "Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes." But does his journeying help him to forget the woman he has met and fallen in love with - Fanny Osbourne?
In 1879 and 1880, three years before he was to write 'Treasure Island', Robert Louis Stevenson was a largely unpublished and unsuccessful writer.
Despite his father's wishes, however, he saw his life in literature. In 1876, he had met Fanny Osbourne the woman who was to become his lover and later his wife. At the time of their meeting Fanny was escaping from America with her children - away from a husband who only brought her misery through his serial infidelities.
One of Stevenson's earliest publications was an essay 'On Falling in Love' for The Cornhill magazine.
In 1878 Fanny decided that she had to return to America and to her husband. Stevenson embarked on a walk through the Cevennes with a donkey in 1879 which was later to be published as 'Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes' and in August of the same year he resolved to follow Fanny to America.
His journey was also published - most particularly in 'The Amateur Emigrant'.
Mike Harris' two plays portray these two enormously significant journeys and attempt to capture Stevenson's feelings for Fanny and how they affected him on his travels.

He's not surprised to find himself being offered bribes - that's what happens when you get into a position of power. There's a fashionable new drink - and Pepys goes to try it - but he isn't at all impressed and doesn't think that 'tea' will catch on.
