The novel's impact - and that of the subsequent 1974 film - apparently resulted in New York's City Transit Authority banning any scheduling of a train departing Pelham station at 1:23 for many years.

The Great Listener
Tony Parker was a ground-breaking writer and oral historian - the master of the tape-recorded interview. Whether talking to convicted murderers, the homeless, impotent men or unmarried mothers, his enigmatic quiet empathy meant that people opened up to him with immense honesty and trust. He was the Great Listener.
The result was a unique and expansive body of work, in which he shaped these real-life stories into compelling thematic narratives. By the time of his death in 1996, he had published scores of books, made documentaries for radio and television, and pioneered the genre of verbatim drama.
Although his work was always based on real people in real places, Parker gave all his interviewees and their locations pseudonyms, and he scrupulously destroyed all traces of the interviews-the tapes and the transcripts-once the books were published.
Alan Dein traces the story of Tony Parker through the archive that remains and along the way tries to get behind the pseudonyms and obfuscation and track down some of Tony Parker's interviewees to find out what it was like to open up to the Great Listener.

Bob Dylan
Comedian and actor Lenny Henry asks "What's So Great About...?" people, things, institutions and aspects of contemporary life that frequently go unexplored, unchallenged and widely accepted but which he, personally doesn't really buy.
In this episode, he questions the greatness of Bob Dylan.
Lenny - a great fan of Soul music and Rhythm & Blues - gets to grips one recording artist he never really "got". From the time he was a teenager in Dudley in the early 70s he had to listen to his schoolmate Greg Stokes tell him what a "classic" the Dylan album 'Blonde On Blonde' was; and ever since friends have been trying to convince him that "His Bobness", as Lenny describes him, is the one recording artist to whom he should really devote his energies.
It's now make or break time and Lenny assembles a band of musicians and fans to see if they can, once and for all, change his mind.
"Dear oh dear", says Lenny. "That whine! That grating music!"
Poet Laureate Andrew Motion, Kris Kristofferson, Bryan Ferry, Jools Holland and Al Kooper, who played with Dylan on some of his most famous albums in the 1960s, are among the defence team.
It seems they have their work cut out.
Producer: Patrick Gregory

SUN 10:00 The Reunion (b00tkpc1)
Miss World 1970
In 1970, the Miss World held at the Royal Albert Hall in London was disrupted by feminists protesting that the competition was a cattle market. Bob Hope, presenting the event, stood on a stage pelted with tomatoes and flour bombs. Bouncers were sprayed with blue ink. The women disrupting the competition shouted: 'we're not beautiful, we're not ugly, we're angry.'
Bob Hope's less than enlightened verdict on the events was that anyone who might disrupt Miss World 'must be on some kind of dope'. But the Women's Liberation Movement proved otherwise.
The Women's Liberation Movement's protests at the Miss World contest were not solely aimed at rejecting the event itself though, but more at the implications of the wider exploitation of women in society. Economically and socially, women were subject to continual discrimination and the epitome of such prejudice was highlighted by this public celebration of female beauty.
The programme looks at the event through the eyes of the participants who were involved both on and off stage. It examines their motives for participating in the protest and how those organising the event and taking part as contestants felt about the contest. Sue is joined by the former Miss World of 1970; Jennifer Hosten, one of the key organisers; Peter Jolley and protestors Sally Alexander and Jo Robinson.

FM Mayor - The Rector's Daughter
Episode 1
Juliet Stevenson reads FM Mayor's unfairly Neglected Classic, the story of a plain, reliable parson's daughter whose life of duty and service is thrown into confusion by an unexpected and unsought love affair. Today we are introduced to Mary and her country home.
The Reader is Juliet Stevenson
Abridger Sally Marmion
Producer Di Speirs
FM Mayor's masterful novel, The Rector's Daughter, is a rare thing - a novel with a deceptively small canvas, set in the backwaters of a dull East Anglia a century ago, but still as fresh as ever. Much loved by those who have discovered it, it now comes to Radio 4 as one of the Open Book listeners' Neglected Classics.
At the heart of the novel lie the fortunes of Mary Jocelyn, a dutiful and devoted daughter content to live out her destiny under the leaden East Anglian skies she loves, to find solace in a robin's song and in the rare moments of warmth from her aged and formidable father. But on losing the one soul who really loved and needed her, Mary finds herself unbearably lonely, and for the first time open to new horizons.
With deft precision, FM Mayor captures the emotions stirring in Mary's heart and the pain of thwarted middle aged desire. With her unerring eye, she reveals both the bitterness and strengths of a happy marriage. The Rector's Daughter is acerbic and poignant and much deserves its loyal fans and its place within Radio 4's Neglected Classics season.
FM Mayor was born in 1872 and read History at Newnham College Cambridge when university education was still a rare adventure for a woman. Her fiance died in India and she remained within her family circle for the rest of her life (her father was a clergyman like Mary's). She published four novels and a collection of short stories, of which The Rector's Daughter is the best known; it was much praised on publication by Rebecca West, Rosamund Lehmann, E M Forster and Virginia Woolf. Plagued by ill health, she died in 1932 aged 60.

Laurelmead
No professional care-worker can afford to miss Beauty Olonga's survival guide to Britain - its overheated houses, its disappointing church services and its world-class charity shops. Series 2 of this Radio 4 comedy follows Beauty's continuing adventures as the Featherdown Agency sends her to provide care for the elderly.
Beauty sees herself as an inspiration to other African girls hoping to live the dream in Britain. The series breaks the embarrassed silence about what happens to us when we get old and start to lose our faculties. It shows the process in all its chaotic, tragi-comedy but it does so from the point of view of Beauty, whose Zimbabwean Shona background has taught her to respect age. Beauty sees Britain at its best, its worst and also sometimes without its clothes on running the wrong way down the M6 with a toy dog shouting 'Come on!'
'A British care home is basically a big house named after a tree' observes Beauty, as she decides to work at Laurelmead this week. A change from her usual live in work, but working for the care home brings its own difficulties. There is some good news- her church choir is through to the regional finals of 'Go for Gospel'.

FM Mayor - The Rector's Daughter
Episode 3
Juliet Stevenson reads F M Mayor's unfairly Neglected Classic, the story of a plain, reliable parson's daughter whose life of duty and service is thrown into confusion by an unexpected and unsought love affair. Today Mary travels to London in search of artistic advice and enters a Bohemian world far beyond her normal experience.

King Hussein
Racing driver Jackie Stewart discusses his good friend King Hussein of Jordan with journalist Patrick Seale. From 2001.
Racing driver Jackie Stewart nominates King Hussein of Jordan, a man he came to know as a friend, and who he believes led a great life.
When King Hussein died in 1999, he had ruled his country for 46 years, survived the tumultuous politics of the Middle East and numerous assassination attempts.
Jackie met the ruler early in his career, because King Hussein was a motor sport enthusiast, and he remembers a generous host, who gave good advice.
Joan Bakewell and Jackie Stewart are joined by journalist Patrick Seale, a long time chronicler of Middle East affairs. Patrick argues that, while King Hussein was a well-mannered man and formidable politician, there was a wily side.

FM Mayor - The Rector's Daughter
Episode 5
Juliet Stevenson reads F M Mayor's unfairly Neglected Classic, the story of a plain, reliable parson's daughter whose life of duty and service is thrown into confusion by an unexpected and unsought love affair. Today the newlyweds return to Dedmayne but the path of true love does not run smooth.

Exporting Football
Clare Balding charts how Britain spread the passion for football around the world. She particularly looks at South America where the game is central to their way of life. The FIFA World Cup has been staged 19 times and on 9 of those occasions, it has been won by either Brazil, Argentina or Uruguay.
Professor Tony Mason from De Montfort University explains that unlike cricket and rugby which was spread by soldiers, civil servants and settlers in British colonies, football took a different route. It was taken around the world by those who had made Britain the greatest trading nation in the world, by managers, engineers and teachers.
