SAT 00:06 Unexpected Elements (w3ct5q20)
Political Jet Lag

In the lead up to the US election President Joe Biden admitted to ‘screwing up’ in a debate against Donald Trump. His excuse? Several trips around the world, a cold and severe jet lag. Joe has Marnie and the panel wondering how we can fly better.

We’ll be stopping off to hear how one species, much like the US president, should consider reducing its airmiles, if only to avoid a pointless 16,000km round trip every year. There’ll also be a stopover in Northern Canada to hear how thinning ice is making it difficult for local communities to remain in touch with their ancestral heritage and traditional modes of travel.

Whilst we recommend considering more environmentally friendly alternatives here at Unexpected Elements Airways, we understand that some flights can’t be avoided. Take time whilst onboard to consider how you can reduce the symptoms of jetlag with tricks learnt from the latest scientific understanding of human physiology. Professor Rosemary Braun tells us how the clocklike rhythms of the body can be manipulated to make any long haul flights more manageable.

Also, the smashing specificity of Wimbledon’s grass tennis courts, a grand astronomical debate from the 1920s and a very special Nunavut Day.

Brian Lara: ‘How cricket changed my life’

One of the greatest cricketers of all time, West Indies batter Brian Lara joins Stumped from Lord's to look back on his career; the highs and lows, plus the future of Test cricket and how the sport could evolve. Lara still holds world records for the highest individual score in both first-class cricket and Test cricket.

Alison Mitchell, Jim Maxwell and Charu Sharma also discuss with Lara who could be the next global cricket stars and the West Indies legend pays tribute to England’s record breaking pace bowler James Anderson, who will retire after his 188th Test of his career. Anderson was the last English bowler to get Lara out.

Plus we also hear from the Chair of Cricket Australia, Mike Baird on the latest regarding a possible Afghanistan women’s team. Last week, members of the former Afghanistan women’s team called on the International Cricket Council to help them form a refugee team based in Australia. Over 20 members of the Afghan women's team are based in Australia after the national team was disbanded in 2021 when the Taliban returned to power and banned women from playing sport.

Outlook Mixtape: Metal music, a shock confession, and the ascent of a Mountain Queen

Martin Kanja always knew his great-grandmother had fought for Kenyan independence and was the only female field marshal in the Mau Mau. But as a young boy growing up in Kenya, his main interest was music. He fell in love with metal as a teenager and threw himself into Nairobi's flourishing underground scene. Today he's known as Lord Spikeheart and has dedicated his latest solo album The Adept to his great-grandmother and her achievements.

In 1988 the naked body of Steve Johnson’s brother Scott was found at the bottom of cliffs near Sydney Australia. A verdict of suicide was reached. But this just didn’t make sense for Steve. Scott loved life so why would he kill himself ? The question began Steve’s 35-year quest. Through many setbacks and extraordinary leaps forward he not only found the answer, but shone a light on a dark period in recent Australian history, which set the country on the path to reform.

Arrested for playing football in Brazil

Like many young children growing up in Brazil in the 1960s and 1970s, Dilma Mendes had one dream: to play football for her country.

There was just one problem. It was illegal for women in Brazil to play football at that time, a law that came into force in 1941 - and lasted nearly 40 years.

Dilma lost count of the amount of times she was arrested and taken to the police station for playing football.

She tells Vicky Farncombe the confusion and fear she felt as a child. "I did not understand why people didn't allow me to do something which I loved so much."

She also describes the ingenious ways she hid from the police officers.

Voters in Britain and France

People in both the UK and France have voted for change in snap elections, sending a signal that they are unhappy with many aspects of their lives. To get a sense of why people voted the way they did, host James Reynolds takes a mini tour of towns and cities across the UK.

In Bradford, a city in the north of England, he meets Anna, who is concerned about "having equal opportunities for everyone,”

In the town of Worthing on England’s south coast, which has just elected its first ever Labour MP, Pam and Mike tell James about the challenges they have experienced since Brexit, when Britain left the European Union.

We also visit a café and shop in the port town of Dover, which provides free clothes for those who cannot afford them. We hear concerns about immigration too and we end our journey, across the English Channel in France, to talk to three young voters. One of them, Fernando, tells us why he voted for the far-right National Rally party.

Suicide's silent survivors

In many countries around the world trying to take your own life is still a criminal offence. Journalist and broadcaster Ashley Byrne investigates why so many places still put people who have attempted suicide in prison - and discovers how deep-rooted religious beliefs and cultural attitudes are often behind the criminalisation laws.

Among other places, Ashley looks into Kenya, Bangladesh and Malawi where people face jail sentences of up to two years. He talks to people who have been arrested, beaten up and faced problems rebuilding their lives. Stigma and prejudice is rife in many countries where even speaking about suicide can result in a backlash.

Ashley (whose partner tried to take his own life twice) also speaks to mental health specialists in countries which have recently changed the law like Pakistan, Ghana and Guyana. He hears how despite decriminalisation stigma around suicide continues.

Can the Democrats replace Biden?

Since the CNN Presidential Debate in June 2024 headlines in the US calling for Joe Biden to pull out of the race have been relentless. There have been questions about his age, performance, and ability to run for a second term in the White House.

Biden’s ratings have slipped, and donors and party members have publicly said that Biden should step aside.

Joe Biden maintains he will not go and that he is the best person to beat would-be president Donald Trump.

He does still have staunch supporters and he was democratically elected as presumptive nominee by the electorate.

But with weeks to go before the Democratic National Committee meets to make Biden the official candidate, how easy would it be to find a replacement?

This week on The Inquiry we’re asking, can the Democrats replace Biden?

SUN 04:06 From Our Own Correspondent (w3ct5shx)
A daylight attack on Kyiv

Pascale Harter introduces correspondents’ stories and reflections from Ukraine, Australia, Nigeria and India.

In Ukraine, just recently, 40 people were killed in a single day of multiple missile attacks. Among them, it’s the strike on Ukraine’s main hospital for children that will surely be remembered as a particularly sordid point in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Moscow denies responsibility for attacking the hospital which provides cancer care to children and organ transplants. Kyiv, though, is in little doubt. World leaders at the next day’s NATO meeting in Washington condemned the attack. Our correspondent in Kyiv, James Waterhouse was travelling back to Ukraine when it happened. He describes how the atmosphere in the capital has darkened.

Australia is a “migration nation” – a third of its population was born abroad and it prides itself on its multi-culturalism. But there’s a big exception - many foreigners with disabilities or medical conditions are routinely denied an Australian visa and those already living in Australia face the threat of being made to leave because they are considered a burden. Katy Watson in Sydney has been finding out more.

Nigeria is Africa’s economic powerhouse – and the most populous country on the continent with more than 200 million people, two thirds of whom are under the age of 25. So why are so many of them trying to leave? Last year, Nigerian authorities issued a record number of passports – 1.9 million – to those looking to travel abroad. It’s become so common there’s even a name for it: japa, as Hannah Gelbart discovered in Lagos.

And last month the world’s largest democracy, India finished its six week long election. Prime Minister, Narendra Modi of the ruling BJP lost his majority and for the first time is having to rely on his coalition partners to govern. The BJP’s election campaign was polarising with Prime Minister Modi drawing on Hindu nationalism and anti-Muslim sentiment to garner support. But this seems to have back-fired. Samira Hussein in Delhi explains why she now feels able to wear one of her favourite necklaces again.

The scammers who make you kidnap yourself

It’s one of the most bizarre crimes of our times. Con men posing as police officers are forcing Chinese students to fake their own kidnapping.

In the second part of a special BBC Trending investigation into Chinese police impersonation scams, Elaine Chong reports on the extremes to which criminals will go to make money from their victims.
The scammers trick Chinese people studying abroad into believing that they are wanted for crimes back in their homeland, and that they must hand over large sums of money to avoid repercussions for them or their family.
When the students can no longer meet the escalating demands they are told to fake their own kidnapping so the fake police can seek a ransom from their relatives back in China.
Elaine hears how the victims have to isolate themselves, and are ordered to take photos of themselves tied up with tomato ketchup or make up on their bodies to make it appear they have been abducted and harmed. These images are then used to extort money from their families.
While there has been a crackdown on scam gangs operating from countries like Myanmar and Laos, there are worrying signs that the scams are becoming ever more elaborate and convincing.
With some scammers already adopting artificial intelligence to make deepfake videos, it will become ever more difficult to tell fact from criminal fiction.

Of the tens of millions of people around the world with autism or down syndrome, only a tiny fraction is in paid employment.

But cooking, making drinks and waiting tables is work where people with learning disabilities can shine.

John Laurenson takes us to a Café Joyeux (Happy Café) in Paris, one of a fast-growing chain of cafe-restaurants where most of the staff have autism or down syndrome and where the croque monsieur comes with a smile.

We also hear from a cafe in Mumbai launched by the mother whose daughter has autism and, in Turkey, the KFCs with a difference.

Rethinking mental health

In the US, police officers spend about a fifth of their time responding to mental health crises. This is something they are often not trained for, and figures also show that people with untreated mental illness are 16 times more likely to be killed during a police encounter.

We go to Arizona where some 911 calls are now being responded to by mental health professionals who are trained to de-escalate a situation and help someone experiencing a crisis to get the support they need. This is part of a trend across the United States where a new nationwide mental health helpline called 988 has also recently been launched.

We also visit Denmark, where people going to their doctor with mental health issues are being prescribed ‘culture vitamins’ in an effort to tackle anxiety, stress and depression.

Can technology fight flooding in cities?

With more and more people moving to cities, informal settlements are expected to grow. When floods hit these unplanned places, it can be disastrous, as we often don’t know much about them. Crucial questions often remain difficult to answer, like how many people live there, what are the buildings made of, and could they withstand a flood?

In the township of Alexandra in Johannesburg, the BBC’s Nomsa Maseko visits a project using drones and artificial intelligence to shed some light on the situation, helping authorities prevent the worst impacts of flooding. And in Porto Alegre in the south of Brazil, we hear how an innovative digital map helped the emergency response – and will soon be available to all for free across the world.

What is the weight of the internet?

How do you think about the internet? What does the word conjure up? Maybe a cloud? Or the flashing router in the corner of your front room? Or this magic power that connects over 5 billion people on all the continents of this planet? We might not think of it at all, beyond whether we can connect our phones to it.

Another chance to hear one of our favourite episodes, inspired by a question from CrowdScience listener Simon: how much does the internet weigh?

First of all, this means deciding what counts as the internet. If it is purely the electrons that form those TikTok videos and cat memes, then you might be surprised to hear that you could easily lift the internet with your little finger. But presenters Caroline Steel and Marnie Chesterton argue that there might be more, which sends them on a journey.

They meet Andrew Blum, the author of the book Tubes – Behind the Scenes at the Internet, about his journey to trace the physical internet. And enlist vital help from cable-loving analyst Lane Burdette at TeleGeography, who maps the internet.

To find those cables under the oceans, they travel to Porthcurno, once an uninhabited valley in rural Cornwall, now home to the Museum of Global Communications thanks to its status as a hub in the modern map of worldwide communications. With the museum’s Susan Heritage-Tilley, they compare original telegraph cables and modern fibre optics.

The team also head to a remote Canadian post office, so correspondent Meral Jamal can intercept folk picking up their satellite internet receivers, and ask to weigh them. A seemingly innocuous question becomes the quest for everything that connects us... and its weight!

Cyprus 1974: The Greek coup

On 15 July 1974, the Greek military dictatorship in Athens sponsored a coup on the eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus, aiming to overthrow its selected president and unite the island with Greece.

Days later, Turkey invaded the island, taking a third of it and displacing many thousands of its inhabitants.

The writer Bekir Azgun grew up in the village of Potamia, where Greek and Turkish Cypriots had once lived together in harmony. He speaks to Maria Margaronis about the day of the coup and reflects on the gradual separation of the island's two communities, beginning with the Greek Cypriot anticolonial struggle against Britain in the 1950s and culminating in the Turkish invasion and partition.

No outside power acted to stop this conflict between two NATO members. Cyprus, strategically positioned near the Middle East, remains divided to this day.

The hacker had found intimate pictures on there and was now threatening to send them to all of her contacts: friends, family, colleagues, almost anyone she'd interacted with online. Confronted by this attempt to shame her, Patricia made a bold decision. She has made a documentary about her her experience called My Sextortion Diary. The clip you hear is from her film.

Sally Huband had dreams of hiking the coastlines of Shetland, the Scottish archipelago she called home but then she got sick. Her world shrank, she turned to beach combing and became transfixed by what the ocean would bring to her shores but there was one particular treasure that she set her heart on finding. A 'sea bean' - a large, brown seed from a tropical plant that makes its way across the oceans to remote northern islands. They are very rare and are steeped in magic and folklore. Sally's book is called Sea Bean.

We’ve heard about the potential problems around chicken welfare. But how does that square with their impact on the environment?

Dr Chris van Tulleken finds out what it takes to produce the most eco-friendly chicken meat possible. And makes a devastating discovery. Welfare concerns, and environmental credentials, often pull in OPPOSITE directions. Does he want to eat the happiest birds, or the ones kindest to the planet?

Halfway through his poultry quest, Chris remains massively conflicted: he loves chicken, but some of what he’s discovered makes him question how much he eats it. Will he still be able to look at it the same way as he goes deeper down the rabbit hole? And more importantly, should he keep serving it up to the family?

The child rescue con

Project Rescue Children claims to save children from trafficking and abuse across the world, but the BBC has uncovered evidence of false and misleading social media posts. The charity's director, Adam Whittington, has raised thousands of pounds from sponsors and donors. But the BBC’s Hayley Mortimer has found that unsuspecting children are being used as props, and the rescue centres have no children. Project Rescue Children rejects the BBC's findings and says its work has benefitted hundreds of children worldwide.

Anchi Lin (Ciwas Tahos): Indigenous Taiwan artist

Inspired by a story told to her by an Indigenous elder, Taipei-based artist Anchi Lin, also known by her Atayal name Ciwas Tahos, is working on a new multi-media installation.

Anchi has dedicated her research and creative work to exploring the Indigenous space of Temahahoi, a place where queer, gender non-conforming people lived and could communicate with bees, who were also their protection from approaching intruders.

Combining new technology, handmade ceramics and traditional bee chasing skills, Anchi Lin celebrates her Indigenous culture and identity in her work.

Anchi Lin talks in her studio to Lucy Collingwood, as she works on the performance elements of her video installation. Then from a forest deep in the Taiwan countryside, we follow Anchi as she learns the art of wild bee chasing from an Indigenous elder.

Lucy then joins Anchi Lin as she prepares to take part in an exhibition in Switzerland. Together they gather stones on the shores of Lake Zurich, traditionally used to protect bee hives, to stack as the final part of her installation.

However a new coach Thomas Rongen inspired them to victory.

Cyprus 2003: Crossing the ceasefire line

In April 2003, the people of Cyprus were allowed to cross the ceasefire line for the first time in 29 years.

Hundreds of people rushed to the check points and queued for hours to visit the homes they had left after the Greek coup and Turkish invasion of July 1974. Greek Cypriots made up the great majority of those displaced, often fleeing under fire with nothing but the clothes they had on.

Singer and ethnomusicologist Nicoletta Demetriou’s parents were among them. Nicoletta tells Maria Margaronis about the day the checkpoints opened, the experience of crossing, and her parents’ encounter with their old neighbourhood and its new inhabitants — and reflects on how it changed her.

The Black pioneers of modern emergency medicine

In the late 60s a small group of Black men from a deprived district of Pittsburgh did something remarkable, they smashed through the racial barrier to become the first modern paramedics. They were called Freedom House Ambulance Service. The team was brought together by a visionary Austrian immigrant doctor and a local social studies teacher who trained them up to deliver medical care, in situ, with a vehicle well-equipped for medical purposes. This team would go on to write the training manual still used by paramedics around the world. When John Moon first saw them in action and the respect they commanded from a room full of doctors he knew he needed to join their ranks.

Toxic Positivity

In the last two years, online searches for ‘toxic positivity’ have spiked. In this discussion from the Cheltenham Science Festival, we find out what toxic positivity is, and how it can hurt you and people around you.

In front of a live audience, Claudia Hammond is joined by psychologist Dr Linda Blair, GP and educator Dr Anisha Patel, and wellbeing consultant and content creator Benjy Kusi.

Linda has been interested in the rise in the use of the term ‘toxic positivity’ and has noticed how it’s having an impact on our wellbeing. She reveals why it is important for us not to suppress ‘negative’ feelings and emotions.

Anisha was diagnosed with bowel cancer when she was 39. She authored the book Everything You Hoped You’d Never Need To Know About Bowel Cancer, where she speaks about her diagnosis and treatment journey. She experienced first-hand the harm that toxic positivity can do.

Benjy works with many different companies to help improve their inclusion and wellbeing practices. He’s the author of the book Hope This Helps and posts frequent videos about lots of tricky issues on TikTok and Instagram.

Shaken goalposts

Football rarely stops in Turkey, but when two earthquakes causes tens of thousands to die in the south-east region of the country early in 2023, even the passionately followed Super Lig top division is suspended. Hatayspor - a team from the league - loses its star player Christian Atsu to the rubble of a collapsed building. Its home city of Antakya is all but wiped from the map. A year later, football writer James Montague travels to his home nation of Turkey to tell the story of Hatayspor FC's improbable, and symbolic fight to survive in the aftermath of the disaster.

James meets female ‘ultra’ fan, Songul, who follows her team despite the obstacles of life living in converted-shipping container emergency accommodation. He talks to football icon Volkan Demirel, as the coach battles to keep his side in the league despite their lack of training facilities or a home stadium. Can the team that emerged from the rubble avoid relegation, too?

US dairy farm workers infected by bird flu

The H5N1 bird flu virus has spread from birds to dairy cattle in the United States where a number of agricultural workers have also been infected by it. This is thought to be the first time humans have caught the virus from another mammal and the first time the virus has been detected in cattle.

This unusual development is being tracked by virologists who have followed Bird Flu since it first emerged in Hong Kong in the 1990s.

Since then, across the world millions of wild birds and poultry have died from the virus and over 400 human deaths worldwide have been linked to it. So it is a concern that the US outbreak has emerged in dairy cattle herds and that there has been some human infection - although there has been no person-to-person infection.

This Inquiry examines how the virus infects birds and mammals and what the potential is for further transmission to humans.

Nigeria’s drive to sell more locally-made cars

For decades, Nigeria has struggled to grow its domestic automotive industry while vehicles made by manufacturers from Japan, Korea, Europe and the US have dominated. But critics say many of those cars are not suitable for Nigeria’s roads.

Lately, there has been a surge of “made in Nigeria” brands, of vehicles manufactured and assembled locally, which have been designed with the country’s challenging road conditions in mind.

But as Nigerians are gearing up to the idea of replacing their trusted foreign brands with local alternatives, China has introduced a range of vehicles tailored to the Nigerian market - but cheaper.

Ntando Mahlangu: Walking, running and leaping into the future

Ntando Mahlangu was born with fibular hemimelia, a condition that meant his legs didn't develop fully below the knees. After spending his childhood in a wheelchair, he made the decision to undergo amputation aged 10. When he received his first set of prosthetic "blade" legs, his whole world changed - and four years later, he was on the podium at the Rio Paralympics, with a silver medal around his neck for finishing second in the T42 200m sprint. By the time he turned 20, he'd added two gold medals for sprinting and long jumping to his collection.

So what's he planning to do next?

Eliza Skinner and Ed Harry hear from Ntando about growing up in rural South Africa, and how he's taught those around him to appreciate disabled people for who they are. He explains how seemingly small things in life have made a huge difference to him, and how walking on blades helped him develop as both an athlete and a human being.

He also shares his perspective on being a veteran in his sport at the age of 22, the lessons he's learned about balancing his athletic career with personal development, and why he now feels a responsibility to build para-athletics for the generations coming through behind him: "Those hurdles are for me to jump, and to make sure the guys that come after me just walk through them."

As the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics approach, delve into our archive to discover more stories of extraordinary sporting journeys. Basketball champion Breanna Stewart and shot-putter Raven Saunders explain why they use the platform sport gives them to act as advocates. Swimmer Anastasia Pagonis and rower Brigit Skarstein share how sport helped them rebuild their futures after life-changing events, while Markus Rogan and Maarten van der Weijden talk about the lives they have found after leaving competition behind. Multi-sport stars like Oksana Masters and Jana Pittman reveal what it's like to compete at both the summer and winter Games. There's stories of memorable victories, like the moment high jump champion Gianmarco Tamberi chose to share his gold medal, and Shaunae Miller-Uibo putting everything on the line to reach the top step of the podium. Plus, the triumphs nobody predicted, including Molly Seidel's shock marathon bronze, and the day Anna Kiesenhofer rode away from cycling's biggest names to claim gold in Tokyo.

Hollywood high jinks and a family caught in the spotlight

Griffin Dunne grew up in 1960's Los Angeles where his parents would throw regular lavish parties often attended by the who's who of Hollywood. Griffin was used to living in a family under the spotlight, his mother was an heiress, his father a producer and he was the nephew of two famous writers, Joan Didion and John Gregory Dunne. Following in their footsteps Griffin made his name as an actor in the 1981 cult classic An American Werewolf in London around the same time his younger sister Dominique starred in the Steven Spielberg produced film Poltergeist. However, things took a tragic turn when Dominique was violently killed by her ex-partner and the lives and trajectories of the Dunne family were changed irrevocably.

Instagram’s fake guru

Former Brazilian model, wellness influencer and spiritual life coach Kat Torres was an inspiration and a lifeline to women all over the world. More than a million people on Instagram followed her extraordinary career trajectory from extreme poverty in Brazil, to a European modelling career and a life of luxury in the US.

But behind the perfectly curated posts is a story of witchcraft, sexual exploitation and human trafficking; a dark and secretive sorority that led to missing women and sent their families and the FBI on a desperate search to find them.

After months of investigations, a team from BBC Eye and BBC News Brasil uncover a wellness empire built on half-truths and lies. Georgia's maverick Bishop and his peace cathedral

In Tbilisi, Georgia, a radical experiment in interfaith relations is taking place. The Peace Project is one of the world’s first to bring a mosque, synagogue, church, and other places of worship together under one roof. Sounds of Muslim prayer, Shabbat services, and Georgian hymns fill the air as worshippers from different faiths mingle and break bread in the communal Hall of Abraham.

The project is the brainchild of Malkhaz Songulashvili, a maverick Bishop of Georgia’s Evangelical-Baptist Church, and is attracting attention from religious leaders around the world.

But Songulashvili’s Peace Project is facing opposition from Georgia’s Orthodox Christian establishment and other groups who dislike the idea of different religions mixing in this way.

Dan Hardoon visits the Peace Project to hear from those who worship there and explore whether the idea of peaceful coexistence is strong enough to hold these communities together.

After the attempted assassination of Donald Trump

The former President, with his face bloodied, surrounded by Secret Service agents, the American flag behind him, his fist in the air defiant – how much will that image change the United States? This is the focus of our conversations in this week’s edition of the programme.

We bring together witnesses to the shooting in Pennsylvania and hear from people at this week’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There, supporters with tears in their eyes and bandages on their ears, show their love for Donald Trump.

“There’s a strong sense of the holy spirit being in the room, I can’t express that, it’s very strong, very powerful,” one of the delegates, Melanie, tells host James Reynolds. “I’m very excited about what’s happening, it’s the most powerful experience we’re having here in Milwaukee.”

Since the attempt on Mr Trump’s life, there has been much talk in the US about less confrontational rhetoric in politics. We also bring together three voters – two of them undecided – to discuss this and their options for the November election.

A Boffin Media production in partnership with the BBC OS team.

Why am I afraid of this building?

Buildings inspire many emotions, like awe, serenity or even dread. CrowdScience listener Siobhan was struck by this as she passed a huge apartment block with tiny windows; it reminded her of a prison. So, she asked us to investigate the feelings that buildings can trigger.

Architects have long considered how the effect of buildings on their occupants or passersby: asking whether certain features elicit feelings of wonder or joy... or sadness and fear. And now modern neuroscience has started to interrogate these very questions, too.

How much of the way we feel about a building is to do with its intrinsic design, and how much is due to our individual brain chemistry and life experiences? Presenter Caroline Steel talks to designer Thomas Heatherwick about his ideas for improving public spaces; enters a virtual reality simulation in Denmark to learn about the emerging field of ‘neuroarchitecture’; and finds out why people just can’t agree what makes a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ building.
