Is the future of journalism in crisis?

Over the past year thousands of journalists have lost their jobs as mass media news organisations struggle to make ends meet. Ad revenue is down, many publishers are struggling to gain subscribers, and social media has resulted in plummeting traffic to homepages. More than a third of people worldwide say they sometimes or often actively avoid the news, many citing their mental health and concerns that they can’t do anything about the problems reported. Meanwhile advancements in artificial intelligence promise rapid changes to the way journalism is done. So, what’s the future of journalism?

Shaun Ley is joined by:

Emily Bell, director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia Journalism School

Marais Erasmus: My life as an international umpire

Alison Mitchell, Jim Maxwell and Charu Sharma debate the new rule in the Indian Premier League which allows two bouncers to be bowled in an over. They look at whether this rule is too bowler friendly and how this will impact tactics in the game.

Plus we are joined by South Africa umpire Marais Erasmus who has officiated in 82 international Test matches. In his first radio interview since retiring from international cricket he shares his story of how he got involved in umpiring after playing the game, if he has any regrets and if umpires should be mic'd up.

Erasmus also goes into detail about the controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow in the Ashes in 2023 when he was infamously 'stumped' by Alex Carey and takes us behind the scenes to what happened in the lunch room.

He also details how it felt to stand in the 2019 men's World Cup final and the reason Angelo Matthews was 'timed out' in the 2023 men's World Cup.

Messages from Gaza

BBC OS producer Kristina Völk has been following the lives of several people in Gaza since the beginning of the Israel and Hamas war in October last year.

They have been in contact with her via voice messages, text updates or chats whenever they are able.

And in this edition we’re sharing their experiences across a timeline of six months of four women: Batool, Sanabel, Aseel and Layan.

“My grandparents’ neighbourhood is fully destroyed,” says 18 year-old poet Batool, who lived in Gaza City before being forced to move to the south of the territory. “I lost two of my friends yesterday and I had to cut more than half my long hair because I can’t wash it. There’s not enough amount of water to spend on my hair.”

The messages that Kristina guides you through give a sense of the resilience, fear, strength and despair experienced under the bombardments of war.

“I asked myself who should I cry for first,” says 16 year-old Sanabel in one of her messages. “You lost your loved ones. You lost your friends, your neighbours, your dreams. Everything here in Gaza.”

Sometimes the women were able to send a series of updates when they had a relatively stable internet connection. At other times, weeks and months went by without any contact.

And then Kristina would receive a simple text from one of them that said: “Still alive”.

Rwanda 30 years on

Victoria Uwonkunda makes an emotional journey back to Rwanda, where she grew up. It is the first time she has visited since the age of 12, when she fled the 1994 genocide with her family.

Victoria retraces her journey to safety out of the capital Kigali, to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Along the way Victoria speaks to survivors of the violence – both victims and perpetrators - to find out how the country is healing, through reconciliation and forgiveness.

Victoria meets Evariste and Narcisse, who work together on a reconciliation project called Cows for Peace. Evariste killed Narcisse’s mother during the 1994 genocide. Cows are important in the Rwandan culture. Evariste and Narcisse explain their own journeys to forgiveness, healing and reconciliation. And Victoria meets Claudette, who suffered unimaginable horrors at the hands of a man, Jean Claude, sitting next to her as she tells her story.

There are those who say that the steps Rwanda has taken do not go far enough and question freedom of expression in Rwanda. But Victoria finds hope in the country, a desire to move on for a younger generation – and she finds her own peace with the country that she was born in.

SAT 19:06 The Inquiry (w3ct4wff)
Is climate change impacting chocolate production?

For centuries chocolate has had a global appeal, the key ingredient of this confectionery is derived from the dried and fully fermented seed of the Theobroma cacao, whose origins began in northern Amazonia. From this tree, both cocoa solids and cocoa butter can be extracted to form the basis of chocolate.

Today, it’s the West African countries of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana that produce the bulk of the world’s supply of cocoa beans. But in recent years hotter temperatures and shifts in rainfall patterns have impacted cocoa harvests particularly in this region. And now the global price of this key ingredient has roughly doubled since the start of last year, fuelling concern that demand could outweigh supply.

Cocoa farming itself is mainly small scale and these farmers are at the bottom end of the value chain when it comes to profits. But whilst many of the major chocolate manufacturers do invest in the industry, with support for improved planting and harvesting techniques, farming sustainably is just one of a number of challenges that these small farmers face.

So on this week’s Inquiry, we’re asking ‘Is climate change impacting chocolate production?’

Choking in Chiang Mai

For a period earlier this month, the historic city of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand had the worst air of any city in the world.

The city gained the same unwanted accolade last year. The practice of agricultural burning in the hills around Chiang Mai renders the air so toxic from February to April that it becomes unsafe to breathe. Respiratory problems and allergies caused by PM2.5, a type of pollution, led to more than 12,000 people being admitted to hospital in 2023.

The bad air affects everyone, including the young and physically fit. In December 2023, Krittai Tanasombatkul, a 29-year-old doctor and basketball fanatic, succumbed to lung cancer. Like 40% of people with the disease in the city, he was not a smoker.

The time machine of tradition with Brìghde Chaimbeul, Sam Amidon, Linda Buckley and Rhodri Davies

Brìghde Chaimbeul, Rhodri Davies, Sam Amidon and Linda Buckley discuss the roles of tradition and place in music, and what they might think about when performing.

Brìghde Chaimbeul is a Gaelic musician, composer and bagpipe player. Her music stems from traditional Gaelic material, particularly sourced from archival recordings, of songs, stories and music from the Highlands and islands of Scotland. It also explores wider musical influences, such as a variety of global piping traditions from eastern Europe, Cape Breton and Ireland. She has collaborated with artists including Ross Ainslie, Gruff Rhys, Martin Green, Carlos Nunez and Allan MacDonald. Last year she released the album Carry Them With Us in collaboration with Colin Stetson, weaving together textural drones, trance atmospheres and instrumental folk traditions.

Rhodri Davies is a Welsh musician who plays harp, electric harp and live electronics, as well as building harp installations. He started playing the harp at the age of 7 and is classically trained on the orchestral pedal harp; he also plays a range of different harps, modifying their sounds with different techniques and pushing the boundaries of how the instrument can sound. He’s released seven solo albums and regularly works with groups such as Hen Ogledd, Cranc, the Sealed Knot and Common Objects.

Sam Amidon is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Vermont. He plays the fiddle, guitar and banjo, and is a member of the Icelandic music collective/record label Bedroom Community. He has released a string of acclaimed albums, ranging in theme from interpretations of traditional Irish fiddle pieces to old-time melodies and tales from traditional American folk history. His collaborators include classical composer Nico Muhly, experimental composer/producer Ben Frost, composer/violinist Eyvind Kang, guitar legend Bill Frisell and veteran jazz drummer Milford Graves.

Linda Buckley is an Irish composer and musician who creates electronic and acoustic music working across many disciplines, most notably film, and drone and dark ambient music. She’s worked in many collaborative contexts, including scoring films such as Nothing Compares by Kathryn Ferguson and To The Moon by Tadhg O’Sullivan. Recent collaborators include Liam Byrne and Crash Ensemble, Gudrun Gut and Andrew Zolinsky.

Pascale Harter introduces dispatches from Belarus, Senegal, Timor Leste and Ecuador.

Almost four years after the wave of pro-democracy demonstrations in Belarus which followed the disputed re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko, his political opponents and protesters continue to be arrested. Many of those held are women, who say they are being kept under a Soviet-era form of house arrest known as 'chemical detention'. Monica Whitlock has been hearing their stories.

Senegal has a new president. After an election that was anything but routine, voters chose Bassirou Diomaye Faye as their new leader. James Copnall reported on the vote and talks to the background to his victory at the polls - and the public appeal of his pledges to lead the country with humility and fight corruption.

Michelle Jana Chan visits the coastal waters of Timor Leste, where the rich marine life is attracting the attention of scientists, tour guides and political leaders alike. This tiny country needs revenue - but can a developing tourism industry and conservation go hand in hand?

And Peter Yeung glides through the Amazon’s watery 'ancestral highways' in Ecuador - rivers - with the indigenous communities now using solar-powered boats for their daily river commute.

Moscow attack: Disinfo wars

Who is behind the Crocus City Hall attack? Within an hour of last week’s deadly attack on a concert hall outside Moscow, a campaign was gathering momentum to blame Kyiv for the atrocity while a parallel storyline claimed it was a Russian false flag operation. We track the blame game: the narratives and the counter-narratives underpinned by generous doses of disinformation.

A reckoning with drugs in Oregon

In 2020, the people of Portland, Oregon - a famed city of progressives and counterculture - voted to pass Measure 110, the USA’s boldest drug policy reform yet. It came after years of campaigning, and was aimed at inverting the thinking of the war on drugs.

Measure 110 decriminalised possession of all illicit substances, including heroin, methamphetamine and oxycodone. The campaigners accurately predicted that the new law would ease tensions around racial disparities within policing, but it also coincided with the spread of the deadly and addictive drug fentanyl, and a tidal wave of homelessness.

Fentanyl is up to 50 times stronger than heroin, and is now the drug of choice for nearly all heroin users. It’s also more deadly - activists and the police now regularly carry the opioid-blocking drug Narcan to treat people overdosing on the streets. Homelessness also continues to rise as the cheap and available fentanyl spreads, creating an epidemic on two fronts.

Local journalist Winston Ross explores the complex issues behind Portland’s fentanyl crisis, speaking across the political divide and to many of those in the eye of the storm.

Greener ways to feed the world

Transforming the global food system is vital in the fight against climate change. Currently, food production accounts for a third of all greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, the food system also fails to properly nourish billions of people worldwide.

In this edition of People Fixing The World we’re looking at high and low tech solutions to transform the ways we produce and consume food to make it greener and more equitable.

In London, we visit a startup company making cheese from genetically modified microbes rather than cattle, in a bid to make dairy production better for the planet.

And in Philadelphia, we look at how planting fruit and nut trees in ‘food forests’ is tackling hunger by providing access to healthy, nutritious food for low-income communities across the city.

How is climate change affecting animal migration?

Every year, the great migration sees hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, gazelles, zebras and antelopes migrate from the Serengeti plains in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya, in search of water and juicy grass. But rising temperatures and unpredictable weather are changing this epic animal journey dramatically. It’s the same for great white sharks, which are being spotted in areas where they’d never normally live.

Tanzanian safari guide Neema Amos takes us into the Serengeti to explain why the wildebeest migration is so important. And shark expert Trisha Atwood reveals how these changes affect not just the animals, but our fight against climate change itself.

Helmut Deutsch and Michael Volle: Staging Winterreise

Michael Volle is a baritone singer who has made his name with magisterial operatic performances, particularly Wagner. Helmut Deutsch has been playing the piano alongside the great and the good of the classical world for five decades, including the soprano Ileana Cotrubas and the tenor Jonas Kaufmann.

Performing the 24-song cycle that Franz Schubert wrote at the end of his short life, Die Winterreise, or the Winter’s Journey, is considered the pinnacle of the recital repertoire, even for such accomplished musicians. The trust between singer and pianist must be absolute, because the two performers are, in Volle’s words, “naked and pure on stage”. Deutsch and Volle have a 20-year friendship and working partnership to build on, a musical connection that brings them together to perform this “summit” of singing over and over again.

Yet their next performance will be something out of the ordinary. They are undertaking a staged performance at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, in Barcelona. The musicians will be joined by actresses on the stage, photographs accompanying the music, and newly developed poems interspersed between songs. How will the staging affect the relationship between singer and pianist, and how will it impact the music? Writer and journalist Lluís Amiguet joins rehearsals in Barcelona to find out.

The trailblazing women of the Dakar Rally

The infamous Dakar race (formerly known as Paris-Dakar) is a gruelling off-road endurance rally. Since its inception in 1978, there has only been one overall female winner. Ella Al-Shamahi meets two women who took part in this year’s event.

Aliyyah Koloc is the youngest driver to take part in the race. She’s a 19-year-old professional race driver born in Dubai, raised by a Czech father and a mother from the Seychelles. She grew up with motorsports as her father, Martin Koloc, was a well-known racing driver in the 90s and two-times European Truck Racing Champion. After a first successful career in tennis, Aliyyah switched to motorsports only four years ago.

Motocyclist and rally driver Annie Seel from Sweden is a legend in the motorsports world. She’s been the female Dakar champion for both the motorbike and car categories, and this year was her 11th time taking part. She was also the first woman to set a record climbing Mount Everest on a motorbike and is an advocate for women in motorsports.

How to talk to guerillas

Leyner Palacios grew up around volatile armed groups, so he learned to negotiate with them.

He comes from a remote forested area called Bojaya, where clusters of small villages are spread along isolated waterways. Leyner's community had to share the rivers and forests with outsiders, armed groups like the Farc and the paramilitaries, who were locked into a decades-old conflict. As a child, Leyner learned to constantly navigate checkpoints manned by volatile armed people, and he showed a talent for negotation and mediation. As the conflict heated up, and with his community under siege, these skills would become more useful than ever.

Wild Inside: The Red Kangaroo

Wild Inside returns for a new series to take a look at some of our planet’s most exceptional and unusual creatures from an entirely new perspective: the inside. Whilst we can learn a lot from observing the outside, the secrets to the success of any animal – whether they swim, fly, or hop – lies in their complex internal anatomy. How do these wild animals survive and thrive in harsh and changing environments? To truly understand we need to delve inside.

Professor Ben Garrod, evolutionary biologist from the University of East Anglia, and expert veterinary surgeon Dr Jess French, open up and investigate what makes each of these animals unique, in terms of their extraordinary anatomy, behaviour and their evolutionary history. Along the way, they reveal some unique adaptations which give each species a leg (or claw) up in surviving in the big, wild world.

The series begins with an icon of the outback – known best for its hopping, boxing, and cosy pouch – the red kangaroo. Despite the immense heat and lack of water, these marsupials dominate Australia, with their evolutionary history driving them to success. From the powerful legs which allow them to hop up to 40km an hour, to an unexpected reproductive system that keeps their populations plentiful, Ben, Jess and marsupial expert Dr Jack Ashby reveal a mammalian anatomy which holds many surprises.

Secret sisters: Political prisoners in Belarus

Belarus has huge numbers of political prisoners - around three times as many as in Russia, in a far smaller country. Almost industrial scale arrests began after huge, peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations swept the country in 2020 after Alexander Lukashenko claimed a landslide victory in presidential elections. Mr Lukashenko has been in power for 30 years. Protesters said the result was a fraud, and that they had been cheated of their vote.

Almost four years on, the authorities are still making mass arrests. Many of those detained are women. The most prominent woman prisoner, Maria Kolesnikova, a professional flute player, has been incommunicado for over a year, with no word at all reaching her family or lawyers.

Political prisoners are made to wear a yellow patch on their clothes. The women say they are kept short of food and made to sew uniforms for the security forces, to clean the prison yard with rags and shovel snow. They speak of undergoing humiliating punishments such as standing in parade grounds under the sun for hours.

Yet they also tell us of camaraderie and warmth in their tiny cells as they try to keep one other going. And women on the outside continue to take personal risks to help the prisoners by sending in food, warm clothes and letters.

Sound dreams: The making of a world-class composer

Errollyn Wallen is one of the most-played living composers on the planet. As a girl, she had an insatiable passion for playing the piano and her head was filled with a near-constant soundtrack of music and sound. It feels like a story of destiny – but there were many times when her eventual success was very much in doubt. Born in Belize, she moved to London at the age of two and was raised by her aunt and uncle. Her uncle Arthur’s strict nature dominated her childhood, but he was also the first to recognise the composer within. Despite the obstacles of a possessive aunt and musical directors who felt composing was beyond a woman’s reach, it eventually burst forth in the form of 22 operas and numerous concertos, symphonies, song cycles and chamber works.

7. Are you now, or have you ever been

The House Unamerican Activities Committee begins its hearings into alleged communist subversion in the movie business. The hearings cement a phrase in American history: “Are you now or have you ever been a member of the communist party?” Friendly witnesses, including actors Gary Cooper & Robert Taylor, are called to the stand, along with movie mogul Jack Warner of Warner Brothers. Walt Disney uses the opportunity to call out alleged communists among members of the striking animators’ union. Dalton Trumbo and his allies challenge the legitimacy of HUAC and its hearings.

Sweden's pioneering paternity leave

Fifty years ago Sweden became the first country in the world to offer paid parental leave that was gender neutral.

The state granted mothers and fathers 180 days that they could divide between them however they saw fit.

The pioneering policy was designed to promote gender equality, but it wasn’t an instant success.

Later governments decided to increase the number of leave days available and ring-fenced some specifically for each parent.

Maddy Savage went to meet Per Edlund who was one of the first fathers in his town, Katrineholm, to embrace the new benefit.

How to run a restaurant

These are tough times for restaurants. If the pandemic's rolling lockdowns were not bad enough, independent eateries now find themselves caught on a conveyor belt of crises: inflation, labour shortages and high rents. That is without mentioning the post-Covid agoraphobic “hermit consumer", who prefers to hunker down indoors than splash the cash on going out.

If the stats are to be believed 60% of restaurants fail in the first year, 80% after five. And yet despite the long odds many are still seduced by TV dramas like The Bear into turning their passion for cooking into a business. We hear from some of the best in the business for a steer on how to keep this labour of love alive.

David Reid speaks to leading restaurant critic Jay Rayner, culinary specialist Ashley Godfrey, top chef Joseph Otway and restaurant operations manager, Sam Wheatley as they lift the lid on the trade secrets they have accumulated from years on the restaurant front-line. The programme also asks what a world without independent restaurants would be like and what we as strapped consumers can do to save the flagging middle of the restaurant market from going under.

Are we close to a breakthrough for Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease which can lead to loss of mobility and vision. Almost 3 million people worldwide are affected by it. There is no cure, but attempts are being made to accelerate the healing process with treatments to restore what the disease has damaged.

At the same time, scientists have recently discovered a link between MS and a common virus that the majority of us carry in our bodies. It had been known for years that there was a link between Multiple Sclerosis and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). But then, a study finally proved the link.

Now, trials are underway on potential vaccines against EBV and scientists are hopeful that this could be a gateway to preventing MS.

This week on the Inquiry we are asking: Are we close to a breakthrough for Multiple Sclerosis?

Nigeria’s graduates vulnerable to kidnapping

Kidnapping is endemic in nearly all parts of Nigeria, as shown by the recent high profile mass abduction and release of nearly 300 schoolchildren.

And for young Nigerians who are taking part in the national youth service programme - NYSC - they are particularly vulnerable as they travel to their postings along the country's long rural roads.

Service is mandatory if you want to use your degree - but are the risks just too great now?

And what impact does it have on young people’s futures?

The Bluetooth story

In the 1990s, Bluetooth was invented in a lab in Lund, Sweden.

The technology is used today to wirelessly connect accessories such as mice, keyboards, speakers and headphones to desktops, laptops and mobile phones.

It’s named after Harald Bluetooth, a Viking king who was said to have blue teeth.

Sven Mattisson, one of the brains behind the technology, tells Gill Kearsley how the name Bluetooth came about following some drinks after a conference.

The Media Show: Fear, threats and intimidation

Have US diplomats been targeted by Russian sonic weaponry? Unexplained symptoms such as dizziness reported by personnel working around the globe have been dubbed "Havana Syndrome". Now a joint report between The Insider, Der Spiegel and CBS's 60 Minutes, alleges it’s the result of their brains being targeted by "directed energy" weapons operated by a secretive Russian military unit. The Media Show meets one of the journalists involved in the story. Moscow has denied the accusations. US officials have previously said it was unlikely a foreign power was to blame.

British counter terrorism officers are investigating the stabbing last Friday of an Iranian TV host outside his home in London. Iran International presenter Pouria Zeraati was hospitalised, before being discharged and moving to a safe place under the supervision of the Metropolitan Police. The channel says it provides independent coverage of events in Iran and that it has faced a "significant escalation in state-backed threats". Iran's charge d'affaires in the UK said "we deny any link" to the latest incident.

Investigating the J-pop sexual abuse scandal

For decades the Japanese entertainment industry ignored allegations that Johnny Kitagawa – a powerful music mogul who died in 2019 – had sexually abused young men and boys who he’d promised to turn into stars. Last year, the BBC aired a documentary by journalist Mobeen Azhar which shed new light on the accusations, and led to a reckoning across Japanese pop music. Azhar has been following up on the scandal and its aftermath in a new documentary. He joins Katya Adler and BBC presenter Mariko Oi, who grew up in Japan idolising J-pop stars.

Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg: 'We must be doing something right'

The Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has marked the alliance's 75th anniversary by saying "we must be doing something right". It has grown from 12 countries at its inception to 32. Its newest members, Sweden and Finland, abandoned their neutrality and joined the alliance as a result of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Addressing a ceremony in Brussels, Mr Stoltenberg said the alliance's success came from the interdependence of its North American and European members. The former and possibly future US president, Donald Trump, has repeatedly voiced scepticism about Nato.

Also in the programme: a drone attack on the Burmese capital, and some good news for the American man who received the world's first genetically-modified pig kidney.

The caste faultlines in Modi’s India

As India completes 10 years of being governed by the Hindu nationalist BJP, Divya Arya explores the divergent political and religious views of different castes in modern day India.

Despite government led programmes to increase job opportunities and reduced caste based discrimination, inequalities still exist particularly in smaller towns and villages.

In this episode, the BBC’s Divya Arya travels across the vast country, from small towns in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra to villages in Rajasthan and Gujarat, meeting Hindus from different castes.

She meets a young Brahman influencer who makes reels about her caste pride, and hears her anger at the government’s positive discrimination policies. Some of these guarantee sought after jobs for people from so called lower classes.
She also meets a man from the lower Dalit caste who has moved away from Hinduism to embrace Buddhism after being accused of killing cows, a sacred animals for Hindus.

Divya meets another Dalit man from the same area who has joined an organisation with close links to the ruling BJP. She asks why someone from the Dalit community would want to join a group that could hold discriminatory views about them.

As India heads towards a general election, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi looks likely to be elected for a third straight term, the varied experiences and motivations of Hindus reveal that age old divisions still exist in the country.

Israel military sacks senior officers after aid workers killed in Gaza

The Israeli military has sacked two senior officers after seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) aid workers were killed in a strike in Gaza on Monday. The inquiry into the incident says some workers survived initial air strikes, but were killed when a third car was hit.

Also in the programme: The Arsenal footballer who says he's ready to swap fighting for the league title for fighting for his country; and the scientists who say they've discovered a whole new process behind the damage asthma causes.

McDonald's buys back 225 outlets in Israel

Mcdonalds has announced its buying restaurants back, and bringing them in house - after the former franchise owner gave free meals to Israeli soldiers.

That decision sparked a Mcdonalds boycott in many other countries across the world.

Living with cancer

The world was shocked to hear the news that the Princess of Wales is being treated for cancer. In her video message, Catherine encouraged everyone facing the disease not to lose hope.

In this edition, hosted by James Reynolds, young women around the world talk candidly about their diagnosis; how it has affected them, their families and their approach to the future, particularly when their news came as young adults. “They found a lump in my neck and they biopsied the lump and I had stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” explained Michelle Fredman from Cape Town. “A huge shock, at any age but especially young; it’s not in your periphery at all.”

According to research from the World Health Organisation, one in five people will develop cancer in their lifetime. Catherine, who is 42, and has three children also spoke of the time it had taken to explain everything to her children so that they felt reassured.

This is something picked up in one of our conversations between two young mothers. Alejandra Solis, who’s 43 and living with breast cancer, explained how her son was able to make sense of it: “After a few days his friend came over to have a play and I overheard him saying my mummy has a poisonous rock in her boobie so they took the boobie out but now it’s bionic .”

How many people have ever existed?

Today there are over eight billion people on Earth. That’s an awe-inspiring figure… but how does it compare to the vast numbers who came before us? Listener Alpha wants to know how many people have ever existed, so CrowdScience sets out to do a historical headcount.

The Population Research Bureau in the USA estimated this number back in the 90s, and have been updating their calculations ever since. Demographer Toshiko Kaneda explains how their model works, the assumptions it makes – and the huge uncertainties around the number it comes out with.

We first need a date for when ‘humans’ first began, so Caroline travels to the Natural History Museum in London to meet human evolution expert Chris Stringer, and marvel at his collection of replica fossil skulls. Chris demonstrates how to distinguish our species, Homo sapiens, from other species like Neanderthals. When did these species first appear - and which of them count as human?

And once you know where to start the clock, how do you estimate the numbers of people alive at different points in history? For a population demographer like Walter Scheidel, it helps that some ancient civilisations kept detailed censuses, a few of which have survived to the present day. Caroline and Walter pour over one of these census fragments, and learn how to combine them with other archaeological clues to get some very rough numbers.

And finally: what does the future of our population look like? Poonam Muttreja from the Population Foundation of India discusses developments in the world’s most populous country, as well as the big demographic trends ahead for humanity.

Presenter: Caroline Steel
Producer: Phil Sansom
Additional Recording: Umaru Fofana
Editor: Cathy Edwards
Production Co-ordinator: Connor Morgans
Studio Manager: Sue Maillot

Featuring:
Toshiko Kaneda, Technical Director of Demographic Research, Population Research Bureau
Chris Stringer, Research Leader in Human Evolution, Natural History Museum London
Walter Scheidel, Professor of Classics and History, Stanford University
Poonam Muttreja, Executive Director, Population Foundation of India
