How can sports survive the coronavirus outbreak?

From the Olympics to the Indian Premier League, many major sporting events have had to be postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Every part of the sporting value chain is affected. In addition to suffering heavy financial losses, sportspeople are having to deal with an uncertain future.

So, what happens next? As some countries like Germany and South Korea try to partially resume the sporting calendar, what will be the new normal in the sporting world? Will major leagues be held to empty stadiums to follow social distancing norms? And how will masks and gloves, and strict new conditions, affect players’ performance on the field?

In this edition of WorklifeIndia, we discuss how can sports survive this pandemic.

Sweden's fishy submarine scare

The story of a scientist who helped solve a Cold War mystery involving flatulent fish and Soviet submarines. During the Cold War, foreign submarines infiltrated neutral Sweden's territorial waters. In response, the Swedish navy built up a secret database of tell-tale signs to detect the presence of lurking subs and conducted high profile submarine hunts. But the country's submarine scare continued even after the end of the Cold War. So in 1995, the Swedish government launched an investigation. Alex Last spoke to Swedish biologist, Dr Håkan Westerberg, who discovered that one of Sweden's key indicators for submarines, was not what it seemed.

Will the pandemic benefit mobsters?

The normal functioning of societies has been strained by the coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing curbs on our freedom of movement, commerce, trade and employment. So what impact has Covid-19 had on organised crime? In some communities, gangs have stepped in to provide food, medication and other emergency assistance to families struggling to make ends meet. Money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog, the Financial Action Task Force, says the pandemic has resulted in an increase in “fraud, cyber-crime, misdirection or exploitation of government funds or international financial assistance”. The United Nations says border closures and flight cancellations have disrupted distribution chains for illegal drugs such as heroin. History tells us criminals can thrive in a crisis. During the Great Depression in the US, the mob moved from bootlegging into gambling and prostitution and the Italian Mafia and Japanese Yakuza grew during the huge displacement of people after World War Two. So, will similar trends emerge in 2020? Ritula Shah and a panel of expert guests discuss how the coronavirus pandemic will change the workings of organised crime.

How to survive the digital age

Where did it all go wrong? The liberating promise of the internet and social media has recently been swamped by worries about privacy, misinformation and online radicalisation.

Now that doubts about our digital technologies are all over the news, what should we do about it?

Author and podcaster Douglas Rushkoff wants a new fight against “anti-human” technologies. He says that many recent technological developments – including the rise of social media – have alienated and isolated us.

Rushkoff is not a Luddite – in fact he’s an enthusiastic early adopter and long-time chronicler of the digital world. But in his new book Team Human, and his podcast of the same name, he argues for a critical look at how technology is affecting our brains and our lives.

What does he think is the way forward – and are people really listening?

Can we be sure that vaccines being developed now will still work in the future? Professor Guy Thwaites of the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Vietnam explains how the country has succeeding in keeping its cases so low. Professor David Heymann of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Professor Ngaire Woods, of the Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford University, tackle the question that people all around the world are wondering right now – how does a country safely emerge from lockdown without seeing a surge in cases?

And Professor Lisa Cooper of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and family doctor and Director of the Shuri Network, Dr Shera Chok, discuss why black and other ethnic minorities in the US and UK seem to be so disproportionately impacted by Covid 19.

Across every continent, people are trying to make sense of a new world – one that happens mostly behind closed doors and often alone. Alan Dein connects with seven individuals whose lives have shifted under the coronavirus pandemic as they nervously anticipate what will come next in an uncertain future.

In Tehran, Golnar, an Iranian who describes herself as ‘constant traveller’ is inside her apartment – all future trips postponed. Across the town is the hostel she set up with a friend. Forced to close in the city’s lockdown it is now serving a crucial role.

Dhaka is one of the most densely populated city’s on earth. As the pandemic takes hold, entrepreneur Fahad worries for the successful delivery business he has spent years building up and the future for his parents he shares a home with.

Not everyone is inside. In Greece, Ibrahim is homeless, sheltering in an abandoned building. His friend Mikki is self-isolating and cannot help him.

Plus stories from Amsterdam, Hong Kong and Sudan of isolation and expectation.

A coronavirus survivor, inspiration and friendship

Story of survival - Ken Dwan is an Olympian who competed at the 1968 and 72 games. But one of his toughest battles was in the last few weeks as he fought coronavirus, he tells us all about what it was like, the doctor who saved him and his hopes for the future.

We also hear from Olympic and World Cup Champion Brandi Chastain and former professional footballer and cancer survivor Sarah Hagen. The two have exchanged twitter messages after Sarah celebrated being 15 years cancer free. They have now become friends and also helped each others careers without even realising it.

This weekend the Bundesliga is back! After two months Germany's top-flight will become the first major football league in Europe to return to competition. Commentator Kevin Hitchard and former professional goalkeeper and current football board member Lutz Pfannensteil have been keeping audio diaries of how they have been preparing this week. Plus we go live to Germany to hear more about the safety protocols put in place to fight COVID-19.

Reverend Richard Cole joins us live to tell us how watching a new drama has inspired him to learn a new sport - Gaelic football.

Wuhan: The beginning of coronavirus Covid-19

It is week one of the coronavirus. In this critical time, decisions were made that set the entire trajectory of the crisis.

The program uses exclusive interviews with a cast of characters who were on the ground at the hospital in the very beginning. Their stories, combined with striking audio from the heat of the moment, brings listeners into the critical turning-points that defined the crisis to come.

Listeners will meet Dr Li, the head of the ICU in Wuhan and one of the first doctors to intubate a patient with Covid-19. As his hospital became overrun with patients, he and his colleagues debated just how contagious the virus was, what should be told to the general populace, and the proper government response.

But for Dr Li, it is a personal crisis as much as a public health crisis. In the weeks to come, he would become quarantined away from his wife of just three months, lose countless patients, and witness his colleague and mentor succumb to the virus.

At the same time, independent journalist Wei Ao sneaks into Wuhan to report in the hospital frontlines. While Dr Li is busy saving lives, Wei Ao undertakes significant personal risk to uncover why officials were unwilling to admit the extent of the crisis. If only they had listened three weeks earlier, then perhaps everything would have been different. Separated from his infant son in Beijing, Wei Ao starts to wonder if he will ever get a chance to see him again.

Through the eye-witness accounts of Dr Li, Wei Ao, and several other characters, listeners will be able to experience the beginnings of the crisis more intimately than ever before. These are the moments that would change China and our world forever.

She has renewed the Kuduro music by mixing her African roots with EDM, Bass, Dancehall, and Pop and her videos have been watched over 11 million times online. Silvastone is an genre-defying artist, producer and songwriter, raised in Freetown in Sierra Leone, and born to Ghanaian and Sierra Leonean parents. He describes his music as “a creative hybrid of African Beats and UK Street Sounds marinated in Global Melodies”. He’s worked with everybody from Popcaan and Davido to Damian Marley and Rita Ora. And finally, Viva Msimang who is a trombonist and singer of Chilean and South African heritage from the band Penya. She’s also worked with the likes of former Music Life host Sarthy Korwar, the Mercury-nominated Go Team, and Tanzanian musician Msafiri Zawose. And host Moelogo is an Afrobeat, R&B, and Hip Hop singer and songwriter who has collaborated with the likes of Giggs, Mostack, Tiggs Da Author, Mr Eazi, Adekunle Gold, Da Beatfreakz, Wretch 32, and Jonas Blue.

Together, they’ll be discussing how to stand out in today’s music scene, whether record labels help or hinder the creative process, and how their music connects with audiences.

Compassion

As coronavirus crisis unfolds, with its confusion and heartbreak, John McCarthy brings together reflections from people around the world. In this programme he hears stories of compassion. Most religions teach that compassion is what allows us to understand the suffering of others, but you need no faith to give or receive it. Compassion nurtures kindness and charity, both sorely needed now.

We hear from Bernard Gabbott, an Anglican minister in rural Australia. His community has suffered years of drought. The rains have only recently arrived. And now they face further hardship as farm machinery and seeds coming from China are delayed due to the virus. How does he balance compassion for his community with the needs of his young family?

The Sudan-raised novelist Leila Aboulela thought she would spend Ramadan this year with her mother and she looked forward particularly to the joy of breaking their fast together. Now her mother is instead completely isolated in Cairo.

Kindness to others might be at the heart of all faiths, but it is not always practised. How can faith guide the conversations that need to be had with families as we all face the prospect of illness? Are there words to ease the fear of not being able to say goodbye intimately to a loved one? How do we show compassion to children or young people who see this as injustice and maybe even a sign that God has abandoned them?
As we face the prospect of a long period of lockdown, could nurturing compassion mean the world emerges as a kinder place?

Paris begins its re-opening

Stories from France, South Africa, Spain, and Australia

In Paris, the public is emerging from lockdown into the early summer sunshine. But the economic future is grey and bleak despite the substantial support package set up by the Macron government. Lucy Williamson wanders down the streets of Paris to hear how shopkeepers and customers are adjusting as they emerge from the lockdown.

In South Africa, we hear the story of two different lockdowns: life is comfortable for Johannesburg’s affluent community of Linksfield Ridge, meanwhile army patrols ensure residents of townships remain firmly inside their shacks. Katie Arnold spent time with a South African film star who is highlighting the inequality by squatting in a mansion in Linksfield Ridge.

In Spain, the Roma people are being blamed for the spread of Coronavirus, receiving threats from neighbours and the subject of conspiracy theories on social media. Guy Hedgecoe reports on how the pandemic may leave them even more marginalised from mainstream society.

And in Australia –the appearance of tea bags without tags has caused a stir in supermarkets. Steve Evans of The Canberra Times follows the journey of a tea bag – from Asia to Europe, and back down under - and tells the story of how the pandemic has affected the global supply chain.
