As India unlocks, how will it protect its workers’ rights?

India is gradually unlocking its economy after more than two months of shutdown to contain the coronavirus outbreak, but many businesses and factories are facing a shortage of labour. That’s because when the factories closed down, millions of migrant workers, left to fend for themselves, returned to their native places. They have little to do there.

On top of that, several states have diluted labour protection laws, saying it would attract investment and create more jobs. But critics say this would make India’s workers - among the lowest wage earners in the world - more vulnerable to exploitation.

So, in this edition of WorklifeIndia, we discuss how can India protect its workers. Will diluting labour laws revamp the economy or create a labour crisis?

The portable defibrillator

In the 1960s, doctors in Northern Ireland launched the world’s first mobile coronary emergency service using a new invention – the portable defibrillator. The defibrillators – which initially worked off ambulance car batteries - saved dozens of heart attack victims every year. Modern versions are now commonly seen and used in places like offices and shopping malls. The man behind the portable defibrillator was Belfast hospital doctor Frank Pantridge. Simon Watts tells his story using the BBC Northern Ireland archives.

What should black Americans do next?

The death of the African-American man, George Floyd, in police custody - and the subsequent protests and riots - will look familiar to anyone who’s followed American history. This week also marked the 99th anniversary of an incident known as the ‘Tulsa Race Massacre’, in which a white mob killed hundreds of black people in a part of the Oklahoma city referred to as the ‘Black Wall Street’. Decades later, Congress passed civil rights legislation, and in 2008 the United States elected its first black president - superficially, big steps. But since then there has been a wave of police killings of young black men. The anger expressed on the streets of more than 140 US cities this week demonstrates not enough has changed. Ritula Shah is joined by a cross-generational panel of black activists and academics to assess the way forward. Have the tactics used to change minds and laws after previous deaths in police custody had any success? What are the structural obstacles to black progress and how can they be dismantled? Given all the anger and false dawns, what should black Americans do next?

Are Instagrammers ruining nature?

A beautiful shot in the wild can get thousands of likes – but some influencers are going too far.
We speak to a nature lover who’s had enough. He says that disrespect of nature has risen alongside the popularity of social media. So he’s fighting fire with fire, with an Instagram account called Public Lands Hate You.
His more than 70,000 followers and fans – and a host of similar accounts – call out influencers who damage national parks and break the rules of open spaces.
Some Instagrammers are getting the message, and welcome the intervention. But Public Lands Hate You also has its fair share of opponents, with some saying it incites hate.

Contact theory

How do you stop different groups hating each other? Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland. Palestinians and Jews in the Middle East. Muslims and Hindus in India. Is building walls between them the solution? According to Miles Hewstone, of Oxford University, what’s really needed is contact – the more you are exposed to people in another group, the less you distrust and fear them.

Black girls don't swim

Seren Jones swam competitively for 13 years in the UK and in the US collegiate system. But in that time she only ever saw six other black girls in the pool. Why so few? A survey published by the University of Memphis and USA Swimming found that black respondents were significantly more concerned about getting their hair wet, and about the negative impact of chemicals on their appearances, than white respondents.

Seren explores whether maintaining ‘good’ hair really is the leading factor behind why black women do not take part in competitive swimming. And what, if anything, is being done about it?

Black Music in Europe: 1920-1930

Clarke Peters explores the sounds of Zonophone records, a pioneering label that recorded a huge amount of early African popular music. Many of these discs were made in London for export to West Africa, including several Nigerian hymns recorded in 1922 by Fela Kuti's grandfather. The programme also includes the sounds of African-American jazz in 1920s Paris, especially the work of Josephine Baker, the world's first black superstar.

Much of the music in this series is drawn from Black Europe, a vast boxset issued by Bear Family Records and documenting the sounds of the era.

'Choosing to be neutral is the knee on my neck' - Natasha Cloud

Washington Mystics player Natasha Cloud believes the time for silence is over following the death of George Floyd. Cloud says "I fear for my life simply because of the colour of my skin" and that she knows she will suffer racism at some point every day. Cloud adds "that fear is there for every single black American" and says one of her biggest fears is bringing a black child into the world. Cloud says if what happened to George Floyd doesn't "wake you up" it "says a lot about who you are as a human being".

"What if I was George Floyd?" - This week more than a dozen of the NFL's top players - including MVP Patrick Mahomes - released a video telling the league that they won't be silenced. It came after the NFL was criticised for it's earlier statement following the death of George Floyd. We speak to former New York Giants player Jason Bell about how the NFL have reacted this week and the fall-out between Saints team-mates Drew Brees and Malcolm Jenkins over Brees comments about kneeling during the national anthem.

Male body image in Sport - Luke Chadwick is a former Manchester United player and Toby Penty is England's Badminton number one. Luke talks about how damaging he found negative media attention around his appearance when he was a young player at United and Toby shares how alopecia has affected his confidence. Luke wants to promote the message that it's healthy to talk and they speak to each other about how their experiences have shaped them.

"Walking out to bat in a test match, where you have nobody watching, I found it incredibly difficult" - Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen tells us it's "great" that cricket is coming back and admits they have to play behind closed doors but says he found it hard to perform in front of sparse crowds when he was a player. Pietersen is taking part in an online charity bike race on Sunday to raise money for the NHS. Four time Tour de France champion Chris Froome is the favourite and will start after everyone else. Pietersen jokes they can start at the same time and he'd still be confident of beating Froome.

And this week's Sporting Witness goes back to the Rio Olympics of 2016, when fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad became the first Muslim-American to compete while wearing a hijab.

Abortion under lockdown

Abortion clinics in Texas were forced to close their doors during the coronavirus lockdown. For several weeks, women wanting abortions could not get them. So what happened, and how did medical staff help?

To find out Philippa Thomas, who in 2018 travelled across Texas for a major BBC World Service series on abortion, catches up with some of the people, and places, she got to know then.

She’ll speak to the staff working in the clinics forced to close their doors. She’ll hear from the protesters opposed to abortion who, for the first time in many years, didn’t need to protest. How did the closure affect them, and how are they coping with clinics re-opening?

And, with a major Supreme Court decision on access to abortion due this summer, she’ll hear from the activists concerned that this period, with abortion unavailable for thousands of Texan women, could be a harbinger of the future.

Turning fear into excitement with Austra and Dan Deacon

Prepare to be inspired by this week as Canadian singer Katie Stelmanis, AKA Austra, sits down with Dan Deacon, Cosmo Sheldrake and Dry Cleaning’s Florence Shaw.

Dan Deacon is a singer-songwriter and film score composer from Baltimore, USA, who is known for his exhilarating live shows and is described by his record label Domino as an "alchemist of electro-acoustic recording tools". He released his latest record Mystic Familiar in January 2020, his first to display his natural singing voice.

Another artist known to surprise his audiences is Cosmo Sheldrake, who often brings sounds from the natural world into his records and live performances. A multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer and songwriter, Cosmo released his debut album in 2018, and his compositions have featured in theatre, film, and London's Natural History Museum.

They’re joined by Florence Shaw, who is a visual artist and university lecturer as well as being the lead vocalist and lyricist for London-based band Dry Cleaning. Her sources of lyrical inspiration include social anxiety, YouTube comments and even takeaway menus.

Reflections on Faith in a Global Crisis

Prayer

A man finds himself by chance in the country he fled as a political prisoner as the virus spreads and he is trapped. An atheist looking for peace in lockdown. A writer looking for a way to stay united with her community. Very different people, with very different beliefs, united in prayer.

In a special Heart and Soul series for the BBC World Service, amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, the journalist John McCarthy brings together reflections from people of faith around the world. In this fifth programme, John hears how people are reaching for prayer at this time - in an age old response to such a crisis. Prayer can be a repeated phrase, a daily ritual, a casual conversation or a cry for help and it is not just people of conventional faith who are doing it.

Sanderson Jones does not believe in God, but the stand-up comedian says he has found something akin to prayer whilst pushing his son in a buggy in his allotted daily exercise. Mario Aguilar is a hermit who lives a life of quiet contemplation. But he was on a short visit in his native Chile when lockdown began. Order, discipline and simple prayer have carried him through what he admits has been a tough time.

As the world faces the prospect of many months of lockdown we hear how prayer and meditation can bring comfort and calm.

The death of George Floyd has provoked a global response and galvanised opinion. We bring together African Americans to discuss race and share experiences of racism in the US. We hear from people who have sought justice from police aggression, from those attempting reconciliation and from police officers themselves. What changes do they want to see to move America in the right direction?

We hear from Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner, who died in 2014 under similar circumstances to George Floyd, and whose dying words “I can’t breathe” became a rallying cry for protests against police brutality. We also speak to Curtis Hayes Jr, whose passionate exchange with two other black men was viewed millions of times this week, and to Tonya Trumbo, the woman who hugged a police officer at a protest in Louisville, Kentucky. In my present isolation

Six authors on different continents, write across distances, to convey thoughts and preoccupations, during their present isolation.

While the world is held in the grip of this pandemic, there's nowhere to go, no escape, all the exterior space has been taken. The only refuge is inside, a home, a room.. in the interior of the psyche, surfing the seas and landscapes of the mind.

In this moment of social distancing and reliance on social media, a group of writers are reverting to an earlier form of communication – to letter writing. They’ve agreed to create a conversation about their thoughts at this strange moment, via chain letter moving from one continent to the next.. rapidly, around the world – just as the virus itself is doing.

Dava Sobel is in Long Island, New York, to Thomas Lynch in Michigan also in the US; Okwiri Oduor is in Bavaria, Germany she hands on to Claire Louis Bennett who writes from Galway, in Ireland. Akash Kapur is locked down in Auroville in India and William Fiennes is near Oxford in England.

Being African-American in Minnesota

Pascale Harter introduces analysis, reportage and personal reflections from correspondents around the world.

The killing of African-American George Floyd by a white policeman in Minnesota led to both peaceful demonstrations and violence across the United States. Emma Sapong is a journalist who lives in Minnesota. As an African-American woman she has had direct experience of the gaping hole between the lives of black residents and their white counterparts.

China was the first country to enforce a lockdown as a result of the coronavirus in late January. At the time many outsiders saw it as a draconian measure, only possible in a country with an authoritarian government. But five months on and it’s still reality for many across the world. China has now eased many of its pandemic-related restrictions and Stephen McDonell detects a new mood of optimism in the country.

Covid-19 is only spreading slowly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but measures to curb the spread, such as closing borders, have led food prices to shoot up. In the eastern city of Goma, some people are more afraid of starving to death than of catching the disease. Others are particularly wary of foreigners who they fear might be carrying the virus, as Olivia Acland reports.

And as Spain looks to restart its tourism industry some resorts, like Torremolinos in the south, are turning to the past for inspiration. In the 1960s, it rivalled France’s St Tropez with visitors ranging from royals to world leaders and Hollywood stars. Oliver Smith finds out more about Torremolinos’ forgotten glamour.

I can't breathe

The homicide of George Floyd, an unarmed man, while he was in police custody has sparked demonstrations and protests in the US and across the globe. From London and Berlin to Australia and the Netherlands, thousands marched in solidarity after a video showed a white police officer kneeling on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes before he died. The incident touched off outrage in the United States, amid a polarizing presidential campaign and the coronavirus pandemic that has thrown millions out of work. Darnella Wade, an organizer for Black Lives Matter in St. Paul, Minnesota, hopes that this becomes a galvanizing moment for lasting change.

Also, black Americans once largely fought alone against police brutality, but as Somali American kids grew up in the same environment, they began to join Black Lives Matter; Dr. Michelle Morse, a professor of medicine at Harvard University explains why the racism in public health is so harmful in the age of Covid-19; America's adversaries are using global attention on the George Floyd protests as anti-US propaganda; and America’s foreign adversaries are also using social media to deepen division in the US.

SUN 05:32 The Cultural Frontline (w3cszj89)
Black Lives Matter in art and protest

The Cultural Frontline explores how America’s artists and cultural voices are responding to the death of George Floyd and the protests that have followed.

Telling the stories of black life that don't get told anywhere else. That’s the mission of The Nod a hugely popular American podcast presented by Brittany Luse and Eric Eddings. Tina Daheley speaks to Brittany and Eric about the death of George Floyd and confronting the pain felt by black Americans.

It’s not just in the United States where the Black Lives Matter movement has been staging protests. In Toronto, Canada the artist and activist Ravyn Wingz shares their experience on taking a stand against white supremacy and using performance as a means of expression and escapism.

What is like to be a photojournalist caught on the front line of protest? The Washington Post Magazine’s photographers Robert Miller and Marvin Joseph talk about the framing of the global protest movement, Black Lives Matter and the power of images to tell stories of black lives in America.

When Michelle Obama first posted about the tragic death of George Floyd, she chose to post her tribute alongside a portrait of George by LA-based artist Nikkolas Smith. The post and painting have since gone viral with over one million likes on Instagram. We speak to Nikkolas about his work and why he paints portraits of victims of police brutality.

Speed

We live in a world where going fast – and faster – is an everyday fact of life. Where fast cars, fast boats and fast athletes command our attention.
In theme parks we queue for the most fastest, most exciting rides. But why do we find speed so thrilling?

Caz Graham meets people who risk their lives to set world speed records, the boss of a Formula One race team, and a sports psychologist to ask – why are we so taken with speed?

What motivates people like Formula 1 or speed boat drivers to stretch themselves to the limits of what might be dangerous? Do we like scaring ourselves?

Caz visits the annual Coniston Power Boat Records Week in the English Lake District to meet the teenager who hopes to break a world water speed record and she hears of the risks that going at speed on water can entail. She hears from a ‘thrill engineer’ about why people like to ride roller-coasters. From the psychologist who worked with the UK’s Olympic cycling team in 2016, Caz hears what it takes psychologically to be able to want to go faster and faster. And from the man in charge of Renault’s Formula One team she discovers the engineering effort that goes into designing fast cars – and what it takes to be the driver of such cars as they race around high speed tracks.

Keep your distance

What difference does a metre make? The World Health Organisation recommends that people keep at least 1 metre apart from each other to stop the spread of Covid-19, but different countries have adopted different standards.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends staying six feet apart - that’s just short of 2 metres; in the UK, the rule is 2 metres.

But all this has a big impact on the way businesses and societies get back to work. Tim Harford investigates the economic costs and conundrums of keeping our distance in a post-lockdown world.

How can we avoid infection spreading again, while getting on with life?

Killer Mike - The rapper turned speech maker

Riots and protests have broken out in cities across the USA following the death of George Floyd after his arrest by white police officers in Minneapolis. But one black American’s impassioned plea for calm has gone viral in the midst of the violence. Atlanta-based rapper Killer Mike made an impromptu speech calling on his fellow citizens not to burn their city but to organise and mobilise and to use their votes to bring about change. Mark Coles has been speaking to people who know Killer Mike well, and finding out more about his past, his music and his life in Atlanta.

Coronavirus Crisis: Our Society - Changing the Way We Live?

How has coronavirus changed the way we live our lives and the values we share? Will covid 19 help society change and build a better future. What difference has it made to our attitudes socially, politically and culturally. Is there a deeper sense of community – or do some feel forgotten and left behind. Some hope we are heading for a greener planet, others feel it will be a lonelier one.

Has the crisis made us more generous?

Have you noticed how there have been so many acts of kindness during the pandemic, especially when it comes to food? Graihagh Jackson hears how millions were raised in a matter of days to feed healthcare workers and how people have rallied to support food banks in the past few months. But what is behind this outpouring of generosity? And crucially, can it last? This week we delve into the psychology of why so many have felt compelled to help and ask whether COVID-19 could make us more generous.

Babylon, city of wonders

With its Hanging Gardens and huge walls, Babylon was celebrated as one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world; to the Israelites enslaved there under Nebuchadnezzar, it was a lasting emblem of oppression and depravity, where they wept as they remembered Zion. It is only in the last two hundred years that Babylon's fuller history has been unearthed, both the remains of its buildings and a huge number of clay tablets covered in writing, revealing a complex world that created epic stories, powerful people and an understanding of science and the stars, and it was their 60 based numbering system that led to our 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour. It has been called a cradle of civilisation.

Bridget Kendall explores the reputation of Babylon and its contribution to the world with four experts: Frances Reynolds, Shillito Fellow in Assyriology at the Oriental Institute, University of Oxford; Grant Frame, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Pennsylvania and Curator of the Babylonian Section of Penn Museum; Daniel Schwemer, Chair of Ancient Oriental Studies at the University of Würzburg; and Jaafar Jotheri, Assistant Professor in Geoarchaeology at the University of Al-Qadisiyah, Iraq.

Jamaica: A Brother’s Story

Steve Walker investigates the murder of his brother Delroy, a child of the Windrush generation. He came to Britain from Jamaica in the 1960s and built a new life here - but always yearned for the pleasures of home. He eventually got the money together to build a dream home, but soon after returning, he was brutally killed.

Steve, a BBC technical operator, and BBC journalist Nesta McGregor travel to Jamaica, which has one of the highest murder rates in the world. They discover that some believe that criminals target “returnees”, who are viewed with envy as wealthy foreigners. Yet talking to a group of British-Jamaicans who have returned to the island in retirement, he finds they regard Jamaica as home. Steve and Nesta’s journey raises questions about migration, identity and belonging.

Would you risk your life to save another?

Have you ever broken up a fight? Or pushed someone out the way of an oncoming vehicle, only to be hit by it yourself? Most of us probably haven’t taken as many risks as listener Alix, who has put herself in peril to save strangers on several occasions, and she wants Crowdscience to investigate why. At a time when medical professionals have to weigh up the personal dangers of working on the frontline of the Coronavirus crisis, it’s a particularly timely question. Marnie Chesterton finds out why it’s a good thing that children push the boundaries of what’s safe during playtime, because it makes them less anxious adults. And she questions the existence of the so-called bystander effect, discovering how evolution has ensured we’re a much braver species than we sometimes give ourselves credit for. But she hears from some social scientists who say there’s no such thing as a ‘hero’, however likely they are to intervene to help others.

Creating female superheroes

Two women making comic books more diverse speak to Kim Chakanetsa about working in a male-dominated industry and why they're so keen to represent women and minorities in comic books.

G. Willow Wilson is a novelist and comic writer from the USA. She's best known for relaunching MS Marvel, starring Kamala Khan, a 16 year old Muslim female superhero, who takes over the mantle after Carol Danvers becomes Captain Marvel. Willow has fought back against claims that diverse characters damage comic book sales and continues to represent Muslim and female characters in her work.

Nicola Scott is an Australian comic book artist who has illustrated several well known female superheroes, including Wonder Woman and Birds of Prey featuring Harley Quinn, which will be adapted for film in 2020. She also co-created the Black Magick series, about young witches. She says women working on comics add layers of humanity and quality to female characters that men might miss.

Toothbrush

What is the most personal item you own - one you don’t want anyone else using?

For Katy Brand it’s her toothbrush. So how did the toothbrush become one of life’s essentials?

With the help of resident public historian of Horrible Histories fame, Greg Jenner, Katy goes back to ancient times, when the toothbrush was merely a stick. But the brush, as we know it, only came into being much later when a convict spied a broom in his cell and had a bright idea.

But how has ingenuity and innovation shaped the toothbrush and ensured its place in our lives? And given most are plastic, how environmentally friendly is the toothbrush’s legacy?

Featuring designer and toothbrush collector, Sophie Thomas, and advocate for clean teeth, Peter Dyer, Chair of Hospital Dentists at the British Dental Association.

Julie Baines: The making of a movie, part two

Starring Russell Brand and Matthew Goode – and featuring Michael Caine – the film Four Kids and It is a culmination of 8 years hard graft by award-winning British independent film producer Julie Baines.

Never afraid to take risks to achieve her cinematic dreams this film demands more of her talent, insight and sheer hard work than ever before.

Based on Jacqueline Wilson’s best-selling novel, itself inspired by the E Nesbitt classic 5 Children and It, the story requires an array of sophisticated special effects including flying, dare devil rock climbing and the staging of a pop concert at the O2 in London.

After two failed attempts to finance the film, it was finally given the go ahead and shot in Ireland in the summer of 2018. It’s a wrap, the film is in the can – but this is where our story starts.

Will the film be completed on time avoiding hefty financial penalties? Will the special effects make the grade, without access to the type of budget Hollywood studios can command? And finally, how well will it sell in a very competitive marketplace in a bid to get it in front of the family audiences it was made for?

Hilary Dunn follows British independent film producer Julie Baines for a period of nearly two years, on a revealing journey into the little known art – and science – of post-production.

Presented and Produced by Hilary Dunn for the BBC World Service

My quarantine kitchen

As the spread of Covid-19 confines millions of us to our homes, we go behind closed doors to hear how people all over the world are using food and cooking to help them through the crisis.

Graihagh Jackson speaks to an artist from Iran who has found inspiration in stories of shared recipes, a sense of healing in her own cooking, and hope for a more peaceful future. A young lawyer from Italy tells us that lockdown meals have helped her reconnect with her family, but that her mother’s exuberance in the kitchen has posed a problem for her waistline. And an Azerbaijani living alone in Barcelona explains why she set up virtual tapas parties to replace the physical ones she’d enjoyed with other expats before the pandemic.

We also hear listeners’ quarantine cooking stories: a Sri Lankan who now lives in Australia tells us how the crisis has reminded him of growing up amid civil war and driven him to reconnect with the food and culture of his birthplace; and a newlywed from Vatican City tells us how discovering a passion for cooking has helped him express his love for his new wife, and that the kitchen has made him a better person.

Let us know what you think about the show, or share your own quarantine cooking stories by emailing thefoodchain@bbc.co.uk

Joan of Arc: making a martyr

Born more than six hundred years ago, Joan of Arc is regarded as a French national heroine – a peasant girl who, inspired by saintly visions, battled to break the Siege of Orléans and see Charles VII finally crowned King of France in a grand cathedral. But in 1431, she was burned at the stake.

Bridget Kendall and guests discuss the life and death of this medieval teenage celebrity who helped to shape the course of the Hundred Years War with England. They also reflect on her status as an enduring symbol in popular culture through the ages, including on the stage and the big screen.
Bridget is joined by film scholar Robin Blaetz, and historians Juliet Barker, Xavier Helary and Daniel Hobbins.

Rulon Gardner - Wrestling Hero

At the 2000 Olympics, American Rulon Gardner pulled off the greatest shock in the history of modern Greco-Roman wrestling when he beat the Russian Aleksander Karelin. Karelin had not been defeated for 13 years and had already prepared a party to celebrate his latest gold medal. The win made Gardner a hero in America and is credited with sparking a boom in the popularity of his sport. He talks to Ashley Byrne. The programme is a Made-in-Manchester Production.
