As India unlocks, how will it protect its workers’ rights?

India is gradually unlocking its economy after more than two months of shutdown to contain the coronavirus outbreak, but many businesses and factories are facing a shortage of labour. That’s because when the factories closed down, millions of migrant workers, left to fend for themselves, returned to their native places. They have little to do there.

On top of that, several states have diluted labour protection laws, saying it would attract investment and create more jobs. But critics say this would make India’s workers - among the lowest wage earners in the world - more vulnerable to exploitation.

So, in this edition of WorklifeIndia, we discuss how can India protect its workers. Will diluting labour laws revamp the economy or create a labour crisis?

The portable defibrillator

In the 1960s, doctors in Northern Ireland launched the world’s first mobile coronary emergency service using a new invention – the portable defibrillator. The defibrillators – which initially worked off ambulance car batteries - saved dozens of heart attack victims every year. Modern versions are now commonly seen and used in places like offices and shopping malls. The man behind the portable defibrillator was Belfast hospital doctor Frank Pantridge. Simon Watts tells his story using the BBC Northern Ireland archives.

What should black Americans do next?

The death of the African-American man, George Floyd, in police custody - and the subsequent protests and riots - will look familiar to anyone who’s followed American history. This week also marked the 99th anniversary of an incident known as the ‘Tulsa Race Massacre’, in which a white mob killed hundreds of black people in a part of the Oklahoma city referred to as the ‘Black Wall Street’. Decades later, Congress passed civil rights legislation, and in 2008 the United States elected its first black president - superficially, big steps. But since then there has been a wave of police killings of young black men. The anger expressed on the streets of more than 140 US cities this week demonstrates not enough has changed. Ritula Shah is joined by a cross-generational panel of black activists and academics to assess the way forward. Have the tactics used to change minds and laws after previous deaths in police custody had any success? What are the structural obstacles to black progress and how can they be dismantled? Given all the anger and false dawns, what should black Americans do next?

Are Instagrammers ruining nature?

A beautiful shot in the wild can get thousands of likes – but some influencers are going too far.
We speak to a nature lover who’s had enough. He says that disrespect of nature has risen alongside the popularity of social media. So he’s fighting fire with fire, with an Instagram account called Public Lands Hate You.
His more than 70,000 followers and fans – and a host of similar accounts – call out influencers who damage national parks and break the rules of open spaces.
Some Instagrammers are getting the message, and welcome the intervention. But Public Lands Hate You also has its fair share of opponents, with some saying it incites hate.

Black girls don't swim

Seren Jones swam competitively for 13 years in the UK and in the US collegiate system. But in that time she only ever saw six other black girls in the pool. Why so few? A survey published by the University of Memphis and USA Swimming found that black respondents were significantly more concerned about getting their hair wet, and about the negative impact of chemicals on their appearances, than white respondents.

Seren explores whether maintaining ‘good’ hair really is the leading factor behind why black women do not take part in competitive swimming. And what, if anything, is being done about it?

Black Music in Europe

Black Music in Europe: 1920-1930

Clarke Peters explores the sounds of Zonophone records, a pioneering label that recorded a huge amount of early African popular music. Many of these discs were made in London for export to West Africa, including several Nigerian hymns recorded in 1922 by Fela Kuti's grandfather. The programme also includes the sounds of African-American jazz in 1920s Paris, especially the work of Josephine Baker, the world's first black superstar.

Much of the music in this series is drawn from Black Europe, a vast boxset issued by Bear Family Records and documenting the sounds of the era.

'Choosing to be neutral is the knee on my neck' - Natasha Cloud

Washington Mystics player Natasha Cloud believes the time for silence is over following the death of George Floyd. Cloud says "I fear for my life simply because of the colour of my skin" and that she knows she will suffer racism at some point every day. Cloud adds "that fear is there for every single black American" and says one of her biggest fears is bringing a black child into the world. Cloud says if what happened to George Floyd doesn't "wake you up" it "says a lot about who you are as a human being".

"What if I was George Floyd?" - This week more than a dozen of the NFL's top players - including MVP Patrick Mahomes - released a video telling the league that they won't be silenced. It came after the NFL was criticised for it's earlier statement following the death of George Floyd. We speak to former New York Giants player Jason Bell about how the NFL have reacted this week and the fall-out between Saints team-mates Drew Brees and Malcolm Jenkins over Brees comments about kneeling during the national anthem.

Male body image in Sport - Luke Chadwick is a former Manchester United player and Toby Penty is England's Badminton number one. Luke talks about how damaging he found negative media attention around his appearance when he was a young player at United and Toby shares how alopecia has affected his confidence. Luke wants to promote the message that it's healthy to talk and they speak to each other about how their experiences have shaped them.

"Walking out to bat in a test match, where you have nobody watching, I found it incredibly difficult" - Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen tells us it's "great" that cricket is coming back and admits they have to play behind closed doors but says he found it hard to perform in front of sparse crowds when he was a player. Pietersen is taking part in an online charity bike race on Sunday to raise money for the NHS. Four time Tour de France champion Chris Froome is the favourite and will start after everyone else. Pietersen jokes they can start at the same time and he'd still be confident of beating Froome.

And this week's Sporting Witness goes back to the Rio Olympics of 2016, when fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad became the first Muslim-American to compete while wearing a hijab.

Abortion under lockdown

Abortion clinics in Texas were forced to close their doors during the coronavirus lockdown. For several weeks, women wanting abortions could not get them. So what happened, and how did medical staff help?

To find out Philippa Thomas, who in 2018 travelled across Texas for a major BBC World Service series on abortion, catches up with some of the people, and places, she got to know then.

She’ll speak to the staff working in the clinics forced to close their doors. She’ll hear from the protesters opposed to abortion who, for the first time in many years, didn’t need to protest. How did the closure affect them, and how are they coping with clinics re-opening?

And, with a major Supreme Court decision on access to abortion due this summer, she’ll hear from the activists concerned that this period, with abortion unavailable for thousands of Texan women, could be a harbinger of the future.

Turning fear into excitement with Austra and Dan Deacon

Prepare to be inspired by this week as Canadian singer Katie Stelmanis, AKA Austra, sits down with Dan Deacon, Cosmo Sheldrake and Dry Cleaning’s Florence Shaw.

Dan Deacon is a singer-songwriter and film score composer from Baltimore, USA, who is known for his exhilarating live shows and is described by his record label Domino as an "alchemist of electro-acoustic recording tools". He released his latest record Mystic Familiar in January 2020, his first to display his natural singing voice.

Another artist known to surprise his audiences is Cosmo Sheldrake, who often brings sounds from the natural world into his records and live performances. A multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer and songwriter, Cosmo released his debut album in 2018, and his compositions have featured in theatre, film, and London's Natural History Museum.

They’re joined by Florence Shaw, who is a visual artist and university lecturer as well as being the lead vocalist and lyricist for London-based band Dry Cleaning. Her sources of lyrical inspiration include social anxiety, YouTube comments and even takeaway menus.

They’ll be discussing the odd places they find inspiration, how an album’s format can impact the music itself, and overcoming anxiety.

Reflections on Faith in a Global Crisis

Prayer

A man finds himself by chance in the country he fled as a political prisoner as the virus spreads and he is trapped. An atheist looking for peace in lockdown. A writer looking for a way to stay united with her community. Very different people, with very different beliefs, united in prayer.

In a special Heart and Soul series for the BBC World Service, amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, the journalist John McCarthy brings together reflections from people of faith around the world. In this fifth programme, John hears how people are reaching for prayer at this time - in an age old response to such a crisis. Prayer can be a repeated phrase, a daily ritual, a casual conversation or a cry for help and it is not just people of conventional faith who are doing it.

Sanderson Jones does not believe in God, but the stand-up comedian says he has found something akin to prayer whilst pushing his son in a buggy in his allotted daily exercise. Mario Aguilar is a hermit who lives a life of quiet contemplation. But he was on a short visit in his native Chile when lockdown began. Order, discipline and simple prayer have carried him through what he admits has been a tough time.

As the world faces the prospect of many months of lockdown we hear how prayer and meditation can bring comfort and calm.

The death of George Floyd has provoked a global response and galvanised opinion. We bring together African Americans to discuss race and share experiences of racism in the US. In my present isolation

Six authors on different continents, write across distances, to convey thoughts and preoccupations, during their present isolation.

While the world is held in the grip of this pandemic, there's nowhere to go, no escape, all the exterior space has been taken. The only refuge is inside, a home, a room.. in the interior of the psyche, surfing the seas and landscapes of the mind.

In this moment of social distancing and reliance on social media, a group of writers are reverting to an earlier form of communication – to letter writing. They’ve agreed to create a conversation about their thoughts at this strange moment, via chain letter moving from one continent to the next.. rapidly, around the world – just as the virus itself is doing.

Dava Sobel is in Long Island, New York, to Thomas Lynch in Michigan also in the US; Okwiri Oduor is in Bavaria, Germany she hands on to Claire Louis Bennett who writes from Galway, in Ireland. Akash Kapur is locked down in Auroville in India and William Fiennes is near Oxford in England.

Being African-American in Minnesota

Pascale Harter introduces analysis, reportage and personal reflections from correspondents around the world.

The killing of African-American George Floyd by a white policeman in Minnesota led to both peaceful demonstrations and violence across the United States. Emma Sapong is a journalist who lives in Minnesota. As an African-American woman she has had direct experience of the gaping hole between the lives of black residents and their white counterparts.

China was the first country to enforce a lockdown as a result of the coronavirus in late January. At the time many outsiders saw it as a draconian measure, only possible in a country with an authoritarian government. But five months on and it’s still reality for many across the world. China has now eased many of its pandemic-related restrictions and Stephen McDonell detects a new mood of optimism in the country.

Covid-19 is only spreading slowly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but measures to curb the spread, such as closing borders, have led food prices to shoot up. In the eastern city of Goma, some people are more afraid of starving to death than of catching the disease. Others are particularly wary of foreigners who they fear might be carrying the virus, as Olivia Acland reports.

And as Spain looks to restart its tourism industry some resorts, like Torremolinos in the south, are turning to the past for inspiration. In the 1960s, it rivalled France’s St Tropez with visitors ranging from royals to world leaders and Hollywood stars. Oliver Smith finds out more about Torremolinos’ forgotten glamour.

I can't breathe

The homicide of George Floyd, an unarmed man, while he was in police custody has sparked demonstrations and protests in the US and across the globe. From London and Berlin to Australia and the Netherlands, thousands marched in solidarity after a video showed a white police officer kneeling on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes before he died. The incident touched off outrage in the United States, amid a polarizing presidential campaign and the coronavirus pandemic that has thrown millions out of work. Darnella Wade, an organizer for Black Lives Matter in St. Paul, Minnesota, hopes that this becomes a galvanizing moment for lasting change.
