How will airlines survive the coronavirus pandemic?

Airlines, airports and ground-handling firms across the globe are in survival mode, trying to keep afloat. But the aviation industry, almost entirely grounded for months due to the coronavirus pandemic, is now taking tentative steps to start flying again.

In India too, domestic flights have resumed amid easing lockdown restrictions. New rules are in place for flyers. Thermal body checks are being conducted and wearing of masks is now mandatory for all flyers.

Restarting domestic flights has also had its share of confusion and chaos. Long queues have been seen at the airports, dozens of flights cancelled at the last minute and many passengers left high and dry.

So, as planes take to the skies again, how will the pandemic impact the way people fly? And how will the airlines survive?

In this edition of WorklifeIndia, we discuss how the aviation industry is gearing up for its future flight plan.

The privatisation of space travel

On Saturday a private company will attempt to deliver astronauts into orbit for the first time - with the launch of the SpaceX Crew Dragon mission to the International Space Station. Other big space projects planned by private companies include tourism, commercial space stations, a return to the Moon, habitats on Mars and even the mining of asteroids. National space agencies may partner with the private sector to reduce short-term costs and spread risks, but what will be the long-term impact of new technologies and intellectual property being by owned by companies and not states? What laws are in place to police what is and isn’t allowed to be constructed in orbit? And as the United States, Europe, China, Japan and India all compete to pass new milestones in the exploration of our solar system, would a more collaborative approach be of greater value to humanity? Or is Cold War-like competition exactly what’s needed to spark innovation? In the end, will the private sector dominate the future of Space?

Are immunity passports the golden ticket?

In this episode of Business Weekly we’ll be looking at the idea of Covid-19 immunity passports. Could they be a Willy Wonka-esque golden ticket that frees the owner from lockdown if they’ve had the disease? Some businesses and governments are certainly hopeful. However, the WHO warns that it doesn’t know how much immunity those who contract coronavirus are left with. Also with Hollywood halted, what will the future of film be after the pandemic? Will we stay happily streaming from our sofas, leaving cinemas obsolete? We’ll also take a look at some of the dubious cures for the coronavirus that have been advertised on social media. None of them work, so why are people taken in? And we look back at the life and times of the King of Gambling, Macau’s Stanley Ho who died this week age 98. Presented by Lucy Burton.

Don't Log Off

Don't log off - part eight

'A really cathartic experience' - Mary Cain on her return to running

The former Nike Oregon Project athlete - Mary Cain - tells us she now feels "free" when she runs and how she has "discovered the love for it". Cain says her performances during the indoor season have added "fuel to the fire" as she seeks to improve and she believes the Olympics being postponed until 2021 could work in her favour. Cain describes her current coach - John Henwood - as an "amazing person, friend and confidant". Cain is now working with the Boston based company, Tracksmith, on a contract that sees her as a full time employee. She says that has helped ease her worries during the covid-19 pandemic as she's not left worrying about where her next paycheck will come from.

Snooker player Mark King tells us if he wasn't able to attend Gamblers Anonymous meetings over Zoom he's "one thousand per cent" sure he would have had a bet during the covid-19 lockdown in the UK. He also tells us "95%" of tour players will be struggling financially as they haven't had any tournaments since March. King is due to play in the Championship League Snooker next week and says he couldn't contemplate getting a day job over the last few months as he has vulnerable family members and he didn't want to put them at risk.

Cool Runnings comes to Peterborough - Shanwayne Stevens and Nimroy Turgott are two members of the Jamaican bobsleigh team and they're currently stuck in lockdown in Peterborough, in England. As they can't access training facilities they've had to come up with their own way of keeping fit ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics. Their methods have drawn comparisons to the movie Cool Runnings, which was about the 1998 Jamaican bobsleigh team. One of their training exercises sees the two men push a car around an industrial estate. Stephens says they've had some funny looks and even offers to help fix the car, until they explain what they're actually doing.

This week's Sporting Witness tells the remarkable story of Tofiri Kibuuka, who was the only African competitor at the first ever Winter Paralympics. Following those games in 1976 he was forced to flee his native Uganda by the regime of Idi Amin. Tofiri then took up Norwegian nationality and became a six time medallist in athletics at the Summer Paralympics.

And - in the week that Australia's NRL returned, we speak to Justin Holbrook, who is the coach of the Gold Coast Titans. Rugby League returned in Australia, with no crowds in the stadium and artificial crowd noise played on television coverage of the matches.

The Death Row book club

When Anthony Ray Hinton was sentenced to death for a double murder, he used his time behind bars to create a book club for his fellow death row inmates. It was to get him through 28 years of solitary confinement.
Now a free man after the State of Alabama dropped all charges against him, he takes listeners back to the echoing corridors of death row and introduces them to his book club. While Hinton is only too aware of the brutal crimes his fellow inmates have committed and the need for justice for their victims, he is struck by the humanity that emerged through the book club of men who had little to live for.

Through a rich tapestry of sound, listeners will be immersed into life as a death row inmate, and transported into the imaginary world conjured up by the likes of James Baldwin and Harper Lee. This programme juxtaposes a first-hand account of living with a death sentence, and the haunting sounds of the prison, with vivid readings of inmates favourite books, and memories of book club conversations whispered through cell doors.

Creative freedom with Labdi, Hibotep, Karun and Faisal Mostrixx

A show dedicated to artists from the Kenyan and Ugandan underground. Kenyan musician and singer-songwriter Labdi, the only female Orutu player in East Africa, is going to guide us through the episode. She’ll be asking the group how they settled on making their authentic sounds, if they feel free creatively, and whether the influence of West African music is a positive or negative.

Answering those questions is: Hibotep, a Ugandan counter-culture visionary, DJ, filmmaker, fashion designer, installation artist, rapper and producer. She’s performed twice for Boiler Room at Nyege Nyege Festival and is one of the lead artists in East Africa’s New Wave. Karun is a Nairobi-based singer and songwriter, Berklee College of Music alumni and formerly part of the BET Awards nominated Camp Mulla. She’s now a solo artist and one of Kenya’s most celebrated soul voices, appearing in Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30 last year. And Faizal Mostrixx is one of Kampala’s most recognised contemporary dancers and a producer giving traditional Ugandan sounds a modern makeover with electronics in an effort to preserve its heritage. He also featured in the Resident Advisor artist 15 East African Artists You Need to Hear, and he recently provided the music for the Adidas Originals campaign Freedom.

Reflections on Faith in a Global Crisis

Community

In this fourth programme of a special Heart and Soul series for the BBC World Service, amidst a global pandemic of Coronavirus, the journalist John McCarthy hears how the notion of community has changed as many people continue to be denied the chance to gather for religious practice.

Across the world the way people live their daily lives has radically altered. What new communities are emerging? Whether online, in our family or households, or simply a new relationship with neighbours, we hear reflections on how faith communities are changing and perhaps becoming deeper in their spiritual practice during this global crisis.

While people are keeping their distance, a sense of community is growing. People of faith and no faith are reaching out to support others. There seems to be an urge to share something more profound than just being together physically or clapping for nurses and doctors.

Hiba Siddiqi works for the Islamic Relief charity in Pakistan; Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani is an award winning writer who lives in Abuja, Nigeria, Reverend Julian DeShazier is in Chicago; Tarunjit Singh Buttalia is a science professor, originally from India but now living in Ohio, USA; Sister Rachel Denton has led a life of quiet prayer alone for decades and Sanderson Jones used to be a stand up comedian. He doesn’t believe in God, but he does believe in community. So much so, he set up an alternative Sunday Assembly.

The Miracle of Istanbul

The 2020 Champions League final was due to be held at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium on Saturday May 30th, exactly 15 years after the most extraordinary night in the competitions history as Liverpool completed “The Miracle of Istanbul”.

AC Milan had a star studded line up and were overwhelming favourites, especially after they raced into a 3-0 lead. However Liverpool launched the most amazing second half comeback that culminated in winning the trophy in a penalty shootout.

To mark that anniversary, we take you back to that iconic night with those who were there - including penalty saving hero, Jerzy Dudek.

Life Changes

The Orgasm Gap

What did you learn about sexual pleasure when you were growing up?

Chances are, you didn't learn much in school. And if the latest research is anything to go by, we still have a lot to learn now.

According to a US based study, 90% of heterosexual men said they climaxed during sex, while only 60% of heterosexual women said the same.

In the UK, when the new sex education guidelines are introduced in September 2020, pleasure will remain off the agenda.

In this programme, we talk to people in the UK and Rwanda to explore how society and culture influence how we experience pleasure. We look at what we were, or weren't, taught about sex at school and meet a man who is finding ways to close the gender pleasure gap outside of the classroom.

In Rwanda we find out about a cultural practice that allegedly puts female pleasure first, but is also linked to a controversial form of female genital modification.

The World Health Organisation does not explicitly mention labial elongation as a form of female genital mutilation. It periodically reviews the typology and classification of certain practices and the next review is envisioned for 2020-2021. In this documentary, we look at competing attitudes when it comes to female sexual pleasure and explore the collision zone between individual rights and preserving cultural practices.

Trials and tribulation

Pascale Harter introduces analysis, reportage and personal reflections from correspondents around the world.

Tom Bateman reports from Israel as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has had his day in court, at the start of his corruption trial. He denies charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. He had tried and failed to get the whole process put off, but was compelled by the judges to appear for a trial that could last many months or even years. Israelis – already divided over their longest serving leader – are wondering what it means for their future.

In many African countries, including Zimbabwe, cases of Coronavirus remain low – in part thanks to proactive lockdown measures. However other infections such as TB, malaria and HIV have long posed more threat to life on the continent and now hunger due to lockdown is another risk, as Charlotte Ashton finds in Harare.

Not all countries have chosen to lockdown; instead Sweden has opted to trust people to make their own judgements about social distancing. Maddy Savage reports as pubs, shops and restaurants have remained open and residents have been left to make difficult decisions of how best to navigate living with Coronavirus.

And living in this age of Covd-19, handwashing has become a ritual for many – Bethany Bell goes back to 19th century Austria to discover its origins for preventing infection.

Point of entry

The pandemic has not stopped children and teenage migrants from showing up alone at the US border, hoping to apply for asylum. But US policy has changed dramatically, and critics say that the Trump administration is using the pandemic as a way to halt any entries across the border.

Also, Guatemalans who have been deported from the US are being shunned at home over coronavirus fears; the coronavirus pandemic has also forced refugee resettlement worldwide to grind to a halt, dividing families and stranding them thousands of miles from each other; the US has a long history of xenophobia in times of crisis, which often influences immigration policy; Canadian nurses cross the border to work in the US every day, but the pandemic could change that; and the US-Canada border is closed for all non-essential travel - as a result, businesses in the Niagara region that depend on American tourists are suffering.

James Graham and Ola Ince: Performance in a pandemic

This week we’re celebrating theatre-makers and dancers re-inventing their craft for online audiences.

How do you write, film and produce a play under lockdown? Tina speaks to playwright James Graham and theatre director Ola Ince about the play Viral, part of a series filmed in homes across Britain using digital conference technology.

If you have ever wished you could learn to dance, but never had the opportunity, now is your chance. World class dancers have been sharing their choreography with anyone with an internet connection and the passion to learn. From Ballet to Afro Beat, our reporter Saskia Edwards takes to the dance floor to discover what moves are on offer.

What is it like to arrive in a foreign country as a refugee, only to be locked in a detention centre or mental asylum? As Far as Isolation Goes, is a one on one performance created by the Lebanese artist Tania El Khoury which focuses on the mental health experiences of refugees. Tania tells Tina how her interactive work uses touch and sound to bring the experience of refugees to life.

And we head to Chile where 50 theatrical practitioners have come together to create an interactive ‘game’ where the online audience are invited to build their own experience. Come in and play.

Presented by Tina Daheley

SUN 08:32 The Food Chain (w3cszjpw)
Is our food creating pandemics?

Scientists are still trying to uncover exactly how COVID-19 emerged, although some evidence suggests the disease may have originated in bats and infected us via another animal host. Recently, we’ve seen the emergence of many such viruses - so-called zoonotic diseases - that jump from animals to humans; including Ebola, SARS and MERS. Some scientists believe they’re becoming increasingly common and that the primary driver is likely food and farming. So how have zoonotic diseases been dealt with in the past and can we learn any valuable lessons about our food chain there?

Graihagh Jackson travels to Malaysia to uncover the story of Nipah virus that first emerged in 1999, killing up to 75% of those it infected. We hear how the virus emerged, how it changed the community there forever and how it was eventually curbed. Could the story of Nipah virus hold the key to how we protect ourselves from future pandemics like COVID-19?

Aesop and the Fables

Aesop, with his tales of tortoises and hares, foxes and grapes, and wolves in sheep's clothing has been a part of world literature for over two thousand years. Since the time of the Ancient Greeks successive generations have drawn moral lessons from his fables, and over history his animals' exploits have been used to support differing ideals. Malcolm X was a fan, as was Imperial Britain, the Nazis had their version and the Trade Union movement published the fables too. There are over 700 fables, and they are supposedly written by a black slave far clever than his philosopher master.

Bridget Kendall traces the origin and meaning of Aesop's fables and explores what they can teach us about understanding our own extraordinary times with three world experts: Edith Hall, Professor of Classics at Kings College London; Vayos Liapis, Professor of Theatre at the Open University of Cyprus; Dan-el Padilla Peralta, Associate Professor of Classics at Princeton University.

Iran's long game

On 3 January 2020 Qasem Soleimani – Iran’s top military commander - was killed in a US drone attack in Baghdad. The so-called architect of Iran’s foreign policy in the Middle East, Soleimani was responsible for Iran’s political, economic and military involvement in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon. And in all those places he oversaw a growth of Iranian power. Despite many Iranians demanding vengeance for Soleimani’s death, Tehran’s response was muted – rather than launch major attacks on US targets, it chose instead to use Soleimani’s death to build support in Iraq for the ejection of the US’s remaining 5,000 troops from the country. For Washington, it was not supposed to play out like this. When the United States invaded Iraq in 2003 to oust Saddam Hussein, President Bush said he wanted to create a beacon of democracy in the Middle East and keep Iran – at loggerheads with the US for decades and part of his axis of evil – in check. But America underestimated the supposedly irrational regime in Iran which used proxy militias to frustrate the US forces in Iraq. After billions of US dollars were spent and thousands of American lives lost, it is Iran that now has most influence in Iraq.

Owen Bennett Jones goes back to 1988 when Iran was forced to accept a UN-brokered ceasefire in its bitter eight-year war with Iraq. He charts the complex interplay between Baghdad, Tehran and Washington ever since. Even opponents of the Iranian regime described Qasem Soleimani as a giant who had helped defend and advance Iranian national interests and as someone who took on the greatest power on earth – and seems to have outwitted it.

Why can’t you tickle yourself?

This week the kids take over. Our younger listeners are as curious as their parents, it seems, so presenter Marnie Chesterton seeks out the finest minds and attempts to answer a raft of their science questions, including why can’t you tickle yourself? Why don’t our eyebrows grow as long as the hair on our heads?

Not content with humankind, these whizz kids have been pondering deeply about other animals. Ava, 9, from the UK wants to know if any other animals kill for fun, like some humans do.

Not limited by planet Earth, these little thinkers have been contemplating even weightier questions. Joshua, 13, from Kenya wonders if our Solar System rotates around anything. And Seattle-based Michael, 10, puzzles over what would happen if a black hole collided with a wormhole.

These and other mysteries are uncovered by Marnie and her experts.

How motherhood changed me as a film-maker

Two prize winning documentary makers from Syria and China tell Kim Chakanetsa about using their own lives to explore the issues facing their home countries.

Waad al-Kateab has documented her life on camera in war torn Aleppo, Syria. Whilst conflict, death and cruelty raged around her, she fell in love, got married and had a baby daughter. She captures stories of loss, laughter, sacrifice and survival in her film For Sama. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, the film won the Golden Eye Documentary Prize in Cannes.

Nanfu Wang was born under the one-child policy in China during the 1980s. After moving to the United States and getting pregnant with her first child in 2017, Wang returned to China in an effort to explore the direct effects of the 'population war' on her family and the wider community. The resulting documentary, One Child Nation, won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary Feature at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

To escape the Idi Amin regime, Kibbuka then took Norwegian nationality and switched to middle-distancing running, taking part in three successive summer Paralympics. A pioneer of blind sport in Africa, he talks to Steve Hankey. The programme is a Whistledown Production.

Coronavirus in the Red States

Coronavirus outbreaks continue in various patterns around the United States, even as some state governors press ahead with lifting lockdowns. Particularly in rural states, support for getting back to normal has intensified, as some Americans feel their liberties are being trodden on by an overzealous public health regime. For epidemiologists such as Tara Smith, professor at the Emerging Infections Laboratory at Kent State University, this is a worrying trend as many rural areas are yet to fully experience the impact of coronavirus. And the medical and cultural anthropologist Martha Lincoln of San Francisco State University fears coronavirus strategies may have been consigned to the culture wars that have been raging between the left and right in the US for decades. But Florida political consultant and Republican Chris Ingram says there needs to be a balance in the response to COVID-19 and that some parts of the media and public health authorities have lost perspective.

How far can the Chinese government be blamed for Covid-19?

Ever since a mysterious virus was reported in December 2019 in the Chinese city of Wuhan, the world has been watching China.

Silenced whistleblowers, unregulated wildlife trade in wet markets, limited international cooperation, and even a local biosafety lab have been held up as examples of how China mishandled the crisis. But how far can it be blamed for Covid-19 becoming a pandemic?

This week on The Inquiry, Kavita Puri asks what the Chinese government could, or should, have done differently to prevent a global catastrophe.

Abortion Under Lockdown

Abortion clinics in Texas were forced to close their doors during the coronavirus lockdown. For several weeks, women wanting abortions could not get them. So what happened, and how did medical staff help?

To find out Philippa Thomas, who in 2018 travelled across Texas for a major BBC World Service series on abortion, catches up with some of the people, and places, she got to know then.

She’ll speak to the staff working in the clinics forced to close their doors. She’ll hear from the protesters opposed to abortion who, for the first time in many years, didn’t need to protest. How did the closure affect them, and how are they coping with clinics re-opening?

And, with a major Supreme Court decision on access to abortion due this summer, she’ll hear from the activists concerned that this period, with abortion unavailable for thousands of Texan women, could be a harbinger of the future.

Julie Baines: the making of a movie, part 1

British film producer Julie Baines knows all about long lead times. She often has to work for years to get a project financed before any filming can happen at all. For over six years, Julie had been fighting to bring ‘Four Kids and It’, a script she loves, from page to screen. The story is based on a retelling of the 1902 book ‘Five Children and It’ by the hugely popular children’s writer Jacqueline Wilson.

When we first met Julie in March 2017, filming was scheduled to start in just a few months but there were still deals to be done and actors to be cast. Film stars, including Russell Brand and Academy Award winner Michael Caine, were on board and the locations had been earmarked but would the money start flowing in time for filming to begin?

Film director Joseph Adesunloye followed Julie through the ups and downs of wrangling with lawyers and financiers as she worked to get the cameras rolling.

Produced by Hilary Dunn and Karl Bos for the BBC World Service

Jamaica: A Brother’s Story

Steve Walker investigates the murder of his brother Delroy, a child of the Windrush generation. He came to Britain from Jamaica in the 1960s and built a new life here - but always yearned for the pleasures of home. He eventually got the money together to build a dream home, but soon after returning, he was brutally killed.

Steve, a BBC technical operator, and BBC journalist Nesta McGregor travel to Jamaica, which has one of the highest murder rates in the world. They discover that some believe that criminals target “returnees”, who are viewed with envy as wealthy foreigners. Yet talking to a group of British-Jamaicans who have returned to the island in retirement, he finds they regard Jamaica as home. Steve and Nesta’s journey raises questions about migration, identity and belonging.

Babylon, City of Wonders

With its Hanging Gardens and huge walls, Babylon was celebrated as one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world; to the Israelites enslaved there under Nebuchadnezzar, it was a lasting emblem of oppression and depravity, where they wept as they remembered Zion. It was only in the last two hundred years that Babylon's fuller history has been unearthed, both the remains of its buildings and a huge number of clay tablets covered in writing, revealing a complex world that created epic stories, powerful people and an understanding of science and the stars, and it was their 60 based numbering system that led to our 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour. It has been called a cradle of civilisation.

Bridget Kendall explores the reputation of Babylon and its contribution to the world with four experts: Frances Reynolds, Shillito Fellow in Assyriology at the Oriental Institute, University of Oxford; Grant Frame, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Pennsylvania and Curator of the Babylonian Section of Penn Museum; Daniel Schwemer, Chair of Ancient Oriental Studies at the University of Würzburg; and Jaafar Jotheri, Assistant Professor in Geoarchaeology at the University of Al-Qadisiyah, Iraq.

Black girls don't swim

Seren Jones swam competitively for 13 years in the UK and in the US collegiate system. But in that time she only ever saw six other black girls in the pool. Why so few? A survey published by the University of Memphis and USA Swimming found that black respondents were significantly more concerned about getting their hair wet, and about the negative impact of chemicals on their appearances, than white respondents.

Seren explores whether maintaining ‘good’ hair really is the leading factor behind why black women do not take part in competitive swimming. And what, if anything, is being done about it?

Reflections on Faith in a Global Crisis

Prayer

A man finds himself by chance in the country he fled as a political prisoner as the virus spreads and he is trapped. An atheist looking for peace in lockdown. A writer looking for a way to stay united with her community. Very different people, with very different beliefs, united in prayer.

In a special Heart and Soul series for the BBC World Service, amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, the journalist John McCarthy brings together reflections from people of faith around the world. In this fifth programme, John hears how people are reaching for prayer at this time - in an age old response to such a crisis. Prayer can be a repeated phrase, a daily ritual, a casual conversation or a cry for help and it is not just people of conventional faith who are doing it.

Sanderson Jones does not believe in God, but the stand-up comedian says he has found something akin to prayer whilst pushing his son in a buggy in his allotted daily exercise. Mario Aguilar is a hermit who lives a life of quiet contemplation. But he was on a short visit in his native Chile when lockdown began. Order, discipline and simple prayer have carried him through what he admits has been a tough time.

As the world faces the prospect of many months of lockdown we hear how prayer and meditation can bring comfort and calm.
