How will airlines survive the coronavirus pandemic?

Airlines, airports and ground-handling firms across the globe are in survival mode, trying to keep afloat. But the aviation industry, almost entirely grounded for months due to the coronavirus pandemic, is now taking tentative steps to start flying again.

In India too, domestic flights have resumed amid easing lockdown restrictions. New rules are in place for flyers. Thermal body checks are being conducted and wearing of masks is now mandatory for all flyers.

Restarting domestic flights has also had its share of confusion and chaos. Long queues have been seen at the airports, dozens of flights cancelled at the last minute and many passengers left high and dry.

So, as planes take to the skies again, how will the pandemic impact the way people fly? And how will the airlines survive?

In this edition of WorklifeIndia, we discuss how the aviation industry is gearing up for its future flight plan.

Claudia Hammond and a panel of international experts look at the latest research into Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus which is sweeping through the world.

Don't log off - part eight

Across every continent, people are trying to make sense of a new world – one that happens mostly behind closed doors and often alone. Alan Dein connects with seven individuals whose lives have shifted under the coronavirus pandemic as they nervously anticipate what will come next in an uncertain future.

In Tehran, Golnar, an Iranian who describes herself as ‘constant traveller’ is inside her apartment – all future trips postponed. Across the town is the hostel she set up with a friend. Forced to close in the city’s lockdown it is now serving a crucial role.

Dhaka is one of the most densely populated city’s on earth. As the pandemic takes hold, entrepreneur Fahad worries for the successful delivery business he has spent years building up and the future for his parents he shares a home with.

Not everyone is inside. In Greece, Ibrahim is homeless, sheltering in an abandoned building. His friend Mikki is self-isolating and cannot help him.

Plus stories from Amsterdam, Hong Kong and Sudan of isolation and expectation.

Black Music in Europe: 1910-1920

Clarke Peters explores the music of black Europe at the time of World War One. The sounds of what would become jazz start to emerge, including African-American banjo bands who entertained London high society, and the military music of Harlem bandleader James Reese Europe which enthralled France. The programme also includes music by captured African prisoners of war, recorded in camps across Germany.
Much of the music in this series is drawn from Black Europe, a vast box set issued by Bear Family Records and documenting the sounds of the era.With readings by Paterson Joseph.

'A really cathartic experience' - Mary Cain on her return to running

The former Nike Oregon Project athlete - Mary Cain - tells us she now feels "free" when she runs and how she has "discovered the love for it". Cain says her performances during the indoor season have added "fuel to the fire" as she seeks to improve and she believes the Olympics being postponed until 2021 could work in her favour. Cain describes her current coach - John Henwood - as an "amazing person, friend and confidant". Cain is now working with the Boston based company, Tracksmith, on a contract that sees her as a full time employee. She says that has helped ease her worries during the covid-19 pandemic as she's not left worrying about where her next paycheck will come from.

Snooker player Mark King tells us if he wasn't able to attend Gamblers Anonymous meetings over Zoom he's "one thousand per cent" sure he would have had a bet during the covid-19 lockdown in the UK. He also tells us "95%" of tour players will be struggling financially as they haven't had any tournaments since March. King is due to play in the Championship League Snooker next week and says he couldn't contemplate getting a day job over the last few months as he has vulnerable family members and he didn't want to put them at risk.

Cool Runnings comes to Peterborough - Shanwayne Stevens and Nimroy Turgott are two members of the Jamaican bobsleigh team and they're currently stuck in lockdown in Peterborough, in England. As they can't access training facilities they've had to come up with their own way of keeping fit ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics. Their methods have drawn comparisons to the movie Cool Runnings, which was about the 1998 Jamaican bobsleigh team. One of their training exercises sees the two men push a car around an industrial estate. Stephens says they've had some funny looks and even offers to help fix the car, until they explain what they're actually doing.

This week's Sporting Witness tells the remarkable story of Tofiri Kibuuka, who was the only African competitor at the first ever Winter Paralympics. Following those games in 1976 he was forced to flee his native Uganda by the regime of Idi Amin. Tofiri then took up Norwegian nationality and became a six time medallist in athletics at the Summer Paralympics.

And - in the week that Australia's NRL returned, we speak to Justin Holbrook, who is the coach of the Gold Coast Titans. Rugby League returned in Australia, with no crowds in the stadium and artificial crowd noise played on television coverage of the matches.

The Death Row book club

When Anthony Ray Hinton was sentenced to death for a double murder, he used his time behind bars to create a book club for his fellow death row inmates. It was to get him through 28 years of solitary confinement.
Now a free man after the State of Alabama dropped all charges against him, he takes listeners back to the echoing corridors of death row and introduces them to his book club. While Hinton is only too aware of the brutal crimes his fellow inmates have committed and the need for justice for their victims, he is struck by the humanity that emerged through the book club of men who had little to live for.

Through a rich tapestry of sound, listeners will be immersed into life as a death row inmate, and transported into the imaginary world conjured up by the likes of James Baldwin and Harper Lee. This programme juxtaposes a first-hand account of living with a death sentence, and the haunting sounds of the prison, with vivid readings of inmates favourite books, and memories of book club conversations whispered through cell doors.

Creative freedom with Labdi, Hibotep, Karun and Faisal Mostrixx

A show dedicated to artists from the Kenyan and Ugandan underground. Kenyan musician and singer-songwriter Labdi, the only female Orutu player in East Africa, is going to guide us through the episode. She’ll be asking the group how they settled on making their authentic sounds, if they feel free creatively, and whether the influence of West African music is a positive or negative.

Answering those questions is: Hibotep, a Ugandan counter-culture visionary, DJ, filmmaker, fashion designer, installation artist, rapper and producer. She’s performed twice for Boiler Room at Nyege Nyege Festival and is one of the lead artists in East Africa’s New Wave. Karun is a Nairobi-based singer and songwriter, Berklee College of Music alumni and formerly part of the BET Awards nominated Camp Mulla. She’s now a solo artist and one of Kenya’s most celebrated soul voices, appearing in Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30 last year. And Faizal Mostrixx is one of Kampala’s most recognised contemporary dancers and a producer giving traditional Ugandan sounds a modern makeover with electronics in an effort to preserve its heritage. He also featured in the Resident Advisor artist 15 East African Artists You Need to Hear, and he recently provided the music for the Adidas Originals campaign Freedom.

In this fourth programme of a special Heart and Soul series for the BBC World Service, amidst a global pandemic of Coronavirus, the journalist John McCarthy hears how the notion of community has changed as many people continue to be denied the chance to gather for religious practice.

Across the world the way people live their daily lives has radically altered. What new communities are emerging? Whether online, in our family or households, or simply a new relationship with neighbours, we hear reflections on how faith communities are changing and perhaps becoming deeper in their spiritual practice during this global crisis.

While people are keeping their distance, a sense of community is growing. People of faith and no faith are reaching out to support others. There seems to be an urge to share something more profound than just being together physically or clapping for nurses and doctors.

Hiba Siddiqi works for the Islamic Relief charity in Pakistan; Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani is an award winning writer who lives in Abuja, Nigeria, Reverend Julian DeShazier is in Chicago; Tarunjit Singh Buttalia is a science professor, originally from India but now living in Ohio, USA; Sister Rachel Denton has led a life of quiet prayer alone for decades and Sanderson Jones used to be a stand up comedian. He doesn’t believe in God, but he does believe in community. So much so, he set up an alternative Sunday Assembly.

The Miracle of Istanbul

The 2020 Champions League final was due to be held at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium on Saturday May 30th, exactly 15 years after the most extraordinary night in the competitions history as Liverpool completed “The Miracle of Istanbul”.

AC Milan had a star studded line up and were overwhelming favourites, especially after they raced into a 3-0 lead. However Liverpool launched the most amazing second half comeback that culminated in winning the trophy in a penalty shootout.

To mark that anniversary, we take you back to that iconic night with those who were there - including penalty saving hero, Jerzy Dudek.

The Orgasm Gap

What did you learn about sexual pleasure when you were growing up?

Chances are, you didn't learn much in school. And if the latest research is anything to go by, we still have a lot to learn now.

According to a US based study, 90% of heterosexual men said they climaxed during sex, while only 60% of heterosexual women said the same.

In the UK, when the new sex education guidelines are introduced in September 2020, pleasure will remain off the agenda.

In this programme, we talk to people in the UK and Rwanda to explore how society and culture influence how we experience pleasure. We look at what we were, or weren't, taught about sex at school and meet a man who is finding ways to close the gender pleasure gap outside of the classroom.

In Rwanda we find out about a cultural practice that allegedly puts female pleasure first, but is also linked to a controversial form of female genital modification.

The World Health Organisation does not explicitly mention labial elongation as a form of female genital mutilation. It periodically reviews the typology and classification of certain practices and the next review is envisioned for 2020-2021. In this documentary, we look at competing attitudes when it comes to female sexual pleasure and explore the collision zone between individual rights and preserving cultural practices.

Tom Bateman reports from Israel as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has had his day in court, at the start of his corruption trial. He denies charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. He had tried and failed to get the whole process put off, but was compelled by the judges to appear for a trial that could last many months or even years. Israelis – already divided over their longest serving leader – are wondering what it means for their future.

In many African countries, including Zimbabwe, cases of Coronavirus remain low – in part thanks to proactive lockdown measures. However other infections such as TB, malaria and HIV have long posed more threat to life on the continent and now hunger due to lockdown is another risk, as Charlotte Ashton finds in Harare.

Not all countries have chosen to lockdown; instead Sweden has opted to trust people to make their own judgements about social distancing. Maddy Savage reports as pubs, shops and restaurants have remained open and residents have been left to make difficult decisions of how best to navigate living with Coronavirus.

And living in this age of Covd-19, handwashing has become a ritual for many – Bethany Bell goes back to 19th century Austria to discover its origins for preventing infection.
