Managing work-life after lockdown
As governments across the world ease lockdown restrictions, more and more people are now returning to work. In India, too, this week marks the start of considerable relaxation in the lockdown, which has been in effect since 24 March. Industries and businesses are making a cautious start with stringent health and safety regulations in place. Some have opted for staggered working hours, while others are going for flexible shifts.
But with the threat from the pandemic far from over, returning to work is not easy. For many, concerns remain. What about the risk of contracting the coronavirus once back in the workplace? And what about financial security, as cash strapped companies go for huge salary cuts or pink slips to staff? A recent study indicates as many as 93% of India Inc employees are anxious about returning to work over health and financial concerns.
So, in this edition of WorklifeIndia, we talk about how to manage work-life after the lockdown.

The reporter who gave away his shoes
Salman Ravi was interviewing migrant workers in a Facebook live for BBC Hindi last week. India's rapid lockdown left hundreds of thousands without jobs or income, many left with no choice but to walk the hundreds of kilometres home. While interviewing one family Salman saw the man had no shoes. So he handed over his own. The video’s been viewed more than 22 million times, but the story didn’t stop there.
In China, Wuhan-based writer FangFang has enraged many of her fellow citizens with her blog about daily life under lockdown. They accuse her of providing opponents of China with more ammunition. BBC Chinese editor Howard Zhang explains the background.
And from Somalia how the grounding of international flights has left khat chewers without their favourite stimulant, as the leaf is usually flown in from Kenya. But anti-khat campaigners hope the lockdown proves permanent. Mohamed Harare of BBC Somali has been following the story.
Arrest of Rwanda’s most wanted fugitives
Last weekend one of Rwanda’s most wanted men was arrested in France. Felicien Kabuga is alleged to be the main financier of the ethnic Hutu extremists who slaughtered 800,000 people in the 1994 genocide. Prudent Ngsengiyumva from BBC Kinyarwanda was following developments over the weekend.

Britain's World War Two crime wave
During times of crisis in the UK, World War Two is often remembered as a period when the country rallied together to fight a common enemy. British politicians still refer to the so-called "Blitz Spirit" when calling for national unity. But as Simon Watts has been finding out from the BBC archives, there was a crime wave during the war years, with a massive increase in looting and black marketeering.

Covid-19: Balancing risk and staying human
Many governments are beginning to ease restrictions placed on us aimed at containing the spread of the coronavirus. Until a vaccine is widely available, the fear of contracting Covid-19 and becoming seriously ill as a result, will remain a very real one. And as more schools, shops and workplaces begin to re-open, we’re all increasingly going to have to make decisions about the amount of risk we’re willing to take. Our fear of threats and the unknown is part of being human. But so too is our desire to hug our loved ones and meet new people. And yet these once ordinary social activities are now tainted by risk. Will we decide to abandon them? Many parents fear sending their children back to school, but may also worry whether staying at home will harm their education. How should they weigh up the risks? Staying at home for months on end may reduce the risk of becoming infected with the virus, but what are the risks to mental health from taking that more cautious approach? As the lockdowns end, how will managing risk and overcoming fear affect how we live? How will it affect what we understand to be rational, to be normal, and to be human?

Memory wars
Many criminal court cases rest on eye-witness accounts of what happened. There’s a problem though. Elizabeth Loftus – one of the world’s most influential psychologists – has shown in numerous experiments that memory is not nearly as reliable as we once believed. It is easy to alter memories. It’s even quite easy to implant entirely false memories – making people believe they remember something which never occurred.

New York Stories with Joe Pascal
New York stories with Joe Pascal
A hundred years ago the Harlem Renaissance was in full swing. It was a booming time for African-American culture and the neighbourhood was buzzing. Today, we pay tribute to Harlem, through music, poetry and food.
The story of how chef Marcus Samuelsson made Harlem his home is nothing short of remarkable. He was born in a tiny village in Ethiopia, too small to even appear on maps. Aged two, he contracted TB. His mum carried him for 75 miles to the capital for treatment. She died, but he survived and was adopted by a Swedish family who taught him a love of cooking. Marcus is now a leading light of New York cuisine running an international restaurant chain but with his heart firmly grounded in the stories of Harlem.
Jaylene Clark Owens is a spoken word artist and actor and born and bred Harlemite. She has woven the story of her changing neighbourhood into a play: Renaissance in the Belly of a Killer Whale.
Cultural historian John T Reddick gives us a personal tour of his neighbourhood.
And Martina da Silva and John Thomas share their musical tribute to Harlem.

Safety vs privacy as we head back to work
On Business Weekly we look at how our employers are going to keep us safe as we cautiously emerge from lockdown. If our temperatures are taken and our movements recorded, how will the sensitive balance between safety and privacy be maintained? As soon as we’re back at work we might want a holiday - but will anywhere be open for tourists? We get the view from Spain, the second most visited country on the planet. Plus the food supply chain in the US is in crisis as a result of Covid-19. We hear from farmers and unions who are worried for the future. We find out about the new boss at video sharing social media giant TikTok and hear from the managing director of a puzzle maker who tells us why this old fashioned game is more popular than ever. Black Music in Europe
Black Music in Europe: 1900-1910
Clarke Peters draws on a rare collection of archive recordings to explore a forgotten musical history.
Received wisdom has it that black popular music arrived in Europe with the Empire Windrush in 1948, but Clarke brings us black sounds recorded in Europe from as far back as 1900.
Clarke discovers a huge variety of black music, including very early examples of blues harmonica, scat singing and stride piano. It also includes some of the earliest African music ever recorded, from Senegalese war songs captured at the Paris World Fair in 1900 to the music of a troupe of Congolese pygmies who toured Britain in 1905-07.
Much of the music in this series is drawn from Black Europe, a vast box-set issued by Bear Family Records and documenting the sounds of the era.

Recycling Chile, recycling Spain
Leena Vuotovesi, the leader of environmental work in Europe’s greenest town, Ii in Finland, travels to Chile and Spain to compare recycling practices.
First she visits La Pintana - Chile’s unlikely climate champion: an impoverished neighbourhood plagued by crime and violence that recycles more than any other town in Chile. They turn residents’ vegetable waste into compost, used cooking oil into biodiesel and discarded cigarette ends into fertiliser - and they save money in the process. Leena meets locals who are keen to participate in building a circular economy and finds that La Pintana’s mayor, a woman with a mission to improve the local environment is key to driving the changes.
Leena then goes to a pristine part of southern Spain - a country where municipal recycling rates lag way behind EU targets. She speaks to children, teachers and waste management experts to find out why Spanish people don’t appear to care about recycling and to see what could be done to reduce environmental and economic damage.

Trump’s Achilles heel
Stories from the US, Brazil, Siberia and the Netherlands
For months Donald Trump downplayed the threat of the novel coronavirus suggesting it would one day disappear. All it took was a few White House staffers, including the press secretary for Vice-President Mike Pence, testing positive for the virus for the White House to transform from business as usual to something akin to the lockdown much of America has endured. But the looming economic crisis is a far greater preoccupation for the president, as Anthony Zurcher reports.
Brazil is now the third worst-affected country in numbers of coronavirus infections with more than 290,000 cases, and a death toll that exceeds 18,000. With so little testing in the country, experts believe the true number of infections could be 12 times higher. But an increasing number of people are failing to take it seriously. And national and state governments have very different views on when the lockdown should end. South America correspondent Katy Watson reports from Sao Paolo.
The Afro-Brazilian martial art and dance form, Capoeira continues to be practised around the world, even during the lockdown. Over the last decade, it has caught on in far cooler climes, such as Russia. Olga Smirnova went to Lake Baikal in eastern Siberia months before the pandemic broke out. She visited the world’s largest freshwater lake, where she discovered that capoeira is much more than just a form of exercise for young Russians.
The Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte called his country’s coronavirus restrictions “an intelligent lockdown” - designed to minimise the impact on society, the economy and mental health. But now some people are starting to question whether enough was done to shield the most vulnerable. And as the country adapts to life post-lockdown, there are some who are innovating to allow people to interact more safely, finds Anna Holligan

Looking out for you
The race to find a dependable vaccine for Covid-19 is on. More than 100 laboratories worldwide are competing to try to get there first, and that makes it more likely that a way to halt the pandemic will be found sooner. But with so many competing interests, it's far from clear that all of the world's citizens will have equitable access to a vaccine, once it is in production.
Also, immigrant ‘digital first responders’ provide vital services, informing people about coronavirus and helping local communities, but now they're in a financial crisis; the coronavirus pandemic is also disrupting remittances, and as a result immigrants' families are losing their safety net; many Filipino Americans are on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic, so a new initiative is bringing free meals to hospitals heavily staffed by Filipinos; and the surprising cultural contributions of the 1918 influenza pandemic.

Giving birth during a pandemic
We are thinking about survival during this emergency and bringing new life into this new world.
Giving birth is an emotional experience, but what about during this pandemic? And then there is bringing a baby into a world of lockdowns and restrictions. We hear from new mums in New York, Dublin and London.
What is it like to be in prison and pregnant? One woman in the US describes her experience inside.
Among the millions of cases of Covid-19 around the world, it is important to remember that most people do recover. We hear the stories of four people who have been in intensive care with the disease, facing the fear of dying, but who have survived to share their stories. Among them is Matilda in Ghana, who had to deal with having Covid-19 and carrying a baby. She also describes the stigma that comes with having the disease. But there is good news: she has just given birth to a healthy baby girl.

Juno Dawson and Dean Atta: Taking pride in storytelling
This week, we go inside the world of children’s books and teen fiction.
What were your favourite books growing up? What stories were you drawn to? We hear from the prize-winning authors Juno Dawson and Dean Atta about creating celebratory stories for LGBTQ+ teenagers of coming of age and coming out.
In Japan, there’s one tradition that can take a story from the pages of a book and bring it out on to a street corner for crowds of children to enjoy. It’s called Kamishibai which means ‘paper play.’ The picture book author and illustrator Satoshi Kitamura tells the story of this unique performance art.
We meet the author and activist taking on US immigration policy through the power of a children’s story. The Mexican-American writer Aida Salazar talks to the BBC’s Mugabi Turya about how the recent detention of child migrants and her personal memories living as an undocumented migrant led her to write her new book, The Land of the Cranes.
Has a film, a song or a book ever changed the way you see the world? We hear from the illustrator of The Gruffalo, Axel Scheffler, on how his love for the work of French-German artist Tomi Ungerer set him on a path of artistic expression.

School Reunions
Why do people go to their school reunion? Caz Graham goes to a 50th anniversary school reunion in the North of England where she meets people who are encountering friends who have not seen each other for years. She hears how the event prompts their memories of school days from the 1960s and also what they have done in the years since leaving school.
Caz explores the strength of feelings that school day memories produce and finds out from experts why these enduring memories draw people back to reunions. She hears from Professor Vered Vinitsky Seroussi about the importance of being able to recount what has happened in our lives to those who were our first friends during school days. The benefits of attending a school reunion are explained by Professor Jerome Short.
School reunions happen around the world and can start just a few years after leaving school – Jen Bilik has attended four reunions, starting with the tenth anniversary and explains how her attitude towards them changed over the subsequent years. She explains how attending a school reunion is a way of taking part in a longitudinal study of our lives.

My family's hidden history
Discovering how your family was caught up in major historical events...two women from India and Singapore tell Kim Chakanetsa why they started digging into family secrets, how these stories were lost or deliberately forgotten, and the role that gender played.
Aanchal Malhotra's grandparents fled what is now Pakistan in the chaos of Partition in 1947. Until she began to research her book Remnants of Partition: 21 Objects from a Continent Divided, she never knew their traumatic migration stories. They had buried them deep. Aanchal managed to persuade her grandmothers to reveal their secrets using the few objects they managed to bring with them. Aanchal is an artist and oral historian.
Sim Chi Yin's grandfather was caught up in two different conflicts, the Malayan Emergency and then the Chinese Civil War. He was executed by nationalists in China in 1949. When Chi Yin discovered this history, taboo in her family for decades, it became the starting point for her photographic project One Day We'll Understand. She has since gone on to gather oral histories from the remaining leftist rebels of the Malayan conflict. Chi Yin is a photographic artist and nominee member of Magnum Photos.

Dan Barber: My life in five dishes
In an illustrious career spanning three decades, there’s little that booking-writing, seed-breading, ‘philosopher chef’ Dan Barber has not put his hands to. Celebrated as the poster child of the ‘farm to fork’ movement, he tells Graihagh Jackson how a visit to a wheat farm called into question everything he thought he knew about agriculture and changed his cooking and ethos forever.
Surprisingly though, Dan started life wanting to be a writer not a chef. Through five dishes, we hear how a failed stint as a baker, a baptism of fire in french kitchens and running a company from a mice-infested kitchen eventually won him over to the cause. We learn that an obsession with simplicity and flavour has taken him on a farming odyssey around the world, what coronavirus can teach us about the future of food, and how it all started with a humble dish of scrambled eggs.

Reflections on Faith in a Global Crisis
Solitude
In the first programme of a special Heart and Soul series for the BBC World Service, amidst a global pandemic of Coronavirus, the journalist John McCarthy brings together reflections from people of faith around the world. In each programme specially chosen contributors reflect on the horrendous situation the whole world is dealing with.
Rituals are at the heart of many religions, they are vital to the practice of faith giving structure, comfort and focus.
The best-selling Indian writer Amish Tripathi sees daily yoga practice as central to his Hindu faith. He loves the calm and balance it brings. But with the virus bringing fear of respiratory problems he newly appreciates the breathing techniques which ease anxiety. Miriam Camerini is an Italian trainee Rabbi who is stranded in Canada, unable to travel home. She is heartbroken to hear of sick friends, but comforted by new online connections with Jerusalem. And a pastor used to non-stop cross-border travel to look after Mexican and US parishioners finds strength in bible passages he never had time to sit and study before.
With much of the world in lockdown the rituals and sacraments of conventional religion are impossible. John McCarthy hears how people are finding new ways to live out their faith in retreat.

Goethe: The story of colour
The German polymath Johann Wolfgang von Goethe considered his monumental book known in English as The Theory of Colours to be his greatest achievement. The book is a record of hundreds of Goethe’s observations about the way colour affects our mood, as well as a long and heated polemic with Isaac Newton’s colour theory. Goethe’s understanding of light and colour was scientifically flawed yet his book had a surprisingly strong influence on the fine and applied arts. To find out why, Bridget Kendall talks to art historian Alexandra Loske, colour writer Victoria Finlay and designer Odette Steele.
Alexandra Loske is an art historian who teaches at the University of Sussex, Curator at the Royal Pavilion and Brighton Museums and co-editor of the book Languages of Colour;
Victoria Finlay is a writer, former arts editor of the South China Morning Post and the author of Colour, Travels through the Paintbox and The Brilliant History of Color in Art;
Odette Steele is a Zambian textile designer recent and a graduate from the London College of Fashion at the University of the Arts, London.

Migrant Medics
Migrant Medics
More than 17,000 people have died in the UK after testing positive for coronavirus. Among them are frontline medical staff.
Dr Adil El Tayar, a British-Sudanese doctor, became the first working medic to die of coronavirus in the UK. His story is illustrative of the many international medics who even now are battling Covid-19.
Born in Sudan, he graduated from the University of Khartoum in 1982 and moved to the UK in 1996, where he then studied at university, before becoming a hospital consultant at St. George’s Hospital. He was a cousin of BBC journalist Zeinab Badawi, who paid tribute to him. She wrote. “Adel was a stoic and an optimist and was never one to imagine the worst. So he thought he would soon recover. But then he took a turn for the worse and became breathless. He knew what that meant. His children insisted he go to hospital. He did. He was admitted and put on a ventilator. A few days later his daughter told me his medical team informed the family that his lungs had come under attack from coronavirus and that he could not breathe unaided. Soon after the ventilator was switched off. It had taken just twelve days for Adel to go from being a fit and capable doctor working in a busy hospital to himself lying in a hospital morgue.”
For Zeinab, the story raises wider questions. A vast number of doctors, nurses and others have come to Britain and other Western counties after training in the developing world. Naturally, they want to improve their standards of living and work in more sophisticated medical systems. But is it fair for the rich world to benefit by effectively cherry-picking the brightest and best from poorer countries? Or can the expertise of those medical staff who migrate to wealthier countries benefit their home nations? Some argue that this brain cycle – rather than a brain drain – along with remittances, is actually of benefit to the developing world.

How does a language begin?
There are over 7000 living languages on earth today. These mutually unintelligible means of communication are closely associated with different groups' identities. But how does a new language start out? That’s what listener BK wants to know. BK lives on one of the islands of the Philippines, where he speaks three languages fluently and has noticed there is a different language on almost every island.
Presenter Anand Jagatia finds language experts from around the world who tell him about the many different ways that languages can form. Professor Dan Everett explains that languages naturally change over centuries to the point they are mutually unintelligible, and Quentin Everett describes how his research has identified striking similarities between biological, and linguistic evolution. Sally Thomason, Professor of linguistics in the USA tells us about the more unusual ways that languages can form through contact, or purposeful distancing measures, and Anand speaks with a producer of the BBC’s Pidgin service, about how the contact language nigerian pidgin may be developing into an official language West Africa. Finally, the inventor of a constructed language from the movie Avatar, tells CrowdScience what he has learned about language by creating the fully functional Na’vi language from scratch, and what Na’vi’s adoption by speakers around the world can tell us about the importance of language for creating community.
Hearing from different languages from around the world through the programme, CrowdScience get to grips with the many ways new languages can form.

In Their Element
Aluminium and strontium
Andrea Sella, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at University College London, celebrates the art and science of the chemical elements. Today he looks at aluminium and strontium, elements that give us visual treats.
At the time of Emperor Napoleon the Third in 19th century France aluminium was more valuable than gold and silver. The Emperor liked the metal so much he had his cutlery made out of it. But once a cheaper way was discovered to extract aluminium it began to be used for all kinds of objects, from aeroplanes to coffee pots. Andrea talks to Professor Mark Miodownik at the Institute of Making at UCL about why aluminium is such a useful material, from keeping crisps crisp to the tinsel on our Christmas trees. And he talks about the lightness of bicycles made from aluminium with Keith Noronha, of Reynolds Technology.
Strontium is the 15th most common element in the earth yet we really only come into contact with it in fireworks. It gives us the deep red colour we admire in a pyrotechnics display. Andrea meets Mike Sansom of Brighton Fireworks who explains how a firework is constructed and reveals the chemical mix that creates the bright red flashes.
Professor Thomas Klapötke of the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich talks about his search for a substitute for strontium in fireworks and about how the element can get into our bones. Rupert Cole at the Science Museum in London shows Andrea how Humphry Davy was the first to extract strontium from rocks found in Scotland.
And Janet Montgomery, Professor of Archaeology at Durham University, explains how strontium traces have revealed that our Neolithic ancestors moved around much more than was previously thought. Nearly half the people buried around Stonehenge in Southern England were born in places with different rocks from those under Salisbury Plain in Southern England.

The ancient technology getting a second wind
Old ships, powered by the wind, are sailing small amounts of cargo around the world again to help cut pollution. Some of them were built more than 100 years ago.
The shipping industry moves 80% of traded goods around the planet. But the diesel engines that propel modern cargo ships through the oceans burn the dirtiest type of fuel.
Nick Holland speaks to sailors and brokers who, for the sake of the environment, are breathing new life into these vintage vessels.
And he hears how new types of sails could get monster-sized modern cargo ships using the wind as well.

The Death Row book club
When Anthony Ray Hinton was sentenced to death for a double murder, he used his time behind bars to create a book club for his fellow death row inmates. It was to get him through 28 years of solitary confinement.
Now a free man after the State of Alabama dropped all charges against him, he takes listeners back to the echoing corridors of death row and introduces them to his book club. While Hinton is only too aware of the brutal crimes his fellow inmates have committed and the need for justice for their victims, he is struck by the humanity that emerged through the book club of men who had little to live for.
Through a rich tapestry of sound, listeners will be immersed into life as a death row inmate, and transported into the imaginary world conjured up by the likes of James Baldwin and Harper Lee. This programme juxtaposes a first-hand account of living with a death sentence, and the haunting sounds of the prison, with vivid readings of inmates favourite books, and memories of book club conversations whispered through cell doors.

Tyler Childers: Run these roads
Tyler Childers was nominated for a Grammy in early 2020. He’s an emerging talent who is true to his Appalachian roots.
He grew up in the foothills of East Kentucky, his father worked in the coal industry, and his songs reflect the tough life in that part of the world - unemployment, broken relationships, drugs, alcohol. He draws on these themes in order to stay faithful to the place: "I hope that people in the area that I grew up in find something they can relate to. I hope that I'm doing my people justice and I hope that maybe someone from somewhere else can get a glimpse of the life of a Kentucky boy."
The lyrics of one of his songs describes the exhilaration of driving recklessly: “A damn good feeling to run these roads". For his most recent Country Squire album, Tyler says much of it was written on the road, including love songs dedicated to his wife. He also drew inspiration from unusual sources, including Allen Touissant's 1970s album Southern Nights.
We take will a deep dive into contemporary life, music and culture of East Kentucky, with help from Brett Ratliff, programme director of community radio station WMMT in Whitesburg, Kentucky, in the heart of Appalachia's coal fields, and hear about Kentucky story-telling from author Silas House.
And with his US tour suspended because of the coronavirus lockdown, we hear how Tyler and his wife Senora May - also a singer songwriter - are drawing on their home, and their own relationship, for creative inspiration.

The growth of fake coronavirus cures
In today’s programme, we’ll be looking at how fake coronavirus cures are marketed and why people are buying them. We’ll also be asking if social media platforms need to do more to stop the flow of disinformation. Claire Wardle who leads strategy at First Draft News tells us why social media is a fertile ground for spreading rumours and disinformation. Stephen Lea, Emeritus Professor of Psychology at Exeter University tells us why are people paying good money for unproven remedies. Plus, the BBC’s Pumza Fihlani tells us about a supposed herbal remedy being touted by the Madagascan government.

Risking my life to protect Congo's forest
In the 1990s the Democratic Republic of Congo, then Zaire, was in the grip of a violent civil war. The conflict reached the remote area of the Ituri forest in the north-east of the country - an area with enormous biodiversity but also rich in minerals and diamonds.
Dedicated conservationist Corneille Ewango hid in the forest from armed groups to try and protect the area’s plants and animals, despite repeated threats to his life. He spoke to Rachael Gillman for Witness History.

The Coronavirus Front Line
Testing treatments
The way we treat those with Covid-19 looks set to change. Doctors are looking ahead to a time, not too far off, when anyone with early symptoms will be able to drive to a testing centre, get swabbed and an instant result, and then receive a prescription for a combination of effective drugs before the worst of their symptoms take hold. Winifred Robinson hears from doctors and patients, including the first patient in the United Kingdom to take part in one of the new trials.
With the death toll from this pandemic still rising across the world, clinical trials that would have taken years to approve and carry out are being done in weeks. Bradford Royal Infirmary has been recruiting for the United Kingdom-wide Recovery Trial, which involves thousands of patients at 165 hospitals. When 18-year-old Marium Zummer was rushed to hospital with symptoms of Covid-19, doctors feared she might need to be placed on a ventilator. Her father begged for her to be given one of the new treatments, and Winifred follows her progress.
This series comes from a hospital in the North of England, with recordings made by Dr John Wright, who works there. He’s an epidemiologist and has helped the hospital prepare and cope with a huge influx of patients. The hospital layout has been redesigned to try to keep Covid and non-Covid patients apart, but without a testing system that delivers results within hours, it’s proving hard to rule out the risks of infection taking place. This is becoming more of an issue as the hospital increasingly opens up for non-urgent care.

Iran's Long Game
27/05/2020 GMT
Iran is now calling the shots in Iraq. How did the clerics outmanoeuvre the US? Owen Bennett-Jones speaks to key insiders and players in search of answers.
On January 3rd this year Qasem Soleimani – Iran’s top military commander - was killed in a US drone attack in Baghdad. The so-called architect of Iran’s foreign policy in the Middle East, Soleimani was responsible for Iran’s political, economic and military involvement in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon. And in all those places he oversaw a growth of Iranian power. Despite many Iranians demanding vengeance for Soleimani’s death, Tehran’s response was muted – rather than launch major attacks on US targets, it chose instead to use Soleimani’s death to build support in Iraq for the ejection of the US’s remaining 5,000 troops from the country. For Washington, it wasn’t supposed to play out like this. When the United States invaded Iraq in 2003 to oust Saddam Hussein, President Bush said he wanted to create a beacon of democracy in the Middle East and keep Iran – at loggerheads with the US for decades and part of his axis of evil – in check. But America underestimated the supposedly irrational regime in Iran which used proxy militias to frustrate the US forces in Iraq. After billions of US dollars were spent and thousands of American lives lost, it is Iran that now has most influence in Iraq.
In this documentary for the BBC World Service, Owen Bennett Jones goes back to 1988 when Iran was forced to accept a UN-brokered ceasefire in its bitter eight year war with Iraq. He charts the complex interplay between Baghdad, Tehran and Washington ever since. Even opponents of the Iranian regime described Qasem Soleimani as a giant who had helped defend and advance Iranian national interests and as someone who took on the greatest power on earth – and seems to have outwitted it.

The Gwangju massacre
The South Korean army crushed a popular uprising in the city of Gwangju on 27 May 1980. Pro-democracy demonstrators had taken control of the city and were calling for an end to military rule. Hundreds of people, many of them students, were shot and beaten to death. Mike Lanchin spoke to Kim Jong and Linda Lewis who were living in Gwangju at the time.

Belarus: Masking the virus
Belarus’s all-powerful President has focused global attention on his country by ostentatiously downplaying the coronavirus pandemic. Alexander Lukashenko has allowed shops, markets and restaurants and football stadiums to remain open and is encouraging people to go out to work. In early May he laid on a grand military spectacle celebrating victory in WW2, in defiance of social distancing advice. He told Belarussians they could stay healthy by drinking vodka and driving tractors in the fields and dismissed concerns over the virus as “psychosis.” But medics and bereaved families say otherwise. And with a doubling of infections every two or three days, there is not much to laugh about in Belarus. Medical staff have allegedly been sacked and even detained for speaking out about poor conditions in hospitals and the inaccurate death certificates.
Assignment explores what lies behind President Lukashenko’s position. We hear from community activists, war veterans, tech-wizards and many other diverse people in Belarus. Lucy Ash pieces it all together with reporting by Ilya Kuziatsou.
Produced by Monica Whitlock.

Winston Churchill's doctor
Many people were shocked when Winston Churchill's personal doctor published his memories of Britain's wartime leader in 1966. Churchill's family tried to halt the publication, but as historian Piers Brendon has been telling Vincent Dowd, the doctor, Lord Moran, had unique insights into the great man's behaviour.

Aesop and the Fables
Aesop, with his tales of tortoises and hares, foxes and grapes, and wolves in sheep's clothing has been a part of world literature for over two thousand years. Since the time of the Ancient Greeks successive generations have drawn moral lessons from his fables, and over history his animals' exploits have been used to support differing ideals. Malcolm X was a fan, as was Imperial Britain, the Nazis had their version and the Trade Union movement published the fables too. There are over 700 fables, and they are supposedly written by a black slave far clever than his philosopher master.
Bridget Kendall traces the origin and meaning of Aesop's fables and explores what they can teach us about understanding our own extraordinary times with three world experts: Edith Hall, Professor of Classics at Kings College London; Vayos Liapis, Professor of Theatre at the Open University of Cyprus; Dan-el Padilla Peralta, Associate Professor of Classics at Princeton University.

Reflections on Faith in a Global Crisis
Reflections on a Global Crisis: Community
In this fourth programme of a special Heart and Soul series for the BBC World Service, amidst a global pandemic of Coronavirus, the journalist John McCarthy hears how the notion of community has changed as many people continue to be denied the chance to gather for religious practice.
Across the world the way people live their daily lives has radically altered. What new communities are emerging? Whether online, in our family or households, or simply a new relationship with neighbours, we hear reflections on how faith communities are changing and perhaps becoming deeper in their spiritual practice during this global crisis.
While people are keeping their distance, a sense of community is growing. People of faith and no faith are reaching out to support others. There seems to be an urge to share something more profound than just being together physically or clapping for nurses and doctors.
Hiba Siddiqi works for the Islamic Relief charity in Pakistan; Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani is an award winning writer who lives in Abuja, Nigeria, Reverend Julian DeShazier is in Chicago; Tarunjit Singh Buttalia is a science professor, originally from India but now living in Ohio, USA; Sister Rachel Denton has led a life of quiet prayer alone for decades and Sanderson Jones used to be a stand up comedian. He doesn’t believe in God, but he does believe in community. So much so, he set up an alternative Sunday Assembly.
