SAT 10:00 Double or Nothing: Partnerships in Radio Comedy (b007wdvv)
Hugh Dennis sets out to prove that two of anything is fun - and that radio comedy is especially good served in pairs. He presents a selection of six comic duos: Little Britain (March 2002), Much Binding in the Marsh (Feb 1949), In All Directions (Oct 1952), Absolute Power (Jan 2002), Armstrong and Miller (March 1998), and Laurel and Hardy On Tour (2006).

Over three hours, you'll get a firm flavour of the dynamics of double acts in action. Double acts aren't always performers - writing partnerships are just as important, and sometimes it's a couple of characters which make great comedic chemistry.

An alumni of Cambridge footlights, Hugh Dennis is perhaps best known for his own association with Steve Punt - both hosts of BBC Radio 4's long-running comedy hit The Now Show, as well as part of the legendary line-up in 4 Extra's archive stable-mate The Mary Whitehouse Experience. Hugh is also star of Andy Hamilton's hit BBC One TV sitcom Outnumbered.

TUE 13:30 The Mind of Mr JG Reeder (b0082gyz)
1, The Poetical Policeman

Mr JG Reeder has the mind of a criminal, using it to uncover the peculiar circumstances surrounding a bank robbery, the death of the night-watchman and the part in the plot played by his beautiful daughter.

This first of four stories provides useful insight into the past of Mr JG Reeder, whose novel methods bring the criminals of 1920s London to justice.

Read by David Horovitch.

Edgar Wallace is best known for his popular detective and suspense stories which earned him the title, "King of the Modern Thriller."

Although created at roughly the same time, Mr JG Reeder is the diametric opposite of Sam Spade, Philip Marlow and Mike Hammer. He is a shabbily dressed, diffident civil servant who prefers a cup of tea and a slice of seed cake to a shot of something stronger.

Reeder is a uniquely English detective. An apparent fuddy-duddy working in some obscure capacity in the Public Prosecutor's office, he actually has a razor-sharp intellect and is a super-sleuth. He solves his mysteries because he fully understands the "criminal mind".

Abridged for radio by Neville Teller.

Producer: Gemma Jenkins
