SAT 19:15 Saturday Review (b0094ypl)
Brian de Palma’s Redacted, Manil Suri's The Age of Shiva

Redacted
Brian de Palma’s latest film was made for just $5 million using high-definition video and using a cast of unknowns. It is a fictionalised account of a real-life event, concerning the rape of a 15-year-old Iraqi girl and the murder of her family by US troops. The film was fictionalised for legal reasons. It’s presented as a reconstruction of events that has been concocted from a mixture of internet uploads, blogs, a TV documentary and camcorder footage.

Random
Debbie Tucker-Green’s play is performed by one actress, Nadine Marshall, who plays all four members of a family - Mum, Dad, Sister, Brother – and takes place over the course of what starts out as a normal day but ends in tragedy.

China Design Now
The V&A’s new exhibition, China Design Now, explores the recent explosion of new design in China and looks at the impact of rapid economic development on architecture and design. It focuses on three rapidly expanding cities – Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen – and brings together architecture, fashion, and graphic design, as well as film, photography, youth culture, digital media, and product and furniture design.

The Age of Shiva
Manil Suri is a mathematics professor who found fame when his first book, The Death of Vishnu, became an international bestseller. His latest novel, The Age of Shiva, is the second book in what will eventually be a trilogy. The final book will be called The Birth of Brahma.

The Age of Shiva traces the fortunes of a family in the aftermath of Indian independence. Meera, the narrator, is seventeen years old when she catches her first glimpse of Dev, performing a song so infused with passion that it arouses in her the first flush of erotic longing. When Meera’s reverie comes true, it does not lead to the fairy-tale marriage she imagined. It is only when her son is born that Meera begins to imagine a life of fulfilment, but to the detriment of her child as she begins to smother him with her love.

The Curse of Comedy
This season of dramas on BBC Four reveals the turmoil and heartache found behind the laughter created by five great entertainers who rose to fame during the Sixties.

In The Curse of Steptoe Jason Isaacs and Phil Davis portray Harry H Corbett and Wilfrid Brambell, the stars of hit sitcom Steptoe And Son, in a tale of two incompatible men bound together by success.

Hancock and Joan tells the story of Tony Hancock’s love affair with John le Mesurier’s wife and his battle with drink. Ken Stott and Maxine Peake star.

Tariq Ali

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the radical thinker, writer and broadcaster Tariq Ali. Forty years since the streets of London were filled with demonstrators, Tariq Ali describes how he came to be involved in anti-establishment politics and how, from an early age, he felt drawn towards those people who were the underdogs of society. He was born to privileged, atheist parents in Pakistan, he led his first street protest at 12 and his first strike at 15 He became increasingly political until, after a military coup, his parents were advised to send him out of the country for his own safety and so he came to study at Oxford.

He travelled to Vietnam at the height of the war to observe and document the suffering there and also travelled to Bolivia and Palestine. His role as an anti-establishment agitator was cemented when he led two revolutionary marches in London in 1968. Forty years on - and after a successful career as a film-maker and writer - he says it remains important to voice dissenting views and he insists that despite his privilege and status he remains firmly outside the establishment.

Euro-Islamaphobia - Viewing the Recently Dead

EURO-ISLAMAPHOBIA
Pulitzer Prize winning historian David Levering-Lewis talks about his new book God’s Crucible: Islam and the Making of Europe 570-1215, a period during which “Islam and Christianity uneasily co-existed on the continent just beginning to be known as Europe”.

VIEWING THE RECENTLY DEAD
In the past the parlour, or sometimes the kitchen table would be used to lay out the body of a recently deceased loved one or family member. But as attitudes changed, and the embalmers’ art developed, the funeral home became the new focus for a more formal kind of ‘viewing’. Laurie Taylor is joined by Sheila Harper and Kate Berridge author of Vigor Mortis: a cultural commentary on death to discuss how our responses to viewing the ‘recently dead’ have changed. Do we mourn differently? Do we still want to be confronted with the physical evidence of death? Sheila Harper will be presenting the findings of her research at the forthcoming BSA Annual Conference in a paper entitled ‘Shh! Granddad is sleeping!: Viewing the recently-dead in England and the United States’.

They'll both be responsible for managing their areas - Debbie the arable and Adam the livestock and fruit - and will no longer be managed by Brian. In addition they'll be taking a substantial share of the profits. Wrong-footed, Debbie and Adam agree on a one third share each of the profits. However, Brian's still going to split the farm three ways in his will. Debbie and Adam agree that although this isn't ideal, they would at least have the chance to build up enough capital to buy Ruairi out. The deal's agreed.

Later Brian tells Jennifer that he made the offer because he'd do anything to keep them together. To celebrate, he suggests taking Jennifer out to dinner. Seeing the positive side Jennifer says it will mean they'll have more time together for holidays and travel - it's about time. Brian's thoughtful when he replies yes, yes it will.

The two were deeply in love but soon the husband to be began to have doubts. He worried that he couldn’t make Regine happy and stay true to himself and his dreams of philosophy. It was a terrible dilemma, but Kierkegaard broke off the engagement – a decision from which neither he nor his fiancée fully recovered. This unhappy episode has become emblematic of the life and thought of Søren Kierkegaard - a philosopher who confronted the painful choices in life and who understood the darker modes of human existence. Yet Kierkegaard is much more than the gloomy Dane of reputation. A thinker of wit and elegance, his ability to live with paradox and his desire to think about individuals as free have given him great purchase in the modern world and he is known as the father of Existentialism. With Jonathan Rée, Visiting Professor at Roehampton University and the Royal College of Art; Clare Carlisle, Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Liverpool; John Lippitt, Professor of Ethics and Philosophy of Religion at the University of Hertfordshire.

Many of us suffer with back pain at some time in our lives.

Sitting in front of a computer all day, driving for long periods, carrying heavy bags and slouching on the sofa can all contribute to bad posture.

Our posture often has a part to play in the state of our backs, and other parts of the body.

But what is the best way to improve our posture? Are our parents and teachers correct to tell us to stand up straight? What exercises can help?

If you suffer from back, neck or leg pain or sciatica, what is the best way to alleviate the pain?

On this edition of Check Up, Barbara Myers puts questions about posture to Dr Peter Skew, a GP who specialises in treating back pain.

75th Anniversary of Polythene - Sound Perception

75th Anniversary of Polythene
In 1933 a remarkable series of coincidences led to the discovery of a material that would change our lives forever. In this week’s Material World, Quentin Cooper celebrates the 75th anniversary of the discovery of polythene. He is joined by Geoff Mitchell, Professor of Polymer Physics at the University of Reading and by Professor Dame Julia Higgins from Imperial College London to find out about polythene’s uses, abuses and why polymers and plastics are still at the front line of scientific research.

Sound Perception
How does the brain process sound? How exactly can we distinguish between the clatter of cutlery or the beauty of singing. Sounds are pressure waves moving through the air, but our brains somehow manage to interpret this one-dimensional information and reconstruct the object that created it. Quentin is joined by Jan Schnupp, Neuroscientist from the University of Oxford and Sophie Scott from the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience to find out how.
