Composer Thomas Ades plus a National Youth Orchestra studio takeover!

Tom Service with guests, stories and the perfect classical soundtrack for the weekend!

Tom is joined by the composer and conductor Thomas Adès. As a composer, Adès has created a stunning musical language all of his own and is one of the world's most inventive and in demand composers. Described as a 'modern masterpiece', his multi-award winning ballet 'Dante' is being performed at the Proms this week, the first part by the LA Phil and Gustavo Dudamel and the second with the young players of the National Youth Orchestra, with whom Adès has a long association.

Some of those players will be joining Tom in the studio to play an exclusive live session and chat about their concert happening later that day at the BBC Proms.

Also, as part of our focus on musical Creators, Tom talks to the Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz. Her music fuses Mexican traditions with contemporary classical music and has won her Best Contemporary Classical Composition at the Grammys for the past two years, including her ballet Revolución diamantina, which is given its UK premiere at the Proms this week. She chats to Tom about her musical language and background.

1794, Paris. At the height of the Reign of Terror, the pianist and composer Hélène de Montgeroult stands accused before the revolutionary authorities. According to a story that has become part of musical legend, she escapes the guillotine by improvising on La Marseillaise, transforming a patriotic song into a demonstration of artistic brilliance.

As France is reshaped by revolution, musicians find themselves navigating a rapidly changing world. Aristocratic salons give way to public festivals, revolutionary songs fill the streets, and figures such as Hélène de Montgeroult and Joseph de Bologne must adapt to new political realities. Amid upheaval, violence and uncertainty, music becomes a powerful tool for expressing collective identity, civic ideals and national belonging.

Paraorchestra, the bold collective of disabled and non-disabled musicians, brings an immersive take on Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians. When it was first performed 50 years ago, the work made Reich a household name and propelled Minimalism into the mainstream. Here it’s performed with the players distributed on plinths across Beacon Hall, breaking the barrier between audience and performers and allowing you to explore the work’s sublime shifting phases as you move among pulsing marimbas, pianos and vocals, or simply remain still and allow yourself to be enveloped.

Gerald Barry's La Plus Forte

A broadcast of Gerald Barry's short opera 'La Plus Forte' featuring the mezzo-soprano Alison Scherzer, the BBC Concert Orchestra and conductor Jérôme Kuhn. Based on the late 19th century play 'The Stronger' by Swedish playwright August Strindberg, it's a subtle cat-and-mouse game that turns Strindberg's dynamic on its head.
First premiered in Paris in 2007, this new recording came out in April this year.

Also, music by American composer David Lang, from the 2024 Venice Music Biennale (his string quartet 'daisy'). Plus the latest New Music Show recordings from around the UK, as well as an array of new releases.

This week’s Choral Reflection features the music of a little known Bristolian composer - William Child, and there's music from a new release by pianist Cecile Licad.

There's also youthful romance in music by Shostakovich, a heartfelt Handelian aria, and a chance to hear a stunning recording of Walton's Violin Concerto by violinist Akiko Suwanai, with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and conductor Sakari Oramo in full.

Richard Armitage

The actor Richard Armitage refuses to be pigeon-holed. He first made a national impact as the mill owner John Thornton in the BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South. Audiences around the world know him as Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson. He’s played a serial killer in Hannibal, a spy in Spooks, and has starred in four Harlan Coben thrillers on Netflix.

He’s also written thrillers: the most recent is The Cut, which examines childhood trauma and the dangers of buried secrets - and also draws on his own musical experiences, because the main character, like Richard, plays the cello.

His choices include works by Arvo Part, Mahler, Rameau, and Gluck.

Debussy's La Mer

Sara Mohr-Pietsch takes us on a listening journey towards Claude Debussy's orchestral work La Mer.

On the way, we encounter seascapes from a gentle jazz trio by Bill Evans to Joseph Haydn's 'Rolling in Foaming Billows' from his oratorio The Creation. La Mer was partly inspired by Japanese artworks, and we hear another art-inspired piece by Ottorino Respighi, plus a Portrait of a Japanese Garden by Kaija Saariaho. And, reflecting the fact that Debussy worked on the score of La Mer in Eastbourne, there's a vintage tune from Albert Sandler and his Grand Hotel (Eastbourne) Orchestra.

Follow the Camino – the ancient pilgrim route – to Spain’s Santiago de Compostela in the spiritually charged choral ecstasy of Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles: a pilgrimage in sound. The 500-mile musical journey starts at the Abbey of Roncesvalles at the foot of the Pyrenees, travelling across the country via the great cathedrals of Burgos and León, and with music that sees minimalist patterns meet the beauty of plainchant and bell chimes. Nigel Short conducts his award-winning choir Tenebrae – the work’s ‘magnificent’ commissioners – in this Proms premiere.

A musical postcard from 18th-century Vienna. The threat to Austria from Napoleon’s army is vividly rendered in the turbulent opening of Haydn’s choral tour de force, the ‘Nelson Mass’, but it’s Nelson’s victory we hear in the celebratory ending. There’s brooding spiritual darkness from Zelenka’s Miserere and Mozart’s Masonic Funeral Music – written in response to the deaths of two of the composer’s fellow Freemasons. Soprano Erin Morley is the soloist in two of Mozart’s showstopping ‘insertion’ arias.

Fragile and hauntingly lyrical, violent and sensual, these distilled works – few of them longer than a minute – explore the strange kinship between composer and author in music haunted by the ghosts of Bach, Bartók, Schumann and more. Celebrated Finnish musicians Anu Komsi and Sakari Oramo perform this intimate recital as part of the composer’s 100th-birthday celebrations.

Noble Beginnings

This week, Donald introduces us to the remarkable life story and unsung musical innovations of Hélène de Montgeroult.

There aren’t many composers who can claim that music saved their life – at least, in the literal sense. But for Hélène de Montgeroult, it was her astounding powers of improvisation that got her out of the stickiest situation imaginable, hauled in front of the guillotine during the French Revolution. This week, we’ll follow her rollercoaster tale and hear how she had her own revolutionary impact on the piano literature. Described as a precursor of Romanticism, anticipating the language of Schubert and Mendelssohn, audiences said her playing “made the keys speak”. She broke ground as the first female professor at the Paris Conservatoire and left behind 600 pages of music, including a complete course for piano which elevated the technical study into a miniature lyrical artform. As Donald pieces together her tantalising story, he’s joined by pianist Clare Hammond, who has spent recent years getting to know Montgeroult and recording an album of her études.

Today, we hear about Hélène’s early years, growing up in aristocratic circles. For young women, the harpsichord was wielded as a tool for courtship, but for Helene, her musical prospects immediately ran deeper. Little did she know then that her noble background would eventually become one of her biggest artistic obstacles and would even someday put her life in danger.

Katie Derham presents a special edition of In Tune live from The Hub – a towering Gothic Revival building at the top of the Royal Mile and the home of the Edinburgh International Festival. She speaks to Festival Director Nicola Benedetti, and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, whose Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is in residence at this year's festival. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the combined orchestras of London’s Royal Academy of Music and New York’s Juilliard School in three 20th-century orchestral masterworks. Award-winning Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang is the soloist in Berg’s heartbreaking elegy of a Violin Concerto, with its embedded Bach chorale, dedicated ‘to the memory of an angel’. Completed in the dying days of the Second World War, Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements offers a ‘cinematographic impression of the war’ – jagged and convulsively rhythmic. Moving ‘from austerity to the affirmation of life’, Bartók’s 1943 Concerto for Orchestra responds more optimistically to war, defiant in its folk-inspired melodies and collective virtuosity.

This week, Soweto is joined by a leading figure in British jazz, saxophonist, composer and educator Denys Baptiste.

After attending bassist Gary Crosby’s regular Tomorrow’s Warriors jam sessions, Denys was invited to join Gary’s new group, Nu Troop. From there he has become a formidable bandleader, as well as educator, and is part of the current membership of legendary band Cymande.

Denys was also part of the line up for this year’s ‘Round Midnight Prom, recorded live at Bristol Beacon on 8th August. Denys, with the Gary Crosby Quartet, performed music from John Coltrane’s iconic album ‘A Love Supreme’ in celebration of his centenary this year. Also on the line up was local Bristol trio Waldo’s Gift and Mercury-nominated group Cassie Kinoshi’s seed. The evening was hosted by Jamie Cullum.

You can hear highlights from that performance on Friday night’s edition of the programme.

Ahead of that, from Monday to Thursday, Denys is taking us round his record collection, sharing some of the albums that have influenced him and that he continues to appreciate.

To begin his week, Denys chooses a record by a pioneering musician and fellow saxophonist that he admires.

There is also music from Galliano, Ornette Coleman, and Charlotte Keefe.

‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades.

The Revolution Rumbles

This week, Donald introduces us to the remarkable life story and unsung musical innovations of Hélène de Montgeroult.

There aren’t many composers who can claim that music saved their life – at least, in the literal sense. But for Hélène de Montgeroult, it was her astounding powers of improvisation that got her out of the stickiest situation imaginable, hauled in front of the guillotine during the French Revolution. This week, we’ll follow her rollercoaster tale and hear how she had her own revolutionary impact on the piano literature. Described as a precursor of Romanticism, anticipating the language of Schubert and Mendelssohn, audiences said her playing “made the keys speak”. She broke ground as the first female professor at the Paris Conservatoire and left behind 600 pages of music, including a complete course for piano which elevated the technical study into a miniature lyrical artform. As Donald pieces together her tantalising story, he’s joined by pianist Clare Hammond, who has spent recent years getting to know Montgeroult and recording an album of her études.

Today, we hear how the newly married Hélène joined the “grand monde” of Paris and made her mark on its most exclusive salons. But as the Great Terror hit the city, the ground began to tremble under her feet. She took flight with her husband on a dramatic diplomatic mission, but their enemies were lying in wait.

Pastoral peace meets infernal horrors in two vividly descriptive orchestral classics. Cuckoos and nightingales call, a brook gently gurgles and tavern musicians strike up a dance in Beethoven’s ‘Pastoral’ Symphony. Thomas Adès paints a bleaker landscape in Inferno – the first panel of his Dante ballet (hear part two, Purgatorio, performed by the National Youth Orchestra on 8 August). ‘Physical, vivid and grotesque’, it’s a score that finds strange beauty in horror.

Proms Across the UK: Feldman’s ‘Crippled Symmetry’

The Royal Northern Sinfonia’s Music Director Dinis Sousa is joined by principal musicians Helena Gourd and Jude Carlton to perform the mesmerising meditation that is centenary composer Morton Feldman’s Crippled Symmetry. Inspired by the irregular patterning of Turkish rugs, the piece is an exploration of subtle change in terms of pitch, rhythm and colour.

Elizabeth Alker introduces an afternoon of great summer music making with concert performances from home and abroad, including highlights from the BBC Proms, plus exclusive recordings from the Verbier Music Festival and the Granada Music Festival.

The obsessive, often wild rhythms of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 – famously described by Wagner as ‘the apotheosis of the dance’ – meet the politically charged pulse of Gabriela Ortiz’s Revolución diamantina: music ‘full of visceral primeval rhythms and mysterious, soulful sound-worlds’. Taking Mexico’s 2019 Glitter Revolution as its starting point, this groove-driven, urgent score – ‘a ritual in motion’ – roars against female oppression in music of fierce, hypnotic beauty.

Elizabeth Alker introduces an afternoon of great summer music making with concert performances from home and abroad, including highlights from the BBC Proms, plus exclusive recordings from the Verbier Music Festival and the Granada Music Festival.

To open, a BBC Proms performance of Liszt’s dazzling Mephisto Waltz No. 1 with the National Youth Orchestra under Thomas Adès. Later, the National Open Youth Orchestra joins players from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for a vibrant Proms Across the UK concert from Bristol Beacon, featuring music by Vivaldi, Florence Price, Oliver Cross, Michael Betteridge and Charlotte Harding. The Proms selections conclude with Alban Berg’s haunting Violin Concerto, performed by Vilde Frang with the Juilliard Orchestra, the Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra and Esa-Pekka Salonen.

From the Verbier Festival, Debussy’s elegant Violin Sonata, performed by violinist Marc Bouchkov and pianist Julien Quentin, and from the Granada Festival, Ensemble InAlto and director Lambert Colson perform Monteverdi’s poignant Lamento d’Arianna, a masterpiece of early Baroque expression.

Behind Closed Doors

This week, Donald introduces us to the remarkable life story and unsung musical innovations of Hélène de Montgeroult.

There aren’t many composers who can claim that music saved their life – at least, in the literal sense. But for Hélène de Montgeroult, it was her astounding powers of improvisation that got her out of the stickiest situation imaginable, hauled in front of the guillotine during the French Revolution. This week, we’ll follow her rollercoaster tale and hear how she had her own revolutionary impact on the piano literature. Described as a precursor of Romanticism, anticipating the language of Schubert and Mendelssohn, audiences said her playing “made the keys speak”. She broke ground as the first female professor at the Paris Conservatoire and left behind 600 pages of music, including a complete course for piano which elevated the technical study into a miniature lyrical artform. As Donald pieces together her tantalising story, he’s joined by pianist Clare Hammond, who has spent recent years getting to know Montgeroult and recording an album of her études.

Today, Donald explores the twist and turns of Hélène’s private life, from her illegitimate son, who was possibly conceived in prison, to her three marriages and her not-so-secret affair with the Baron of Tremont. Also, Donald and Clare talk about how intimacy was central to her music-making, which mainly took place in private spheres.

Samuel Barber’s rarely heard Symphony No. 1 in One Movement marries the lyrical intensity of the composer’s beloved Adagio with taut structural drama. Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra from the BBC Proms

Today on Classical Live, there is another chance to hear Tuesday night’s prom from the Royal Albert Hall. Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony is performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel. And from the night before, we also hear Bartók’s exhilarating Concerto for Orchestra, with the Juilliard Orchestra and the Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen.

The programme also visits the Verbier Festival for Saint-Saëns’s sparkling Introduction and Rondo capriccioso, performed by violinist Marc Bouchkov and pianist Julien Quentin. And from the Granada Festival of Early Music, Odhecaton and conductor Paolo da Col perform Josquin des Prez’s radiant motet O bone et dulcissime Jesu.

With velvety vocals packing an emotional punch and songs straddling soul, Motown, gospel, R&B and funk, Marvin Gaye embraced a unique range spanning intimacy and protest, the physical and the spiritual. A pioneer of soul- baring songwriting, he has influenced countless artists, from Stevie Wonder and Prince to hip hop and rap artists. The BBC Concert Orchestra and Edwin Outwater, with special guest Luke James, pay tribute to a musical icon, joined by guest singers for new orchestral arrangements of hits Gaye recorded with close collaborator Tammi Terrell (such as 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'), as well as favourites including 'I Heard it Through the Grapevine', 'What's Going On' and 'Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing'.

Join Verity Sharp as she presents the fruits of our latest remote collaboration session with Greek singer Savina Yannatou meeting Indonesian composer Johanes "Mo’ong" Santoso Pribadi for some long-distance musical merrymaking.

Savina Yannatou is a Greek vocalist and composer whose work includes improvising early music, throat singing and free improvisation. Since 1993, Yannatou has worked with the group of Thessaloniki-based musicians Primavera en Salonico and has composed for the National Theatre of Greece and the Neos Kosmos Theater, amongst many others. Influenced initially by Montserrat Figueras and Joan Baez, she has collaborated with artists from Can’s Damo Suzuki and free jazz bassist Barry Guy to transdisciplinary artist Joana Sá.

Johanes "Mo’ong" Santoso Pribadi is a Lithuanian-based Indonesian-born composer and experimental artist. As well as being dedicated to the exploration of the traditional music of the Indonesian Archipelago, he also builds his own instruments from found objects and everyday items. He says, “it's also about decolonising oneself and the systems we live within. The standard is a legacy of imperialism. By building my own instruments, I want to establish my own standard." Mo’ong is also part of two collaborative projects: one of these is Raja Kirik, with Yennu Ariendra, whose sound is rooted in shamanic trance dance music, inspired by a Hindu-Buddhist-era dance from the 11th Century; the other project is Takkak Takkak, alongside Berlin-based Japanese producer Shigeru Ishihara (aka Scotch Rolex).
