Tom meets the dynamic Finnish conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali who leads London's Philharmonia Orchestra. Equally at home in Sibelius symphonies, foraging in the wild in his native Finland or bringing heavy metal to the classical music stage - Santtu is one of the world's most exciting musicians. He and Tom talk about his life in music and nature.

Tom also talks to the neuroscientist Elizabeth Margulis about musical daydreams. Elizabeth's new book uses cutting edge research to explore the vivid, and emotionally charged images, stories, and memories we lapse into while listening to music.

And our focus on Creators continues with the flautist and Creative Director of Aurora Orchestra, Jane Mitchell. Aurora's breathtaking 'by heart' concerts - where they perform a great work from memory - are always a highlight of the classical music year. Tom meets Jane at rehearsals for Mozart's Jupiter Symphony 'by heart' to talk about how she goes about creating new ways to present music.

1653, Paris. A marathon court spectacle is drawing to a close. As dawn breaks, a teenage boy dressed in gold steps onto the stage to dance the role of the rising sun: Louis XIV, King of France. In that moment, the 'Sun King' is born, and ballet becomes a powerful tool of royal authority.

From courtly spectacle to codified artform, this programme explores how Louis XIV uses music, dance and theatre to project absolute power. With the help of composer Jean-Baptiste Lully and a circle of artists at Versailles, ballet is transformed from aristocratic pastime into a professional discipline.

Gillian Moore is joined by a roster of distinguished historians for this major new BBC Radio 3 series, charting a course through 1000 years of classical music history. For the next eight programmes, historian Suzannah Lipscomb is in the chair, as together they travel from the late sixteenth to the early eighteenth century.

Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier

In tribute to the late soprano Dame Felicity Lott, another chance to hear her in one of her signature roles, the Marschallin, in a recording of Der Rosenkavalier from the Royal Opera House in 2004.

The Marschallin is deeply in love with her young lover Octavian, but knows that she's getting older, and one day he'll tire of her. Her fears are realised sooner than she thought when he presents a ceremonial silver rose to Sophie, and falls instantly in love with her. Strauss's opera Der Rosenkavalier contains comedy, pathos, and some truly beautiful writing for his female characters. In this 2004 production from the Royal Opera House, along with Felicity Lott as the Marschallin, Angelika Kirchschlager sings her lover Octavian and Simone Nold sings Sophie. Charles Mackerras conducts.

This week, Sarah Walker’s playlist takes in gardens, forests and wide open landscapes, with music inspired by the natural world and the changing seasons.

There’s French elegance from Mel Bonis, Beethoven’s much-loved Pastoral Symphony, and Percy Grainger’s irrepressible Country Gardens.

Sarah also heads to Renaissance Italy for this week’s Choral Reflection, with a motet by Palestrina sung by one of the UK’s most revered choral ensembles, The Tallis Scholars.

Elsewhere, there’s sunny Mozart with his Piano Concerto No. 23, while Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee buzzes into view ahead of the morning’s centrepiece: Tchaikovsky’s richly melodic ‘Little Russian’ Symphony.

Jeremy Vine, broadcaster

Jeremy Vine is one of the most familiar voices and faces in British broadcasting. He's presented his Radio 2 lunchtime show since 2003, and its mixture of music and news reaches 6 million listeners every week. Their personal stories and opinions are a vital part of the programme.

Jeremy also presents a weekday show on Channel 5, and since joining the BBC almost 40 years ago, he's been our correspondent in Africa and appeared on everything from Newsnight to Strictly Come Dancing.

He also writes crime fiction, drawing on his work behind the microphone. His books Murder on Line One and most recently Turn the Dial for Death feature the radio presenter Edward Temmis turning his hand to detective work.

Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No 2

It's the FIFA World Cup opening weekend, and Sara Mohr-Pietsch explores the pathways to one of football fanatic Dmitri Shostakovich's most celebrated works.

The Second Piano Concerto was composed as a 19th birthday present for his son Maxim, who was studying at Moscow Conservatory at the time. Shostakovich later confided to a friend that the piece had "no artistic value", yet the Concerto dazzles us with its quickfire action, all sunshine and fun. But the true gift is in the slow middle section: a gorgeously heartfelt meditation that has made the work a concert hall favourite.

En route, there are passes to Purcell and Fauré, and that most Russian of instruments, the balalaika. And just after half-time, Sara shakes a rattle to some footballing works that Shostakovich would have thoroughly supported.

Yet placed side by side, their works reveal striking continuities. Both were prodigies, both redefined instrumental writing, and both imbued their music with vitality that transcends their era.

In this concert, recorded at St Michael and All Angels Church in Blackheath as part of last autumn's London International Festival of Early Music, recorder virtuoso Erik Bosgraaf joins the Wroclaw Baroque Orchestra to bring Vivaldi's and Mozart's worlds into dialogue.

The Mysteries of Gwen John

During her lifetime, the Welsh artist Gwen John was overshadowed by the men around her - most notably her lover, the sculptor Auguste Rodin, and her brother, the painter Augustus John. Today, however, her story is being re-examined and redefined. Her reputation is soaring, her work is in demand across the world and her vision feels strikingly modern. Yet, when she was alive, she chose to live in the shadows – keeping the world at arm’s length.

There are two dominant images of Gwen John. The first stresses her daring: an artistic pioneer who took lovers of both sexes and moved to Paris when it was the centre of the art world. The second is a hermit who withdrew into a religious life, living alone with her cats. Her art is utterly confident, and yet she found exhibiting unbearable. She moved among the greatest artists of her time and yet deliberately avoided people.

In this programme, marking 150 years since her birth, poet Gwyneth Lewis explores the mysteries surrounding Gwen John’s life and work. She retraces Gwen’s path from Pembrokeshire in west Wales to London’s Slade School of Fine Art, and on to the bohemian circles of Paris.

Through readings from Gwen John’s letters and notebooks, and through her quietly powerful artworks, Gwyneth uncovers the story of a fiercely original artist – unconventional, overlooked, but now being understood on her own terms. Gwyneth also considers how a major new exhibition of Gwen John’s art at Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales in Cardiff informs our understanding of her.

Today, Gwen John is recognised as a pioneering artist, whose unwavering independence and introspective vision place her firmly at the heart of contemporary culture. Gwyneth goes in search of the real Gwen John - it’s a story that’s complex, compelling, and full of surprises.

You'll hear extracts from the diaries of Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn, and John Dryden's epic poem 1666, describing events from the reign of Charles II in England. On stage, battling husbands and wives were stock characters as theatres re-opened and drew in the crowds.

As Radio 3's series exploring the history of music Key Changes reaches the Restoration Court, Words and Music provides an accompanying selection of readings and music evoking the period from Rose Tremain's novel Restoration, Lucy M Boston's The Children of Green Knowe and Edward Bond's play Restoration. Our composers include Purcell and Blow, Michael Nyman’s film score for The Libertine which depicts the life of the poet courtier the Earl of Rochester, from the court of the Sun King in France, and from Vaughan Williams, inspired by Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. There were scientific discoveries both big and small, such as Halley’s Comet, and the use of microscopes by Robert Hooke and we'll hear words and music reflecting one of the great tragedies of the age, the Great Fire of London, and a celebration of women stepping on to the theatrical stage for the first time, including the famous Nell Gwyn.

He’s also the author of two books: the memoir ‘The Celestial Cafe’ and the novel ‘Nobody’s Empire’, inspired by his years living with ME and also by his love of singing in a choir.

Elsewhere in the programme, we'll hear from emerging independent producers whose work plays with orchestral textures and classical form as well as the latest sounds from a new generation of contemporary composers who look to embrace the spirit of rock, pop and electronica.

When Europe’s greatest composers fled from war and tyranny, they rebuilt their careers in the USA – singing of hope, loss and defiance from the shores of a new world. Korngold’s Violin Concerto finds the spirit of Vienna in the Hollywood Hills, while Bartók created an epic display of courage, sorrow and life-affirming brilliance in his dazzling Concerto for Orchestra.

Korngold’s concerto, in particular, is a perfect showcase for the award-winning Spanish violinist María Dueñas. “With her gorgeous sound – dense, warm and brilliant – and her immaculate technique, Dueñas is already at the top” wrote Bachtrack, and it’s hard to imagine a lovelier upbeat to Bartók’s roof-raising orchestral spectacular: a personal favourite of BBC Symphony Orchestra chief conductor Sakari Oramo.

Falling is a journey to the edge of sleep, where consciousness loosens its grip and the ordinary becomes strange. Guided by a witch, an anaesthetist and a professor of sleep, we drift towards unconsciousness and back again, lingering at the fragile threshold between awareness and oblivion.

Across its span, Mahler explores the full expressive range of the orchestra, drawing out both intimacy and intensity from life’s shifting experiences. In this performance, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Chief Conductor Domingo Hindoyan, bring their own distinctive interpretative voice to a work that remains inexhaustibly rich in meaning.

Mark Forrest brings you another afternoon of live music and specially recorded performances from around the UK. In today’s programme, there’s more from the Barber Series of Lunchtime Concerts at the University of Birmingham, featuring a Radio 3 New Generation Artist, the flautist Elizaveta Ivanova, with the world premiere of a brand new commission by Emily Hall.

Today's mixtape opens with nostalgic brass, melting into a Bach prelude arranged for percussion. The second half features some magical Mel Bonis, a Mozart string quintet and whimsical clarinet with orchestra. The mixtape closes with Copland's pastoral Down a Country Lane.

Aldeburgh Festival - Britten's Phaedra

In the second of its live concerts from this year’s Aldeburgh Festival, the Britten Sinfonia presents a programme inspired by the classics. Youthful Britten is marked by a radiant piece for piano and orchestra inspired by the image of Apollo and the same source provides the inspiration for one of Stravinsky’s most imaginative and finally honed ballet scores, Apollon musagète - Apollo, leader of the Muses. Also on the programme is one of John Woolrich’s best known pieces, Ulysses Awakes, a reworking of music by Monteverdi and mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston joining the orchestra for a performance of Britten’s cantata Phaedra. Aldeburgh Festival - Shostakovich's 10th Symphony

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Kevin John Edusei perform the first of two concerts at the Aldeburgh festival. Beginning with John Adams's rip-roaring Short Ride in a Fast Machine, the concert will be quickly transported to a world premiere by Tansy Davies; her percussion concerto, Earthworks. Davies wrote the work for star percussionist, Colin Currie, and it describes giant ancient land art and the terrain it inhabits. The concert concludes with Shostakovich's 10th Symphony, an immensely powerful work that contains some of the most devastating music that Shostakovich wrote.

In A Foot in Summer, Australian audio artist Sherre DeLys, her own summer behind her, travels to Mount Stilwell in the Snowy Mountains to chase the last of the summer light before it slips north. Listening to poet Mark Tredinnick read this alpine landscape, she learns to trust, as the snow gum does, that the seasons don't end so much as spill into one another.

Join Verity Sharp to ring in Radio 3’s ‘Midsummer Dreaming’, a night-long celebration of adventurous radio feature-making with an exclusive Midsummer mixtape from experimental composer and producer Iain Chambers.

Iain Chambers is a sound-artist, composer and producer, working across recorded music, site-specific installations and radio production. His work explores the potential of sound to unlock the musical potential of place, material, and memory through field recording, electronic composition, and sound design.

Iain’s mixtape presents a host of ear-bending sounds that capture the spirit of the longest day of the year.

Elsewhere in the show, there’s more celebrations of all things solar with Aho Ssan’s textural and poetic jazz inflections on ‘The Sun Turned Black’, and we’ll be hiding in the shade with the flowing, meditative tones on Memotone’s new project ‘Warm Shadows’.

Mike Westbrook in tribute

Tonight, Soweto pays tribute to the pianist, bandleader and composer Mike Westbrook, who sadly passed away on 11th April aged 90. Mike was one of the most significant figures in the history of British jazz, widely celebrated for his distinctive, genre-blurring sound and his ambitious large ensemble works.

His music drew on a wide range of influences, from classical traditions to literary figures such as William Blake and Bertolt Brecht. His adaptation of Gioachino Rossini's opera themes made history in 1991 as the first jazz work ever featured at the BBC Proms, performed in collaboration with his wife and artistic partner, Kate Westbrook.
