Bryan Ferry
Bryan Ferry has been a very familiar voice for more than 50 years, as the co-founder of Roxy Music and as a solo artist and songwriter.
When Roxy Music first appeared on Top of the Pops in 1972, millions of viewers suddenly saw something new: an extravagantly dressed band, featuring an early synthesizer, an oboe, and Bryan leading from an upright piano, wearing a sparkling black and green jacket. 'This one definitely arrived from Planet Mars', according to one critic. It was a performance which helped to propel Bryan to stardom, and a career which has produced two dozen studio albums, and numerous international hits, as well as explorations of jazz and the songs of Bob Dylan: his most recent release, Retrospective, includes a new version of Dylan’s 1965 song She Belongs to Me.
In conversation with Michael Berkeley, Bryan reflects on his early days in County Durham, the role of his art school education and his approach to song writing. His musical choices include works by Prokofiev, Elgar, Mahler and Charlie Parker.

Mountains
Grab your sensible shoes, lightweight layers and a flask of hot tea, for a trek up and down literary and musical mountains across the world. Siobhan Redmond and Tachia Newall are our readers.
We begin our hike In the Tatra Mountains, inspired by composer Vítězslav Novák’s own journeys in Eastern Europe, then try to find the way to Cold Mountain with mysterious Chinese poet Han Shan, traverse the light-struck plateau of the Cairngorms beside Nan Shepherd, and haiku master Basho chuckles at foggy rain hiding Mount Fuji.
We also take in Cape Town’s Table Mountain with Miriam Makeba, yodelling from Fritz Liechti and his family, bass-baritone Paul Robeson sings of England’s pleasant pastures and mountains green, and hear a Himalayan trekking song accompanied by the Pahari folk tale ‘A Monkey Objects to Criticism.’
We also explore the romance of craggy summits and stars with Keats, plus Annie Proulx’s tragic love story of Brokeback Mountain alongside the film’s soundtrack by Gustavo Santaolalla, Laurel and Hardy are pining for the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Bjork’s Hyperballad arranged for string quartet hurls belongings off the top of a mountain, and Erica Jong’s poem ‘Climbing You’ details a sour relationship akin to a doomed expedition.
Faced with falling talus from above, Robert Macfarlane’s ‘Mountains of the Mind: A History of a Fascination’ takes us to risky rambles up glaciers accompanied by Ferde Grofe’s Death Valley Suite, we also hear Edvard Grieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King alongside HP Lovecraft’s ‘Mountains of Madness’, and head to Middle-earth as hobbits Samwise and Frodo come face-to-face with the ominous Mount Doom.
Metaphorical mountains include Naomi Long Madgett’s powerful poem ‘Midway’ representing the racism she fought to overcome in the United States, heard alongside John Coltrane’s Alabama, widely believed to be a response to the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama on September 15th 1963. The nostalgic and unsettled quietude of Over the Hills and Far Away by Frederick Delius is interwoven with Elizabeth Bishop’s poem ‘The Mountain’, a reflection of the confusion and turmoil during the aging process as the world seems to change around you.

Fauré and Me
Gabriel Fauré died in the early hours of 4th November, 1924. A century later, in December 2024, the concert pianist Kathryn Stott will step down from the concert platform after a long and distinguished career. Fauré has been the musical love of her life.
In “Fauré and Me”, Kathryn celebrates the music of Fauré, with a personal look at the composer. She first discovered Fauré at the Yehudi Menuhin School where, at the age of 10, she had a lesson with the eminent pedagogue and composer Nadia Boulanger - a student and friend of Fauré. Since then, Kathryn has championed his music throughout her career, and has recorded all of his many works for piano.
Kathryn travels to France to follow in Fauré’s footsteps. She visits his birthplace in Pamiers, Ariège, and plays an old harmonium in the little chapel in Foix where, as a small boy, his musical talents were discovered. In stark contrast, she climbs up to the organ loft of La Madeleine, to duet with chief organist François-Henri Houbart in the magnificent church which witnessed both the first performance of Fauré's Requiem, and his State Funeral. And she takes a seat in the Grand Amphitheatre of La Sorbonne, describing very movingly the splendid tribute concert put on in Fauré’s honour in 1922.
Kathryn invites pianist and broadcaster Keelan Carew to the studio, to play moments from Fauré’s Nocturne no 6, and discuss the unique qualities of his music. And there are contributions from the leading Fauré scholar Jean-Michel Nectoux, and Kathryn’s great friend and colleague, cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Star
Compelling drama from Sarah Wooley about the making of the movie 'A Star Is Born', Judy Garland's 1950s comeback bid.
1952. Judy Garland, let go by MGM for her erratic behaviour, is determined to make a comeback. She and soon-to-be husband Sid Luft start their own production company and get the rights to remake classic 30s film 'A Star Is Born' as a musical. This time, they will be in control.
Who better to write the music than Judy's lifelong friend Harold Arlen, the composer of her biggest hit 'Over the Rainbow'? Arlen was responsible for some of the most famous songs in the world: 'It's Only a Paper Moon', 'Stormy Weather', 'That Old Black Magic' - he sound-tracked the first half of the twentieth century. He recruits Ira Gershwin to write the lyrics and everyone gets to work.
But Judy's demons are never far away, and everyone has underestimated the power of the Hollywood machine...
This is a story about love, friendship and struggle, set against the backdrop of McCarthy's America, where loyalty has become a complicated thing and compassion is in short supply.

Autobahn at 50 - Kraftwerk’s Classical Roots
Released on 1 November 1974, Autobahn was the album that marked the moment when Kraftwerk fully embraced electronic pop music and honed the futuristic, mechanized aesthetic that would become famous. The record was an international success in spite of some decidedly mixed early reviews; and its influence has been felt across a wide variety of genres in the half century since.
Herself a visitor of the band’s iconic Kling Klang studios in Düsseldorf, Elizabeth Alker considers Kraftwerk’s classical roots, placing the album in the context of Twentieth-Century German Classical Music (the musicians themselves have cited the expressionism of Schönberg and Stockhausen’s experiments with sound as key influences.) And, as can be heard in the iconic title track, which unfolds over twenty minutes, the band were borrowing from traditions of structuring music that harken back to older, classical forms, too (in the bringing back and development of themes). Elizabeth also plays contemporary tracks that share a musical kinship with Autobahn, and owe it too, perhaps, a debt of gratitude.

Waltz
Donald Macleod takes a whirl around the world through the music of ballroom dancing, as we count down to BBC Radio 3’s Day of Dance on Friday 8th November. With the help of Hilary French, author of Ballroom: A People’s History of Dancing, Donald waltzes across Viennese ballrooms, foxtrots through New York clubs, tries the tango in the arrabales of Buenos Aires, sambas on the streets of Salvador and finally cha-cha-chas his way to Havana.
Today, we begin in 18th-century Vienna, with the emergence of a very scandalous peasants’ dance: the waltz.

Symphonic Storytellers: Anna Sułkowska-Migoń conducts the Ulster Orchestra
Kathy Clugston introduces a colourful programme of Symphonic Storytellers from the Ulster Hall in Belfast. The Ulster Orchestra is conducted by Anna Sułkowska-Migoń - first prize winner at the La Maestra conducting competition in Paris in March 2022.
Its curtain-up with Lutosławski's Little Suite for Orchestra. It was originally written for chamber orchestra in 1950, in response to a commission from Radio Warsaw. It specialised in popular repertoire and the piece, based on folk melodies from the Rzeszów region of southern Poland, quickly gained interest. It was revised and extended for symphony orchestra the following year.
Shostakovich wrote his Piano Concerto No.1 in C minor for Piano, Trumpet, and Strings in 1933, aged 27, as a graduation piece. He had intended to write a trumpet concerto for the Principal Trumpet of the Leningrad Philharmonic, but keen to showcase his own talents as a pianist, he added more and more piano, until it eventually took centre stage. It is full of humour, parody and musical quotes. The soloists in this performance are the internationally acclaimed concert pianist Barry Douglas and Niall Keatley, Principal Trumpet of the BBC Symphony Orchestra - both from Northern Ireland.
Staying with Russia, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherezade rounds off the concert in style. Inspired by the tales of The Arabian Nights, the composer described it as “a kaleidoscope of fairy-tale images” scattered through four movements. Here the solo violin represents Scheherezade himself, with the trombones and basses portraying the cruel Sultan.
During the interval Kathy speaks with Barry Douglas, incorporating a track from his album latest release.

From Biltong to Bobotie - Journeys in South African Cuisine
Black South African Cuisine
Writer and broadcaster Lindsay Johns explores the food of South Africa.
South African cuisine is as varied as South Africa itself, and in this set of Essays, Lindsay will delve into the foods of the Rainbow Nation for five personal and lyrical ruminations on what these foods evoke for him. Each Essay - covering one of South Africa's racial groups - offers distinct memories of different aspects of his many experiences in South Africa. We'll sample the different cuisines, and experience these nuanced and complex communities through Lindsay's eyes, ears, and taste buds.
For his first Essay, Lindsay invites listeners to join him as he samples the cuisine of South Africa’s Xhosa and Zulu township communities – smiley (a boiled sheep’s head in a drum), amangina (chicken, cow, pig, lamb and sheep’s feet served with hot sauce), and pap – a cornmeal porridge so popular it appears on the menu at South African branches of KFC. Lindsay says it does what it ought to do - "placate the belly and nourish the soul."

We'll hear, too, about the importance of the braai, and about the central place of meat in white South African cuisine. But as Lindsay chews this all over, he mulls an important question: for many years this cuisine was seen as the ‘Oppressors’ food’ – so should he still be reluctant to eat it?

Tango
Donald Macleod takes a whirl around the world through the music of ballroom dancing, as we count down to BBC Radio 3’s Day of Dance on Friday 8th November. With the help of Hilary French, author of Ballroom: A People’s History of Dancing, Donald waltzes across Viennese ballrooms, foxtrots through New York clubs, tries the tango in the arrabales of Buenos Aires, sambas on the streets of Salvador and finally cha-cha-chas his way to Havana.
Today, we travel to the arrabales of rural Argentina, a cultural melting pot where African rhythms are combined with Spanish melodies and Italian harmonies, and the tango is born.

From Biltong to Bobotie - Journeys in South African Cuisine
Coloured South African Food
Writer and broadcaster Lindsay Johns explores the food of South Africa.
South African cuisine is as varied as South Africa itself, and in this set of Essays, Lindsay will delve into the foods of the Rainbow Nation for five personal and lyrical ruminations on what these foods evoke for him. Each Essay - covering one of South Africa's racial groups - offers distinct memories of different aspects of his many experiences in South Africa. We'll sample the different cuisines, and experience these nuanced and complex communities through Lindsay's eyes, ears, and taste buds.
For his third Essay, Lindsay will describe the cuisine he knows, and loves, the best: Cape Coloured cuisine. We'll learn about snoek (barracuda), pickled fish, mince and cabbage stew and the Gatsby steak sandwich. It is, he says, the quintessential poor man’s fusion cuisine - and the most under-rated and overlooked food in the whole country.

Mozart, Britten and Schumann
In the middle of the 20th century composers Benjamin Britten and Witold Lutosławski were kindred creative spirits. Each crafted ravishing songs for the tenor voice of Peter Pears. In tonight's concert a great singer of our times, Mark Padmore, steps into his shoes to perform two song-cycles at the heart of a typically imaginative programme from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra's chief conductor Ryan Wigglesworth. Mozart opens the evening in a blaze of sunlight, and Schumann’s most personal symphony brings it to a close: strong emotions, spoken with love.

Born at a time when Indian restaurateurs were prevented by law from serving food to black workers - the dish was served surreptitiously so that passing police forces would see only a loaf of bread - today it is a national staple.

Ballroom Blockbusters
Cha-cha-cha
Donald Macleod takes a whirl around the world through the music of ballroom dancing, in celebration of BBC Radio 3’s Day of Dance on Friday 8th November. With the help of Hilary French, author of Ballroom: A People’s History of Dancing, Donald waltzes across Viennese ballrooms, foxtrots through New York clubs, tries the tango in the arrabales of Buenos Aires, sambas on the streets of Salvador and finally cha-cha-cha’s his way to Havana.
In today's final instalment, Donald takes to the clubs of Cuba to learn how the danzón-mambo evolved into the most recognisable rhythm in ballroom dance: two, three, cha-cha-chà.

From Biltong to Bobotie - Journeys in South African Cuisine
Cape Malay South African Cuisine
Writer and broadcaster Lindsay Johns completes his exploration of South African food, as he discusses the national dish, and what it says about the Rainbow Nation.
South African cuisine is as varied as South Africa itself, and in this set of Essays, Lindsay has delved into its different cuisines for five personal and lyrical ruminations on what these foods evoke for him. Each Essay - covering one of South Africa's racial groups - offers distinct memories of different aspects of his many experiences in South Africa. We'll sample the different cuisines, and experience these nuanced and complex communities through Lindsay's eyes, ears, and taste buds.
In today's final Essay, Lindsay strolls through the picture postcard community of Bo-Kaap in Cape Town, on his way to eat a personal favourite - tomato bredie. His lunch companion, meanwhile, orders bobotie - a meal which originated in the country's Cape Malay community but has now become the national dish. And as he reflects on the series, Lindsay wonders what this development says about finding a balance between acknowledging South Africa's troubling past and making a future together.

FRI 22:00 Late Junction (m0024dyl)
Dancing with Boss Morris
Radio 3’s Day of Dance keeps things moving to the very end, as Verity Sharp puts her best foot forward for a Late Junction Morris dancing session in Stroud. There, amongst the clank of sticks and the jingle of ankle bells, we hear from Boss Morris, a female folk collective who seek to transform the tradition of Morris dancing for the modern era. We hear how they navigate the thorny history of folk dance traditions, explore what it might mean to be ‘English’, and look to bring the form to wider, more inclusive audiences.
Elsewhere in the show, Verity brings the Day of Dance to a euphoric close with a mix of adventurous tracks from across the globe. You are invited to swoon to a languid foot-stomping accordion number from Ireland’s County Sligo and slow dance to the artisanal battente guitar melodies of a peasant collective from Puglia. Plus, we step into the club for some rugged electronic experiments from Berlin-based Debmaster (featuring fiery rap from Uganda’s MC Yallah) and dance the night away with a rapturous, polyrhythmic cascade of drum beats and samples from Chicago’s finest footwork master, RP Boo.
