SAT 13:00 Music Matters (m0023dzd)
Music on the Front Line

Janine di Giovanni

Clive Myrie is in conversation with fellow journalists about the music they’ve heard whilst reporting from the front line. With his own extensive experience of covering wars, and his personal love of opera and jazz, Clive and Janine di Giovanni share stories to reveal something of the power and significance of music when working in extreme conflict situations.

Janine is a multi-award-winning journalist who reported stories of conflicts around the globe for nearly 30 years - the siege of Sarajevo; the Rwandan genocide; the brutal wars in Sierra Leone, Somalia, Ivory Coast and Liberia to Chechnya, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Gaza. Janine founded and directs The Reckoning Project, a transitional justice organization training Ukrainian researchers to gather legally admissible testimonies documenting war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Here she recalls the music that’s accompanied her working life: Schumann’s Kinderszenen with orphaned children in Sarajevo; the final movement of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata expressed the madness of war she experienced in Serbia; and Barber’s Adagio for Strings accompanied her when she encountered a house full of abandoned blind people after the fall of Grozny in Chechnya.

I’d Love to Change the World by Ten Years After.

Schumann’s Kinderszenen (Träumerei and Kind im Einschlummern) played by Vladimir Horowitz.

3rd Movement of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata played by Daniel Barenboim.

Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Leonard Slatkin conducting the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

Moon River by Johnny Mercer & Henry Mancini performed by Frank Ocean.

Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit by Bach arranged by György Kurtág, played by György and Márta Kurtág.

Final movement Mahler’s 9th Symphony, Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

SAT 14:00 Record Review (m0023dzg)
Brahms Symphony No. 1 in Building a Library with Katy Hamilton & Andrew McGregor

Andrew McGregor with the best new recordings of classical music.

1405
Jeremy Sams shares his choice of some of the most exciting new classical releases.

1500
Building a Library

Katy Hamilton selects her favourite version of Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68.

Like so many composers in the post-Beethovenian Austro-German world, Brahms struggled with what a symphony should be and it wasn't until he was 43, with two orchestral serenades and a symphony-turned-piano-concerto under his belt that he managed to complete his first. On the surface, the First Symphony's C minor-to-major, darkness-to-light journey (and a tune in the last movement which, as Brahms put it, 'any idiot could see' was a near quote of the Ode to Joy) might seem freighted with Beethoven's pervasive influence. But this compelling music is suffused with the spirit and sound-world of late 19th century Romanticism and marks the beginning of another exceptional symphonic cycle.

1545
Record of the Week: Andrew’s top pick.

SAT 18:00 Opera on 3 (m0023dzn)
Richard Strauss's Capriccio

Andrew McGregor presents Richard Strauss's Capriccio from the 2024 Salzburg Festival, starring soprano Elsa Dreisig and baritone Bo Skovhus and conducted by Christian Thielemann.

Capriccio, Strauss's final work for the stage, circles around a problem that is as old as the genre of opera itself: the relationship between words and music. Set in Paris around 1775, the plot combines an aesthetic debate with the romantic rivalry between the poet Olivier and the musician Flamand, who are both wooing Countess Madeleine. Strauss regarded this highly original work as his final operatic testament. When the conductor Clemens Krauss, co-author of the libretto, mooted the possibility of a subsequent collaboration with Strauss, the composer pointed to the Countess's famous monologue which is preceded by the hauntingly beautiful Moonlight Music: "Isn’t this D flat major the best conclusion to my theatrical life-work?"

Andrew is joined by soprano Elsa Dreisig to talk about singing the role of The Countess.

Jenny Beavan

The costume designer Jenny Beavan has won three Academy Awards for three very different films: the elegant Merchant Ivory drama Room with a View; the post-apocalyptic Mad Max: Fury Road; and most recently the Disney film Cruella, for which she created a huge, vibrant parade of 1970s-inspired fashion.

She’s received a further nine Oscar nominations across her 40 year career. She found just the right top hat for Colin Firth in the King’s Speech and ditched the deerstalker in favour of a bowler for Robert Downey Jr in Sherlock Holmes. And despite claiming she has “never been interested in fashion”, she re-created striking Dior outfits for Mrs Harris Goes to Paris.

Jenny's music choices include Handel, Mendelssohn, Sondheim and - with a nod to the film the King's Speech - Beethoven.

SUN 18:00 Words and Music (m0023gvq)
Rescue at Sea

Evocations of seascapes lie behind some of the loveliest music and writing ever made and this programme, in honour of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution's 200-year history, looks to the full range of encounters with the waves. We will hear the imagined words of children planning sea adventure in Michael Morpurgo and Eva Ibbotson, the terrifying descriptions of cliff-like waves in Sebastian Junger’s The Perfect Storm, The Shipping News from E Annie Proulx , swashbuckling tales from Patrick O’Brian and tales of trade in the Horn of Africa from Abdulrazak Gurnah. We will hear the Irish RNLI lifeboat helm and poet Eleanor Hooker's poem Float to Live and more. All of these are accompanied by sea-inspired music – orchestral pieces from the likes of Peter Maxwell Davies, that come close to aural metaphor for the ocean itself to sea shanties and traditional sea hymns giving thanks for rescue. We will journey out hopeful, encounter a sudden storm, face disaster, rescue and return to port as seasoned sea dogs. The readers are Carla Henry, Josh Bryant Jones and Blue Lights actor Martin McCann.

SUN 19:15 Sunday Feature (m0023gvs)
Ishmael Reed - American Trickster

Ishmael Reed is a true polymath - a writer, public intellectual, publisher, musician and activist. In this Sunday Feature, Lindsay Johns travels to Oakland, California to meet this American polymath in the place which has shaped his thinking, as the two discuss Reed's work, and his ideas.

As they move around the city, Lindsay discovers the roots of Reed's iconoclasm, which has led him to challenge positions across the political spectrum; his extraordinary work ethic; and his wish to broaden the range of writers who get to tell their own stories. They'll discuss Reed's literary activism, the impact of meeting Malcolm X on his own life, and why being a famous writer may have saved him being harmed by the local crack dealers.

Lindsay will speak to those closest to Reed, and join him as he records new music - aged 86. What he finds is that Reed is the true American Trickster - always on the move, always challenging, always fascinating.

The Seagull is a collaboration between actor/writer Katherine Tozer and composer John Chambers whose versions of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard and Ivanov were premiered on BBC Radio 3 in 2018 and in September 2024 respectively. They also work together for PALIMPSEST, the innovative multi-media theatre company.

Chekhov's theatre play was written in 1895, and is regarded as one of his four major works for the stage, despite a famously disastrous first production in St Petersburg. Two years later it was revived by the ground breaking Moscow Art Theatre where it was greeted with unanimous acclaim.

MON 16:00 Composer of the Week (m0023f73)
Dorothy Howell (1898-1982)

The English Strauss

This week Donald Macleod is joined by the award-winning author Leah Broad to explore the story of the British composer Dorothy Howell, who shot to fame aged 21 after the triumphant premiere of her orchestral work ‘Lamia’ at the Proms. By the mid-1920s she was regarded as one of the leading women composers of the day, performing in prestigious venues across the UK and regularly appearing on radio programmes in the earliest days of broadcasting. But she faced challenges from the 1930s onwards that left her disillusioned, and by the end of her life she wanted to destroy all but a handful of her works. Luckily family intervened, but even so Howell’s music almost disappeared from view - until recently.

In the first of this week’s programmes, Donald Macleod looks with Leah Broad at how Howell rose to fame with ‘Lamia’, an orchestral work that was premiered at the Proms in 1919 to a rapturous reception, and the experiences that shaped the piece.

MON 21:45 The Essay (m001j4t4)
Walking the Causeways

Patrick Gale

There are 43 tidal islands around the UK, accessible just briefly each day, along beguiling and perilous paths.

As the tide retreats, five writers walk their favourite causeway to islands of refuge, pilgrimage, magic and glamour.

Patrick Gale joins those seemingly walking on water as they cross to St Michael’s Mount in this first episode. Between kite surfers and dog walkers, he is suspended between two worlds as he follows the S shaped causeway, shaped by relentless tides and currents. He is joined by Lord St Leven who tells him about the near impossible task of maintaining the route to the Mount, his family’s home since the 17th century. And from the tidal walk emerge the stories and myths that have built up around Karrek Loos yn Koos, first visited by Archangel Michael, and now by hundreds of thousands of tourists.

Across the series:
Evie Wyld retraces a childhood walk across the Freshwater Causeway on the Isle of Wight, finding graveyards and ghost benches.
Claire McGowan sees time change as she enters the freezing waters off Burgh Island and sips cocktails in the art deco hotel bar.
Ben Cottam almost gets stuck in the mud as he searches for the grave of a black slave and questions his family’s past at Sunderland Point.
And WN Herbert follows in the footsteps of pilgrims to Lindisfarne.

As sea levels rise and the sands shift, causeways are in flux. The Essayists draw us down onto the sands, revealing what these liminal routes mean to both them and the cultural history of the UK.

Producer: Sarah Bowen

TUE 16:00 Composer of the Week (m0023fxw)
Dorothy Howell (1898-1982)

Next Moves

At a turning point in her career, Howell wrote the score for a ballet which had all the right ingredients for a huge success, and should have capitalised on the success of Lamia at the Proms. The young composer’s self-confidence was badly affected by hostile reviews, but through the ballet she made contact with Ethel Smyth, who became a mentor.

Taking inspiration from Zoe Gilbert’s novel 'Folk' and drawing on Scottish, Irish and Manx folklores, she creates an extraordinary song-cycle for soprano and orchestra, performed by Claire Booth.

TUE 21:45 The Essay (m001j4mw)
Walking the Causeways

Evie Wyld

There are 43 tidal islands around the UK, accessible just briefly each day, along beguiling and perilous paths.

As the tide retreats, five writers walk their favourite causeway to islands of refuge, pilgrimage, magic and glamour.

Today, Evie Wyld boards the ferry at Lymington pier and retraces a path well-travelled with her family during school holidays - across the Freshwater Causeway on the Isle of Wight. Her route takes her past ghost benches, a graveyard, World War Two pill boxes on a journey through grief, memory and what survives the tide.

Across the series:

Claire McGowan sees time change as she enters the freezing waters off Burgh Island and sips cocktails in the art deco hotel bar.

Ben Cottam almost gets stuck in the mud as he searches for the grave of a black slave and questions his family’s past at Sunderland Point.

WN Herbert follows in the footsteps of pilgrims to Lindisfarne and reflects on the causeway leading to a meditational space.

And between kite surfers and dog walkers, Patrick Gale is suspended between two worlds as he follows the S shaped causeway, shaped by relentless tides and currents to St Michael’s Mount.

As sea levels rise and the sands shift, causeways are in flux. The essayists draw us down onto the sands, revealing what these liminal routes mean to both them and the cultural history of the UK.

Walking the Causeways

Claire McGowan

Claire McGowan enters the freezing waters off Burgh Island, connected at low tide to the mainland by a short sandy causeway.

There are 43 tidal islands around the UK, accessible just briefly each day along beguiling and perilous paths. Across the series, five writers walk their favourite causeway to islands of refuge, pilgrimage, magic and glamour.

Claire grew up with the mythology of the giant Finn McCool flinging rocks at a rival in Scotland and building the Giant’s Causeway. Arriving at Burgh Island, she steps into tranquil 1920s glamour, to sip Agatha Christie inspired cocktails in the Art Deco hotel bar. In this time capsule, Claire explores our relationship with Golden Age Crime and her own past; as the tide retreats, past relationships disappear with the waves and time simultaneously changes and stays still.

Dorothy Howell (1898-1982)

Traveller

Today Donald Macleod and Leah Broad look at why the 1930s brought challenging times for Howell. With dwindling radio broadcasts and fewer performances of her work, she moved out of London to be with her mother. Travelling abroad always provided inspiration for new works, and the time she spent in Egypt helped her to realise what was most important to her: God, music and her family.

Brahms Piano Concerto No 1 and Piano Quartet

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales are joined by their Principal Conductor, Ryan Bancroft, and pianist, Sir Stephen Hough, for two of Brahms's most popular pieces. To begin, Sir Stephen is soloist in the great D minor Piano Concerto, an intense work which Hough has described as full of grandeur, excitement, and youthful flare. After the interval, we will be delighted with Schoenberg's orchestration of Brahms's Piano Quartet. It's a work that Schoenberg loved in its original form, but found that the piano often overpowered the strings in performance, and so chose to rework it for orchestra, sticking, for the most part at least, to what Brahms himself might have written.

Presented by Ian Skelly in Swansea's Brangwyn Hall on the 3rd of October.

Walking the Causeways

WN Herbert

There are 43 tidal islands around the UK, accessible just briefly each day, along beguiling and perilous paths.

As the tide retreats, five writers walk their favourite causeway to islands of refuge, pilgrimage, magic and glamour.

Today, WN Herbert follows in the footsteps of pilgrims to Lindisfarne and reflects on the causeway connecting to a meditational space and how we are all now connected by various versions of a tidal causeway, advancing and retreating through social media.

And between kite surfers and dog walkers, Patrick Gale is suspended between two worlds as he follows the S shaped causeway, shaped by relentless tides and currents to St Michael’s Mount.

Evie Wyld boards the ferry at Lymington pier and retraces a path well-travelled in her childhood -the Western Yar on the Isle of Wight.

As sea levels rise and the sands shift, causeways are in flux. The essayists draw us down onto the sands, revealing what these liminal routes mean to both them and the cultural history of the UK.

Ben Cottam

Ben Cottam puts on full waterproofs to cross the causeway to Sunderland Point, in search of the grave of a black slave.

There are 43 tidal islands around the UK, accessible just briefly each day along beguiling paths. Across the series, five writers journey across a favourite causeway to islands of refuge, pilgrimage, magic and glamour.

Wheels spin wildly and Ben peers anxiously through mud-sprayed windscreen as he tries to drive to Sunderland. There is no real boundary between land and sea, the coastline as fluid as the tide. The danger signs escalate and he remembers tales of insidious rising waters, drilled into him as a child by coastguards from Morecambe Bay.

He treks to what is uncomfortably called Sambo’s grave, the resting place of young black slave. Abandoned there by a sea captain in the 18th century, Ben wonders how his own family might have treated him and is heartened to find fresh tributes marking a lost life.

FRI 22:00 Late Junction (m0023f8n)
A Surrealist Mixtape from Slauson Malone 1

This month marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of a pair of surrealist manifestos. In Paris, a century ago, two rival groups - led in turn by Yvan Goll and André Breton - were looking to the language and visuals of dreams and the subconscious to find artistic freedom. For Breton, the quest for art and culture was to “find absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern.” Here at Late Junction, we’ve set our minds (and drooping clocks) back to this landmark moment to explore the effect Surrealism has had on music, and to explore where a new generation of sound-makers might use its influence to take us next.

To headline the bill, musician and visual artist Slauson Malone 1 (aka Jasper Marsalis) shares a mixtape embodying what Surrealism means to him. Marsalis’ practice sits at the intersection of - and explores the blurry line between - art, music and performance. Pairing dreamy, textural, and genre-bending soundscapes with a personal and at times confrontational performance style, Marsalis’ work attempts to break the barrier between audience and performer. In the style of the Surrealists, the mixtape forms an ‘Exquisite Corpse’ of conflicting sounds and influences.
