Contemporary composers and orchestra are queuing up to write for him, but he's spent the last year alone on the podium, playing and recording only one piece 88 times - Bach's Goldberg Variations. 5. Deep Listening
Nicola Benedetti, Director of the Edinburgh International Festival, explores the past and present of this annual occasion, now in its 77th year.

Nicola celebrates the incredible roll call of instrumentalists and singers whose international careers brought them to Edinburgh, from Kathleen Ferrier and Anne Sofie Von Otter to Jonas Kaufmann and Sheku Kanneh-Mason, before reflecting on what it means to really listen deeply. With contributions from opera singer Danielle de Niese, conductor Ivan Fischer and jazz bassist Endea Owens.

INTERVAL: The Listening Service
Tom Service examines the cultural significance of Smetana’s six-part orchestral masterpiece, exploring the poetry and politics of a piece deeply embedded in the Czech national consciousness. Berliner Philharmoniker
Kirill Petrenko (conductor)
The first of the Berliner Philharmoniker’s two Proms this season comprises a pair of musical love letters. One is to a person: Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto was written for his wife Clara (whose own concerto is performed on the First Night). It’s a work whose supple and sensual music offers touching insights into one of the most passionate musical romances of the 19th century. The other was written to a country. In Má vlast Bedřich Smetana – one of this year’s Czech anniversary composers, born 200 years ago – transferred all his love for his Bohemian homeland into a majestic sequence of six symphonic poems: pictures of his country’s landscape and history. With the exceptional pianist Víkingur Ólafsson for company, Kirill Petrenko conducts his illustrious orchestra in music that comes straight from the heart.

Neuroscience into art - Sarah Hennies' Motor Tapes
Kate Molleson introduces some of the latest sounds in New Music including the premieres of New York composer Sarah Hennies's Motor Tapes and Alex Paxton's Ody Pink'd.
Sarah Hennies learned about a neurological theory called “motor tapes” from Oliver Sacks’ book Musicophilia, and the concept stuck with her for years. The theory comes from neuroscientist Rodolfo Llinás, who posited that many of our thoughts, memories, and physical movements operate via a series of “looping tapes,” with the goal of reducing the amount of energy the brain uses while doing common, repetitive tasks. Llinás’ theory fitted with the way Sarah Hennies experienced her own memories and the evolution of her identity and her fifty five minute long “Motor Tapes” premiered in Darmstadt by Ensemble Dedalus is the result.
Also, the late John White's Concertino for Bass Clarinet and String Trio and tracks from Primitive Percussion Youth Orchestra's recent release, "We demand...everything now!"

Raynor Winn
Raynor Winn is a writer whose first book, The Salt Path, followed the remarkable 630-mile journey she and her husband Moth made around the South West Coastal Path.
It was a story of endurance as they had lost their home, had little money and Moth had been diagnosed with a terminal illness. But they found solace in nature and kept putting one foot in front of the other, living for the now: a message that obviously chimed with readers, as the book became a bestseller and is currently being made into a film.
Raynor has since written a sequel called The Wild Silence, about readjusting to four walls and normal life after that seminal walk, and Landlines where she and Moth again embark on a thousand-mile journey from Scotland back to the familiar shores of the South West Coast Path.
Raynor's musical choices include works by Britten, Schubert and Vaughan Williams.

Henry Mancini
An immersive dive into the life and music of one of the greatest film music composers of all time: Henry Mancini, who was born 100 years ago this year.
Mancini is one of the great icons of film music. His scores for movies like Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Pink Panther or TV shows like Peter Gunn, not only brought him Academy Awards and a glittering career, but featured songs and themes that have become instantly hummable classics in their own right away from the screen.
Alongside these seminal hits like Moon River or Days of Wine and Roses, and a reputation for 'cool jazz' Mancini was actually one of the most versatile composers in Hollywood. He pushed the artform in new directions and inspired some of the biggest names in film music today, from John Williams to Quincy Jones.
This programme tells Henry Mancini's story from his early life as the son of Italian immigrants in Pittsburgh where he was first handed a flute by his father, through his years as a musician in the Big Bands, learning the film trade at Universal Pictures, and eventually to composing some of the most recognisable music on film.
With recordings of Mancini himself from the BBC Archives, we also hear from his daughter Monica Mancini and son in law Gregg Field, both professional jazz musicians, film historian Jon Burlingame and pianist Tom Poster.

Prom 56: Bruckner’s Fifth Symphony with Berliner Philharmoniker
Live at the BBC Proms: Kirill Petrenko conducts Berliner Philharmoniker in Bruckner’s epic Fifth Symphony and the BBC Singers, conducted by Owain Park, perform Bruckner motets.

Anton Bruckner:
Os justi
Locus iste
Christus factus est
Symphony No. 5 in B flat major
BBC Singers
Owain Park (conductor)
Berliner Philharmoniker
Kirill Petrenko (conductor)
Poor, homesick and misunderstood, Anton Bruckner plunged into despair during the winter of 1875. From the depths of his anguish came astonishing proof of his triumph of will: the composer’s spirited Symphony No. 5. For their second night at the BBC Proms, Kirill Petrenko and the Berliner Philharmoniker fill the Royal Albert Hall with a work designed on no less grand a scale. Here the sternness and warmth of the composer’s four movements make for a majestic whole, concluding with one of the most overwhelming denouements in all music. Before it, the BBC Singers, celebrating its centenary this year, offers the most sublime of palate cleansers: three of Bruckner’s most radiant motets, inspiring testaments to the faith that kept his creative flame alive.

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896)
For the Glory of God
Donald Macleod examines how Bruckner’s character was forged through his strict religious upbringing.
From our modern perspective, it can be difficult to appreciate why it took so long for Anton Bruckner to be recognised as one of the leading musical voices of the 19th century. His spectacular symphonies regularly pack out concert halls today, but his own era took many decades to warm to his music. Only in his sixties did Bruckner begin to achieve the popularity he deserved and, even then, he retained a reputation as a bit of an oddball. Colleagues were disturbed by his unsophisticated manners, unquestioning religious devotion and peculiar personal habits. His tendency to see enemies all around regularly tested his relationships. His romantic choices were routinely disastrous.
This week, Donald Macleod marks the 200th anniversary of Bruckner’s birth by examining Bruckner’s lifelong struggle to become the great composer we know today.
Today, Donald looks at Bruckner’s early career at the Abbey of St Florian in Upper Austria and how it nurtured within him obedience, humility and an all-consuming faith.

Henry Mancini was more than one of the greatest composers in the history of film music. He was also one of the most versatile musicians of his or any time. Marking a century since the flautist, composer and conductor’s birth in Ohio, Edwin Outwater and the BBC Concert Orchestra celebrate the man and his music in styles ranging from jazz to light classical and film music. Among the classics are the slinky ‘Lujon’ and themes from The Pink Panther and Peter Gunn, joined by gems from the lounge music and space-age pop genres Mancini helped inspire, including easy-going tracks by Burt Bacharach, Les Baxter and Juan García Esquivel.

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896)
Passions and Preoccupations
Donald Macleod uncovers how Bruckner’s musical ambitions were threatened by his fragile mental health.
Today, Donald examines how Bruckner’s obsessive nature drove him into an intensive study of music theory before plunging into work on his radical first symphony. But his compulsions were also sending him careering towards a dangerous mental breakdown.

Few orchestras know Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique better than the Orchestre de Paris - Philharmonie, which performed the work at its very first concert in 1967 and has done so at every significant milestone in its history ever since. Here France’s most illustrious orchestra visits the Proms with its renowned Chief Conductor Klaus Mäkelä for a mouth-watering programme that indulges all the beauty, delicacy and emotion of French music while marking another of the most thrilling scores ever to have come out of Paris: Stravinsky’s tuneful and mischievous puppet-show ballet, Petrushka.

Friends and Enemies
Donald Macleod follows Bruckner to Vienna, where he finds friends who encourage him but also vicious detractors.
From our modern perspective, it can be difficult to appreciate why it took so long for Anton Bruckner to be recognised as one of the leading musical voices of the 19th century. His spectacular symphonies regularly pack out concert halls today, but his own era took many decades to warm to his music. This week, Donald Macleod marks the 200th anniversary of Bruckner’s birth by examining Bruckner’s lifelong struggle to become the great composer we know today.
Today, Bruckner moves to Vienna, one of the great musical centres of Europe, but he finds a distinctly mixed reception there, for his music. When the city’s leading critics discover Bruckner’s devotion to the arch-modernist, Richard Wagner, they become actively hostile.

The twin peaks of tonight’s all-French programme are two masterpieces from Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Ravel, beginning with the former’s consolatory Requiem, a work whose clean lines, pure vocal textures and elegant orchestrations appear to propose a new philosophy of religion. Prepare for temperatures to rise with the sensual awakenings and sultry dances of Ravel’s suite for the ballet Daphnis and Chloe, evoking an ancient world of pastoral delights. Two prayers by Lili Boulanger, who died tragically young at 24, and Fauré’s incidental music written for a London production of Maeterlinck’s Symbolist play Pelleas and Melisande complete the evening.

William Blake’s great poem pitting childlike wonder and naivety against adult maturity and experience, Auguries of Innocence, contains the resonant line ‘eternity in an hour’. Eric Whitacre, whose apparently weightless music is often said to stop time, takes that line as the title for his Proms commission, receiving its world premiere at this Late Night Prom. Expect shimmering beauty and heavenly harmonies as Whitacre himself conducts the BBC Singers and an ensemble of strings, piano and electronics.

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896)
Friends and Champions
Bruckner pins his hopes on a new symphony and new supporters. With Donald Macleod.
Today, Donald finds Bruckner in a paroxysm of ‘revision fever’ as he’s driven to revisit and rework his earlier works following the disastrous premiere of his third symphony. Eventually, he’s drawn back to writing music, including new symphonies and a grand Te Deum, and Bruckner begins to notice he’s attracted some new champions.

Bruckner and the Symphonic Boa Constrictors
When Brahms compared Anton Bruckner's epic symphonies to being caught in the inescapable, suffocating coils of a giant snake, had he misunderstood Bruckner's bold originality? Tom Service makes the case for Bruckner, defending his music against both detractors and admirers.

Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 in E flat major, ‘Romantic’
Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra
Sir Simon Rattle (conductor)
Sir Simon Rattle makes his first Proms appearance as the new Chief Conductor of one of Germany’s leading ensembles, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. After a highly anticipated new work written for the orchestra by long-time Rattle collaborator Thomas Adès, we conclude our Bruckner 200th-anniversary celebrations. Few scores convey Anton Bruckner’s distinctive combination of mystery and warmth like his Symphony No. 4, the so-called ‘Romantic’ symphony that has proved his most enduringly popular.

Bruckner is finally a hit! Can he now follow through on the high expectations he’s created? With Donald Macleod

Fulu Miziki’s mixtape
September begins with Zero Waste Week, an invitation to come together as communities to tackle pollution by reducing rubbish. As this year’s campaign draws to a close, Verity Sharp considers what music born of a similar ethos might sound like, sharing the work of an exciting crop of artists who are finding inventive ways to repurpose materials for musical ends.
Headlining the episode is the Kinshasa-via-Marseille Afrofuturist collective Fulu Miziki, whose name literally means “music from garbage”. The Congolese group designs, builds and plays instruments upcycled from rubbish - from guembris born out of computer casing, to jerrycan drum kits. Fresh off the release of their new EP, Mokano, their mixtape offers up favourite tracks showcasing their multifaceted musical taste.
Elsewhere in the show, we lend our ears to new infectious music from El Khat, a trio that, in the same spirit of Fulu Miziki, deploys one-of-a-kind instruments built from discarded materials; and we get inside an Underground Factory with Chinese guitarist Mamer, before plunging in the soothing sounds of Nala Sinephro’s ambient jazz. Plus field recordings from a Swiss recycling centre.
