BBC Symphony Orchestra
Dalia Stasevska (conductor)
One day in 1983, the troubled American composer Julius Eastman presented his ex-boyfriend with a rolled-up score – that of his Symphony No. 2. The music, which wasn’t seen again or performed until 2018, tells of their love and its disintegration in an orchestral language all of its own – part drone piece, part thematic symphony. The BBC Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor Dalia Stasevska follows this remarkable work with Gustav Mahler’s songs on love, loneliness and withdrawal, sung by the inimitable Jamie Barton, and Sibelius’s most awe-inspiring symphony, the Fifth – his testament to nature’s capacity to embolden and console.

Thomas Adès
Thomas Adès is one of the UK’s foremost and most successful composers. His first opera, Powder Her Face, was premiered in 1995, when he was just 24. With its racy subject matter, based on the life of the Duchess of Argyll, it put him squarely on the musical map, winning widespread critical acclaim. His catalogue now includes almost 90 works, with commissions from the world’s leading orchestras and festivals, two further operas, The Tempest and The Exterminating Angel, and an epic ballet score for Wayne McGregor, Dante, based on the Divine Comedy.
To anticipate the UK premiere of his new work, Aquifer, at the 2024 BBC Proms, Thomas Adès talks to Michael Berkeley about his musical inspirations and passions, including works by Schubert, Chopin, Walton, Stravinsky, Berg and Harrison Birtwistle.

Sofi Jeannin, conductor
Over its 100-year history the BBC Singers – Britain’s only full-time professional chamber choir – has performed a vast array of repertoire, in concert and over the airwaves, giving the premieres of countless works. Under Chief Conductor Sofi Jeannin, today’s virtuosic line-up revives some of these milestones. Song for Athene was written after John Tavener attended the funeral of Athene Hariades, the daughter of a family friend; the piece won a huge international audience when performed at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997. Britten’s A Shepherd’s Carol is a setting of W. H. Auden, first heard in a 1944 BBC radio programme of new poetry written specially for Christmas Eve. Premiered in 2018, John Pickard’s Mass in Troubled Times interweaves words from the Latin Mass with texts from four other languages to piece together the story of a refugee father and daughter fleeing their war-torn country by sea.

The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra – Bristol Beacon’s Orchestra in Residence – opens its concert with a little-known gem of Ukrainian music. Feodor Akimenko was born in Kharkiv in 1876, going on to teach Igor Stravinsky before writing his beautiful ‘Poème- Nocturne’ Angel in 1912. The BSO’s Ukrainian Chief Conductor (and Akimenko aficionado) Kirill Karabits conducts it here as a prelude to American composer Jennifer Higdon’s seriously flamboyant Percussion Concerto, played by Evelyn Glennie, and Tchaikovsky’s heart-on-sleeve Symphony No. 5. Knell by Iranian composer Niloufar Nourbakhsh offers a glance back to Akimenko’s Angel in its momentary, symbolic plea for peace.

Some phenomena only music can depict. From an age before space travel, Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite evoking the astrological associations of the planets represents one of classical music’s most extraordinary acts of imagination. Before heading into space, we are lured into the wilderness courtesy of music from conductor Sakari Oramo’s home country of Finland. The looping repetitions of Sibelius’s The Wood Nymph lead us shaman-like into a seductive woodland, while Lara Poe’s brand-new work for soprano and orchestra channels haunting Nordic cow-calling traditions. Student musicians from Helsinki and London unite for a Prom all about music’s conjuring power.

This week, Donald Macleod explores the life of William Byrd, the greatest British musician of his age. When the great Czech composer Antonín Dvořák died, his protégé and son-in-law Josef Suk wrote three movements of a symphony in his mentor’s memory. Then tragedy struck again: Suk’s wife, Dvořák’s own daughter, died too. Added to the long-breathed, lyrical symphony Suk had written came two new movements: a furious scherzo and a transcendental statement of acceptance, finding peace in the beauty and renewal of the natural world. Celebrating the Year of Czech Music, the Republic’s flagship orchestra visits the Proms for a concert that combines Suk’s monumental symphony of grief with the gorgeous Cello Concerto by his beloved father-in-law.

WED 16:00 Composer of the Week (m001n830)
William Byrd (1543-1623)
The Chapel Royal
Byrd joins the Queen’s personal choir and tries his luck in publishing. With Donald Macleod.
This week, Donald Macleod explores the life of William Byrd, the greatest British musician of his age. Donald is joined all week by Byrd expert Kerry McCarthy to explore Byrd’s story and reveal a composer of determined ambition and powerful convictions. Those who encountered him, found Byrd could be a difficult adversary as well as a loyal friend. Donald also visits Essex to discover what remains of Byrd’s legacy in the places where he felt most at home, and to see how the composer navigated a hazardous path between his catholic faith and his duty to the crown at a time of great religious intolerance.
Today, a tragic accident leaves a vacancy at the Chapel Royal. Byrd steps up to join this elite band of musicians and works hard to make the most of his new connections at the royal court. When Queen Elizabeth awards him a patent to print music, surely fame and riches will follow?

For their second consecutive night at the Proms, Jakub Hrůša and the Czech Philharmonic bring to life the blazing fanfares, raw outcries and hushed humility of Leoš Janáček’s unparalleled Glagolitic Mass. Inspiration for the work struck the composer in a misty wood. ‘Its moist scent was the incense,’ he wrote. ‘I felt a cathedral grow out of the giant expanse of woods ... Now I hear the voice of each arch-priest in the tenor solo, a maiden angel in the soprano – and in the choir I hear our people.’ Experience the power of Janáček’s galvanising work alongside two other Czech masterpieces, Dvořák’s fiendish Piano Concerto and a first Proms performance for the Military Sinfonietta by the tragically short-lived Vítězslava Kaprálová, a sometime pupil of Bohuslav Martinů.

Holst's 'The Planets' at the Proms and highlights from the Verbier Festival
Linton Stephens presents a programme of specially recorded classical music, featuring two chamber recitals from the Verbier Festival: one by a trio of new-generation musicians, and another by pianist Nikolai Lugansky.
Elsewhere, Linton revisits Prom 46, recorded live at London's Royal Albert Hall. Sakari Oramo conducts student musicians from Helsinki and London, who join together for a programme celebrating music's conjuring power. Includes the world-premiere performance of a BBC commission by Lara Poe for soprano and orchestra, inspired by Nordic cow-calling traditions. The Royal College of Music Symphony Orchestra and the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra also perform music by Sibelius, as well as Gustav Holst's epic work of imagination from an era before space travel: 'The Planets'.

FRI 16:00 Composer of the Week (m001n856)
William Byrd (1543-1623)
Stondon Massey
Donald Macleod sees Byrd retire to the country and pursue new directions in music and in life.
Today, Donald returns to Stondon Massey where Byrd lived for nearly 30 years, and searches for clues to his final resting place there. He looks at the legal battles Byrd initiated with some of his neighbours and explores the daring new musical project Byrd set for himself, now he was free of his regular obligations at the Chapel Royal.

INTERVAL: With a career spanning 132 appearances at the Royal Albert Hall, Sir Andrew Davis clocked-up more First and Last Nights of the Prom than any other conductor in modern times. Ian Skelly reflects on Sir Andrew's presence at the festival, his famously good-humoured speeches, and among other things his place in the Proms' musical firmament.

Martyn Brabbins (conductor)
Sir Andrew Davis (1944–2024), the celebrated British conductor famed for delighting audiences at the BBC Proms with his sparkling wit and exquisite musicianship, is remembered in this Prom from the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Martyn Brabbins. The centrepiece of the concert is Reich’s Jacob’s Ladder, the composer’s ‘dream of ascending and descending a ladder between heaven and earth’ that was deemed ‘energetic, meditative, light, graceful and refreshing’ when premiered in New York last spring. The second half will now include the ‘Ritual Dances’ from Tippet’s opera The Midsummer Marriage and Elgar’s ‘Enigma’ Variations, two pieces close to Sir Andrew Davis’s heart.

A Festival Special
Jennifer Lucy Allan celebrates the left field and experimental corners of this summer’s festival circuit. Recently back from the fields of Oxfordshire’s Supernormal festival, Jen reflects on some of her favourite performances and moments from this year’s edition. And we look ahead to some of the most exciting experimental festivals taking place in Europe on this final weekend in August.
For adventurous listeners there’s plenty on offer, from Burd Ellen’s workshop on Ghost songs and Revenant Ballads at Birmingham’s Supersonic, to performances from DO U WANT TO MOVE BACK TO LDN, Kamilya Jubran and Nídia, at Belgium’s Eupen-based Meakusma festival. Expect sonic fireworks from Jason Kahn at Switzerland’s improvisation-focused La Fête à Bruit, and Sofia Jernberg gracing Field Notes in Berlin.
Elsewhere in the show, we step into a cool church, to hear better the cloud-like echoes of a lone voice, singing into the cavernous space, and its organ, played by artist Allan Gilbert Balon. There are synths and barked vocal vibrations, from cult band Liaisons Dangereuses' side project CHBB, and we press play on some old tape recordings made in 2005 in Dusseldorf by two Chinese art students, who later formed a free improvisation duo, MTDM (from the Chinese name mei tui de ma, “horse without legs”).

FRI 23:30 'Round Midnight (m00224c1)
Joyce Moreno's Mixtape
Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades.
Fridays on 'Round Midnight sound a little different, featuring in depth conversations, live sessions and mixtapes. This time, Soweto welcomes Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist Joyce Moreno, to curate a special blend of her favourite pieces.
Over a career that stretches back more than 50 years, Joyce has recorded hundreds of songs, been nominated for multiple Latin Grammy awards, and was even called 'one of the greatest singers' by the Godfather of modern Brazilian music, Antônio Carlos Jobim. Ahead of a London performance at The Jazz Cafe on September 8th, Joyce pulls out tracks from the likes of June Christy, Bill Evans and João Gilberto - as well as a classic of her own.
