SAT 11:00 BBC Proms (m0021r0y)
2024

Prom 29: Jonathan Scott – Organ Recital

Live at the BBC Proms: Jonathan Scott – Organ Recital. Music by Wagner, Bach, Chaminade, Jules Grison, Charles Ives and Tchaikovsky.

Presented by Sarah Walker, live from the Royal Albert Hall, London.

Richard Wagner (arr. Lemare): Tannhäuser Overture
Johann Sebastian Bach: Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542
Cécile Chaminade (arr. J. Scott): Six Concert Études, Op. 35 – Autumn
Jules Grison: Toccata in F major
Charles Ives: Variations on ‘America’
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (arr. J. Scott): Overture '1812'

Jonathan Scott (organ)

Jonathan Scott tames the mighty mechanical beast that is the Royal Albert Hall organ for this mid-morning recital that promises to show everything the 9,999-pipe instrument can do – bells and whistles included. This Prom journeys from supersized Bach and Edwin Lemare’s spectacular arrangement of Wagner’s Tannhäuser overture to the eccentricity of Charles Ives and the peaceful rapture of Scott’s own arrangement of Cécilie Chaminade’s ‘Autumn’. Another of the organist’s own arrangements, that of Tchaikovsky’s ‘1812’ Overture, will almost literally pull out all the stops, and quite possibly bring the house down.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (m001lbzc)
Isabel Wilkerson

The Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Isabel Wilkerson was born in Washington DC. Her parents moved there in the Great Migration – when six million African Americans left the rural south to escape poor economic conditions and discrimination. Isabel later wrote about this exodus in her bestselling and widely acclaimed book The Warmth of Other Suns, the product of 15 years of research and more than 1200 interviews.

She started out in newspapers as a reporter and feature writer, and in 1994 she became the first woman of African-American heritage to win the Pulitzer Prize for journalism, when she was Chicago bureau chief of the New York Times. More recently she published her second book Caste: the Origins of our Discontents, an examination of racial stratification. The New York Times described it as the “keynote nonfiction book of the American century thus far” and it also won praise from President Obama.

Isabel's choices include works by Camille Saint-Saëns, John Coltrane, Philip Glass and Georg Philipp Telemann.

PROM: PART 2
Gabriel Fauré
La bonne chanson

Step into fin de siècle Paris, where the poet Verlaine, the painter Monet and the composers Fauré and Debussy would meet at regular soirées. From Verlaine, Fauré took nine poems to set as his exquisite cycle La bonne chanson – a serene depiction of the love Fauré was currently experiencing for Debussy’s future wife. Debussy’s own String Quartet was finished while Fauré’s work was still in progress, and proved one of the composer’s first ventures into his new, luxuriant musical world of light, sensuality and fragile beauty. The concert opens with a work by Augusta Holmès, one of the many 19th-century French women composers now being rediscovered. Her intimate song cycle Les heures contemplates the ‘hours’ of the day.

SUN 18:00 The Early Music Show (m0021pr4)
Gold

In honour of the Paris Olympics, Hannah French explores medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music associated with gold, silver and bronze across three episodes of The Early Music Show.

As the Games draw to a close, Hannah reaches the top spot on the podium, focusing on gold and its allure over composers and musicians across the centuries. Golden apples, the golden fleece, golden tresses, the golden ratio: gold glitters in musical treasures from the Tudor court in England to the opera stages of Baroque Venice.

SUN 19:00 Between the Ears (m001bz6l)
California Burning

"Out in the forest the ember waits in its cigarette to make its black mark on the world, not content to ravage a few rolled tobacco leaves. It wants to show it can murder more trees than the last bitter fire."
Kim Addonizio - Exit Opera

When wildfires turned the sky over San Francisco orange, poet Kim Addonizio began to fear for the future of the California she loves. In the footsteps of Jack Kerouac, who spent a season as a fire lookout, she heads for the National Sequoia Forest to spend a night in a fire lookout tower high above the tree-line.

"I came to a point when I needed solitude, and just stop the machine of thinking and living. They say in ancient scriptures wisdom can be only obtained from solitude."
Jack Kerouac - Desolation Angels

There used to be over 10,000 lookouts scattered across the USA, but in the 1960s and 70s they began to fall out of use. Today they are coming back into use as the fire service needs every tool in their toolbox - and despite its toughness, it is a job often done by women, straining their experienced eyes into a network of early warning systems.

Kim learns the skills of a fire lookout from Mich Michigian and Kathryn Allison, who have watched fires rage and lightning explode from the relative safety of a tiny lookout tower, perched on a gigantic granite outcrop called Buck Rock. Scanning the horizon every 15 minutes, the job is to report ‘smokes’ - and when the lightning gets too close, to run inside and sit on the ‘lightning stool’ until the storm passes.

Jack Kerouac was less interested in fire, and more into Buddhism. In search of enlightenment, he headed to the Cascade Mountains, and the look-out on Desolation Peak. Poet Neeli Cherkovski reveals how after his initial delight, and without the crutch of drugs and liquor, he found the isolation tormenting.

“Desolation adventure finds me finding at the bottom of myself abysmal nothingness - worse than that, no illusion even - my mind's in rags.”

Inspired by these fire watchers, Kim Addonizio considers an inferno-like future of mega-fires, even giga-fires, whilst keeping an eye out for lightning strikes, fireworks, anything that could spark a fire, high in her lookout tower above the forest.

INTERVAL: Mariam Said joins presenter Ian Skelly to describe her late husband’s role in co-founding the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, and discuss how the momentum of the initiative led to the inauguration of the Barenboim-Said Akademie in Berlin. We hear, too, Daniel Barenboim’s recollections about the original impetus behind the Orchestra’s launch, plus current members of the ensemble share how the ideals enshrined in the orchestra's DNA remain more relevant than ever.

Schubert: Symphony No. 9 in C major, ‘Great'

Anne‐Sophie Mutter (violin)
West–Eastern Divan Orchestra
Daniel Barenboim (conductor)

In 1999, young Arab and Israeli musicians came together for the groundbreaking creative and social experiment that was the West–Eastern Divan Orchestra. A quarter of a century later, the ideals of listening, respect and mutual understanding enshrined in this ensemble are underlined like never before. For this timely Prom, the orchestra and its co-founder Daniel Barenboim bring with them Brahms’s consolatory Violin Concerto featuring soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter and the monolithic, momentum-fuelled symphony by Schubert that deservedly acquired the nickname ‘Great’.

Fryderyk Chopin (1810-1849)

An Introduction from Liszt

Donald Macleod examines Liszt’s role in Chopin’s first meetings with the novelist George Sand, and explores how their relationship almost led to the composer being killed.

Early in 1837, Franz Liszt introduced Chopin to a woman who would have a profound influence on his life. Her name was George Sand and Chopin’s relationship with the novelist would go on to stretch for almost a decade and prove to be the longest romantic bond of the composer’s life, and a defining creative relationship for both of them. Over the course of this week, Donald Macleod explores the intertwined lives of these two key figures in French romantic-era life.

In Monday’s episode, Donald examines Liszt’s role in Chopin’s first meetings with George Sand. Initially, Chopin was repulsed by the notorious cigar-smoking, trouser-wearing novelist, but the pair eventually formed a romantic relationship which would last for nine years. Donald also explores how the beginning of their relationship sparked an incident which almost led to the composer being killed.

Beethoven: Symphony No 7 in A major, Op 92

Jess Gillam (saxophone)
BBC National Orchestra of Wales
Nil Venditti (conductor)

With his Symphony No. 7 Beethoven permanently realigned Western music’s fundamental relationship with rhythm. In the process he created some of the most compelling music of his age. Young Italian-Turkish conductor Nil Venditti places this momentous symphonic dance alongside music by a composer from the generation after Beethoven, one who picked up the master’s baton and ran with it: Louise Farrenc. The first half spotlights two Welsh composers born less than 40 years apart. Grace Williams’s jaunty Concert Overture, written in her mid-twenties, came ‘highly recommended’ after its entry in a Daily Telegraph competition in 1932–3. And Sir Karl Jenkins, one of the most popular composers of our time, wrote his Stravaganza especially for tonight’s soloist, Jess Gillam.

Fryderyk Chopin (1810-1849)

Hallucinations and Rainstorms

Donald Macleod explores Chopin and Sand’s trip to Majorca on holiday, which didn’t turn out to be as idyllic as they had both hoped.

At the end of 1838, Chopin and Sand spent three months in Majorca, as a kind of honeymoon, to celebrate the start of their relationship. In Tuesday’s programme, Donald explores this trip, which bore musical dividends, but eventually proved to be a disaster, and not the idyllic paradise that they had both hoped for.

Christopher Maltman (baritone)
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Martyn Brabbins (conductor)

From Westminster Bridge and the bells of Big Ben to Bloomsbury Square, in his A London Symphony Vaughan Williams depicts the English capital, where horses still trotted through the streets and the countryside could be glimpsed from Marble Arch. Elgar’s ‘stout and steaky’ picture-postcard scenes of London life join anniversary composer Holst’s Hammersmith, commissioned for the BBC Military Band, in saluting the city. Vaughan Williams’s teacher Stanford (who died 100 years ago) completes the programme, with a selection of reflective songs performed by leading British baritone Christopher Maltman.

Fryderyk Chopin (1810-1849)

The End of the Affair

In Friday’s programme, Donald explores how Chopin’s relationship with George Sand came to a fractious end.

Donald Macleod explores how Chopin’s romantic relationship with George Sand, and one of the most productive creative relationships in the romantic world, broke down and came to a fractious end, with Sand making the details of their problems public in a thinly veiled novel.

Mel Bonis: Salomé
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Clarinet Concerto

c.8.25
Felix Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night's Dream - incidental music

Anthony McGill (clarinet)
Moyo Akandé (actor)
Ewan Black (actor)
NYCOS Chamber Choir
BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
Gemma New (conductor)

In the summer of 1826 Felix Mendelssohn stumbled upon a German translation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream made by August Wilhelm Schlegel. Spellbound, the 17-year-old composer wrote an orchestral overture for the play and, another 17 years later, augmented it with yet more scene-setting music – the most enchanting and characterful he would write. Gemma New joins the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra for Mendelssohn’s musical retelling of Shakespeare’s story performed with extracts from the play for dramatic context – after equally colourful musical storytelling from forgotten French late-Romantic composer Mel Bonis and the heavenly sounds of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto.

FRI 22:00 Late Junction (m0021q1s)
Shortwave radio, gas station music and shakuhachi weirdness

Verity Sharp presents a mind-expanding selection of adventurous music, including bleeps and pips from undecoded shortwave radio messages captured by Shropshire Number Stations, aka Rob Dunsford and Eric Loveland Heath, and new beats inspired by the wind from Photay’s forthcoming album.

Elsewhere in the show, a dystopian piece from ---__--____, a recent project from Seth Graham, More Eaze, and Recovery Girl, inspired by American gas stations, racetracks and county fairs; plus geometric improvisations from Berlin’s Thuluth, the trio of Magda Mayas, Ute Wassermann and Raed Yassin who find new sounds through playing with objects, instruments and the human voice.

There’s time, too, for a warped hymn to curiosity taken from a live session by Betamax Vs. Bell & Wong, who offer liberatory weirdness on shakuhachi, drums and tape machines.
