Iain Burnside chooses his favourite recording of Mahler's Kindertotenlieder.
Gustav Mahler composed his song cycle Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children) between 1901 and 1904 for voice and orchestra. The texts are poems by Friedrich Rückert, selected from the 428 poems he wrote in the 1830s as an outpouring of grief following the illness and death of two of his children from scarlet fever. Mahler's Late Romantic settings reflect the poems' mixture of feelings: anguish, fantasy resuscitation of the children, resignation, and ending in a mood of transcendence.

Angel Blue and Jonathan Tetelman star in Puccini's La Rondine, 'The Swallow', live at the Metropolitan Opera in New York: a bittersweet love story, conducted by Speranza Scappucci.
Magda is the mistress of the wealthy Rambaldo, but believes that love has nothing to do with wealth. When her palm is read at a party, it's predicted that she will go south in pursuit of romance, like 'la rondine', the swallow. Soon afterwards she meets the idealistic Ruggero, and it looks like that prediction is correct.
Presented by Debra Lew Harder with commentator Ira Siff.

Hearing Places
Tom Service introduces some of the latest sounds in new music including the world premiere of Colin Riley's haunting Hearing Places - an exhortation to listen and to relate fully with the Welsh landscape, be it the clangour of the Port Talbot Steelworks or the delicate sounds of the valleys.
As the composer says: "In this suite of seven movements I am aiming for a new kind of symphonic experience. It involves immersive listening, and a way of sharing in the noticing of often inconsequential, yet hugely-beautiful sounds. The music aims to capture both the delicate fragility and massive power of our world, and to illustrate simply what we stand to lose in the environment crisis we are now in. It is my view that through the act of noticing our surroundings we can begin to value our world more. Natural elements are frequently referenced in the music (weather, times of day, natural phenomena and the seasons), as are the human imprints left in our world (machinery, vehicles, pattern-making, conversation). Hearing Places celebrates the rich audio and visual patterns found all around us, and I’ve spent the last year travelling to all corners of Wales collecting field recordings and video clips of interesting places that have captured my imagination. These small building blocks of pitch, rhythm, and pattern in turn then became the materials for the creation of the music itself. Sometimes I simply made a natural emotional response in terms of mood and feeling, and at other times took a more forensic approach....Sometimes a place may be recognizable, but very often it remains abstract and mysterious."

Sathnam Sanghera
Sathnam Sanghera is a best-selling writer and journalist. He grew up in Wolverhampton to Punjabi parents in a home where, in his words, “no one read books or owned them, let alone wrote them”. When he started school, he couldn’t speak English but he went to graduate from Cambridge University with a first-class degree in English Language and Literature.
He started out writing for newspapers, winning the Young Journalist of the Year at the British Press Awards in 2002. He now writes for The Times. In 2008 he published his memoir of his early life called The Boy With the Topknot.
More recently he has focused on our colonial history. In 2021 he published Empireland: How Imperialism Has Shaped Modern Britain, which was named a Book of the Year at the National Book Awards. Then came Empireworld: How British Imperialism has shaped the Globe, which quickly became a best-seller.
Sathnam's musical choices include Bach, John Coltrane, Debussy and Jasdeep Singh Degun.

Byron
On April 19th 1824, the Romantic writer Lord Byron died aged 36 in Missolonghi in Greece. He was on his way to fight against Turkey but became seriously ill and died during a violent electrical storm on April 19th 1824. His dramatic narrative poems Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, Manfred and The Corsair have inspired symphonies and ballets by composers including Verdi, Liszt, Robert Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Berlioz, Hugo Wolf and Elgar. Although his death was two centuries ago his life and writing seem much more of our times - from his fame and infamy described as ‘mad, bad and dangerous to know’, his bisexuality, his life as a ‘celebrity’ mobbed by fans and renowned across Europe, his writing in Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage on his horror at being shown the damage caused by Lord Elgin’s removal of the Parthenon marbles in Greece to his poem Darkness written after the volcano Mount Tambora erupted in Indonesia which reads like a premonition of the wild fires and famine caused by climate change today. To mark his life, today's Words and Music hears music inspired by Byron's writing and readings by Robert Glenister from poems, diaries, journals and his opening speech in the House of Lords on the plight of the Luddites.

Sakamoto - Art Is Long, Life Is Short
Ryuichi Sakamoto, probably the most famous and successful Japanese musician ever, died in March 2023 aged 71. His reputation as a genius composer and musical innovator seems assured, although we are only just beginning to comprehend his oeuvre. What’s more, Sakamoto coexisted in the worlds of cinema, glitzy celebrity, cutting-edge technology and avant-garde art.
A year after his passing, broadcaster Nick Luscombe reflects on Sakamoto’s legacy, and asks what was so distinct and important about his prescient vision. In listening closely to the music, Luscombe learns that Sakamoto is not simply a uniquely independent artist, but also a figure that symbolises - and reacts against - postwar Japanese society.

Marianna Martines (1744-1812)
Protégé
Donald Macleod explores the relationship between Martines and the poet Metastasio, who encouraged her talents and introduced her into Vienna's musical life.
Marianna Martines lived and worked in Vienna alongside some of classical music’s greatest names. She was tutored by Haydn, played piano duets with Mozart, corresponded with Padre Martini and Farinelli, and was frequently invited to perform for the Imperial Court. For nearly 40 years, she was mentored by Metastasio, Europe’s most celebrated opera librettist. Martines became a significant personality in Viennese cultural circles, with her works regularly performed in the city and commissions and honours coming her way from across Europe. All this week, Donald Macleod is joined by Dr Jeremy Llewellyn to lift the veil on this long-neglected yet prolific and highly celebrated composer and discover the unique perspective her story provides on cultural life in Vienna during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
From the moment Marianna Martines was born, she enjoyed a privileged position in Vienna. Her father was a high-ranking official to the Papal Nuncio in the city and, upon his arrival in Vienna, was invited with his family to live with the famed opera librettist, Pietro Metastasio. The writer quickly spotted the musical talents of young Marianna and decided to take her under his wing.

Tutored by Greats
Donald Macleod explores the building where Martines lived alongside Metastasio and Haydn.
Marianna Martines lived and worked in Vienna among some of classical music’s greatest names. She was tutored by Haydn, played piano duets with Mozart, corresponded with Padre Martini and Farinelli, and was frequently invited to perform for the Imperial Court. For nearly 40 years, she was mentored by Metastasio, Europe’s most celebrated opera librettist. Martines became a significant personality in Viennese cultural circles with her works regularly performed in the city, and commissions and honours coming her way from across Europe. All this week, Donald Macleod is joined by Dr Jeremy Llewellyn to lift the veil on this long neglected yet prolific and highly celebrated composer and discover the unique perspective her story provides on cultural life in Vienna during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The Martines family lived on the third floor of the Altes Michaelerhaus, alongside the famous poet Metastasio. The writer arranged for a young man who was living in the attic of the same building to give her music lessons. Neither of them could have known then that her teacher, Joseph Haydn, would eventually become the most famous composer in Europe. There was a stream of visitors to the house to see Metastasio, including another prominent music, Antonio Salieri, who was soon taking lessons in declamation from the poet. It is probable that Salieri and Martines were tutored by Metastasio together. The Mozarts also visited the Altes Michaelerhaus, and it has been suggested that one of Wolfgang Mozart’s early sacred works, is based on music by Marianna Martines.

The National Youth Orchestra and The National Youth Brass Band
When music is used as a catalyst for change, it brings visceral optimism and the National Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Brass Band embody this energy in a concert that celebrates the power of music to spark hope and inspire commitment to new beginnings.
Brilliant young musicians from across the UK join forces for Gavin Higgins’ Concerto Grosso: the sounds of a full symphony orchestra collide with the sounds of a brass band and they send sparks flying!
The young musicians then embrace the grandeur of a brass fanfare by Dani Howard (current Resident Artist with the National Youth Orchestra) before performing Prokofiev’s extraordinary Symphony No 5. ‘I conceived of it as glorifying the grandeur of the human spirit,’ wrote Prokofiev about this symphony which was premiered in January 1945.

Marianna Martines (1744-1812)
Triumphs in Italy
Donald Macleod looks at a significant collaboration that extended Martines’s fame abroad.
Saverio Matteo, a poet based in Naples, wrote to his colleague, Metastasio asking for assistance. Could he help persuade the eminent composer, Johann Hasse to set one of his Italian psalms to music? In reply, Metastasio suggested his friend forget about Hasse, and collaborate instead with his protégé, Marianna Martines. This led to Martines composing a number of works which became popular in Naples and Vienna. Metastasio also wrote to Padre Martini suggesting he propose her for membership of the

BBC Philharmonic from Manchester
The BBC Philharmonic is joined by conductor Anna Rakitina and contralto Jess Dandy for music by Perry and Shostakovich.
To open the concert, the orchestra marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Smetana with his iconic portrait of the river Vltava.
Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony "a Soviet artist's reply to just criticism" to Stalin's displeasure at his opera "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" has always presented a dichotomy; here a deliberately simple and direct musical language (Stalin's approval of this music was vital to Shostakovich staying alive as well as his career) can also be interpreted as things left unsaid. Fear of persecution by the authorities - danger to himself and those he cared for - prevented overt criticism of the regime within which he lived and worked, but for many the music portrays powerful double messages. At each listen our experience of the world might lead us in a different direction.
Contralto Jess Dandy joins the orchestra for Julia Perry's Stabat Mater. This hard-hitting portrayal of Mary at the foot of Jesus's cross is a synthesis of words and music across the ages; the universal language of loss and suffering is shared and amplified across time and place.
Recorded at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall on 2 March 2024.

Following the death earlier this week of conductor Sir Andrew Davis, Radio 3 revisits his last appearance at the BBC Proms.

Introduced by Andrew McGregor.

Michael Tippett: Symphony No 4
British music: it isn't always what you think. Written as Europe lurched towards the war, Vaughan Williams's volcanic Fourth Symphony is a mighty cry of protest and rage, expressed in music that burns itself into the soul. A generation later, in the Cold War, Michael Tippett began his final symphony with the most primal of sounds - a human breath. This isn't so much a symphony as a whole life, in all its rapture, its chaos and its teeming, tumultuous beauty.

Marianna Martines (1744-1812)
Death of Metastasio
Donald Macleod looks at Martines’s final years when she became fully independent.
When her longstanding mentor, Metastasio, died he left Marianna Martines a generous financial bequest, along with his musical instruments and scores. Marianna and her siblings were now able to move to a more spacious and prestigious apartment in Vienna where she regularly hosted one of the most popular and important music gatherings in the city. She also established her own singing academy.

Keiji Haino’s mixtape
Jennifer Lucy Allan shares a special mixtape by genre-defying artist Keiji Haino, plus heavy music from Diamanda Galas and an homage to the Amazon rainforest by Amaro Freitas.
Born in Chiba, Japan, in 1952, Keiji Haino has spent his life experimenting with the sound of guitar and voice, becoming a musical (and style) icon for the international underground and avant-garde scenes. Over his long career, which began in the ‘70s, he created several rock and psychedelic-garage outlets and collaborated with artists such as Faust, Peter Brötzmann, Bill Laswell, Merzbow and John Zorn, all the while building an impressive record collection which spans early electro-acoustic music to punk. Haino-san has pulled out some of his favourites for Late Junction, including music from a Vietnamese string quartet and a psychedelic track offering a remedy for when “you are feeling blue”.
Elsewhere in the show, moments from a ‘60s Stockhausen composition for voice, the latest sounds courtesy of East Anglian composer-improviser Laura Cannell, and Glassy computer music by Montreal's Camp, aka David Turgeon. Plus a special extract from experimental vocalist, movement artist and composer Elaine Mitchener's These Cost the Earth, a new performance work that reflects upon the textile waste crisis, examining the environmental and human cost of discarding clothes to landfill recorded live at Assembly Festival, which took place at Somerset House, London, at the end of March.
