9.30am Building A Library: Emily MacGregor on Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra

For Bartók, the circumstances surrounding the composition of his Concerto for Orchestra could hardly have been more miserable. In 1940 he fled his native Hungary to escape the Nazis and spent the remaining five years of his life in the United States, those years blighted by despair, painful illness and abject poverty. But unknown to Bartók, two fellow Hungarians, violinist Joseph Szigeti and conductor Fritz Reiner, conspired to persuade Serge Koussevitzky to offer a generous commission. In 1943, the glamorous conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra visited Bartók in his New York hospital, and flamboyantly presented the composer, not only with a commission for an orchestral work but also a $500 down payment. Bartók began work in August and finished the Concerto for Orchestra just under three moths later. It spotlights, often with brilliance and playfulness, all the sections of the orchestra and perhaps only its central Elegy, which Bartók called a 'lugubrious death-song', reflects the circumstances of its composition. The work's recorded history begins at the beginning in 1944 with Koussevitzky and the Boston SO and has been much recorded ever since, a 20th-century classic by one of the century's greatest composers.

SAT 11:45 Music Matters (m0013ryd)
Tabea Zimmermann, Femi Elufowoju jr, Maria Yudina

Sara Mohr-Pietsch talks to viola virtuoso Tabea Zimmermann about her dazzling career on the concert platform. She first picked up a viola at the age of three, and in the decades since she’s performed with the world’s greatest orchestras and has become a hugely respected chamber musician and teacher. She discusses the music that means the most to her, the curiosity that comes from working with young performers, and the future of classical music.

Theatre artist Femi Elufowoju jr is making his debut as an opera director with a new production of Verdi’s gruesome tragic opera, Rigoletto at Opera North. He’s drawn on his own life as a British Nigerian to update the drama and the staging, dealing with issues of identity and discrimination, as a way to open up and illuminate the story. He joins Sara along with baritone Eric Greene (Rigoletto) and soprano Jasmine Habersham (Gilda) as they discuss the new staging and their relationship to Verdi’s music.

We explore the extraordinary story of the 20th century Russian pianist Maria Yudina, brought to life in a new biography ‘Playing with Fire’ by Elizabeth Wilson. Maria Yudina became one of the most respected and famous, but also controversial Soviet pianists and was a friend and champion to the great composers of her day such as Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Boulez. She was also an active revolutionary, an advocate for the oppressed, and a carer for the sick. Sara talks to Elizabeth Wilson and composer Gerard McBurney about the musician, her recordings, and the urban myths which surround her life.

Plus, Sara is joined by composer Nitin Sawhney and Coventry's Poet Laureate Emilie Lauren Jones to discuss 'Ghosts in the Ruins' - a new site-specific work to mark the 60th anniversary of Coventry Cathedral. The project was commissioned as part of Coventry UK City of Culture and takes Britten’s War Requiem, written for the consecration of the new cathedral, as the starting point. We find out about how the new piece brings together local musicians, choirs, poets and projections.

SAT 13:00 Inside Music (m0013ryj)
Composer Nico Muhly curates a distinctive playlist

Composer Nico Muhly draws on influences ranging from American minimalism to the Anglican choral tradition. In this programme, the minimalists are represented by a powerful aria from John Adams’s opera Doctor Atomic, as well as film music from Philip Glass and music for strings by Steve Reich. The Anglican choral tradition appears via a rousing anthem by Charles Villiers Stanford, meditative psalm chant from the choir of King’s College, Cambridge, and a “perfect piece” by John Rutter.

Nico also chooses orchestral works by Sibelius, Stravinsky and Ravel, and he reveals his fascination with a fantastically strange recording of Mozart’s Fantasia in D minor.

A series in which each week a musician explores a selection of music - from the inside.

SAT 18:30 Opera on 3 (m0013rys)
Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro

The philandering Count Almaviva is determined to enjoy his droit de seigneur with Susanna, his valet Figaro's betrothed, on her wedding day. But the humiliated countess is equally determined to expose and embarrass the count, enlisting the help of Susanna and Figaro to do so. And then there's the cross-dressed, cross-dressing mass of raging adolescent hormones that is Cherubino, who is determined to try it on with anything that moves...

In one of the greatest operas of all time and under the guise of comedy, Mozart holds up the iniquities of society and the ambiguities of life to his unerring gaze.

As ever, the Met has assembled a starry international cast, including Lucy Crowe and Ryan McKinny as the young couple and Adam Plachetka and Golda Schultz as the count and countess.

Introduced by Debra Lew Harder in conversation with Ira Siff.

SUNDAY 23 JANUARY 2022

SUN 00:00 Freeness (m0013ryx)
Liberation Music

Corey Mwamba presents new improvised music.

The Universal Liberation Orchestra was formed in the late 70s, taking on various formations until two members remained: brothers River and Tom Smith. Making what they called ‘liberation music’, which they describe as music to help us realise the “possibilities available for all of us”, they render their expansive visions through the light and shade of psychedelic folk-rock and reflective instrumentation. The Nigerian-British producer and singer-songwriter Klein offers a soulful collage of audio samples, distortions, drone and paired down piano solos to bring to life the harmattan winds of West Africa and connected vignettes of experiences in the UK and Nigeria. Also in the show, new music from a Norway-based improvised music trio comprising pianist Emilio Mendonça, double bassist Celio Barros and drummer Marcio Gibson. The only recording made to date by the trio, it's a three-way exchange that swells and wanes through waves of in-the-moment expression.

Katherine Parkinson

Actress, comedian and playwright Katherine Parkinson shares her favourite music with Michael Berkeley.

Two years out of drama school and heavily in debt, Katherine Parkinson was offered a part in a new television comedy series The IT Crowd. As all fans of the cult series know, she played Jen, the hopeless boss of two computer geeks – she was the so-called “normal” one. The series ran from 2006 to 2013, with audiences of two million. For Katherine Parkinson, it made her career, winning her a British Comedy Award and a Bafta.

Since then Katherine Parkinson has appeared in everything from stage productions of Sophocles and Chekhov to television sci-fi drama Humans as well as Doc Martin and the sitcom The Kennedys. She has also moved into writing: her play about three people sitting for a painter premiered on television during lockdown.

Katherine chooses music by John Tavener, George Gershwin and Thomas Tallis, and polyphonic singing she discovered while filming in Georgia. She tells Michael how she tried to channel her inner Cecilia Bartoli during singing lessons at drama school, and how she had to pretend to be good at housework for her Olivier-nominated role in Home, I’m Darling at the National Theatre. And she talks movingly about her affection for her late father-in-law, the actor Trevor Peacock.

SUN 17:00 The Listening Service (m0013sbw)
Dancing about Architecture

Despite barbed quips about the impossibility of writing about music, people have been at it, successfully, for thousands of years, from Plato in ancient Greece until today. Many composers, too, have felt the need to set down in writing their musical credos; composers like Berlioz and Debussy have themselves been great writers about music. And then, what about the literary representations of music in passages which so clearly and evocatively describe what it's like to listen to music, which manage to articulate the emotions music so readily arouses but we find so hard to describe?

So is writing about music really like dancing about architecture? No, says Tom Service. But clunky, not-quite-worked through metaphors are definitely best avoided.

The music includes Beethoven's Rage Over a Lost Penny, Franz Lehár's Gold and Silver Waltz, Eartha Kitt singing Brother Can You Spare a Dime and Pink Floyd's Money.

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (m0013xsm)
Hidden Women and Silenced Scores

Leah Broad, one of Radio 3’s New Generation Thinkers and a music historian at the University of Oxford, explores why the music of three 20th-century women composers, much loved at the time, is so little heard today. Looking at issues of style, gender, nationality and genre, she hears from those who knew Avril Coleridge-Taylor, Doreen Carwithen and Dorothy Howell well, and uncovers the sometimes shocking stories of how their music was silenced.

Contributors include Dorothy Howell’s niece and nephew, Meryn and Columb Howell; Andrew Palmer and Andrew Knowles, who knew Doreen Carwithen; authors Sophie Fuller and Jeremy Dibble; musicians Chi-chi Nwanoku and Samantha Ege; and Oliver Dashwood, the great grandson of Avril Coleridge-Taylor.

The producer is Paul Arnold, for CTVC.

Beyond Limits

South African cellist, singer and composer Abel Selaocoe explores the infinite bounds of the cello, looking at the incredible range of sounds the instrument can make in the 21st century and beyond.

In this episode, Abel explains how the cello can be played in a huge number of different ways to go beyond its limits and sound almost unrecognisable. From Berio and Britten to Ernst Reijseger and Naná Vasconcelos, Abel delves into the power of how the cello to speaks to so many cultures around the globe today. With some incredible improvisations Abel demonstrates how he creates so many fascinating percussive sounds on the instrument, influenced by the Brazilian berimbau, South African uhadi and West African djembe. Abel moves from the beauty of Sir John Tavener to the searing electronics of Oliver Coates, ending with his own celebration of the cello's versatility.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (m0013s38)
Marianna Martines (1744-1812)

Protégé

Donald Macleod explores the relationship between Martines and the poet Metastasio, who encouraged her talents and introduced her into Vienna's musical life.

Marianna Martines lived and worked in Vienna alongside some of classical music’s greatest names. She was tutored by Haydn, played piano duets with Mozart, corresponded with Padre Martini and Farinelli, and was frequently invited to perform for the Imperial Court. For nearly 40 years, she was mentored by Metastasio, Europe’s most celebrated opera librettist. Martines became a significant personality in Viennese cultural circles, with her works regularly performed in the city and commissions and honours coming her way from across Europe. All this week, Donald Macleod is joined by Dr Jeremy Llewellyn to lift the veil on this long-neglected yet prolific and highly celebrated composer and discover the unique perspective her story provides on cultural life in Vienna during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

From the moment Marianna Martines was born, she enjoyed a privileged position in Vienna. Her father was a high-ranking official to the Papal Nuncio in the city and, upon his arrival in Vienna, was invited with his family to live with the famed opera librettist, Pietro Metastasio. The writer quickly spotted the musical talents of young Marianna and decided to take her under his wing.

TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week (m0013slh)
Marianna Martines (1744-1812)

Tutored by Greats

Donald Macleod explores the building where Martines lived alongside Metastasio and Haydn.

Marianna Martines lived and worked in Vienna among some of classical music’s greatest names. She was tutored by Haydn, played piano duets with Mozart, corresponded with Padre Martini and Farinelli, and was frequently invited to perform for the Imperial Court. For nearly 40 years, she was mentored by Metastasio, Europe’s most celebrated opera librettist. Martines became a significant personality in Viennese cultural circles with her works regularly performed in the city, and commissions and honours coming her way from across Europe. All this week, Donald Macleod is joined by Dr Jeremy Llewellyn to lift the veil on this long neglected yet prolific and highly celebrated composer and discover the unique perspective her story provides on cultural life in Vienna during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The Martines family lived on the third floor of the Altes Michaelerhaus, alongside the famous poet Metastasio. The writer arranged for a young man who was living in the attic of the same building to give her music lessons. Neither of them could have known then that her teacher, Joseph Haydn, would eventually become the most famous composer in Europe. There was a stream of visitors to the house to see Metastasio, including another prominent music, Antonio Salieri, who was soon taking lessons in declamation from the poet. It is probable that Salieri and Martines were tutored by Metastasio together. The Mozarts also visited the Altes Michaelerhaus, and it has been suggested that one of Wolfgang Mozart’s early sacred works, is based on music by Marianna Martines.

TUE 22:00 Free Thinking (m0013slw)
Diverse Classical Music

Widening the repertoire of classical music comes under the spotlight in today's Free Thinking conversation as New Generation Thinker Christienna Fryar speaks to researchers uncovering music that has been left out of the canon. Ahead of a concert featuring their work, she hears about the stories of three composers: the 18th-century French polymath Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the Japanese trailblazer Kikuko Kanai and the prolific African-American composer Julia Perry.

Christopher Dingle, a Professor of Music at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, is studying the music of Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799). Born in Guadeloupe to an enslaved mother and a French plantation owner father, Boulogne lived an extraordinary life – as well as being one of the first black colonels in the French army, he was a master fencer, celebrated violinist and conductor, whose concertos rival his contemporary Mozart in their fiendish virtuosity.

Mai Kawabata, from the Royal College of Music, is a musicologist and violinist. She shares the story of Kikuko Kanai (1906-1986), the first female composer in Japan to write a symphony. Kanai made waves in the musical establishment by fusing Japanese melodies with western-classical influences –her “life mission” was to popularise the folk music of her native Okinawa.

Michael Harper, a vocal tutor from the Royal Northern College of Music, is championing the work of Julia Perry (1924-1979). Perry occupied a unique place as a black American composer – female and upper-middle class, she won Guggenheim fellowships to train in Europe. Despite a life cut short by paralysis and illness, her works include 12 symphonies and three operas.

This research, done in collaboration with the AHRC and Radio 3, will result in special recordings and a concert broadcast of these composers’ works in Afternoon Concert on BBC Radio 3 next week and listen out for a follow up episode of Free Thinking featuring the research being done into four more diverse classical musicians.

Produced by Amelia Parker

If you want more information about the Diverse Composers project you can find that on the website of UK Research and Innovation https://www.ukri.org/news/celebrating-classical-composers-from-diverse-ethnic-backgrounds-2/

If you enjoyed this – there’s a playlist called New Research on the Free Thinking website where you can find discussions about everything from conserving fashion and putting it on display in museums to recording the accents found around Manchester, so do dip in. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03zws90

TUE 22:45 The Essay (m0013sly)
Unearthing Britannia's Tribes

The Maeatae

The Essay unearths the peoples of Iron Age Britain from warrior queens to Lindow Man in a major new series.

"We are the last people on earth, and the last to be free: our very remoteness in a land known only to rumour has protected us up till this day. Today the furthest bounds of Britain lie open—and everything unknown is given an inflated worth. But now there is no people beyond us, nothing but tides and rocks and, more deadly than these, the Romans." Tacitus, Agricola

Explore the worlds of ancient Albion; from the western reaches of Cornwall to the tribes of Essex and across to the wilds of Scotland and Wales. Their stories, footprint and traces have been dug from the ground, pored over by archaeologists and historians, and informed by the accounts of travellers and conquerors who visited the far shores of exotic Britannia for trade or glory. With the arrival of Caesar's armies, nothing would be the same again.

Playwright David Greig describes encountering a ghost of the Maeatae tribe during a starlit run in Scotland's Ochil Hills.

In reply, Metastasio suggested his friend forget about Hasse, and collaborate instead with his protégé, Marianna Martines. This led to Martines composing a number of works which became popular in Naples and Vienna. Metastasio also wrote to Padre Martini suggesting he propose her for membership of the

THU 12:00 Composer of the Week (m0013t4x)
Marianna Martines (1744-1812)

A Visitor from England

Donald Macleod follows English music historian, Charles Burney, to Vienna and his encounter with Martines.

Perhaps one of the reasons Martines never left Vienna was that, as her fame grew, she found that the world was coming to her. One important visitor was the English writer on music, Charles Burney. Burney had already heard reports of Metastasio’s protégé Marianna Martines, but, on meeting her, he was enchanted by her musical prowess as a composer and performer.

Marianna Martines (1744-1812)

Death of Metastasio

Donald Macleod looks at Martines’s final years when she became fully independent.

When her longstanding mentor, Metastasio, died he left Marianna Martines a generous financial bequest, along with his musical instruments and scores. Marianna and her siblings were now able to move to a more spacious and prestigious apartment in Vienna where she regularly hosted one of the most popular and important music gatherings in the city. She also established her own singing academy.

FRI 23:00 Late Junction (m0013t88)
Brìghde Chaimbeul and Anna Tréa in session

Verity Sharp shares our latest long-distance collaboration session from Scottish piper Brìghde Chaimbeul and Paulistano multi-instrumentalist Anna Tréa

Brìghde Chaimbeul was brought up on a peninsula called Sleat on the Isle of Skye. A native Gaelic speaker, she grew up surrounded by a musical family, and learned to play both piano and fiddle before taking up the pipes at the age of seven. One of her greatest inspirations is the legendary piper Rona Lightfoot, the first woman ever to win a major piping championship. Brìghde followed in her footsteps by winning the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award in 2016 and has since gone on to play the traditional Great Highland bagpipes and the revived Scottish smallpipes for audiences across the world. Her debut release The Reeling was recorded live in a church in the Black Isle Georgian town of Cromarty.

Anna Tréa is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and conductor from São Paulo. Her work links Brazilian rhythms such as the baião, samba, maracatu and more, with the sounds of blues and folk alongside African grooves and Indian mantras. She casts physicality into her work, be that through a technique she calls ‘body percussion’ or by incorporating dance and theatre into her playing style.

Elsewhere there’ll be the thumping tunes of Officer! and their recent dedication to the composer Cornelius Cardew. There’ll also be folk celebrations of the Black British experience from the songwriter and arranger Angeline Morrison, as well as new sounds emanating from late '70s analogue hardware courtesy of ambient outfit Biosphere.
