SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b0b9w3zq)
Paco Peña

Paco Peña first started playing the guitar at the age of six; it was his older brother's guitar, and since there were nine children in the family, all living in two rooms in a crowded house in Córdoba, he had a ready-made audience right from the beginning. He made his first professional appearance at the age of twelve, and toured through Spain before moving to London in the 1960s, where he found himself sharing concerts with Jimi Hendrix. Over the last fifty years he's established a world-wide reputation as a pre-eminent master of flamenco guitar. He's a composer too, of both a Requiem and a Mass in flamenco style.

In Private Passions, Paco Peña takes us back to the Spain of his childhood; this was only a few years after the end of the Spanish Civil War, and he describes the country he was born into as "fragile and tortured". He talks too about making a living as a musician on the Costa Brava, where he met his wife, and about what it was like to arrive in London in the 1960s, a time when flamenco guitar was relatively unknown.

Music choices include Mozart, Beethoven, de Falla, the Argentinian composer Eduardo Falú - and Bach, the composer Peña always listens to before going on stage to perform. He includes too the track he regards as flamenco at its quintessential best, by singer Camarón de la Isla and guitarist Paco de Lucía. And he gives away a few trade secrets about how to master passionate flamenco strumming - it involves painting your fingernails with glue.

A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3

Music by child prodigy Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729), Ursuline nun Isabella Leonarda (1620-1704), Maddalena Sirmen (1745-1818) - a gifted Venetian violinist who studied with Tartini, and Mrs. Philarmonica - a woman hiding behind a pseudonym, whose Corelli-influenced trio Sonatas were published in London in 1715.

Orchestral Manoeuvres

As the world's greatest celebration of orchestras and orchestral music that is the BBC Proms gets underway, Tom Service attempts to shed some light on three centuries of orchestral manoeuvres... When did orchestras begin and why? Why do they have standardised sections of strings, woodwind, brass and percussion? Why did they seem to get bigger and bigger as the 19th century turned into the 20th? Why have so many of the great composers spent so much of their time writing for them? Are they still relevant to today's composers and what's their future?

And to find out what it's actually like to play in an orchestra, an individual working together with sometimes 100 others, Tom talks to Beverley Jones, double bassist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

David Papp (producer).

SUN 17:30 Words and Music (b0b9w8bf)
The News

The News

Actor and comedian Miles Jupp, host of the popular Radio 4 panel game "The News Quiz", and radio news presenter Kathy Clugston, read poetry and prose about the news media and journalism, with music and archive clips.

News consumption in the age of the internet is something we now take for granted, and discerning which is truth and which is "fake" is a daily challenge for all of us. Yet this is nothing new. From the age of the Town Crier, through the early days of printed newspapers and the black and white Pathe News reels shown in cinemas, to half hourly new bulletins with reports from correspondents "embedded" in the midst of international conflicts, and 24 hour rolling news on global TV channels, we are constantly being bombarded with updates of events and opinions from all over the planet. News readers have become household names, and reporters are the heroes and villains of our time. The news media industry has long fascinated writers and poets, and much has been written about it over the centuries, from romantic notions of newspapers reflecting the moral compass of a nation, to sarcastic, nihilistic cynicism about prurient intrusion and political propaganda.

Readings include extracts from the autobiographies of Andrew Marr and Barry Norman, poems by T.S. Eliot, Siegfried Sassoon, George Crabbe, Carol Ann Duffy and Wendy Cope, and novels by Evelyn Waugh, Michael Frayn and Anthony Trollope. Music includes works by Malcolm Arnold, Janacek, Philip Glass, John Adams, Johann Strauss II, Django Bates and Erollyn Wallen. There are also some familiar news themes and key archive clips from across the ages.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (b0b9y9v0)
Josquin (c1450/1455-1521), Josquin - Who He?

In the company of choral director Jeremy Summerly, Donald Macleod goes in search of that elusive Renaissance master, Josquin des Prez. Today, the scant facts of the composer's life.

Among the few things definitively known about Josquin are the date and place of his death - the 27th of August, 1521, in the northern French town of Condé-sur-l'Escaut. The beginning of his life, as with much of what happened during its course, is shrouded in mystery. The occasional glimpses we get of Josquin through court records and the like paint a picture of a supremely talented, highly respected, well travelled and quite possibly rather difficult man whose dedication to his art went hand in hand with a canny appreciation of his own worth.

Juanjo Mena (conductor)

In his final season as its Chief Conductor, Juanjo Mena leads the BBC Philharmonic in a concert contrasting darkness and light. Darkness streaks across the second half with Shostakovich's heart-wrenching tribute to the Soviet victims of the Second World War - the powerful 'Leningrad' Symphony.

MON 22:00 Sunday Feature (b07z72jg)
In Search of Yves Klein

Yves Klein is best remembered for his use of a single colour, Yves Klein International Blue, but his theories, extravagant performances, and his radical conceptions have largely gone unacknowledged. Emerging as an artist after three decades of war and destruction, Klein's work and ideas are characterised by a jubilant 'breaking-free' from the clench of the early 20th century-- by optimism, exploration and a desire to experience life beyond the physical world - the "immaterial' as he called it'. His exhibition of an empty gallery space or the use of materials such as gold leaf (which he threw into the Seine) or fire: he even used naked bodies as paint brushes, single him out for changing the face of contemporary art. His artistic work was completed in only eight years - he died of a heart attack aged 34.

To coincide with Tate Liverpool's exhibition, the British American artist, Liliane Lijn, who met Klein in the late 1950s in Paris, gives vividness and clarity to the work and short life of this artist who said, "My paintings are only the ashes of my art".

Contributors include:
The artist and Klein's former wife, Rotraut Klein Moquay, his 'model' Elena Palumbo, the artists Michael Craig Martin, David Batchelor, Ian Whittlesea and Arnaud Desjardin, his biographer Sidra Stich, art dealer John Kasmin and critic Jascia Reichardt.

Producer, Kate Bland
A Cast Iron Radio production for BBC Radio 3.

MON 22:45 The Essay (b081tb1d)
Letters to Writers, Dear Geoffrey Chaucer...

'Dear Geoffrey Chaucer, Can I call you Geoff..?'

In a series of imaginary correspondences, novelist Ian Sansom is writing letters to five of literary history's most celebrated figures and interrogating them about their art.

'Oh Agatha Christie, Please - do tell - what is the secret of your success?'

As his correspondence unfolds, queries are raised and jealousies revealed.

'Dear Virginia Woolf, Please accept my apologies. For a long time I thought you represented everything that's wrong with literature...'

How exactly does George Eliot do it? And why does she keep ignoring Ian's letters?

'Dear George Eliot, You are simply so far out of my league as a correspondent that it is embarrassing even to put pen to paper and to address you directly.

In his on-going epistolary quest, Ian attempts to find out everything you wanted to know about some of our best-loved writers but just were too afraid to ask.

Producer: Conor Garrett.

TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week (b0b9yw3l)
Josquin (c1450/1455-1521), Josquin in Print

In the company of choral director Jeremy Summerly, Donald Macleod goes in search of that elusive Renaissance master, Josquin des Prez. Today, Petrucci's press boosts Josquin's fame.

Ottaviano Petrucci holds a special place in music history as the first printer to issue volumes of polyphonic music produced using movable type - making him a sort of musical Gutenberg. His opening salvo, in 1501, was the catchily titled Harmonice Musices Odhecaton - one hundred songs of harmonic music, an anthology of chansons by some of the leading composers of the day. Petrucci went on to publish several collections of Josquin's masses, whose dissemination throughout Europe spread the composer's reputation far and wide. The growth of music printing arguably also had a negative aspect, as it encouraged less scrupulous printers to market the work of lesser-known composers under the names of their more illustrious contemporaries - Josquin included. This practice has led in recent years to a radical shrinkage of Josquin's oeuvre, as more and more works once attributed to him are now considered to be by others.

Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande is an operatic fairy tale played out in the shadowy half-light of the mysterious kingdom of Allemonde. Love, desire, power and violence permeate this luminous score - arguably one of the greatest of the 20th century.

This semi-staged performance of Glyndebourne's new production, marking the centenary of the composer's death, is conducted by the company's Music Director Robin Ticciati, with Christopher Purves as the obsessive Golaud and former Kathleen Ferrier Award-winner Christina Gansch as his beloved Mélisande.

TUE 23:00 Late Junction (b0b9z155)
Max Reinhardt

In the spirit of BBC Introducing Max shines a light on artists who are unsigned, undiscovered and under-the-radar.

Max plays artists who have since made it big, going back to their early works when they were shaky and unsure. Including Curtis Mayfield's first ever lead vocal, one of John Cage's earliest song commissions and a demo of Syd Barrett found in Pink Floyd bandmate David Gilmour's personal collection.

Incorporating the spirit of Late Junction, Max also visits artists who will probably never see that level of fame or commercial success that are still doing important work that deserves more recognition. Like the inmates at Parchman Farm, Mississippi singing in the late 60s about a death in the community and the Yiddish songs written during World War II.

Tune in tomorrow night when the show is full to the brim with live music and festival fun from the BBC Introducing stage at this years Latitude Festival.

Produced by Rebecca Gaskell for Reduced Listening.

Gershwin's An American in Paris - a giddy, gloriously tuneful musical evocation of 1920s Paris - takes a stroll through the bustling City of Light, swept along by the jazz rhythms that were its throbbing pulse. The rhythmic impulse continues through Messiaen's hypnotic orchestral love song, the Turangalîla Symphony. Premiered by Leonard Bernstein in 1949, this Tristan and Isolde-inspired work is a celebration of sensual pleasure and boundless ecstasy.

WED 22:00 Sunday Feature (b0801l4q)
The Other Third

Think you know the Third Programme? Think again.

Alan Dein explores the 'other voice' of the Third - not the plummy accent, or the rarefied readings and art music, but the articulate and expressive voice of so-called ordinary people, brought to the airwaves via a group of producers fascinated with everyday lives and the wild sounds they could collect beyond the confines of the radio studio.

There's a significant omission to most studies of the life and times of the Third Programme. In the words of a title of one of the Third's own history programmes, there are 'Gaps in the Record'.

The gap which the Third helped to fill - through the work of figures like Douglas Cleverdon, Philip O'Connor, AL Lloyd, Alan Lomax and David Thomson - was to harness the stories of ordinary people's lives with a collection of creative and ground-breaking radio features and talks spanning the Third's two decades.
These programmes changed our conception of what radio should sound like - and their influence continues in the programmes we hear today.

Featuring: Andrew Barrow, Alecky Blythe, Dame Julia Cleverdon, Tim Dee, Johnny Handle, Doreen Henderson and Sir Jonathan Miller.

Producer: Martin Williams.

WED 22:45 The Essay (b081tkvc)
Letters to Writers, Dear George Eliot...

In the company of choral director Jeremy Summerly, Donald Macleod goes in search of that elusive Renaissance master, Josquin des Prez. Today, Josquin as craftsman and innovator.

It was no less than Martin Luther, architect of the Protestant Reformation, who dubbed his older contemporary Josquin Desprez "master of the notes, which must do as he wishes, while other composers must follow what the notes dictate". Nowhere is this mastery more apparent than in Josquin's Missa L'homme armé sexti toni, whose calm surface belies the fearsome complexity of its inner contrapuntal workings.

THU 22:00 Sunday Feature (b084vqg6)
Whatever Happened to the Avant-Garde?

Paul Morley has always been drawn to the avant-garde, but he never expected to find it in leafy Hampstead, preferred location for the well-heeled intellectuals of London.

Perhaps it's because he feels there is something special and important, even glamorous, about belonging to such a club. He also loves the idea of someone being so disappointed, frustrated or furious with their surroundings that they use imagination to create a new reality.

But where can you go to find the avant-garde today? Is it even possible to be avant-garde at the moment? When car adverts claim the avant-garde for themselves, is there room in this day and age for the sort of disturbance and shock of the old style avant-garde? Can Paul Morley himself be avant-garde in this programme?

Starting in the unlikely location of Hampstead - home to both Roland Penrose and Lee Miller, and the emergent ICA - Morley goes on an avant garde tour with art historian Anne Massey, tours Erno Goldfinger's modernist masterpiece, 2 Willow Road, and is awed into reverence by its sleek, utilitarian elegance, before crossing town to meet visionary architect Peter Salter.

He delves into the archives of Jasia Reichardt, and husband Nick Wadley, relishing tales of a truly prescient ICA 1968 exhibition, "Cybernetic Serendipity", which presaged the possibilities of computers and art in the future.

Paul toys with the concept of avant-garde fashion with former head of Central St Martin's, Willie Walters; gossips about improvisation with jazz pianist Steve Beresford; Gregor Muir recalls the shock of the Saatchi new, whilst poised between jobs at the ICA and the Tate; Simon Munnery comedian adds a surreal touch, and ex-Gang of Four member, Jon King, currently working for VICE Productions, analyses what in the world can shock us today. And is the DNA in our stars or in our genes? Dr Gilly Forrester, evolutionary neuropsychologist, throws some evolutionary bombshells into the debate.

Paul Morley ponders the death, or not, of the avant-garde

FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week (b0b9z8wx)
Josquin (c1450/1455-1521), Legacy

In the company of choral director Jeremy Summerly, Donald Macleod goes in search of that elusive Renaissance master, Josquin des Prez. Today, Josquin and posterity.

Once they're dead, many composers pass directly into obscurity and are forgotten. Not so Josquin. After his death in 1521, there were fulsome musical tributes; later generations 'parodied' his works; and we know that Josquin's own music stayed continuously in the repertoire well into the 17th century. Today's programme includes a pair of memorial tributes, by the decidedly obscure Jaquet of Mantua and Hieronymus Vinders; a parody Magnificat by Lassus; and a trio of masterpieces by Josquin himself.

Jaquet of Mantua: Dum vastos Adriae fluctus
The King's Singers

Josquin des Prez: Praeter rerum seriem
The Tallis Scholars
Peter Phillips, director

Orlande de Lassus: Magnificat secondi toni super Praeter rerum seriem
The Sixteen
Harry Christophers, director

Josquin des Prez: Benedicta es, coelorum regina

Manfred Cordes, director

Josquin des Prez: Stabat mater
Alamire
David Skinner, director

Hieronymus Vinders: O mors inevitabilis

Jeremy Summerly, director

The rhythmic impulse continues through Messiaen's hypnotic orchestral love song, the Turangalîla Symphony. Premiered by Leonard Bernstein in 1949, this Tristan and Isolde-inspired work is a celebration of sensual pleasure and boundless ecstasy.

Bertrand Chamayou makes his Proms debut in Mendelssohn's First Piano Concerto - composed when Mendelssohn was just 22 - while Schumann's jubilant Fourth Symphony is also the work of a composer exploring new musical maturity.

FRI 22:00 Sunday Feature (b0bbbm0g)
Philip French and the Critical Ear

The writer Philip French, who died in 2015 was the creator for Radio 3 of its first regular review programme, Critics' Forum. On the 70th anniversary of the station, Laurence Scott talks to those who knew Philip and explores his long involvement with arts programming on BBC Radio.

When he died in 2015, Philip French received many and heartfelt eulogies to his intellect and sheer enjoyment of film as deployed for many decades in the review pages of the Observer newspaper. But French's contribution to shaping the taste of Britain's radio listeners was less remarked upon. This programme attempts to redress that.

Critics' Forum was Radio 3's first formal review programme, but the network was, from its inception as the Third Programme in 1946, always the home of legendary critical voices, and this feature traces that pernickety pathway from the sometimes snooty 1940s and 50s to the more demotic 1960s when Philip French's creative voice began to be heard on the network. Laurence Scott also charts what happened after Philip French's retirement, and whether formal reviewers still enjoy power in the digital age, when it's easy to express and share an opinion on anything.

And friends remember him as a comrades-in-arms in the often turbulent world of artistic review, and talks to those who remember him even as a student arguing passionately the merits and demerits of the latest film releases while swinging down the lane acting out every Gene Kelly move from 'Singing in the Rain'...

Producer Simon Elmes.

FRI 22:45 The Essay (b081tkvk)

'Dear Virginia Woolf, Please accept my apologies. For a long time I thought you represented everything that's wrong with literature...'

How exactly does George Eliot do it? And why does she keep ignoring Ian's letters?
