The BBC has announced that it has a sustainable plan for the future of the BBC Singers, in association with The VOCES8 Foundation.
The threat to reduce the staff of the three English orchestras by 20% has not been lifted, but it is being reconsidered.

SAT 12:15 Music Matters (b09z5k4d)
Laurie Anderson

Tom Service meets American composer, and multi-media artist Laurie Anderson to find how music and language interacts in her work to create stories and define who we are which are just two of the themes running through her new book 'All the Things I Lost in the Flood', and her new album, 'Landfall', with the Kronos Quartet: projects born from her experiences of Hurricane Sandy which hit New York city in October 2012. Music writer and broadcaster Stephen Johnson discusses his new book 'How Shostakovich Changed my Mind' which explores his struggles with depression and how Shostakovich's tempestuous symphonies and soulful string quartets helped him and the composer's fellow Russians in the darkest of hours. There's a report from Moscow on the news that the British Council has to cease operations in Russia, and, Tom meets one of the most exciting young artists in New York today: Tyondai Braxton. In advance of the premiere of his new work 'Telekinesis', Tyondai shares his thoughts on electronic music, deep exposure to Morton Feldman, and how Stravinsky, Varese and other 20th century composers could be better taught in colleges and universities.

Produced by Richard Denison.

SAT 13:00 Inside Music (b0b0rv2t)
Inside Music with Tamsin Waley-Cohen

A new series in which each week a musician reveals a selection of music - from the inside. Today solo violinist and chamber musician Tamsin Waley-Cohen is inspired by conductor Carlos Kleiber's rehearsal technique, discovers the eerie effect of strings combined with wine glasses, and describes how a Haydn string quartet is an elaborate game for four players. Tamsin's choices range from a number by Irving Berlin sung by Billy Holiday, to flirtatious pairings of wind instruments by Bartok, and a keyboard concerto by J.S. Bach's most iconoclastic son.

At 2 o'clock Tamsin reveals her Must Listen piece - something she thinks everyone should hear at least once in their life. It's a work she describes as sumptuous, intimate and with some of the most gorgeous harmonies imaginable.

A Tandem Production for BBC Radio 3.

SAT 18:30 Opera on 3 (b09z5k4t)
Verdi's Luisa Miller

Placido Domingo stars in Verdi's rarely performed opera, Luisa Miller, from the Metropolitan Opera House, New York. It's a heart-wrenching story of fatherly love, based on the bond between Miller - sung by Domingo - and his daughter, performed tonight by Sonya Yoncheva. Verdi wrote this at a midway point in his career, so the score is full of youthful energy but mixed too with his characteristic passionate melodic writing.
Sonya Yoncheva sings the title role opposite Piotr Beczała in the first Met performances of the opera in more than ten years, and the Met Chorus and Orchestra are conducted by Bertrand de Billy.

Presented by Mary Jo Heath and commentator Ira Siff.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b0902h7t)
Nick Davies

Nick Davies is an expert in the art of deception - as practised by the cuckoo. He has spent his career studying that deceiving, murderous bird, and living in woods and wild gardens, even up in a mountain hut in the Pyrenees. He's a hugely influential scientist: since the late 1970s he's really helped define the field in behavioural ecology, and he's Professor of Behavioural Ecology at the University of Cambridge and a fellow of Pembroke College. But really, as he tells Michael Berkeley, he's happier not sitting in a library, but roaming the fens.

In Private Passions, Nick Davies reveals what he's learned about bird behaviour, and how birds use song to compete and, sometimes, collaborate to sing duets. He explains how some birds sing in poetry, some in prose; and why the blackbird in your back garden is a better songster than the nightingale. Music choices reflect his passion for the beauty of the natural world: Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, for instance, Vaughan Williams's Lark Ascending, and songs by Herbert Howells and Samuel Barber about the transformative power of nature. We also hear the song of larks, nightingales, blackbirds, pink-footed geese - and the croaking of natterjack toads.

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (b09z5qnn)
Exit Burbage - the man who created Hamlet

Imagine where we'd be without Shakespeare's plays. It's difficult to contemplate now. But it was thanks to another man that many of them were brought to life.
Today, Richard Burbage is a not a household name. But he should be. He's the man for whom many of the great Shakespearean roles were created. One of the founding members of the Lord Chamberlain's Men, playing at the newly built Globe in 1599, he's one of the foundations upon which British theatre was built. Andrew Dickson talks to leading actors, rummages among the archives and dissects some of the greatest parts in acting to discover Burbage's crucial role - and realises that without Richard Burbage, there could be no Shakespeare.

Social outsider Mrs Erlynne and respectable Lord Windermere share a secret. Are they having an affair? Confronted by young wife Margaret, her husband denies it. Unconvinced, she decides to leave him. A roller-coaster examination of 'good' and 'bad'. Deceit. Infidelity. Love. The tell-tale fan becomes a vital clue as the truth finally becomes clear. But who actually is the 'good' woman?

SUN 23:30 Unclassified (b09z5r84)
88 Keys - 88 Days

In part two of Unclassified, Elizabeth Alker looks back at some of the highlights of this year's Piano Day.

Piano Day was started in 2015 by Nils Frahm but it has since taken on a life of its own, becoming an international phenomenon with special one-off events and recordings happening all over the world. Since there are 88 keys on a piano, Piano Day is always celebrated on the 88th day of the year, and from Leeds to Lisbon, Shanghai to Shropshire and St Petersburg to Seoul, musicians and composers of all different disciplines came together this year on March 29th.

Elizabeth will celebrate and explore the possibilities of the piano, whether that's covering strings inside the piano with paper, hitting them with a £1 Ikea toilet brush or arranging new music for as many as eight pianos and tape loop. Expect the strange and the blissful, music that is freaky and gorgeous and definitely some sounds you've never heard before. There'll be brand new beautiful and experimental recordings from artists such as Nightports with Matthew Bourne, Poppy Ackroyd, Laurence Crane, Peter Broderick, Four Tet and Simeon Walker.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (b09z5x30)
Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), Slow Beginnings

Few composers have made their mark on the world of Opera like Giuseppi Verdi. He wrote a host of eminently hummable tunes as he rose to fame, paralleling the growing sense of identity which Italy was forging for itself in the 19th Century, and establishing himself as the most successful Italian composer of his generation. Tracing his life is riddled with difficulties however, due to the artistic licence Verdi himself used when taking about his own history. Donald Macleod pieces together the truths as he traces Verdi's life and music and finds a story of shrewd investments, run ins with the authorities, driving ambition, and emotional tragedy. In Monday's episode, Donald explores Verdi's youth and early musical experiences in Busetto including the Busseto "civil war" which erupted over his proposed appointment to the post of town music master and organist, his marriage to Margherita Barezzi - the daughter of his patron, and the early Operas he produced for La Scala in Milan which would make his name.

MON 19:30 Radio 3 in Concert (b09z5x3b)
Aurora Orchestra plays Suckling, Mozart and Beethoven

Martin Suckling received widespread critical acclaim for his poignant song cycle Candlebird at its premiere in 2011, which sets texts by Don Paterson. Tonight's conductor, Nicholas Collon, conducted that first performance and has championed the work ever since. This work precedes the next instalment in Aurora Orchestra's cycle of the complete Mozart piano concertos: No. 16 in D major, featuring pianist Charles Owen, making his debut with the orchestra. Concluding tonight's concert is Beethoven's Symphony No. 4. Situated rather awkwardly between the ground-breaking Third ('Eroica') and the monumental Fifth symphonies, the Fourth eschews fate and angst in favour of a sunny, cheerful character that often recalls the classical model of Haydn.

TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week (b09z5zs4)
Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), Giuseppina Strepponi

In Tuesday's episode, Donald explores Verdi's long relationship with the singer Giuseppina Strepponi as the composer's fame began to spread throughout Italy and further afield in Europe, a period during which he travelled greatly, spending time in Paris, and throughout Italy where newspaper reports of his death lead to claims of poisoning by a rival composer.

Shostakovich Symphony No. 6

Leif Ove Andsnes, piano
London Philharmonic Orchestra
Vladimir Jurowski, conductor

By the outbreak of the Second World War, Stravinsky was a musical omnivore - and as he started a new life under the Californian sun in 1940, everything he touched came out bold, provocative and sparkling new. Vladimir Jurowski opens the programme with Stravinsky's brilliant deconstruction of the Classical symphony, before Leif Ove Andsnes breathes fresh life into Debussy's early Fantaisie. Meanwhile, back in the USSR, Dmitri Shostakovich confronted an altogether bleaker reality. His extraordinary Sixth Symphony, written on the eve of the conflict, is a compelling, sometimes terrifying collision between pitch-black sorrow and sheer, uproarious farce.

Eric Chenaux and Ashley Paul in session

The latest Late Junction collaboration session, in which musical strangers are summoned to the BBC's Maida Vale Studios for a day of experimentation and creativity. Tonight's Frankensteinian combination of artists contains avant-garde balladeer Eric Chenaux and versatile experimental composer Ashley Paul.

A fixture of Toronto's DIY scene in the 1990s and 2000s, Eric Chenaux has travelled through punk, folk, jazz, and contemporary music outfits in his career. Recently he has engaged his unique guitar technique and sharp lyricism in more overtly song-based, and occasionally poppy, work. 'Slowly Paradise', his first solo album since 2015, was released in March.

An American based in London, Ashley Paul creates colourful, textural, intuitive music using saxophone, clarinet, voice, guitar, bells, and percussion. Having studied music at New England Conservatory, she has since been extensively involved in improvised performance, playing with artists such as Rashad Becker, Anthony Coleman, Loren Connors, Bill Nace, and Eli Keszler.

THU 12:00 Composer of the Week (b09z60hb)
Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), Politics

In Thursday's programme, Donald explores Verdi's ties with politics, investigating his involvement with the risorgimento movement in Italy, and works which show him in a broadly political light.

Ginastera: Panambi (complete ballet)

Tchaikovsky's tale of a jealous husband seeking revenge but who ultimately meets a bloody end is rarely heard in concert, but the music is amongst his most thrilling, dramatic and spine-chilling. Ginastera's Op 1, his ballet Panambi, was begun while he was an eighteen year-old student. Its scenario includes water sprites, a viper, an evil sorcerer and a beautiful heroine and takes place during a single night. The opulent sunrise which closes the piece demonstrates his confident and colourful handling of a large orchestra. The orchestra and Juanjo Mena are joined by Alban Gerhardt as soloist in Shostakovich's dark and intense Second Cello Concerto.

Alban Gerhardt (cello)
Manchester Chamber Choir (ladies' voices).
