The BBC has announced that it has a sustainable plan for the future of the BBC Singers, in association with The VOCES8 Foundation.
The threat to reduce the staff of the three English orchestras by 20% has not been lifted, but it is being reconsidered.

SAT 18:30 Opera on 3 (b07z43sq)
Massenet's Werther

Massenet's Werther

Vittorio Grigolo and Joyce DiDonato star in this performance of Massenet's dark drama of doomed love set against the stifling constrictions of a stultifying bourgeois marriage. Goethe's epistolary novel about the brooding Werther who develops an obsession for the unattainable Charlotte took Europe by storm in the 1770s. Massenet's operatic version focuses on the bitter-sweet pains and pleasures of a forbidden romance, with the lovers seemingly doing their best to make each other unhappy rather than accepting their fate. This revival of Benoît Jacquot's strikingly beautiful production for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden is conducted by Antonio Pappano. Presented by Martin Handley, including interviews with the conductor, director and members of the cast.

SAT 21:40 Between the Ears (b07z43ss)
Jump Blue

On 2 August 2015, the great Russian freediver Natalia Molchanova disappeared in Spanish territorial waters. Through sound, text and music, "Jump Blue" takes us to extraordinary depths in this immersive re-imagining of her final descent.

Apnea, or freediving without breathing apparatus, requires the few who practise it to encounter a profound stillness as their heart rate slows and their lungs contract. In the darkness of the abyss, on a single breath, they truly meet themselves. In Hannah Silva's lyrical text, voiced by actress Fiona Shaw, memory and sensation fragment and intertwine in shifting layers of consciousness.

"Jump Blue" is based on extensive interviews with many of the world's leading freedivers, including Natalia Molchanova's son Alexey.

Paterson Joseph

Paterson Joseph bunked off school when he was thirteen and spent the next two years going to the local library instead, reading his way from Agatha Christie through to Alexander Pushkin. It was a good training for someone who's become one of our most versatile and successful actors. Paterson Joseph is well known from numerous Shakespeare productions at the RSC and the Royal Exchange Manchester, and from Casualty and Dr Who. He achieved notoriety as the grotesque boss Alan Johnson in Peep Show. Paterson Joseph has recently been touring America with a show that he's written himself, about one of his heroes - the black 18th-century London grocer and composer Ignatius Sancho.

He talks to Michael Berkeley about why Sancho has been unjustly neglected, and what he thinks about "colour-blind" casting.

Music choices include Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, Louis Armstrong, Bach, Charlie Mingus, Billie Holliday - and Ignatius Sancho.

In 'Meet my Choir', it's the turn of singers from Epworth Choir in Lincolnshire to introduce us to their amateur ensemble.

SUN 17:00 The Listening Service (b07z72jb)
Colour and music

Tom Service listens to the world in glorious technicolor as he investigates the link between music and colour.

We put music and colour together all the time. A piece of music can be 'dark' or 'bright' or we could be singing the 'Blues' - but what does that mean? Professor Jamie Ward - an expert in synaesthesia - is on hand to help. While Tom delves into a world of musical colour from Messiaen and Copland, Scriabin and Ravel to David Bowie and Beyoncé to discover whether music can ever be colourful.

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (b07z72jg)
In Search of Yves Klein

Yves Klein is best remembered for his use of a single colour, Yves Klein International Blue, but his theories, extravagant performances, and his radical conceptions have largely gone unacknowledged. Emerging as an artist after three decades of war and destruction, Klein's work and ideas are characterised by a jubilant 'breaking-free' from the clench of the early 20th century-- by optimism, exploration and a desire to experience life beyond the physical world - the "immaterial' as he called it'. His exhibition of an empty gallery space or the use of materials such as gold leaf (which he threw into the Seine) or fire: he even used naked bodies as paint brushes, single him out for changing the face of contemporary art. His artistic work was completed in only eight years - he died of a heart attack aged 34.

To coincide with Tate Liverpool's exhibition, the British American artist, Liliane Lijn, who met Klein in the late 1950s in Paris, gives vividness and clarity to the work and short life of this artist who said, "My paintings are only the ashes of my art".

Contributors include:
The artist and Klein's former wife, Rotraut Klein Moquay, his 'model' Elena Palumbo, the artists Michael Craig Martin, David Batchelor, Ian Whittlesea and Arnaud Desjardin, his biographer Sidra Stich, art dealer John Kasmin and critic Jascia Reichardt.

SUN 21:00 Drama on 3 (b05qyjsw)
Vampyre Man

Joseph O'Connor drama about the close collaboration and intense friendship between Bram Stoker and the famous Shakespearean actor Henry Irving. Under Irving's reckless tutelage, the young Irish accountant struggled to keep the theatre afloat. Irving's demands were indomitable and over the years Stoker endured the actor's outrageous whims and acerbic tongue. And yet, Stoker remained mesmerised by him, absorbing his traits and suffering his humiliations all the while letting him grow in his imagination until he was ready to release him into the world as Count Dracula.

Joseph O'Connor is the author of eight novels: Cowboys and Indians (short-listed for the Whitbread Prize), Desperadoes, The Salesman, Inishowen, Star of the Sea, Redemption Falls, Ghost Light and The Thrill of it All. He has also written radio diaries, film scripts and stage-plays including the multiple award-winning Red Roses and Petrol and an acclaimed adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's novel My Cousin Rachel. Sir Neville Marriner

Sir Neville Marriner, invites Sean Rafferty into his London family home, site of many Academy of St Martin in the Fields rehearsals, to look back on a lifetime of music and cultural interests.

Sir Neville Marriner's formidable catalogue of recordings form the backbone of many a CD collection. He relives the Academy's most important moments, working with Milos Foreman on the soundtrack to Amadeus and games of table tennis in Hollywood with Jascha Heifetz. Surrounded by the ticking of clocks collected over many years, Sir Neville describes his early days as a violinist with the LSO (which include flour bombing the orchestral tour bus from a WWII plane) his passion for planting trees and how he would be happy never to have to conduct Vivaldi's Four Seasons ever again!

Tonight's concert comes from Wells Cathedral and the focus is on Paris, where Oliver Messiaen lived and worked for over seventy years. Both works on the programme were composed during the Second World War, and reflect Messiaen's profound Roman Catholic faith. Trois petites liturgies is an ecstatic three-part hymn to the divine presence in all things, whilst his Quartet for the End of Time was famously written and performed in a prisoner of war camp at Görlitz, and was inspired by a vision of angelic glory described in the Book of Revelation.

MON 22:45 The Essay (b07z7485)
All My Presidents, Ike and JFK

The President of the United States is the most powerful person in the world? Don't believe the hype. He - and maybe someday she - has limits imposed by the Constitution at home and in reality abroad. The President's greatest power is cultural. How a President acts in office and speaks to Americans shapes the society and peoples' memories of him.

In this series, Michael Goldfarb looks back at the Presidents of his lifetime, from Eisenhower to Obama.

He focuses on how their personalities, actions and words filtered down into ordinary Americans' lives

Professional historians have one set of opinions: in most surveys they tend to rank Eisenhower and Reagan above the others while Kennedy and Johnson are considered just above average. But the view from below - and from memory - might surprise the professionals.

In this episode, Michael Goldfarb recalls his family's close encounters with Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912), Episode 2

Donald Macleod continues his exploration of the life and music of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Coleridge-Taylor composed his setting of Longfellow's poem Hiawatha's Wedding Feast in 1898 when he was only 23, and it remained a hugely popular part of the choral reperoire throughout his life and long after his death in 1912. However, although his reputation will always be associated with this piece, which made his name famous throughout the musical world, it has sometimes overshadowed the beauty of much of his other work, such as his elegant and original Clarinet Quintet, composed while he was still a student.

BBC National Orchestra of Wales - Debussy, Ravel, Ibert, Stravinsky

Principal conductor Thomas Sondergard launches the new season with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, opening chapter one of a story-telling year of concerts. The intensely colourful Firebird was the first of Stravinsky's big three ballets for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Debussy's pipe-playing faun was famously brought to life for Diaghilev's company by the dancer Nijinsky, but the original score was a ground-breaking moment for the composer, establishing his suggestive and sensuous world of musical impressionism. Flautist Emily Beynon returns to Wales as the soloist in Ibert's lively concerto, and Sarah Connolly sings of the enchanted flute in Ravel's exquisite setting of poems based on tales from One Thousand and One Nights.

My favourite...Baroque concertos. Rob's selection includes a lively bassoon concerto by Vivaldi, a festive trumpet concerto by Torelli, and Bach's darkly intense Triple Concerto for flute, violin and harpsichord. He also chooses a pair of Concerti Grossi: the final (and Rob believes the loveliest) of Handel's Op. 6, and one of the Corelli set that was Handel's inspiration.

Take part in today's musical challenge: which location is the setting for this piece of music?

Rob's guest this week is the actress Noma Dumezweni. Noma is currently starring as Hermione in the West End play Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, the much-anticipated stage sequel to J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. She has recently played the title role in Linda at the Royal Court Theatre, receiving outstanding reviews. Her other theatre credits include Feast and Belong also for the Royal Court, A Human Being Died That Night at the Hampstead Theatre, The Fugard and The Market theatres in South Africa and Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York and Macbeth, Breakfast With Mugabe, The Winter's Tale and Romeo and Juliet for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Power of Three - the next episode in a 70-part daily series of pioneering sounds from the BBC Third Programme and Radio 3 archives presented by David Hendy.

This week, Rob places Music in Time, and explores the music of six pioneering African and African-American composers. Today, he focuses on Duke Ellington (1899-1974): legendary pianist, band leader and composer. His exalted levels of invention, his ability to spin profound melodies and harmonies and his ear for texture and rhythm marked him out as unique in the twentieth century. The Far East Suite, composed in collaboration with Billy Strayhorn, finds the Duke at his most seductive.

11am
Rob's artist of the week is the pianist Emil Gilels. Gilels was born in Odessa on 19th October 1916, and Rob celebrates the centenary of this great musician with dazzling recordings demonstrating the breadth of his repertoire. Gilels married power to finesse like no other pianist. His Mozart was elegant and incisive, his Beethoven rigorously argued, his Schubert graced by charm and clarity, and his Chopin, ever attentive to the music's emotional and intellectual aspects, making him in Rob's eyes the complete musician.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912), Episode 3

Donald Macleod continues his examination of the life and music of the Anglo-African composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, an internationally renowned figure in late Victorian times.

As part of Radio 3's commitment to connecting audiences with pioneering music and culture, this week we're exploring issues of diversity and access in classical music with a Diversity and Inclusion in Composition Conference at RNCM and a celebration of a wide range of performers and composers in our programmes, including Composer of the Week.

Coleridge-Taylor's mixed race heritage was unusual in Victorian Britain, but his talents as a musician seemed to protect him from much of the racism which might have been expected to come this way. However, when he fell in love with an English girl her family were outraged at the prospect of a 'mixed marriage'. Donald Macleod tells the story of the romance between Samuel and Jessie, and plays some of the music that they worked on together.

BBC Symphony Orchestra - Tchaikovsky

Live from the Barbican, the BBC Symphony Orchestra begin their three-concert Beloved Friend Tchaikovsky Project with Russian conductor Semyon Bychkov in the epic Manfred Symphony, and the curious Piano Concerto No.2 in G, Op.44.

Semyon Bychkov's earliest musical love as a child in St Petersburg was Tchaikovsky, a composer whose scores are for him endlessly rewarding, as pure and transparent as a beautiful lake. Tonight, as the curator of the Beloved Friend series, he and the BBC SO offer a rare chance to hear Manfred, one of Tchaikovsky's most dramatic creations. The Symphony explores the tormented Byronic hero of the title, his forlorn wanderings in the Alps, his death and redemption. "It seems to me the best of my symphonic compositions" Tchaikovsky explained in a letter to his patroness Nadezhda von Meck.

First, orchestra and conductor share the stage with fellow Russian, distinguished pianist Kirill Gerstein for Tchaikovsky's Second Piano Concerto. Less well known than the First Piano Concerto this is music charged with stirring melodies, and passages of great virtuosity for the soloist in the outer movements; but things really turn an unusual corner in the slow middle movement. Here the pianist is joined by solo violin and cello in a sort of triple-concerto, hushed with some of Tchaikovsky's most tender sounds.

THU 09:00 Essential Classics (b07z7cf0)
Thursday - Rob Cowan with Noma Dumezweni

9am
My favourite...Baroque concertos. Rob's selection includes a lively bassoon concerto by Vivaldi, a festive trumpet concerto by Torelli, and Bach's darkly intense Triple Concerto for flute, violin and harpsichord. He also chooses a pair of Concerti Grossi: the final (and Rob believes the loveliest) of Handel's Op. 6, and one of the Corelli set that was Handel's inspiration.

9.30am
Take part in today's musical challenge: trace the classical theme behind a track from the world of rock music.

10am
She won the Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role for A Raisin In The Sun for the Young Vic at the Lyric Hammersmith. Her film credits include The Incident, Dirty Pretty Things and Macbeth, and she has made appearances in television series including Casualty, Capital and Dr Who. Noma will be talking about her career and sharing a selection of her favourite classical music throughout the week.

This week, Rob places Music in Time, and explores the music of six pioneering African and African-American composers. Nigerian organist and composer Fela Sowande (1905-1987) is considered the "father of Nigerian Art Music". In 1934 he came to London, where he studied the organ and European classical music, and worked as a bandleader, BBC Theatre organist, and accompanist for Adelaide Hall. His African Suite for string orchestra includes traditional melodies and a popular highlife tune.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912), Episode 4

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is best remembered for his choral masterpiece Hiawatha's Wedding Feast. However, despite the fact that his best-known work meant that he kept returning to large-scale choral composition throughout his life, he was also a prolific composer of incidental music for the stage, and the chamber music that had marked him out as a remarkable student at the Royal College of Music. Donald Macleod explores some of his lesser-known music, with specially recorded contributions from the BBC Singers.

THU 14:00 Afternoon on 3 (b07z793f)
Thursday Opera Matinee, Rameau - Zoroastre

Today's Opera Matinee is a recording from this year's Montpellier festival of Rameau's Zoroastre. The story takes place in the ancient kingdom of Bactria and deals with the forces of Good, led by Zoroastre, contending with the forces of Evil, led by the sorcerer Abramane. Unusually for operas of the time the story is not taken from Classical mythology but from Persian religion. The historical Zoroaster was an important figure in Masonic circles and as with Mozart's The Magic Flute, there are obvious connections between the opera and Freemasonry. Presented by Penny Gore

LSO and John Eliot Gardiner - Mendelssohn

Posterity has delivered two contrasting verdicts on Mendelssohn's last orchestral work, the Violin Concerto, and the last of his four symphonies (confusingly, No.2). The concerto, staple of the repertoire, is on a par with the fresh and miraculous music of Mendelssohn's teenage years. But the Lobgesang (or Hymn of Praise), commissioned as part of the 400th anniversary celebrations of Gutenberg's printing press, has long been thought a slab of religiose, tub-thumping Victoriana, its choral finale inevitably inviting unflattering comparison with Beethoven's final symphony.

Tonight, live from the Barbican Hall, John Eliot Gardiner gives us a rare chance to hear the two works together and to reassess the Lobgesang (or Hymn of Praise) as he and the London Symphony Orchestra reach the end of their acclaimed Mendelssohn Symphony series. They're joined by Alina Ibragimova for the concerto and, in the Hymn of Praise, by Gardiner's Monteverdi Choir.

Presented by Sara Mohr-Pietsch

THU 22:00 Free Thinking (b07z7bnd)
Artes Mundi Prize, Harriet Walter, Amitav Ghosh

Artes Mundi was established in 2003 as a biennial contemporary visual arts initiative - the poet, author and playwright Owen Sheers and Catherine Fletcher, historian and New Generation Thinker, report back on the exhibition opening in Cardiff this week with work by the chosen artists including Britain's John Akomfrah, Nástio Mosquito and Bedwyr Williams.

Amitav Ghosh argues that fiction writers need to be bolder in tackling the big themes of today's world and why thinking about Climate Change is proving a challenge.

Harriet Walter has played Brutus and the King in Phyllida Lloyd's all-female Shakespeare productions of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and Henry IV; now she takes on Prospero in The Tempest. She talks to Anne McElvoy about giving herself permission to take on roles still normally given to men and the never-ending wonder of Shakespearian verse as the entire trilogy opens in London.

Plus - ahead of the American Presidential election, New Generation Thinker and historian, Ed Richardson pops up with the mesmerising story of how Hillary Clinton is very far from being the first ever female Presidential candidate.

Artes Mundi 7 runs at the National MuseumWales: Cardiff 21.10.16 - 26.02.17

THU 23:00 Late Junction (b07z7dk5)
Late Junction Sessions, Laraaji and Ela Orleans

Namaste. Fiona Talkington presents an exclusive session from American multi-instrumentalist and new age mystic Laraaji with Polish electronic music artist Ela Orleans, recorded at the BBC's Maida Vale Studios.

Known for his prowess both on the electric zither and as a leading figure in laughter meditation, Laraaji rose to fame when he was discovered busking in Washington Square Park by Brian Eno. He released his debut album Ambient 3: Day of Radiance in 1980 as part of Eno's Ambient series and has been a key figure in new age music ever since.

Ela Orleans' brand of experimental electronica has been described as both "haunt-pop" and "movies for ears" and has won her the admiration of Thurston Moore, among many others. Her recent work includes a remix of Laraaji classic Kalimba, but this one-off Late Junction Session is the first time the two artists have met in person.

Also in the programme, baroque guitar from Rolf Lislevand and Buchla synth adventures from Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Suzanne Ciani.

Produced by Alannah Chance for Reduced Listening.
