Jonathan Harvey's Wagner Dream

The dying Wagner reflects on his unfinished Buddhist opera, and is reconciled with his wife. Martyn Brabbins conducts a superb British cast, BBC Symphony Orchestra ensemble and IRCAM electronics.

For decades, Wagner pondered an opera on a Buddhist theme. Starting from the sketches he left behind, Harvey has built a rich operatic fantasy. It mingles scenes from Wagner's domestic life with the myth of Prakriti, whose love for the Buddhist monk Ananda is at first thwarted, but finally reaches a chaste fulfilment.

He joined the Liberal Party in 1975, and won a parliamentary seat in 1983, as the Liberal candidate for Yeovil. Shortly after entering the House of Commons he became SDP-Liberal Alliance spokeman on Trade and Industry, and then for Education. In 1988 he was elected leader of the new Liberal Democratic Party, which he led into two general elections in 1992 and 1997. He stood down in August 1999, was knighted a year later, and became a life peer after retiring from the Commons in 2001. From 2002 to 2006 he was High Representative for Bosnia-Herzegovina, having been a staunch advocate of international intervention there during the Balkan wars of the 1990s. Producer - Ellie Mant.

SUN 19:45 Sunday Feature (b016kdcd)
Leonardo - Master of Ceremonies

Following on from the National Gallery's major exhibition "Leonardo: Painter at the Court of Milan" which included some of the best known paintings by the great "Renaissance Man", we reveal a lesser known, but equally astonishing aspect of his work in Milan: his splendid pageants, masques and parades which he designed and directed as Master of Ceremonies. Charles Nicholl, Leonardo's biographer, is fascinated by these transient masterpieces, which are equally important to the development of Leonardo's work and which the artist carefully describes in his own writing. There are also vivid eye witness accounts. In this programme he re-imagines the most brilliant, Il Paradiso, in its original setting at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan.

These ephemeral, insubstantial creations may be dwarfed by the perennial celebrity of his paintings, but they contain in miniature that mix of art and science, of visual flair and mechanical ingenuity, which is typical of him. Comments in his notebooks sometimes suggest they were a distraction from more serious work, but distraction is a key mental process in Leonardo, a finding of unexpected new avenues to explore, and these trivial-seeming divertimenti have their own fascination; they are a counterpart to the profoundly dramatic quality of works such as the Last Supper.

David Warner is Prospero, with Carl Prekopp as Ariel, Rose Leslie as Miranda and Don Warrington as Gonzalo. Shakespeare's play of magic, romance and revenge. Broadcast as part of the Shakespeare Unlocked season.

Four hundred years after its first performance, Shakespeare's play still captivates audiences with its story of usurping brothers, monsters, magic and romance. Significantly it is also a world in which sound plays a crucial part, with Prospero's island being 'full of noises'. Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place, using illusion and skilful manipulation. A tempest brings Prospero's brother Antonio and Alonso, King of Naples to the island. Once there, Ariel and Prospero's machinations bring about the revelation of Antonio's evil cunning, the redemption of Alonso, and the marriage of Miranda to Alonso's son, Ferdinand.

MON 06:30 Breakfast (b01h6059)
Portraits Day - Petroc Trelawny

Portraits Day

In a special day of performance and debate, Radio 3 celebrates centuries of music that have painted pictures of personalities. From Breakfast to Jazz on 3, each piece reflects a person in music, creating an extensive musical gallery. Greta Garbo, Nelson Mandela, Marie Antoinette and Louis Armstrong will all have a place, alongside other famous and unknown figures.

All day presenters will be exploring the questions: who were the people behind the music, why did they inspire composers, and how are they captured in sound? Alongside musical repertoire, they will be joined by guests for debates on why portraiture is such a driving force in so many art forms; including painting, photography, poetry, sculpture and music. The composer Jonathan Dove will write a new musical portrait for later in the year as a BBC commission, and he will be joining the debate. Writers Aminatta Forna, Daljit Nagra, Louise Welsh, Osi Rhys Osmond and Paul Farley will feature throughout the day, with their descriptions of visual portraits which are significant to them.

Strauss Portraits

Portraits Day

For Portraits Day, Donald Macleod is joined by Professor Julian Johnson from Royal Holloway, University of London, to reflect on how self portraiture is represented by Richard Strauss's music. While Strauss as the hero of "Ein Heldenleben" encouraged some healthy debate when it was first heard in 1899, other works are more direct in their association. Dedicated to his wife and his son, Sinfonia domestica details a day in the life of the Strauss family, including its most intimate moments. While critics of the day found it vulgar, the public loved it, and Strauss was unashamedly unapologetic. He told journalists in 1921 that the work was among his favourites, since it showed him and his opinions most clearly.

Portraits Day

Fiona shares her insights into bringing fictional characters to life and music's ability to portray unique and inspiring individuals, real or imagined.

First performed in December 1953, Shostakovich's Symphony No 10 is a multi-layered portrait - of the composer himself through the use of his self-referencing DSCH motif, of the recently deceased Stalin who is represented in the second movement, and of Elmira Nazirova the student with whom he was in love and whose theme can be heard in the third movement.

MON 18:30 Tom Service's Audio Guide (b01hc438)
Tom Service leads the way through the techniques and methods that composers have used to represent and portray people in music. From the piquant representations for harpsichord by Francois Couperin to the evocative orchestral pictures of Elgar; the codified musical world of Alban Berg or the flash sketches of Virgil Thomson, composers over many centuries have devised cunning ways to shape musical abstractions to convey something of the essence of an individual. Tom investigates how, with the help of the harpsichordist Sophie Yates and the composer Robin Holloway, who is no stranger to the art of musical portraiture himself.

MON 22:45 The Essay (b01h61dj)
Here's Looking at Me

Episode 1

Maggi Hambling's self portrait of 1978 was made, according to the artist, when her life was 'in a muddle'. Spiritually in love with one person but having an affair with another, the artist/subject sits centre frame surrounded by the swirl of forms - a teapot and a naked torso, a penguin and a puffer fish, a card trickster and a big tabby cat.

How do these things come together to describe a life? Maggi Hambling takes us on a tour of the picture and reflects on the nature of portraiture - from the great masters such as Rembrandt and Titian to her own celebrated work depicting her friend George Melly.

MON 23:00 Jazz on 3 (b01h61dq)
Portraits Day

Jez Nelson presents a gallery of portraits in jazz, including a discussion with Alexander Hawkins around the origins of jazz portraits, starting with Duke Ellington. There are two new musical portraits by British reeds players, written and recorded especially for Jazz on 3. Tom Challenger's subject is the pioneering American saxophonist Ornette Coleman, a key innovator in the free jazz movement of the 1960s. He appears with his new group Brass Mask, which takes inspiration from New Orleans marching bands, contemporary jazz and improvisation, and hip hop. BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Shabaka Hutchings performs with a group put together for the occasion, including veteran avant-garde double bassist John Edwards and guitarist Otto Fischer, to portray Jean-Michel Basquiat. Beginning as a graffiti artist in New York in the late 1970s, Basquiat achieved worldwide renown over the course of his short career.

Also on the programme, Jez explores the iconic photographic portraits of jazz musicians past and present.

London Symphony Orchestra - Bartok, Szymanowski

Live from the Barbican Hall, London The LSO play two masterworks by Bartok and Szymanowski's headily erotic 'Song of the Night'
Presented by Ian Skelly
Conductor-composer, Pete Eotvos brings his keen sense of orchestral colour to the subtle string writing and eery percussion sounds of the Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste of 1936. Whilst violinist, Nicolaj Znaider's deeply thoughtful virtuosity should perfectly match the musical and emotional challenges of the Bartok concerto written soon afterwards. And both these work's haunting 'night music' scenes should make a perfect companion to Szymanowski's Third Symphony, The Song of the Night - a setting of the Sufi poet, Rumi inhabits a vast nocturnal landscape, in which a human spirit ascends to join with the divine, soaring into the ether. Languorous sensuality radiates through this all-encompassing score.

TUE 22:00 Night Waves (b01h6220)
Kate Summerscale

Victorian women cast a long shadow over our imaginations.... just think of Charlotte Bronte and Jane Eyre: or of George Eliot and Maggie Tulliver come to that. But do we do enough to differentiate between the fictional characters and the real women? What lies beneath our perceptions of either? Matthew Sweet embarks on an exploration of the Victorian woman's psyche with the writers, Kate Summerscale and Sarah Ruhl and the historians, Kate Williams and Lynda Nead. There's no guarantee of madwomen in the attic but there will certainly be talk about Kate Summerscale's new book, Mrs Robinson's Disgrace and of Elizabeth Jenkins' novel, Harriet -- a re-discovered classic about the infamous Penge murder in 1877. Sarah Ruhl is bound to talk about her new play which embraces that very Victorian problem hysteria and its not so well known remedy - the vibrator. And Kate Williams and Lynda Nead will range freely across the whole period and into the present where we now encounter New Victorians. Tune in to Night Waves with Matthew Sweet at ten o'clock and all will be revealed.

Producer: Zahid Warley.

In that time Gayford had ample opportunity to watch the artist in action - while he himself was being scrutinised in the finest detail, 'something between transcendental meditation and a visit to the barber's'.
Gayford explains how the portrait slowly came together, his reactions to the finished work and what he learned about Lucian Freud the man over their 'long dinner party for two' during its painting .

Claudio Abbado, the orchestra's former principal conductor and pianist, Maurizio Pollini, renew an old friendship in Mozart's Piano Concerto no 17 in G, K.453. Abbado then brings a lifetime's musical wisdom to Mahler's final symphonic utterance: the Adagio from his Tenth Symphony,. This Berlin concert also includes the suite from Lulu by Alban Berg, another composer with whom Abbado has long been associated. The orchestra is joined in the Berg by the young English-Austrian soprano Anna Prohaska, who opens the programme with two Mozart arias.

WED 19:30 Radio 3 Live in Concert (b01h627y)
Live from the Lighthouse, Poole

Khachaturian, Rachmaninov

Presented by Catherine Bott

Live from the Lighthouse, Poole

Nikolai Lugansky joins the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto. Also on the programme: Khachaturian's Gayaneh Suite and Walton's First Symphony.

Gayaneh, set in a Soviet Armenian cotton co-operative, is full of Khatchaturian's typically exuberant, exotic colours that slip from rich to garish, and towering climaxes that tumble into the brutal and bombastic.

With his Second Piano Concerto, Rachmaninov not only overcame his writer's block, but he found a new voice as a composer - one with a perfect knack for unforgettable tunes, dazzling pianistic effects, an effortless flow of ideas, and a very suave sense of style. It quickly became Rachmaninov's greatest hit and one of the most popular concertos of the twentieth century.

In musical terms, Walton's First Symphony is a landmark of English. Its turbulent emotions and high-voltage energy were the fruit of tempestuous events surrounding Walton at the time. It consists of an eloquent, dramatic first movement, a stinging, malicious Scherzo and a thoroughly melancholic slow movement. The finale, though, is totally different in outlook, an almost Elgarian ceremonial jubilation, as if a cloud has lifted.

Bittersweet Symphony

'Symphonies are a lot of work to write. Too much. One has to have something really appalling happen to one, that lets loose the fount of inspiration.' (William Walton)

Walton can be a composer who divides opinion but his First Symphony is generally acknowledged as a masterpiece. But what was his "appalling" inspiration for this turbulent and deeply felt work?

Louise Fryer visits some landmarks of Walton's 1930s London and talks to Walton expert Stephen Johnson and conductor Andrew Litton to tell a story of love, heartache, struggle and triumph.

Germaine Greer

Paula Rego's portrait of Germaine Greer is one of the most popular in the National Portrait Gallery. Greer describes the friendship and respect that made the portrait possible. She wouldn't have sat for a portrait had it NOT been Paula, whose work Greer hugely admires.
Greer explains her misgivings about portraiture which she considers 'a minor art form at best...made by artists working in a self-limiting genre'. Worst of all are portraits of women - which are vapid or flattering or soulless.
What then was the key to the success of this portrait and how did it come about?

Akram Khan

Akram Khan agreed to be the subject of a portrait for the National Portrait Gallery. But how is an artist chosen? And what are the difficulties of depicting a man who says 'there's no division between Akram Khan the dancer and Akram Khan the man'? A normal 'sitting' would make no sense.
So we follow Khan's story of capturing movement - how the traditional expressions of Kathak dance were interpreted by Fakhr in a contemporary way and made into a nine-panel sepia portrait which captured the dancer in action.
The result is a portrait that is both deeply rooted in tradition and yet vivid describes Khan in various moods and attitudes.

Strauss Portraits

Episode 5

Like many in the artistic community, the aftermath of the second world war was a period of introspection and practical difficulty for Richard Strauss. Having remained in Germany during the war, due to his dealings with the Nazi party, when hostilities ceased, he found himself under investigation. As he looked on his beloved country and the destruction of the opera houses he'd worked in over many years, he felt he was witness to the destruction of 2000 years of German culture. With Donald Macleod and guest Professor Julian Johnson from Royal Holloway, University of London.

FRI 19:30 Radio 3 Live in Concert (b01h629p)
BBC SSO - Mozart, Bruckner

Live from the Music Hall, Aberdeen

Mozart's Clarinet Concerto was one of the last pieces he completed before his death. Composed for the basset clarinet - lower pitched than the modern instrument - it has a very special colour, most obviously in the profoundly melancholic beauty of its slow movement. Here it's played by one of the world's leading clarinettists, Martin Fröst. Bruckner's Seventh Symphony is perhaps his most popular. In Donald Runnicles the BBC SSO is fortunate to have a Chief Conductor who understands better than most how to shape Bruckner's magnificent musical architecture, golden melodies and overwhelming climaxes.

FRI 22:45 The Essay (b01h625p)
Here's Looking at Me

Robert Winston

'I am hiding'. That's Robert Winston's observation about the portrait of him by Tom Wood which is in the National Portrait Gallery collection. 'I am like a person who is about to be found out'.
In this programme Winston - who is both a doctor, a scientist, an English professor, television presenter and a politician in the House of Lords - talks about the nature of portraiture and the purpose it serves.

He compares two images of himself - the painted version by Wood and a dramatic photographic image, also owned by the NPG, by Julia Fullerton - Batten. He reflects on the relationship between painting and photography in portraiture and the claims by both that they offer 'the truth'.
