SAT 07:00 Breakfast (b01f5bxz)
The Spirit of Schubert

The Last Year

The Spirit of Schubert - The Last Year.

With 200 hours of broadcasting and more than a thousand performances, over eight and a half days, BBC Radio 3 presents the biggest ever celebration of Schubert, his music and his life. Including performances of all his completed music and unique broadcasts of his unfinished works, Radio 3 devotes its entire schedule to one of the greatest ever composers. When he died at the age of 31 in 1828, he left a vast body of work, and with live daily performances across the UK, specially commissioned completions of his music and unprecedented analysis of the man behind the music, now, for the first time on this scale, BBC Radio 3 unravels the spirit of this prolific composer.

Throughout the day at 1100, 1400 and 1745 Tom Service presents The Schubert Lab - exploring the issues of the day and answering questions about Schubert's life and music.

Today we consider Schubert's last year. He died at the age of 31 in 1828 having written almost a thousand works. He'd contracted syphillis fives years before his death and the works of those final years reached an immediacy and intensity he'd not before discovered. His was a brief life that burned bright, and it's impossible to call these works - when many other composers would just be establishing themselves - a late period. Yet they touch such extraordinary depths, we have to ask how close did he know he was to death. With such a presence of emotion in these pieces, what does that music say about Schubert's understanding of the world. And is the music of the final year of his life an end or a beginning?

The Final Year

On the final evening of The Spirit of Schubert, Tom Service and Sara Mohr-Pietsch present performances of Schubert's late, great works by some of the world's fore-most interpreters of Schubert's music.

In a recording of a recital from the world famous Schubertiad in Schwarzenberg in Austria, pianist Paul Lewis performs three works Schubert wrote in the spring before he died, but left untitled and weren't published until 40 years after his death. The Three Piano Pieces D946 written in the spring before he died.

Baritone Christian Gerhaher and pianist Gerold Huber recorded at Wigmore Hall in London, perform the collection of songs published just months after his death, and given the title Schwanengesang or Swan Song.

The Takacs Quartet are joined by cellist Jan Vogler in their performance of Schubert's final chamber work. Composed just two months before Schubert's death, this performance of his sublime String Quintet in C D956. was recorded at last spring's Schwetzingen Festival.

Alfred Brendel introduces his performance of Schubert's final Piano Sonata in B flat D960. Written in the last months of his life, Brendel says of the sonata that this final one could be called the most beautiful and moving, the most resigned and harmoniously balanced.

SUN 20:30 Drama on 3 (b010glpd)
Kafka the Musical

Another chance to hear the magnetic performance that won David Tennant "Best Actor" at this year's inaugural BBC Audio Drama Awards for his part as Franz Kafka.

Murray Gold's new play starts from the suitably Kafkaesque premise that Franz Kafka finds he has to play himself in a musical about his own life. The play - or is it the musical? - introduces Kafka and the audience to some of the key characters in his life, Milena Jesenska, Dora Diamant and Felice Bauer.

Franz Kafka ..... David Tennant
Father ..... David Fleeshman
Mother ..... Joanna Monro
Milena ..... Naomi Frederick
Felice ..... Jessica Raine
Dora ..... Emerald O'Hanrahan
Barman / Singer / Doctor ..... Trevor Allan Davies
Newspaper Seller / Man ..... Brian Bowles

Music by Murray Gold
Directed by Jeremy Mortimer

Murray Gold's first radio play Electricity won the Richard Imison award for best new play after its broadcast on Radio 3 in 2001. It subsequently transferred to the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2004 and was performed with Christopher Eccleston in the lead role. Other plays include 50 Revolutions performed by the Oxford Stage Company at the Whitehall Theatre, London in 2000 and Resolution at Battersea Arts Centre in 1994, and Little Joe and His Struggle Against the World (Radio 3 2005). Murray Gold has been nominated for a BAFTA four times in the category Best Original Television Music, for Vanity Fair (1999), Queer as Folk (2000), Casanova (2006) and Doctor Who (2008). He wrote the theme tune for the Channel 4 series Shameless and scored the period drama The Devil's Whore. More recently Murray Gold scored another David Tennant series, BBC1's Single Father.

SUN 22:00 World Routes (b012fcp0)
Sayan Ring Festival

Andy Kershaw visits the Sayan Ring Festival in Shushenskoe in deepest Siberia. Modelled on the UK's WOMAD Festival, it draws artists and audiences from across the Russian Federation and beyond. Andy meets some of the headline acts, including local boys Huun Huur Tu from nearby Tuva, Daler Nazarov from Tajikistan, and veteran German world music band Dissidenten, and he gets a masterclass in throat singing.

The Sayan Ring Festival is located in Siberia's Sayan Ring mountains. Shushenskoe was a major tourist town during the Soviet era, as one of Lenin's places of exile - and as interest in Lenin declined in the post-Soviet years, the town turned to music and culture to fill its monolithic hotel. Huun Huur Tu is the area's best-known band, having taken their Tuvan throat-singing style all over the world. Daler Nazarov started out as a rock musician, spent years as a successul film music composer, and has now returned to touring with a band, this time with music strongly based on Tajik traditions. Berlin-based band Dissidenten have been called the 'grandfathers of world beat', and had great success in the 1990s with songs such as 'Fata Morgana'. Andy's throat-singing lesson comes from Albert Kuvezin, one of the pioneers of the popularisation of Tuvan music through his work with Huun Huur Tu and Yat Kha. The programme was recorded at the 2010 Sayan Ring Festival.

Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901)

Turning Points

Giuseppe Verdi was a leading figure in 19th-century Italian opera. But his impact on the cultural and political landscape of the country went much deeper. This week Donald Macleod investigates how Verdi achieved an iconic status which still holds good to this day, beginning with three operas which formed turning points in his career - the first established his international reputation, the second broke new ground with an operatic adaptation of Shakespeare's Scottish play, and finally, the work which, alongside Rigoletto and Il trovatore, represents a high-water mark in Italian operatic history.

MON 19:30 Radio 3 Live in Concert (b01f67z7)
Songs by Schumann, Brahms, Mahler and Wolf

Presented by Petroc Trelawny

Live from Wigmore Hall in London

Joan Rodgers and Roderick Williams join Roger Vignoles for a recital of songs by Schumann, Brahms, Mahler and Wolf.

Continuing his 'Perspectives' concert series, Roger Vignoles has enlisted two of the most highly acclaimed British voices of today for a programme of German Lieder. Soprano Joan Rodgers and baritone Roderick Williams spar in a selection from Hugo Wolf's set of exquisite miniatures known as the Italian Songbook: his settings of Italian folk poetry translated into German which allow the melancholy twilight and boisterous sunshine of their home country to shine through.

The folk poetry of southern Germany's rolling green hills inspired Mahler's 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn', which provides the bulk of the first half of tonight's concert, alongside a lovingly chosen smattering of songs by the two great friends Brahms and Schumann.

Schumann: Er ist's; Lied der Suleika; Das verlassne Mägdelein; Die Kartenlegerin

Brahms: Geheimnis; Nachtigall; Feldeinsamkeit; Botschaft

Mahler, from 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn': Rheinlegendchen; Ich ging mit Lust; Das irdische Leben; Des Antonius von Padua Fischpredigt; Wo die schönen Trompeten blasen; Lob des hohen Verstandes

interval

Rana Mitter talks to the Australian writer Peter Carey about his new novel The Chemistry of Tears. Carey has won the Man Booker prize twice, in 1998 with Oscar and Lucinda and in 2001 with True History of the Kelly Gang. The Chemistry of Tears is a nineteenth century tale of love, grief, and a strange automated swan that conceals a terrible secret.

Europe's museums are increasingly turning to countries such as China, Saudi Arabia and Qatar for help in funding exhibitions. Does this form of cultural diplomacy force curators to compromise their content? Martin Roth, Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum debates with Observer columnist Nick Cohen.

And what can the language of an obscure Brazilian tribe called the Pirahã tell us about the evolution of our own? Linguist Daniel Everett explores how different societies have produced dramatically different languages.

MON 22:45 Belief (b01f67zc)
Shirley Williams

The new Easter series of Belief opens with a conversation between two baronesses: Joan Bakewell and Shirley Williams. Shirley Williams was born in 1930. Her father, the philosopher and political scientist George Catlin, was a great influence. He bought young Shirley a copy of TS Eliot's Four Quartets when she was two years old. He also introduced her to the Roman Catholic Church. She has also been greatly influenced by the moral and political convictions of her mother the feminist and pacifist writer, Vera Brittain. In this programme Shirley Williams talks about the convictions that have motivated her life in politics - and particularly about the inspiration she has taken from the example of Jesus, the Second Vatican Council and the establishment of the Welfare State - a political event she remembers first-hand.

MON 23:15 Jazz on 3 (b01f67zf)
Tim Berne and Snakeoil

Jez Nelson presents US saxophonist Tim Berne and his new Snakeoil band in concert. Berne moved to New York in the 70s to learn from Julius Hemphill, whose gritty R&B sound Berne has integrated into a style that explores shifting rhythms and spiky melodic lines. In recent years he has played in alt-jazz groups alongside the likes of Jim Black and Craig Taborn, and the Snakeoil quartet marks his debut as a leader on the ECM label. The band explores Berne's texturally detailed compositions and includes clarinettist Oscar Noriega, pianist Matt Mitchell and drummer Ches Smith.

Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901)

'Viva Verdi!'

Donald Macleod investigates the challenges facing Verdi, while Italy was under Austrian rule, as he tried to cope with the strict censorship applied to operas such as Rigoletto and Un ballo in maschera, and the role played by Nabucco and La battaglia di Legnano in the movement for the unification of Italy. In the turbulent years of the 19th century, when Italy was struggling to gain independence from its Austrian rulers, Verdi's patriotic choruses seemed to embody the spirit of the movement for the unification of Italy, and an entire mythology has grown up around Verdi as hero of the Risorgimento. Donald Macleod investigates the role Verdi's music was thought to have played in Italy's fight for freedom, and the challenges he faced in his own battle with the Austrian censors.

BBC National Orchestra of Wales

Episode 2

Katie Derham continues a week of programmes showcasing performances by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

In a recent concert from the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea, we hear Mozart's final symphony, the 'Jupiter' - a work whose complexity and ambiguity of mood continued to perplex critics long after the composer's death. This is paired with an overture by a composer sometimes known as 'the Spanish Mozart': Juan Crisostomo Arriaga. The programme begins in Hungary with two 20th-century composers who settled in the USA. Bartok's final work, his Third Piano Concerto, is performed by Welsh soloist Llyr Williams. Miklos Rózsa led what he called a 'double life', composing both for Hollywood films (including Ben-Hur, El Cid and Hitchcock's Spellbound) and the concert platform.

In the Fourth Symphony by Sibelius, Danish conductor Thomas Dausgaard explores one of the composer's darkest works for orchestra. Composed during a period of personal and professional despair, it's a work that - as Sibelius said - has 'nothing of the circus about it'.

In 2008, after the sudden death of her brother, the film maker Anthony Minghella, Loretta decided to search for a career that put her whole self, and in particular her Christian faith, at its centre. She is now the director of Christian Aid. Live from the Barbican in London

Presented by Petroc Trelawny

Valery Gergiev conducts the Mariinsky Orchestra, Chorus and soloists from St.Petersburg soloists in Verdi's Requiem - one of the most popular choral works in the whole repertoire.

Written in memory of the great Italian poet, novelist and national hero Alessandro Manzoni, and first performed in 1874, Verdi's Requiem is his only large-scale work not intended for the stage. Despite this, it is unashamedly theatrical in style with sections of drama contrasted with moments of great tenderness.

THU 20:25 Twenty Minutes (b01fbd48)
The Story of the Cross

During their persecution under the Roman Empire, many early Christians used the sign of the fish as a symbol of faith and identity. It's said that the sign was used to mark secret meeting places or tombs and as a kind of code for identifying and communicating with other Christians. The sign of the fish - or "icthys" - is still used by some Christians today. But it's the simple cross - two intersecting straight lines - that has come to be the dominant symbol of Christianity. In this Twenty Minutes for Easter Jonathan Coffey uncovers the story of how this most profound of symbols came into being.

THU 22:00 Night Waves (b01f68m3)
Landmarks - La Grande Illusion

Anne McElvoy presents a landmark edition on the Jean Renoir film La Grande Illusion.

Popular with the audience and critics on its release in 1937, this masterpiece of French cinema tells the story of French officers trying to escape from a World War One prison. The film examines the themes of nationalism, duty, class and politics and has influenced a number of subsequent films including Casablanca and The Great Escape.

However La Grande Illusion had a troublesome history: it was declared Cinematic Public Enemy Number One by Josef Goebbels - who ordered all prints to be destroyed - and it was banned by the French authorities too. For many years it was thought lost forever, until a copy of it was re-discovered in the 1990s.

Film historians Ginette Vincendeau and Ian Christie and professor of French History Julian Jackson join Anne to examine what makes this one of film's classics.

But in this interview she talks to Joan Bakewell about the journey she embarked on at the age of twelve to the heart of the Jewish Reform Movement. She has just been appointed as the first Movement Rabbi to Reform Judaism in the UK - a post, she says, that doesn't so much set her up in opposition to the Chief Rabbi but rather sees her as his 'feisty' collaborator. She talks to Joan about the interplay between her commitment to equality and human rights and her understanding of the Jewish faith.

Today, after fourteen years serving as a priest in two troubled inner-city parishes, she is tipped to be one of the first women bishops. But, as she tells Joan Bakewell, she's in no rush to leave her two jobs - one ministering to MPs and their colleagues in the House of Commons and the other caring for a diverse and vulnerable community as a vicar in Hackney.
