SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show (b00wh2zk)
Opera Profiles

Rameau - Platee

Lucie Skeaping looks at Jean Philippe Rameau's comic masterpiece, the baroque opera Platée.

Rameau wrote the opera when he was in his sixties, for an entertainment at a court wedding at Versailles. The story tells of a foolish and ugly nymph who believes she is loved by Jupiter. The sense of the absurd permeates Rameau's score, with the composer and his librettist managing to create a wonderfully imaginative and colourful piece which turn many of the operatic conventions of the time on their head.

Rameau's contemporary, Melchior Grimm, considered the piece "sublime" while for Jean Jacques Rousseau it was a "divine" work. Even today it succeeds in firing the imaginations of opera producers and conductors, not least the French conductor Marc Minkowski, who explains why in the programme.

Tenth Anniversary

Episode 2

In the second of two programmes, Lucy Duran celebrates ten years of World Routes with highlights from a special event recorded at the BBC's Maida Vale studios. There are performances from Senegal, Azerbaijan, Mongolia, Peru and Turkey, as well as recordings from around the world taken from the Radio 3 World Music Archive. Producer Roger Short.

World Routes was first broadcast on Radio 3 in the autumn of 2000 - then on a Sunday night, it proved popular and was soon moved to Saturday afternoon. Presenting the programme since the beginning, is its anchor, the Grammy-winning record producer, teacher and world music expert Lucy Duran.
In 10 years, World Routes has broadcast sessions and live concerts with a complete "Who's Who" of world music artists from Youssou N'Dour, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Khaled, to Mariza, Caetano Veloso and Ravi Shankar.
Not just interested in the stars of world music, World Routes is on a mission to travel to the most far-flung corners of the planet to document and - in its own small way - preserve endangered musical traditions. In the past 10 years World Routes producers and sound engineers, along with Lucy Duran and a team of guest presenters, have left the comfort of Broadcasting House in search of real roots traditions. To date, the programme has visited some 51 countries, including 15 in Africa, 15 in Asia , and 9 in the Americas - countries as diverse as Haiti, Iraq, Belize, Vietnam, Georgia, China, Madagascar and Cape Verde. World Routes has recorded at festivals throughout the world including WOMAD (in the UK, the Canaries and New Zealand), the Jerusalem Oud Festival, the Fez Festival of Sacred Music, the Sayan Ring Festival in Siberia, and, in 2010, had its own residency at the Abril Pro Rock Festival in Recife, Brazil.

Goehr: Promised End

A meditation on Shakespeare's King Lear, presented by English Touring Opera, the production features Roderick Earle as Lear, Nigel Robson as Gloucester and Lina Markeby as Cordelia, with contemporary ensemble Aurora conducted by Ryan Wigglesworth.

The text for the opera is selected, distilled and re-arranged from Shakespeare's King Lear by the composer and the late Shakespeare scholar Sir Frank Kermode who passed away earlier this year. SUN 21:30 Sunday Feature (b00wh533)
From King to Pawn

Chess is known as the game of kings, but has an amazingly wide and enduring appeal, it cuts across so much that can divide us: age, class, nationality, race. It's a logical game often played in an abstract, notated form, and yet the fact that the pieces have characters and distinct roles somehow catches our imagination. This personification causes the game to be of interest even to those who don't play, necessarily, and it's often been depicted in art and fiction, many times as a metaphor. How does chess mirror life?

The novelist and occasional chess player David Szalay presents an examination of chess as an artistic metaphor in literature and modern art, and how powerful personalities in the game embodied the ideals and beliefs of their time. The trajectory of the game itself has been from the palace to the laptop, for the game is now most commonly played on computers or the internet.

With Nigel Short, Dr Irving Finkel, Frederic Friedel, Marilyn Yalom, John Healy, Dr David Hopkins, William Hartston.

Archive: Bobby Fischer, Boris Spassky, Dr Alekhine, Kasparov.

Music by Arthur Bliss.

SUN 22:15 Words and Music (b00wh535)
Monarchs

Kings and Queens have long possessed the imaginations and financed the careers of poets, playwrights and composers. Readers Samantha Bond and Simon Chandler play a host of historical kings and queens, from Shakespeare's Henry V and IV to Schiller's Queen Elizabeth I and Lewis Carroll's Queen of Hearts.

Royal coronations with their pomp and visual grandeur have inspired some of the greatest music ever written. Handel's Zadok the Priest and Walton's Crown Imperial provided the soundtracks to the coronations of George II and VI respectively; and we hear Samuel Pepys relate the incredible sight of '24 violins' at the coronation of Charles II in 1661.

The predicament of kingship was one of Shakespeare's most enduring fascinations, his Henry IV and V soliloquize in some of his greatest verse on the isolation of the ruler's plight, an isolation that may have been understood only too well by Shakespeare's great patron: Elizabeth I. Music by Donizetti and Schumann, and drama by Schiller capture the tragedy of Elizabeth's relationship with her passionate cousin Mary, Queen of Scots; whose last letter we hear, written on the eve of her execution.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (b00wh652)
Bach in Cothen

Episode 1

Bach spent just six years in service at the court of Cothen. It wasn't even a prestigious posting, in fact the ruling prince's ineptitude with matters political meant it barely figured on the map. But for the greatest composer alive it was just the ticket, a chance to explore fresh musical ground, and open himself up to new styles of music-making.

Not that it was all plain sailing. He might have loved the break from church music (gone was the grind of the Lutheran liturgy) but while away from court he suffered the greatest tragedy of his life, the death of his first wife. It was a hammer blow of course, but also turned out to be inspirational. Bach naturally turned to the needs of his many children, and it was while putting together teaching materials for them that he stumbled on some of his greatest musical ideas. New love came his way too, the talented singer Anna Magdalena, who became indispensable as copyist, musical collaborator, and cornerstone of his rapidly expanding family.

But for all the support of his employer, Bach did suffer a persistent case of itchy feet in Cothen. First in Hamburg, then in Leipzig, he found himself navigating appointment processes which would trump the bureaucracy of even the most convoluted public processes today. Eventually he got an offer he couldn't refuse, but only after composing some of the most accomplished music of his entire career.

In the first programme, after years of putting up with the petty feuding of his previous employers Bach arrives in the tranquil environment of his new posting. Donald Macleod explores his first months in the job, under the admiring gaze of a cultured and sympathetic royal boss who proves to be everything Bach could ask for.

MON 17:00 Words and Music (b00hkl1y)
The Ascent of Man

The idea of the ‘Ascent of Man’, triggered by the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth, became for me a thrilling passageway to a vast and multi-layered territory. After reading excerpts from his Journals and Autobiography, in particular those relating to his trip to South America –where my own roots are- a clear idea came to mind: to portray in ‘Words and Music’ the many different types of journeys he made throughout his life. I mean not only the voyage on board the Beagle, of course, but his other two parallel journeys: the intellectual and spiritual transformations Darwin so bravely went through as he travelled, in body, mind and spirit, in search of the origins of nature.
The texts I’ve selected here to illustrate this three-fold journey, read by actors Henry Goodman and Jemima Rooper, include excerpts from Darwin himself, but also from some Victorian poets, contemporary of the scientist, eager to reflect the influence his innovative vision brought to their craft.
A crucial and modern contribution to the mix though, comes in the shape of readings by Ruth Padel, a prize-winning poet and herself direct descendant of Darwin, who’s written about nature and who contributes here –the way I see it- by putting some of his famous ancestor’s concerns into today’s context. Her readings include excerpts from her latest book, ‘Darwin: A Life in Poems’, just published to coincide with the famous scientist’s anniversary.
Now, music becomes another voice in this journey: the taped songs of the biggest sea mammals in Hovahaness ‘And God Created Great Whales’, or the ritual dance for the killing of a snake in Revueltas’ ‘Sensemayá’, or the subliminal message of ‘Koyaanisqatsi’ -‘world out of balance’-, Philip Glass’ soundtrack inspired in the language of a native American tribe. They all represent nature and the world that so much excited Darwin.

MON 21:15 Night Waves (b00wh6bx)
Danny Boyle, Nev Schulman, Stephanie Shirley, Just Deserts

Matthew Sweet talks to Oscar-winning British film maker, Danny Boyle, and examines British philanthropy in a time of government cuts. Matthew also hears the first of Night Waves' 'Ideas of the Year' as thinkers join the programme to discuss one thing they think has bubbled under the surface of 2010.

Matthew Sweet talks to the film directors Danny Boyle and Nev Schulman about their latest films, '127 hours' and 'Catfish', and with the film critic Nigel Floyd, considers where the boundaries lie between fictional and documentary truth.

If 2010 is remembered as the year of cuts, then 2011 will be the year of philanthropy. At least, the government hopes so and the idea of the big society is, in part a call for greater philanthropic giving in our culture. This week Night Waves examines the phenomenon of British philanthropy, beginning with Dame Stephanie Shirley, the highly successful entrepreneur and businesswoman who's now devoting her retirement to charitable work.

And Night Waves looks back on the big political, cultural and philosophical ideas of 2010, a panel with the psychotherapist Susie Orbach, the Professor of Classics Edith Hall, and political theorist Kenneth Minogue, discusses 'just deserts' - do we, and should we, get the kind of life we deserve?

Producer: Lisa Davis.

MON 23:00 The Essay (b00wh6bz)
Visions of Mary

John Haldane

Professor John Haldane of St Andrews University looks at the origins and meaning of the veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Catholicism, considering her unique status as chief among the saints, and looking at how her elevation has been received and sometimes criticised. On the only two occasions on which papal infallibility has been invoked it was in the definition of dogmas regarding Mary: first, the Immaculate Conception (that she was conceived without the stain or wound of original sin) defined in 1854, and second the Assumption (that at the end of her life she was 'taken up' body and soul into heaven), defined in 1950. Yet Mary has humble beginnings in the gospels where she is only mentioned in a handful of passages, which makes the large, complex and ornate edifice of Catholic 'Mariology' all the more intriguing in its evolution. Professor Haldane explores the early textual sources and art history of her rise.

TUE 21:15 Night Waves (b00wh736)
Compassion, David Harding, Festive Theatre, Immersiveness

Anne McElvoy talks to Karen Armstrong about the need for greater compassion in the world and how the teachings of all the religious sages can help solve the problems of modern life.

Night Waves' examination of Philanthropy in the UK continues with Anne talking to David Harding. The Hedge Fund millionaire gave £20 million to the Cavendish Laboratory this year.

Night Waves theatre Critic Susannah Clapp joins us to explain why this has been a break through year for festive theatre.

And Anne continues Night Waves' week-long quest to find "The Idea of the Year". After last night's discussion of 'just deserts' tonight we look at the current cultural buzz-phrase 'immersiveness'. From the arts to TV to education does it suggest a world of excitement, of accessible and visceral involvement? Or is it a trend that champions sensation rather than thought; the immediate and stylish over the substantial and contemplative. TUE 23:00 The Essay (b00wh6l2)
Visions of Mary

Helen Bond

The Virgin Mary cuts a familiar figure to us in her iconic blue cloak, but what would life be like for the original peasant girl from Nazareth? Senior lecturer in New Testament history at New College, Dr Helen Bond takes us into the turbulent times of the 1st century, and the Roman repression of Jewish revolts. We look at the traumas and life events that the real Mary might have faced. What kind of social stigma could she have faced for her unusual pregnancy? What manner of religious duties would she be expected to carry out as a Jewish mother? Is it possible to glean anything from texts and archaeology to bring us closer to her? Can we think more about how her life experiences might have shaped her mothering of Jesus?

WED 17:00 Words and Music (b00rs4zx)
The Doors of Perception

The unifying idea behind this edition of Words and Music is that reality is variable and personal. The texts, read by Jim Broadbent and Miranda Richardson, cover the best part of 2000 years from the Bible's Book of Revelation, to last year's "Late" by Christopher Reid.

It's striking that, despite the various ways of coming to that reality (religion, a refined sensibility, illness, mind-altering drugs), these visions share many similarities. The weird animal hell-on-earth of Revelation is echoed in Thomas De Quincey's opium nightmares; Baudelaire's bedroom (while he's on a high, at least) is as perfect and intoxicating as the heavenly paradise described by the fourth-Century St Ephrem. Coleridge's trippy "Kubla Khan" features another Oriental paradise with hints of something disturbing but distant; Alice's mushroom has very peculiar effects. The experience of Julian of Norwich, alternating between ecstasy and pain, and the fevered ravings of Sylvia Plath are strangely similar; Blake sees the infinite in the small and apparently insignificant, and after a long marriage Christopher Reid still feels the presence of his dead wife. Funnily enough, it's Aldous Huxley with his rather too well organised mescalin experiment who stays earthbound. The music ranges from Bach to Zappa, by way of (among others) Mahler, Ravel, Debussy, Messiaen, Crumb and Cage.

Producer: David Papp.

WED 21:15 Night Waves (b00wycwt)
Alan Lomax, Will Self, Whistle and I'll Come to You, Philanthropy in the Arts

Philip Dodd discusses Alan Lomax, the pioneering oral historian. He created an irreplaceable archive of early American folk and Blues recordings. These included interviews with Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Muddy Waters and Jelly Roll Morton. Lomax's biographer John Szwed talks to Philip and plays some of Lomax recordings.

From 1937 to 1942, Lomax was Assistant in Charge of the Archive of Folk Song of the Library of Congress. He took his microphone into the field and collected folk music from the United States, Haiti, the Caribbean, Ireland, Great Britain, Spain, and Italy, assembling a treasure trove of American and international culture. But his techniques applied to social history as well. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Lomax took his recording machine into the streets to capture the reactions of everyday citizens.

Will Self is the latest guest in Night Waves' selection of Ideas of the Year. After previous programmes heard about 'Just Deserts' and 'Rescue', Will nominates 'Family Britain' as the key to culture in the last twelve months.

A.N. Wilson reviews BBC2's adaptation of the M.R. James ghost story 'Oh, Whistle and I'll come to you my lad' starring John Hurt which is broadcast on Christmas Eve.

And Philip concludes Night Waves' assessment of the rise of philanthropy in 2010 by discussing the proper role of philanthropy in the arts. He's joined by Erica Whyman, Chief Executive of Northern Stage, Art Historian Evelyn Welch and David Emerson, Ex-actor and Chief Executive of the Association of Charitable Foundations.

WED 23:00 The Essay (b00wh738)
Visions of Mary

Dr Mona Siddiqui

It might surprise you to know that the Virgin Mary has her own sura in the Qur'an, where she's mentioned more often than she is in the Gospels. When the author was pregnant, her mother advised her read it over every day for comfort and to bless the unborn child. Here we find the story of the annunciation and the birth of Jesus, but they're very different to the lessons being read in churches all over the world at Christmas, because Mary plays a very different role in Islam and gives birth to a very different baby. The Islamic Jesus is fully human and a prophet, yet he is still the child of a sinless mother and immaculately conceived. He just isn't the Son of God. Dr Mona Siddiqui of Glasgow University meditiates on Mary in Islam.

Free Thinking 2010

Emancipation: A Listener's Guide

Jazz star Soweto Kinch puts down his saxophone and steps up to the lectern to deliver a lecture as part of Radio 3's Free Thinking festival: Emancipation: A Listener's Guide.

Nominated for the Mercury music prize and twice winner of a MOBO award, Soweto Kinch is a saxophonist, composer, rapper and Oxford history graduate who was inspired to turn to jazz following a meeting with the trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. "He's number one in a field that he's made his own" says one leading jazz critic.

Soweto's work has drawn on the lives of residents of a Birmingham tower block, he has set 1950's novel Absolute Beginners to music, and he's even remixed the voice of newsreader Moira Stewart. Now he shows his intellectual prowess as well.

At Free Thinking Soweto delivers a lecture on the relationship between music and emancipation, arguing that music needs to reclaim its political meaning and power. With examples including Sonny Rollins "Freedom Suite", Charles Mingus "Fables of Faubus", and "Clampdown" by The Clash, he calls for artists to create music that changes society. He also tells presenter Rana Mitter why his parents named Soweto and why he agreed to join the backing band to The X Factor predecessor Pop Idol.

Recorded in November front of an audience at the Sage Gateshead as part of the Free Thinking festival, in an event hosted by Rana Mitter.

Producer: Tim Prosser.

THU 23:00 The Essay (b00wldtq)
Visions of Mary

Prof Miri Rubin

Professor Miri Rubin explores the Jewish response to the Christian cult of the Virgin Mary, and looks at how this devotion was used against medieval Jews in hurtful, powerful and prejudiced ways. Gentle Mary meek and mild became an instrument of anti-semitic propaganda, the heroine of miracle tales about converting Jews, the emblem of Christianity triumphant against Judaism. It's a painful legacy which can make ecumenical rapprochement difficult.

FRI 23:00 The Essay (b00wldzt)
Visions of Mary

Prof Diarmaid MacCulloch

"How do you solve a problem like Maria?" sang the nuns in 'The Sound of Music', but 16th century Reformers faced a far trickier Maria problem. They were trying to both have their cake and eat it on the Blessed Virgin Mary: they wanted to be exponents of the new doctrine of sola scriptura (that the Bible contains all knowledge necessary for salvation and holiness), without jettisoning the Catholic understanding of the creeds. Very important things that lay at the heart of traditional Christianity could not be shown explicitly in the Bible. One of those core beliefs was that of the perpetual virginity of Mary. A few moments of scriptural perusal can tell you that this is a knotty proposition, as the Bible mentions Jesus's brothers and sisters, but to throw overboard centuries of church tradition was just too much for most Reformers. Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch, author of the award-winning book, 'A History of Christianity' shows how this seemingly abstruse matter of doctrine actually opens a window onto the psyche of Reformers and their relationship with Mary.
