The BBC has announced that it has a sustainable plan for the future of the BBC Singers, in association with The VOCES8 Foundation.

Theodorakis - Greece's Musical Revolutionary

85 this year, Mikis Theodorakis is best known for the music to 1974 film Zorba the Greek, but as Miranda Hinkley discovers, there's also a wealth of chamber, opera and symphonic music. Part of the resistance during the Second World War, imprisoned during the Greek Civil War, exiled during the military dictatorship, his story mirrors that of modern Greece. And he's been responsible for a musical revolution, a uniquely Greek sound. Mikis Theodorakis is joined by singers Maria Farantouri and Marios Frangoulis and by violinist Georgos Demertzis, to look back on a 60-year career.

Presented and produced by Miranda Hinkley. Executive Producer Alan Hall.

SAT 14:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert (b00q904p)
Mark Padmore/Andrew West

Mark Padmore pairs one of Henze's most colourful and exotic creations, "Six Songs from the Arabian", full of witches, monsters and shipwrecks, with Schumann's sensitive settings of Hans Christian Andersen.

Märzveilchen Op. 40 No. 1
Muttertraum Op. 40 No. 2
Der Soldat Op. 40 No. 3
Der Spielmann Op. 40 No. 4

The composer presented the writer with a copy of these songs, writing that Andersen may very well find the settings strange. Schumann said that he himself found the texts strange at first, but as he began to understand the poems and their strangeness more deeply, his music became increasingly strange as well.

SAT 18:00 Opera on 3 (b00qbzg3)
Live from the Met

Verdi's Stiffelio

Verdi's opera Stiffelio had a troubled history. The predominantly Catholic Italy of the mid-19th century was not ready for a story of adultery in the home of a Protestant minister and the opera was severely censored at the time of its première in 1850. Forced to extensively revise his opera, Verdi then lost interest in it and did his best to destroy all copies of the original manuscript. It wasn't until 1960 that a complete score of Stiffelio was discovered, and in 1993 it entered the repertory of the Metropolitan Opera with tenor Plácido Domingo in the title role. Domingo now takes up the conductor's baton whilst Argentinian tenor José Cura sings the role of Stiffelio, the troubled clergyman who struggles between his ideals and the urge for revenge. American soprano Sondra Radvanovsky performs the role of his wife, Lina. From the opening scene, the young Verdi's originality is apparent as he begins Stiffelio with a long, ambitious septet and goes on from there with that mixture of dramatic force and melodic richness that made him the most successful composer of Italian opera in the second half of the 19th century.

Presented by Margaret Juntwait with guest commentator Ira Siff. Backstage interviews with members of the cast and the Met Quiz during the intervals.

Stiffelio: José Cura (tenor)
Lina: Sondra Radvanovsky (soprano)

SAT 21:15 Between the Ears (b00qbzg5)
The Chekhov Challenge - The Sound of a Breaking String

One of the most enigmatic stage directions in all drama appears in Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard:

'A distant sound is heard. It appears to come from the sky and is the sound of a breaking string. It dies away sadly.'

Between the Ears focuses on the many attempts to produce this sound, ranging from musical saws to gun-shots. Guests include Paul Arditti, who mixed industrial, musical and bird sounds for the production by Sam Mendes, and musician Leafcutter John, who accepts Radio 3's own Chekhov Challenge, recording his experiments to find a resonant breaking string sound for the 21st century.

SAT 22:30 Hear and Now (b00qbzgm)
James Dillon/Jonathan Harvey

Robert Worby introduces new music for violin and for string quartet, in conversation with virtuoso violinist Irvine Arditti of the Arditti Quartet.
The string quartet is often said to be one of the most challenging mediums to write for, and anyone attempting it today is standing on the shoulders of giants, going back to Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn.
But James Dillon and Jonathan Harvey can certainly claim authority in this medium, each of them having written several substantial string quartets, and their latest quartets are featured in this programme, with Dillon's new quartet recorded here in its very first performance, from the 2009 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. Harvey's fourth quartet, recorded at the same event, extends the medium with a virtuosic electronic part, transforming the string sounds and projecting them to all corners of the concert hall. As the composer describes it, "All sorts of psychic metamorphoses are undergone by the string sound; it seems to enter into spaces like the centre of the earth..."
The programme also includes Harvey's Scena for violin and orchestra, in which the solo violin takes on a dramatic role like an operatic singer; and Hilda Paredes' violin solo in memory of another violinist, Thomas Kakuska.

Peter Phillips and the Tallis Scholars have specialised in the performance of Renaissance polyphony for over thirty years. Lucie Skeaping explores with Peter and the group some of the qualities and the ethos of Renaissance polyphony. She learns how working with this music has encouraged the group to find a distinctive sound and performing methodology. The programme includes extracts from some of the Tallis Scholars' many recordings.

Vivaldi and Bach Double Violin Concertos

Johann Sebastian Bach's Double Violin Concerto remains one of his best loved and most famous works, but concertos for more than one instrument weren't a novelty by any means. Vivaldi had written many works for differing numbers of soloists, from one to 13, and had written double violin concertos of his own, including one as part of his famed 1711 publication L'estro armonico.

For today's Discovering Music, Stephen Johnson is joined in Cardiff's Hoddinott Hall by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and conductor Nicholas Kraemer, and by Violinists Jennifer Pike and Lesley Hatfield and organist Daniel Hyde to explore these two great works of the Baroque.

SUN 20:00 Drama on 3 (b00qbzpk)
The Seagull

THE SEAGULL
Siobhan Redmond and Paul Higgins head a cast of leading Scottish actors in this new production of Chekhov's classic drama. In part a tragic play about eternally unhappy people, Chekhov has always surprised his audiences by viewing it as a comedy, poking fun at human folly. All the characters are dissatisfied with their lives. Some desire love. Some yearn for success. Some crave artistic genius. But no one ever seems to attain happiness. When famous actress Irina Arkadina arrives to spend the summer on her brother Sorin's country estate, tempers inevitably get frayed.

Adapted for radio by Stuart Paterson from the first ever English translation by George Calderon.

First broadcast in January 2010.

SUN 21:50 Sunday Feature (b00qbzr5)
Songs of Trebizond

The Black Sea Region of Turkey was once the ancient kingdom of The Pontus and its Christian orthodox inhabitants subsequently survived and thrived throughout Byzantine and Ottoman times. But for centuries this culture, centred on the great trading port of Trebizond on the caravan route to Persia, was living on borrowed time. The 1923 exchange of populations between modern Greece and Turkey, resulting from the Lausanne Treaty, gave rise to the Pontic nationality splitting amongst multiple citizenships. The shepherds in the high mountains behind the city of Trebizond who for more than a thousand years had driven their flocks up onto the high plateau in summer and back to the narrow coastal plain in winter, sometimes adopting a Christian persona, sometimes a Muslim one, disappeared and the economy has never really recovered. The architectural jewel that was Trabzon has become tower blocks. The final insult came five years ago with the much opposed construction of a coastal motorway which has chopped this once great maritime city off from the Black Sea. The isolation that kept ancient cultures protected has gone.

Tom de Waal traces some of what has been lost to the Soumela Monastery where every August 15th people of Pontic descent from across the globe come to remember the feast of the Virgin. Here there is a collision of Russian Turkish and Greek interests which provides a lesson in modern regional politics. But connecting all of these disparate people is music: the Greek Lyre and the Turkish Kemence. They play the same, they dance the same. Culturally connected and politically divided this is a story of people who are really cousins, or even brothers, but cannot quite bring themselves to admit it.

(Repeat.)

Producer: Neil Trevithick.

SUN 22:35 Words and Music (b00qr6km)
Face

Another chance to hear a revised repeat of Words and Music on the theme of the face.

The face of our mother is the first thing on which we focus when we are born. From then on, faces take on a huge significance throughout our lives. We communicate all our emotions through our faces, through our eyes and with words through our lips. Through our noses we can detect not just when it's time for dinner, but whether somebody is frightened, depressed or attracted to us. This programme explores this uniquely human phenomenon, surveying all aspects of the face - beauty, youth, ugliness, love, fear. Then there are the barriers put up when the face is not as it should be, when one cannot see, or one encounters a disfigured face, or eyes that tell a terrible story.
Highly acclaimed actors Michael Maloney and Lesley Sharp read poems and texts by Christina Rossetti, Christopher Marlowe, Ovid, George Barlow and, of course, extracts from Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray". And there is music by Gershwin, Hildegard of Bingen, Tavener, Purcell, Ivor Gurney, Dowland and George Michael.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (b00qc01x)
William Walton (1902-1983)

Bright Young Thing

William Walton is perhaps best defined by a series of paradoxes: the pillar of the British Musical Establishment who lived in voluntary exile; the king of the grand, filmic gesture who harboured deep insecurity; the socialite and ladies' man who often preferred to be alone. Walton hid himself behind an acerbic wit- a statement which has also been made about his writing. Donald Macleod follows him through the distinct eras of his life and explores the many sides to the man and his music.

Snatched by the Sitwells from what they saw as an ignominious future as a schoolteacher in Oldham, William Walton became known in London as the most precocious British composer of the 1920's. Donald Macleod delves into the curious world with which Walton became involved.

MON 21:15 Night Waves (b00qc027)
Peter Carey/The Music Instinct/Gwyneth Lewis/Catcher in the Rye

Matthew Sweet talks to novelist Peter Carey. Having won two Booker prizes for his novels Oscar and Lucinda and The True History of the Kelly Gang, Peter Carey will be discussing his latest novel, Parrot and Olivier in America. The novel is set in formative America as the two eponymous heroes - one a printer's son from Devon, the other a French aristocrat form an 'unlikely and everlasting bond' after being displaced from revolutionary France and the Old World. The book is described as an improvisation on the life of Alexis De Tocqueville - the great French Chronicler of American democracy - and provides a timely exploration of the emergence of America and American ideas about democracy and freedom in theory and in practice.

Science writer Philip Ball's new book, The Music Instinct, discusses how listening to music is more than hearing it, and enjoying it; we are performing a cognitive feat of astounding complexity. He also argues that we all have an instinct for music and it's a part of what makes us human. Musicologist Grenville Hancox talks about Philip's latest research, and how music can impact upon our mental health.

And the first Welsh Poet Laureate, Gwyneth Lewis, reads from her book length poem A Hospital Odyssey, a surreal fantasy voyage through illness and healing.

It's set in a hospital basement, known in the poem as The Other World. The epic confronts her husband's battle with cancer through mythical confrontations with characters from knights and physicians to the founder of the NHS, Aneurin Bevan.

After the death of JD Salinger last week, guests Bidisha and the historian Diane Purkiss discuss how the protagonist of Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield, established an adolescent voice that still lingers, and ask how adolescents are developing in film and literature.

TUE 21:15 Night Waves (b00qc098)
Don McCullin

As the war photographer Don McCullin has a major retropspective of his work at the Imperial War Museum North, Rana Mitter looks at the state of photography today as both art form and tool of reportage .

For more than 50 years, Don McCullin's images have shaped our awareness of modern conflct and its consequences. A unique collaboration between McCullin and the Imperial War Museum has resulted in a major new exhibition containing over 200 photographs, contact sheets, objects, magazines and personal memorabilia, which show how war has shaped the life of this exceptional British photographer and those across the globe over the last half-century.

Rana and guests discuss whether the emergence of the amateur mobile phone and internet as a vehicle for up to the minute imagery of events such as the Haitian earthquake and the political conflicts in Iran denuded traditional photography like McCullin's of its power. Or should we think of them as adding exciting possibilities to the medium? The programme also looks at how the restrictions on the taking of photography by terror legislation has impacted on the ability of photographers to represent the world around them.

Rana also discusses the status of photography as an art form asking whether it has lost ground and standing with our major institutions and the public at large.

WED 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00qc0fd)
Beethoven/Barenboim

Beethoven: Piano Concerto No 1

Presented by Martin Handley.

"Beethoven and Schoenberg have left audible fingerprints on the scores of all their successors, and will most likely continue to do so for as long as music is being written."

So says Daniel Barenboim about the two composers whose works he performs with the Berlin Staatskapelle in four concerts being broadcast in Performance on 3 between February the 3rd and 9th. Recorded at London's Royal Festival Hall the pianist, conductor and humanitarian plays all five of Beethoven's Piano Concertos and also conducts some of Schoenberg's seminal orchestral works.

Both Beethoven and Schoenberg are composers who simultaneously summarised the musical traditions that went before them whilst pointing to radical new developments and Barenboim see parallels between them in forging new paths that were to have "lasting, irrevocable consequences for the future of composition."

In the first concert of the series, Barenboim pairs works written a century apart when both composers were in their mid 20s. Beethoven's vivacious C major Piano Concerto was one of the works which the young enfant terrible wowed the aristocracy of Vienna in the 1790s, while Schoenberg's audacious Pelleas and Melisande is a piece scored for massive orchestra which teeters on the edge of tonality.

Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major, Op. 15
Schoenberg: Pelleas und Melisande

Berlin Staatskapelle
Daniel Barenboim, piano and conductor

Barenboim has been Principal Conductor of the Berlin Staatskapelle since 1992 and was made their Principal Conductor for Life in 2000. The orchestra of the Berlin State Opera, the Berlin Staatskapelle traces its roots back to the 16th century.

Tonight's concert is followed by a focus on Barenboim performing chamber music in recordings made especially for the BBC. Carrying on with the artistic parallels suggested in this evening's concert, we feature Daniel Barenboim playing both Beethoven and Schoenberg.

WED 21:15 Night Waves (b00qjvdy)
Feminism

Anne McElvoy asks whether feminsism is central to civilised 21st century society.

Her guests in the studio are the writers, Natasha Walter, Joan Smith, Kat Banyard and Antonia Senior, the lawyer Maleiha Malik and the sociologist Catherine Hakim.

Natasha Walter's first book, the New Feminism, argued that women should focus on the political not the personal and that young women didn't want to be told what to think or who to sleep with. Now more than 10 years later she says she was wrong. In her new book, Living Dolls, she argues that women are being sold an airbrushed, highly sexualised and increasingly narrow vision of 'femininity'. Although opportunities for women in the real world may have expanded, the ambitions of many young girls are being limited by a culture that asks them to see their only proper occupations as consumerism and self-decoration.

But, if three of the key demands of women's liberation were the pill abortion rights and less constrained sexual behaviour has that liberal approach to sex left a bitter legacy today? Did feminism get it wrong about sex?

The Equality Bill is currently making its way through parliament spearheaded by Harriet Harman and yet there is still no real consensus amongst women about what equality really means or what the state should do about it. Anne McElvoy talks to Kat Banyard about her book The Equality Illusion, discusses what equality might look like in the 21st Century and asks what role, if any, the state should play.

And, is one of the biggest challenges facing european feminism in 2010 multi-culturalism? From feminist support for the Minaret ban in Switzerland, to controversies about the proposed banning of the burkha in France and unease about the increase in Muslim women veiling themselves in Britain, the clash between feminist ideas and the tolerance of very different ways of life has been played out on the streets and in the news. Can the quest for women's rights be combined with a tolerance of different religious and social mores practised by other cultures? Or does something have to give?

Beethoven/Barenboim

Beethoven: Piano Concertos Nos 2 and 4

Presented by Martin Handley.

In the second broadcast this week given by Daniel Barenboim and the Berlin Staatskapelle, two of Beethoven's Piano Concertos sandwich one of the works in which Schoenberg's music finally breaks free from the constraint's of tonality. In the 1790s, audiences were perplexed and shocked by Beethoven's strange use of key relations in the Second Concerto and how he began to explore music's potential for temporal expansion in the Fourth Concerto. In the early years of the 20th century for Schoenberg the situation was the exact reverse as he attempted to rein in the luxurious expansiveness of his early masterpieces with a new concision and compression, as exemplified by the 5 Orchestral Pieces.

Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 19
Schoenberg: Five Orchestral Pieces, Op. 16
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, Op. 58

Daniel Barenboim, piano and conductor

Following tonight's concert the renowned maestro performs Mozart: his Fantasia for piano K.475 in C minor and his Sonata for piano K. 457 in C minor, recorded by Radio 3 in 1989 at the same venue, the Royal Festival Hall in London.

THU 21:15 Night Waves (b00qc0fg)
Martin Amis

Philip Dodd talks to novelist, Martin Amis, in a full programme length interview about his latest novel, The Pregnant Widow, his pungent political opinions and a back catalogue that includes some of the most talked-about English novels of recent decades.

In the galaxy of British literary fiction Martin Amis is still a name to conjure with. His era defining 80s novels as London Fields and Money front a collected works that includes 12 novels, 2 autobiographies, serious journalism, essays and two volumes of short stories on subjects ranging from video games to paedophilia. After 9/11 Amis became more famous for his pungent opinions on Islamism and the supposed backwardness of Arab societies than his novels earning the ire of Terry Eagleton and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown among others.

He has returned to fiction with a new work, The Pregnant Widow. Set in a country house in Italy, the novel tackles the sexual fallout of the feminist revolution. A revolution that Amis supports but sees as a work in progress. No stranger to giving offence, Amis, by his own admission, has said it will get him in trouble with the feminists but others talk of a return to the comic form that made him famous.

Considered to possess a very English sensibility, Amis has spent a lot of time elsewhere, particularly New York and he spent the last two years living in Uruguay with his wife but he also has a position as Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Manchester.

In an extended conversation, Philip Dodd asks Martin Amis about the full gamut of his opinions from dentistry to Islamism.

It resulted in what the essayist always regarded as his greatest intellectual achievement - a challenge to received ideas about personal identity.

The concert was described by The Times as a "a triumph..(proving) beyond doubt that being Russian needn't stop you understanding and loving the symphony's very British and 1930s mix of folk nostalgia and personal sorrow - and the jitters and shellshock of the war."

The Moeran is balanced by Elgar's In the South (Alassio), and Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, performed by the young Chinese artist Tianwa Yang who makes her debut with the Orchestra.

Moeran lived here, on and off, through the 1930's and 40's.
The folk music and beauty of the locality inspired many of his works - his Symphony in G minor was completed on nearby Valentia Island.

In this Twenty Minutes Jeremy Dibble explores Moeran's Irish connections, and includes interviews with local acquaintances as well as an archive recording of the composer's own thoughts on his adopted country, recorded over sixty years ago.

Elgar, Mendelssohn, Moeran

Part 2

Live

Presented by Martin Handley

Chief Guest Conductor with the Manchester based Orchestra Vassily Sinaisky returns to the Bridgewater Hall with a reappraisal of Moeran's Symphony in G minor, which he first conducted last summer with the Orchestra at the Proms.

FRI 21:15 The Verb (b00qc2jp)
Haitian writing/Evie Wyld/Bill Griffiths/Lawrence Venuti

New Haitian writing

Following the recent earthquake, Haiti’s status as the poorest country in the Western hemisphere has been well-documented. But what’s remarked upon far less is the island's huge cultural wealth.

Here at The Verb, we wanted to explore and reflect that richness, and so as Haiti began the monumental task of burying its dead, housing its homeless and securing its future, we invited Haitian writers to send us new material.

We did so nervously, aware that some writers wouldn’t wish to deal directly with the earthquake. We asked for fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, that dealt – or didn’t deal – with recent events as the author saw fit. And we were pleased and humbled that so many writers responded.

We’ll be featuring their work regularly over coming weeks, beginning this week with an extract from the drama The Trap by artist, novelist, poet and playwright Franketienne, often called Haiti’s James Joyce. Rachel Douglas, Lecturer in French at Liverpool University, and Franketienne's translator, introduces the piece, which is performed in studio by Sean Baker and Phillip Browne.

Franketienne and Rewriting: A Work in Progress by Rachel Douglas is out now from Lexington Books.

For more information on Haitian writing please check the link below.

Bill Griffiths

Bill Griffiths was a biker with 'love' and 'hate' tattooed on his knuckles, but he was also a poet, an Anglo-Saxon scholar, and a folklorist (to name just a few of his passions). As a new edition of his early work is published, Ken Edwards and Sean Bonney discuss the legacy of a remarkable maverick.

Bill Griffiths, Collected Earlier Poems (1966 - 1980) is out now from Reality Street Editions.

Evie Wyld

Half-English , half-Australian novelist Evie Wyld works in a bookshop in London and last year won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize for her first novel After the Fire, a Still Small Voice. In this week's programme she presents a brand new piece of non-fiction, written specially for The Verb, about the house of her elderly aunt: Forgotten Place, Sydney.

Edward Hopper

Lawrence Venuti discusses his remarkable translation of Catalan poet Ernest Farres's cycle of poems about the great American painter.

Edward Hopper, by Ernest Farres, translated by Lawrence Venuti, is out now from Carcanet.

William Hazlitt - Philosopher

Acquaintance with Poets

Series of talks arguing that William Hazlitt was a committed philosopher as well as a great essayist.

Historian Jonathan Ree explores Hazlitt's relationship with Coleridge and Wordsworth. The former found Hazlitt to be 'a thinking, observant, original man', and it was this recognition that gave him the confidence to struggle quietly for many years to make his mark as a thinker as well as a writer.

FRI 23:15 World on 3 (b00qc2jt)
Lopa Kothari

Lopa Kothari with sounds from around the globe, plus a studio session with Istanbul-born singer Cigdem Aslan, and her take on the Rebetiko songs of the Greek diaspora who settled in and around Smyrna and Istanbul.

Touching a wide spectrum of themes including poverty, crime, violence, drugs, death and exile, Rebetiko music reflects the urban experience of Greeks forced to settle in Turkey following the 1922 population exchange. Shared musical heritages, melodies, lyrics and sentiments converged where local communities integrated with those exiled, and inspired musicians and composers such as Papazoglu, Hatzichrostos, and Skarvelis. Cigdem Aslan draws on this repertoire in her performances.

Istanbul-born Cigdem Aslan, who sings in her native Turkish, as well as Kurdish, Greek, Ladino and an array of Balkan languages, is now established in London studying music at Goldsmith's University and as a vocalist both with the She'Koyokh Klezmer ensemble and the SOAS Rebetiko band. She has performed in Balkan music ensemble Dunav and worked with individuals such as Dimitris Koufogiorgos and folk-rock singer songwriter Boo Scher.
