The BBC has announced that it has a sustainable plan for the future of the BBC Singers, in association with The VOCES8 Foundation.
The threat to reduce the staff of the three English orchestras by 20% has not been lifted, but it is being reconsidered.

SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show (b00p8bjv)
The Vivaldi Revival

Using landmark recordings, Lucie Skeaping charts the rediscovery of Vivaldi in the late 19th century. His music, now so familiar, had lain in virtual obscurity for more than 150 years.

In the late 19th century, Vivaldi had begun to creep back into the standard repertoire after an absence of more than 150 years. After his death in 1741, many dismissed Vivaldi as a second-rate composer; Charles Avison declared that Vivaldi lacked 'both harmony and invention', and the popularity of his music fell into a steady decline. Some 30 years later, on one of his grand musical tours, the musicologist Charles Burney was unable to collect any evidence, either direct or indirect, of Vivaldi's existence in Venice.

In the early 1800s, after it was discovered that Bach had based a number of his own great works on Vivaldi models, interest in the latter's music began to grow. Elgar admitted that he had learned the art of figured bass from a copy of Vivaldi's concertos; Fritz Kreisler published a concerto under Vivaldi's name and only admitted the false authorship after 22 years.

In the 1930s, Ezra Pound hailed Vivaldi as a champion of 'Italian musical autarchy', and he and his violinist mistress Olga Rudge sponsored a number of performances of his music in America and Europe.

The earliest recording of The Four Seasons was made in 1942 by Bernardo Molinari and the Orchestra dell'Accademia di S Cecila, and those four concertos have since become arguably some of the most recognisable pieces in the world.

Lucie charts this remarkable revival of a once forgotten master, using some of the landmark recordings in the Vivaldi catalogue, and explores some of the most interesting recent discoveries of Vivaldi scores.

Lawrence Lucie

Swing guitarist Lawrence Lucie died in 2009, aged 101. Not long before his death, Lucie met Alyn Shipton in New York to look back over his remarkable career, which not only included stints with Fletcher Henderson, Lucky Millinder and Benny Carter, but a long stay in Louis Armstrong's orchestra. Lucie was also the longest surviving member of Jelly Roll Morton's band, and he looks back on his work with the self-styled "inventor of jazz".

SAT 17:30 Opera on 3 (b00p8bk3)
Live from the Met

Puccini's Il Trittico

To begin a new season of broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, Stefano Ranzini conducts a production of Puccini's ever-popular triple bill, which all star soprano Patricia Racette.

Il Tabarro tells the story of a love affair which, when discovered, leads to murder. Suor Angelica is the tragic tale of a nun, banished to a convent after having had an illegitimate child. This is followed by the light relief of Gianni Schicchi in which the eponymous hero upsets the grasping Donato family by impersonating their recently deceased relative, ostensibly to ensure that the family gets his properties while in fact taking the best of them for himself.

Presented by Margaret Juntwait with guest commentator Ira Siff. During the two intervals there are backstage interviews and the Met Quiz.

Giorgetta ...... Patricia Racette (soprano)
Frugola ...... Stephanie Blythe (mezzo-soprano)

SAT 22:00 Between the Ears (b00p8bk5)
The Great Bell

When the historian Arnold Toynbee heard the Great Bell of Toudaiji he exclaimed, "That is Japan". Sony-award-winner Stephen Gill captures the physical and symbolic power of tons of suspended bronze and follows the ancient process of manufacturing of a bonshou, the huge bell that every Buddhist temple has.

A bonshu is not hidden in a belfry, but housed in an open wooden tower. They don't have clappers, but are struck by huge tree trunks, suspended from ropes, swung against them from outside. Each Old Year is rung out with 108 booms from every bonshou throughout the land. Each has its own voice and character. Every Japanese person has the right to one strike, which consumes the sins of the old year and purifies them for the new. These great bells are essential to Japanese identity, which, through them, Stephen Gill explores.

We hear the New Year bells, recorded in the city and the countryside. There is the Gion bonshou, which at 30 tons is more than twice the weight of Big Ben. The heaviest in the land is the Rengein bonshou which weighs 37.5 tons. It takes 20 monks to swing the beam to sound it. Ikkou Iwasawa, who runs the foundry where it was made, explains the mystery of creating such huge bells - as one is being cast. The Rev Eishou Kawahara, the head priest of Rengein, whose bonshou can be heard 40 kilometres away, reveals their spiritual meaning, and the impact they have on people.

Stephen Gill has lived in Japan for many years and speaks the language fluently. He weaves haiku poems about them and weaves these into stories and recordings of famous bells.

Producer: Julian May.

SUN 13:00 The Early Music Show (b00p8c7r)
Claudio Scimone

Catherine Bott travels to Padua to meet Italian conductor and pioneering champion of the baroque Claudio Scimone, of I Solisti Veneti. Founded in 1959, they were one of the first groups to give performances of the 18th-century music from the Veneto region of Italy. They made some of the first recordings of many concertos and opera by Vivaldi as well as music by Tartini and Albinoni.

As Scimone marks his 75th birthday, Catherine pays tribute to the conductor and his group, which is still actively engaged in Baroque research and still touring all over the world. For many people, Scimone offered their first experience of this repertory, and with a catalogue of more than 350 recordings and numerous awards to his credit, he and I Solisti Veneti still provide the only recording option in the catalogue for many important baroque works.

Scimone talks about how and why he established I Solisti Veneti back in 1959; about his ideas on interpretation; and about the fruits of some of his research, such as the re-discovery of important Italian scores by Albinoni and Tartini.

SUN 17:00 Discovering Music (b00p8dcb)
The Benny Goodman Legacy

As part of the 2009 London Jazz Festival, Alyn Shipton presents a special programme from the BBC Radio Theatre exploring two remarkable but very different 'classical' clarinet concertos which were composed for the great jazz clarinettist Benny Goodman: works by Malcolm Arnold and Aaron Copland. Alyn chooses tracks from Goodman's extensive jazz discography to illustrate some of the focal points in the concertos, while the two pieces are bought to life with the help of soloist Julian Bliss and the Trinity College of Music Chamber Orchestra conducted by Andrew Gourlay.

Born in 1909, Goodman was an astonishing child prodigy and young master of jazz and, by the end of the 1930s, he was arguably the most famous clarinettist in the world. But as his fame grew, he became increasingly anxious about what he saw as the limitations of his skills. He completely re-learned his technique and, in the late 1940s when Aaron Copland was writing a concerto for him, Goodman adopted a new embouchure and even had some surgery on his hands to get rid of the calluses that he had created by his unorthodox fingering.

Copland's concerto, economically scored for harp, piano and strings, contains music inspired by many different styles - jazz, American country dance, the blues and even a touch of the Latin influence, which was thought to be a result of the composer's living in Rio de Janeiro. It is clear to many that Copland kept Benny Goodman absolutely in mind when he was writing the piece, as the work is a showcase for the soloist to demonstrate not only his dexterity and articulation, but also his warm, luxurious tone.

SUN 22:00 Sunday Feature (b00p8dcj)
Closer to Blood than Ink

Pablo Neruda is a literary Che Guevara, an idolised figure, much loved, but not much scrutinised. This feature reassesses him, taking a close look at his work and his life; in particular his role in getting refugees out of fascist Spain, and what this unknown but highly significant story reveals about him.

In 1938 Neruda was a diplomat, representing Chile in Paris. He chartered a ship, the SS Winnipeg, to convey 2,000 Spanish Republicans to Chile. He was there on the quay, in a white hat, waving them off. And he wrote the poem Let Me Explain a Few Things in which he disowned his previous romantic and lyrical self and committed himself to exposing the world's injustices.

But it has been alleged that Neruda was a kind of reverse Schindler, with a list of people who were not going to get on the Winnipeg. As a diplomat he had access to passports, and he made sure these went only to those of his particular left-wing beliefs (which were Stalinist). According to Neruda's critics, the Anarchists and more moderate socialists were rejected and were therefore interned in France. Many were executed soon after when the Nazis moved in.

Neruda remained devoted to Stalin and wrote a threnody on his death: 'We must learn from Stalin/ his sincere intensity/ his concrete clarity.'

Nick Rankin investigates this episode in Neruda's life, talking to his latest biographer, Adam Feinstein, to the writer Stephen Schwarz, who makes the allegation, to the anarchist publisher Stuart Christie, the poet Jane Duran, whose father was close to, then rejected by Neruda, and to Victor Pey in Santiago, who was one of those who sailed on the Winnipeg. He considers the impact it had on his poetry, and reassesses that achievement. What emerges is more complex and nuanced than at first appears.

Producer: Julian May.

SCO/Robin Ticciati

Presented by Petroc Trelawny.

A concert given at City Halls, Glasgow, featuring the highly anticipated debut of young British conductor Robin Ticciati as principal conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

It begins with Henze's First Symphony, which although composed by a youthful 21-year-old who had just lived through the horrors of Hitler's Germany, is surprisingly pastoral and light-hearted. The programme then pairs the expansive richness of Brahms's Second Symphony with the dark depth of Mahler's folk-inspired song cycle, performed by one of the most celebrated Czech stars of today, mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozena.

MON 21:15 Night Waves (b00p8fdx)
Sacred Monsters

Bertholt Brecht

Special Night Waves series considering some of important cultural figures who have seen their reputations wither in the last decades. In the face of the collapse of communism, lurid biographical revelation, the authority of feminism and time itself, these grand male voices have seen their intellectual influence diminish - or even collapse.

Philip Dodd and guests offer a re-appraisal of the work and influence of the great German dramatist Bertolt Brecht. Once considered to be the essence of radical drama, his plays and productions were considered models of modernity, intellectual insight and social commentary. Yet the word Brechtian can now seem to represent to many people a production that is leaden, a message which is laboured and a design that is drab and unimaginitive. Are his political fables now fatally outdated and his dramatic techniques no longer effective? Or is it time to take the man who once bestrode the theatrical landscape of Europe and place him back at the centre of the stage?

Once there, he composed a wide range of fine works, struck out on a concert tour of Europe and founded a great friendship with a chap by the name of Beethoven.

Sacred Monsters

Steven Moffat/DH Lawrence's Reputation/James Cameron

Matthew Sweet is joined in the studio by the new executive producer and lead writer of Doctor Who, Steven Moffat, in his first interview since taking on the role. He discusses the challenges he faces in taking on one of the BBC's most successful series.

In the second in the Sacred Monsters series, analysing important cultural figures, writers Hermione Lee and Howard Jacobson re-examine the reputation of DH Lawrence. Is he still someone who can be considered a visionary writer or is his worldview, seen by some as phallocentric, now redundant in the 21st century?

Film director James Cameron talks about his new 3D blockbuster Avatar. It is reported as being the most expensive film ever made and Cameron has hopes that it will change the future of cinema. Will it follow The Jazz Singer, the first 'talkie', and Toll of the Sea, the first technicolour movie as films that are either rarely watched or forgotten entirely? Neil Brand and Matt Thorne join Matthew to talk about the fate of films which pioneered new technology.

Neil and Matthew have also been looking at a series of short silent films to be broadcast over Christmas on Sky Television made by directors and writers including Richard Eyre, Neil Gaiman, Roy Williams and Lucy Gannon. But is it possible to return successfully to old forms of cinema?

WED 21:15 Night Waves (b00p8g3f)
Sacred Monsters

Bertrand Russell/Liz Forgan/Vaclav Havel/Nine

Special Night Waves series considering some of important cultural figures who have seen their reputations wither in the last decades.

Anne McElvoy and guests, incuding philosopher AC Grayling re-assess the reputation of philosopher and public intellectual Bertrand Russell who, at the time of his death in 1970, had a seemingly secure reputation as one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century. First, he transformed philosophical thinking through the application of rigorous mathematical logic and then moved on to become one of the most important commentators on a range of subjects, from nationalism to communism, imperialism to nuclear arms. Yet today Russell's standing has fallen dramatically. Questions have been raised about his sexual morals, his family life and his political views, and many now see him as a man who should never have stepped out of the rarified world of academia.

Liz Forgan joins Anne to talk about taking up her post as chair of the Arts Council.

The Velvet Revolution of 1989 saw off Communism in the former Czechoslovakia and put the playwright Vaclav Havel as President. Twenty years on, Anne speaks to historian Mischa Glennie and to Havel's close adviser in 1989 Jiri Pehe about what happened when an artist and intellectual had to negotiate the day-to-day workings of the political machine

And critic Matt Wolf reviews the film Nine, the new musical adaptation for the screen from the director of Cabaret, starring Robert Downey Jr and Penelope Cruz.

THU 12:00 Composer of the Week (b007g60w)
Louis Spohr (1784-1859)

Episode 4

Donald Macleod explores the life and work of Louis Spohr, considering how he laid the musical foundations for other more famous composers.

If history has not been as generous to Spohr as perhaps it might, one reason could be the high wall of Romanticism that seems to stand between us and the composer. The gracious elegance of Spohr's classicism seems altogether less grand than the gestures that were to follow from the pens of Berlioz, Bruckner, Mahler, Strauss and others, who he influenced.

The Misanthrope/Jean-Paul Sartre/Marcus Du Sautoy/Winter Rituals

Rana Mitter reviews one of the starriest of 2009's openings in the West End, as Keira Knightley, Damien Lewis and Tara Fitzgerald star in Martin Crimp's updated adaptation of Moliere's The Misanthrope.

To conclude a special series considering some of important cultural figures who have seen their reputations wither in the last decades, Rana is joined by Jonathan Ree and Andrew Hussey to re-assess the work of existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre. He used his fame to become a prominent political and social campaigner, and was revered not just for his intellect but for his liberal principles. Yet since his death Sartre has come to be regarded by some as a figure of fun, a cliche of obscure and irrelevant complication whose thought has little relevance in general life. Existentialism is often dismissed and Sartre himself is criticised for being anti-feminist

Rana also talks to professor of the public understanding of science Marcus Du Sautoy, about the challenges of his role as an ambassador for the subject, particularly in the light of recent controversies in climate change research and Government targets for university research.

And finally, looking forward to Christmas and the New Year, Rana examines the role that these annual rituals of renewal play in our lives. As we reach the end of a year and a decade, anthropologist Juliette Wood and the Rev Richard Coles explore the ancient roots and contemporary relevance of the annual winter jamboree.

FRI 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00p8hp7)
BBC SO - Robert Crumb

Presented by Petroc Trelawny.

In a concert given at the Barbican Hall, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and friends explore the music of one of the most original and unpredictable composers of our time - the American maverick George Crumb. Born in 1929 in Charleston, West Virginia, Crumb is hard to categorise, and is seen as a sonic inventor and a musical pioneer. There's a haunting sense of the mystical and spiritual about his work but it is also delicate and theatrical, rich in references to non-western music and composers such as Bach and Chopin.

The BBC SO perform his 1968 Pulitzer Prize-winning piece Echoes of Time and the River, which explores the nature of the passing of time, with the performers processing around the stage in four lines each at different speeds.

Pianist Joanna MacGregor joins the celebration playing his Little Suite for Christmas, AD 1979, described as a 'holy tone-poem' for piano, inspired by Giotto's frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel.

The orchestra is then joined by soloists, soprano Claudia Barainsky, the Trinity Boys Choir and the New London Chamber Choir for a performance of Crumb's largest work in terms of performing forces, Star-Child, which traces a blazing, inspired vision from apocalyptic darkness to redeeming light.

Charlie Gillett

Charlie Gillett with sounds from around the world, and a studio session by one of New Zealand's finest, the Wellington-based seven-piece band Fat Freddy's Drop.

The band call themselves a 'seven-headed soul monster', but their musical range also stretches to roots, dub, reggae and jazz. A fiercely independent group, they forned their own label The Drop in 1999 to release their first tracks. They made their reputation as a live band playing long improvisations, then in 2006 they released their first full studio album, Based on a True Story, which became an international hit. They now regularly tour summer festivals across the world and their second album, Dr Boondigga and the Big BW - a reference to major record labels - was released in 2009.
