The BBC has announced that it has a sustainable plan for the future of the BBC Singers, in association with The VOCES8 Foundation.
The threat to reduce the staff of the three English orchestras by 20% has not been lifted, but it is being reconsidered.

SAT 12:15 Music Feature (b00knsy8)
Ode to Whitman

Rob Cowan explores the attraction to composers of the poetry of Walt Whitman.

Whitman's poetry has inspired an extraordinary number of musical works - there are some 1200 vocal and instrumental settings of his verse by, among others, Vaughan Williams, Delius, Bernstein, Ives, Weill, Hindemith, Holst and John Adams - and the 'Bard of Democracy's optimistic, inclusive, radically free voice continues to appeal to contemporary composers today.

Some of the earliest settings were by English composers, who saw in Whitman a liberation from Victorian jingoism. He represented instead optimism and renewal, a celebration of free speech and free love. Its timeless qualities meant that Whitman's poetry also became a potent force during the Second World War for Kurt Weill and Paul Hindemith, in flight from the Nazis, and looking to forge a new American identity.

Weaving together readings of his poetry with some of the music setting his words, and with contributions from David Reynolds, author of 'Walt Whitman's America,' on the influence of music on Whitman's verse, M. Wynn Thomas on the radical qualities of his poetry, and Jack Sullivan on the musical responses to Whitman, this feature takes in some of the wealth of music Whitman has inspired, and discovers the inherently musical aspects of his writing. Music was such a powerful force on Whitman that he saw himself less as a poet than as a singer or bard, and his verse repeatedly alludes to it: "I sing the body electric", "Song of myself", "I hear America singing" are among his titles. Seeing his poetry as a kind of singing, he highlighted American themes but also integrated operatic techniques - the most profound influence on him being, as he put it, "the great, overwhelming, touching human voice..."

SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show (b00knsyb)
German Organ Mass

Organist Simon Lole explores Bach's so-called German Organ Mass, an acknowledged masterwork of the repertoire, and part of the composer's collection of four great keyboard works, Clavierubung.

Simon presents a selection of high-profile recordings and illustrates some of the ideas in the music from the organ of Jesus College, Cambridge. The wealth of musical styles and musical invention in the collection is notable in itself, but Bach had another motivation for creating this Clavierubung. By unpicking some of its musical codes and symbols, Simon explains its raison d'etre and the meaning of the work's moniker.

SAT 16:00 Jazz Library (b00knsyg)
Dave Liebman

Dave Liebman came to fame as the saxophonist in Miles Davis's 1970s band, but he has had a formidable career since the 1980s as a bandleader in his own right, often specialising on the soprano instrument, but also returning to the his first love, the tenor. He joins Alyn Shipton in front of an audience at Cheltenham Town Hall to select the highlights of his recordings.

In this Jazz Library, Dave Liebman, who was the Cheltenham Jazz Festival's artist in residence in 2009, joins Alyn Shipton to look back over his extensive catalogue of recordings, including free solo improvisations, reinterpretations of classical music, tributes to John Coltrane and interpretations of standards. A virtuoso musician who is also a leader in the world of jazz education, Liebman shows his mastery in a variety of settings from playing completely unaccompanied to working with a full-scale big band.

SAT 18:00 Opera on 3 (b00knsyl)
Opera on 3 from the Royal Opera House

Wagner's Der fliegende Hollander

Radio 3's series of operas from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, continues with Marc Albrecht conducting Tim Albery's new production of Wagner's Der fliegende Hollander, with bass-baritone Bryn Terfel in the title role and soprano Anja Kampe as Senta.

Wagner based his great Romantic opera on Heinrich Heine's story about a Dutch sea captain compelled, as punishment for a blasphemous oath, to sail the oceans for ever unless he's redeemed by the love of a faithful woman. For a while it seems that Senta might be that redeeming angel, but after a misunderstanding the Dutchman is disillusioned once more, and returns to the sea, consigning himself to his fate.

Presented by Martin Handley.

Julian Arguelles and John Abercrombie at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival 2009

Radio 3 at the Summer Festivals

Jez Nelson presents UK saxophonist Julian Arguelles with US guitarist John Abercrombie in concert at the 2009 Cheltenham Jazz Festival. The group perform new tunes written by Arguelles that demonstrate Abercrombie's versatile technique and reputation as one of the world's leading guitarists.

Abercrombie has been at the forefront of jazz guitar music for the past 30 years, from his Gateway group in the 70s, featuring Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette, to his recent quartet with violinist Mark Feldman. Birmingham-born Arguelles rose to fame in the 1980s as member of UK big band Loose Tubes. Since then he has released a number of albums as leader of groups ranging from duo to big band and received several BBC Jazz Awards.
