The BBC has announced that it has a sustainable plan for the future of the BBC Singers, in association with The VOCES8 Foundation.
The threat to reduce the staff of the three English orchestras by 20% has not been lifted, but it is being reconsidered.

SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show (b00dw24m)
Jean-Marie Leclair

Jean Marie Leclair's story is one of the most mysterious of the French baroque. He began life as a lacemaker before finding a career as a dancer, and eventually as a virtuoso violinist and composer, he became so celebrated that he was known as, "The French Corelli". He quickly came to the attention of the King and his compositions became justifiably popular. Then, in 1758 his story takes a sudden twist. Leclair's marriage broke up and he chose to live in a hovel, in a dangerous area of Paris just east of the city walls. Why, nobody knows. He didn't need to live in such circumstances. One morning, his gardener, suspicious that Leclair's garden gate had been left open, ventured within and discovered the famous Leclair lying murdered in a pool of blood in the vestibule of his house. He had been stabbed three times. The Parisian police under the auspices of the celeberated French Lieutenant General of Police, Antoine de Sartine, held a thorough investigation. So what did happen to Leclair? Had his jealous nephew, Francois, killed him in a fit of pique. Could it have been his impoverished wife, Louise? Did the gardener, Paysant, do it or might it have been a psychopathic stranger? Lucie Skeaping outlines the grisly story with actors taking the parts of the various supsects in the case. The whole programme is illustrated with a selection from some of Leclair's marvellous music.

SAT 18:00 Opera on 3 (b00dw24w)
Love and Other Demons

(see below for summary and cast list)

Synopsis: ACT I

The action takes place in a colonial sea port in Colombia in
the 18th century.

The Bishop stands with his librarian, Cayetano Delaura, overlooking the town that is under his care. A solar eclipse is about to occur and the Bishop advises Delaura against looking directly at the sun. Simultaneously, Sierva María de Todos Los Angeles, the daughter of the Marquis Don Ygnacio, is visiting the market used by the African slaves. As the eclipse takes place, Sierva slips away from the slave who is looking after her and is bitten by a dog.

Back home at the Marquis’s villa, the slaves, led by Dominga, who has raised Sierva since she was a baby, celebrate the girl’s birthday in African fashion. In the middle of the ceremony, Sierva collapses and Dominga discovers the dog bite. The Marquis Don Ygnacio, Sierva’s father, appears and asks what is being celebrated. Dominga reminds him that it is his daughter’s birthday. Ygnacio tries to pull off the African necklaces that have been placed on his daughter, but she resists, terrified.

Meanwhile the Bishop has summoned the Abbess Josefa of the Convent of St Clare. He has heard that the dog that bit Sierva was rabid, that she is now infected and behaving as if she were possessed. Reluctantly the Abbess agrees to take Sierva into the care of the Convent until she is better. The Bishop instructs Delaura to take charge of the girl’s salvation.

The Marquis Don Ygnacio has summoned the doctor, Abrenuncio, to his house. While Abrenuncio examines Sierva, Ygnacio upbraids Dominga for not telling him about the dog bite sooner. Dominga responds that she thinks that Sierva’s distress is not rabies, but stems from the absence of a mother in her life. Alone, Ygnacio remembers his dead wife, Sierva’s mother Olalla. Abrenuncio appears. His diagnosis is laconic, Sierva may or may not have rabies, but if she does, there is nothing that can be done, except to wait and do everything possible to make her happy. A letter arrives from Abbess Josefa detailing the Bishop’s instructions that Sierva should be cared for in the Convent. Despite Sierva’s protests and Dominga and Abrenuncio’s foreboding, Ygnacio hopelessly acquiesces to the Bishop’s demand.

At the Convent of St Clare, Sierva is left alone to wait for the Abbess. While she waits, she talks with the birds and sings a Yoruba song. Josefa and the nuns appear and begin to strip Sierva of her finery. When they try to remove her necklaces, she resists so violently that Josefa and the nuns become convinced that she is possessed. She is locked in a cell.
In the cell she is cared for by Martina Laborde, a former nun who is
now imprisoned in the convent for her crime. Martina tells Sierva she should ask her demons to fly her out of the convent, because no one else will rescue her. Sierva believes she will be going home soon.
Delaura appears. From the first, Sierva wrong-foots him and he finds himself more and more engaged by her. Rebuffed by Sierva, Delaura discovers that his concern for her has grown into a passionate obsession: he is possessed.

ACT II
The doctor, alone, reflects on the nature of possession. Delaura comes to the Bishop, worried by the feelings that Sierva is arousing in him. He tells of a dream that he has had, imagining Sierva alone in a winter landscape. Delaura doubts that Sierva is possessed, but the Bishop overrules him. Sierva, half-awake, dreams the same dream as Delaura. She is awakened by Martina, who wants to know more about Sierva’s demons: she wants their help escaping from the convent. They are disturbed by Delaura, who sends Martina away. Alone together, Delaura declares his love for Sierva. They recite the sonnets by Garcilaso de la Vega that he has been teaching her and grow closer and closer. Abbess Josefa appears and throws Delaura out. Martina begins to cut Sierva’s hair in preparation for her exorcism. Delaura reappears, but the nuns surround Sierva and drive him away.

The exorcism begins. Delaura attempts once more to rescue Sierva,
but is driven back again. Josefa comforts Sierva as the Bishop continues the exorcism. Sierva attacks him and is dragged back to her cell. There she hears the cry of a peacock, the sign of Oshun, the Yoruba goddess of love to whom Dominga dedicated her. She begs Oshun to take her soul. The dream she shared with Delaura becomes a reality.

SAT 21:40 BBC Singers (b00dw250)
Maurice Durufle's hauntingly beautiful Requiem performed at St Alban's Abbey by Judith Harris (mezzo), Stephen Charlesworth (baritone), BBC Singers and BBC Concert Orchestra directed by Nicholas Cleobury. The performance, recorded at the 2001 St Alban's international Organ Festival, uses the seldom-heard version for chorus, soloists and large orchestra of the work, which was composed in 1947 and became a much-loved choral classic of the 20th century. As a model, Durufle took Faure's Requiem and his piece closely shadows the outline of Faure's piece, born of the enormous admiration and respect Durufle felt towards his elder colleague.

SUN 00:00 Jazz Library (b007xyxt)
Benny Goodman

The King of Swing, and one of the finest of all jazz clarinetists, Benny Goodman recorded prolifically, and was as dazzlingly talented in a big band setting as in a small group. He encouraged multi-racial bands, with his trio, quartet and sextet, and helped bring guitarist Charlie Christian to a wider audience.

Alyn Shipton is joined by John Dankworth, who shares some of his keen insights into Goodman's style, his selection of key recordings and his personal reminiscences of Benny, with whom he played for the first time in 1949.

Nick Clegg

Michael Berkeley's guest today is Nick Clegg, Leader of the Liberal Democrats and MP for Sheffield Hallam. He was born in 1967, the third of four children of a half-Russian father and a Dutch mother. He speaks fluent Dutch, French, German and Spanish, and has a Spanish wife.

After beginning his career as a journalist and development aid and trade expert for the European Commission, he was elected as an MEP in 1999, writing many essays on public policy issues. He was elected MP for Sheffield Hallam in 2005, and succeeded Menzies Campbell as party leader in December 2007. Since this programme was first broadcast in October 2008, he has become Deputy Prime Minister in the newly-elected coalition government.

He admits that being an MP and particularly party leader, is such a full-time job (especially also having small children), that it doesn't leave very much time for leisure activities, but he loves listening to music when he can. His wife plays the piano, and three of his choices are of music played by pianists he greatly admires: a Schubert Impromptu in E flat minor played by Alfred Brendel, a Chopin waltz played by Claudio Arrau, and the slow movement of Chopin's Second Piano Concerto, played by Vladimir Ashkenazy. His other choices are Mozart's Laudate Dominum, K339, Schubert's terrifying song Erlkonig, sung by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau with Gerald Moore; and Richard Strauss's radiant Beim Schlafengehen, one of the Four Last Songs, sung by Elizabeth Schwarzkopf. Meanwhile, to the accompaniment of The City Waites, Lucie tries out some of the dances herself, under Barbara Segal's expert guidance, of course!

The Duchess of Malfi

By John Webster.

The Duchess of Malfi is one of the great Jacobean plays, and this new production focuses on the personal tragedies of a powerful family rent by lust and betrayal. When the widowed Duchess marries her steward Antonio, the choice challenges the accepted social order and established lines of power. It also brings her into direct conflict with her powerful brothers, the Duke Ferdinand and the scheming Cardinal, and tragedy ensues. The dark tale is enhanced by dark music written especially for the play.

SUN 22:15 Sunday Feature (b00dw3p5)
Elegy

Poet Michael Symmons Roberts embarks on a personal exploration of the role of the elegy. He talks to poets Douglas Dunn, Michael Longley and Gillian Clarke about their own elegies and discusses with Andrew Motion the challenges of writing elegies at times of public mourning. Michael writes a series of elegies to the elegists of the past and asks whether, in the way it captures lost moments, objects and people, all poetry is elegy.

SUN 23:00 Words and Music (b00dw3p7)
The Ringing Grooves of Change

The starting point for this week’s Words and Music is a quotation from Tennyson’s ‘Locksley Hall’, the poem read by Judi Dench in BBC TV’s adaptation of Cranford recently. By ‘the ringing grooves of change’ Tennyson was referring to the pressure imposed on people by change, in his experience the changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution.

Revolutions – and periods of change - during history have always inspired poets and composers. Sometimes they’ve written in direct response to events and sometimes more obliquely. During the French Revolution poets like Blake, Wordsworth and Shelley responded very quickly to what was happening as did composers like Lefevre and Gossec: in the programme you’ll hear Lefevre’s ‘Hymne a l’Agriculture’ and Gossec’s ‘March Symphonie Militaire’ as well as extracts from Wordsworth’s ‘The Prelude’.

The Spanish Civil War too inspired writers like George Orwell and Stephen Spender and composers like Samuel Barber who wrote a choral setting of Spender’s ‘A Stopwatch and an Ordnance Map’ in response to the conflict in Spain. In Russia Shostakovich lived through the October Revolution, the Civil War and two World Wars as well as the horrors of Stalinism. And, although he remained loyal to the ideals of the October Revolution he, along with other poets and composers, detested Stalin. This is all expressed in his music including the piece in the programme, ‘In the Deserted Village’ from ‘The Fall of Berlin’. Although the piece expresses the horror of war it was written for a film which was presented to Stalin as a present on his seventieth birthday, an indication of the difficulties faced by artists during this period of Russian history. Poets like Alexander Blok had a complex response to what was happening in Russia, moving from idealism to disgust at the aftermath of revolution in poems like ‘On the Field of Kulicovo’. The programme though ends on a note of optimism and hope with Arthur Hugh Clough’s ‘Say Not the Struggle Naught Availeth’ and Beethoven’s ‘Egmont Overture’.

The Sonny Simmons Quartet at the Vortex Jazz Club

Jez Nelson presents a gig by the Sonny Simmons Quartet given earlier this month at the Vortex Jazz Club in London. Featuring Derek Saw (trumpet/trombone), John Jasnoch (guitar/oud) and Charlie Collins (drums/cajon).

Simmons moved to New York via Los Angeles to join the emerging free jazz movement of the 1960s and his ESP albums Staying on the Watch and Music from the Spheres are considered classics. After personal problems in the 1970s, he dropped out of music and was rediscovered after spending 15 years playing on the streets of San Francisco.

Simmons does not limit himself to avant-garde strains of jazz, and his role in the development of the tradition is vital, having worked with jazz giants such as Eric Dolphy and Sonny Rollins.

TUE 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00dw8hk)
Tom Service presents a concert given at Belfast's Waterfront Hall.

The Ulster Orchestra and its chief conductor Kenneth Montgomery perform a concert of two masterworks by Edward Elgar, alongside a seminal film score by Arthur Bliss and one of Brahms's most popular works.

Elgar's Cello Concerto was composed in 1919 in the wake of World War I and it represented for the composer the angst and disillusionment he felt about the war. It has become one of the most popular pieces in the cello repertoire. War is also central to the film Things to Come, for which Arthur Bliss wrote the score to HG Wells's screenplay. Wells originally wanted the music to be recorded in advance and have the film constructed around the music, but this was considered too radical, so the score was fitted to the film afterwards in a more conventional way.

Elgar's famous sketches of his friends and Brahms's lively overture complete the programme.

Brahms: Academic Festival Overture
Elgar: Cello Concerto
Bliss: Suite (Things to Come)
Elgar: Enigma Variations

Natalie Clein (cello)
Ulster Orchestra
Kenneth Montgomery (conductor)

Followed by Play to the Nation, Radio 3's celebration of amateur orchestras across the UK:

Maurice Blower: Symphony in C
Havant Symphony Orchestra
Peter Craddock (conductor)

...and Pianothon, showcasing amateur pianists across the country:

Kabalevsky: Rondo Op.59
Jessica Leong

Somervell: Birds and Bees
David Paterson

TUE 21:15 Night Waves (b00dw8hm)
Rana Mitter talks to historian Richard Evans, who has just been appointed Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University. Evans discusses how the practice of history has changed in his three-decade career and how the focus of his work has been to ensure that one of the 20th century's greatest tragedies is fully understood by the generations who are born after it. He also talks about the final volume in his trilogy on Hitler's Germany, The Third Reich at War.

Puw, Schubert

15/10/2008

Tom Service presents the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Jac van Steen from Swansea's Brangwyn Hall in the first part of a concert inspired by two great mythical tales, one Greek and one Welsh.

Gutu Puw's work, which begins the programme, takes its inspiration from the closing section of the Branwen tale in the Welsh folk legend the Mabinogion. A group of warriors has been allowed to feast for 80 years without any memories of their past ordeals - just so long as they do not open the forbidden door.

Tom Service presents the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Jac van Steen from Swansea's Brangwyn Hall in the second part of a concert inspired by two great mythical tales, one Greek and one Welsh.

Stravinsky's edgy neo-classical score is the perfect vehicle for the ritualistic drama of Oedipus Rex, driving the action forward as Sophocles's hero searches for the cause of the curse on Thebes, with the inevitable realisation that he is the contagion and has fulfilled the fate that he would kill his father and marry his mother.

Stravinsky: Oedipus Rex
Oedipus ...... James Gilchrist (tenor)
Jocasta ...... Susan Bickley (mezzo-soprano)
Shepherd ...... Timothy Robinson (tenor)
Messenger ...... Neal Davies (baritone)
Creon ...... Darren Jeffery (bass)
Tiresias ...... Stephen Richardson (bass)
Narrator ...... Philip Madoc
