1814, Vienna. As Europe's leaders gather for the Congress of Vienna, the city is gripped by a new dance craze. In the ballrooms of the Austrian capital, couples whirl across the floor in close embrace, alarming moralists and delighting dancers. The waltz has arrived.
Originating in the folk traditions of Central Europe, the waltz quickly becomes one of the defining social and musical phenomena of the nineteenth century. As public dance halls proliferate across Vienna, composers, performers and entrepreneurs seize new opportunities, helping to create a thriving market for music designed as much for entertainment as for artistic ambition.
From Schubert's piano waltzes to Weber's Invitation to the Dance and the great Strauss dynasty, the waltz soon escapes the ballroom altogether. Over the decades that follow, composers continue to reinvent its distinctive rhythms, transforming a popular dance into one of classical music's most enduring and versatile forms.
Gillian Moore is joined by a roster of distinguished historians for this major new BBC Radio 3 series, charting a course through 1000 years of classical music history. Today, her co-presenter is Simon Schama.

Lopa Kothari presents the best in new global folk and roots-based music. Malian guitar virtuoso Habib Koité and Gambian kora maestro Sura Susso come together for a collaborative album celebrating the enduring legacy of the griot tradition. Powerhouse conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and the Oslo Philharmonic team up with maverick virtuoso Patricia Kopatchinskaja for Stravinsky’s Bach-inspired Violin Concerto – a ferociously demanding work that showcases all the violinist’s signature ‘beauty, passion and imagination’. Shakespeare’s warring families and passionate young lovers come to life in excerpts from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, and the concert opens with Norwegian composer Øyvind Torvund’s symphonic poem ‘Forest Morning’ for orchestra and electronics, in which idyllic birdsong is gradually taken over by the sounds of traffic and urban bustle.

Georgia Mann introduces specially recorded performances from some of Radio 3's current New Generation Artists. Today, the lyrical violin of American violinist Hana Chang is heard in Edvard Grieg's tender Violin Sonata no. 2. Written during his honeymoon, this sonata is imbued with the rhythmic contours of the Norwegian springar (leaping dance), and it beautifully reflects the newlyweds' happiness and the Grieg's deepening connection to his native musical roots.

Lea Ypi
Lea Ypi, a professor of political theory at the London School of Economics, grew up in Albania under communism, when it was the last Stalinist outpost in Europe.
She was 10 years old when the Berlin Wall fell, and a year later she saw the collapse of communism in Albania. Statues of Stalin and Enver Hoxha, the country’s leader for 40 years, were toppled. Democratic elections followed - but so did civil unrest.
Lea wrote about these turbulent years in her book Free, which won prizes and widespread acclaim: 'essential - just as much for Britons as Albanians' according to one critic.
She has delved further into her family history, looking into the past of her grandmother, in her book Indignity.
Lea's musical choices include Beethoven, Wagner, Dizdari and Bach.

Mendelssohn - Italian Symphony
Sara Mohr-Pietsch takes us on a listening journey, ending up at Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony no. 4, the Italian. He wrote it in his early twenties when he was on a Grand Tour, taking in the rich range of Italian culture - and we'll hear other music inspired by Italian tours, from the eighteenth-century English prodigy Thomas Linley to the German late Romantic Richard Strauss. The Italian folk music that inspired Mendelssohn also features, as does the music of his sister Fanny, who had to stay at home while Felix was on his travels. The Italian Symphony was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society, and there'll be more music that they have helped to bring to life down the ages.

Berlioz’s ‘Dramatic Legend’ The Damnation of Faust is an operatic thrill-ride, a tour de force for orchestra, chorus and soloists that throws all of music’s capacity at one simple question: what is the price of the human soul? A story of heaven and hell, of demons and angels is best staged in sound and imagination – too cinematic for the confines of the stage. Jakob Lehmann and the period musicians of Les Siècles bring it to life in a concert performance with an international cast of soloists, including American tenor John Osborn in the title role, Gerald Finley and Véronique Gens.

Haydn’s Symphony No. 44, written at the height of his fame in Europe, embodies the bracing rhythms, lyrical melodies and dramatic silences typical of the ‘Storm and Stress’ movement, its nickname – ‘Trauer’ or ‘Mourning’ – arising from the suggestion he requested its serene slow movement be played at his funeral. Max Bruch evoked the heyday of Romanticism in his lush, ever-popular First Violin Concerto: young Swedish violinist Daniel Lozakovich returns following his acclaimed Proms debut in 2022. Sketched out in less than a week during a period of white-hot inspiration in 1841, Schumann’s Fourth Symphony is the outgoing, extrovert complement to his calmer, recently completed ‘Spring’ Symphony. Omer Meir Wellber, a former Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, conducts one of Europe’s leading orchestras.

Rachmaninov’s hard-won Symphony No. 2 – a profoundly personal triumph forged in the failure of his First Symphony over a decade earlier – is the centrepiece of this concert by Manchester’s Hallé orchestra and its Principal Conductor Kahchun Wong. Its expansive, late-Romantic lyricism meets the glowing, pealing soundscape of Ravel’s ‘The Valley of the Bells’ from his Miroirs, orchestrated by Colin Matthews. Pianist Alexandra Dariescu makes her Proms debut in Nadia Boulanger’s boldly poetic 1912 Fantasy for piano and orchestra, with its eclectic nods to Franck, Fauré and Stravinsky.

From the Alps to the Auvergne
As part of today's Prom's Marathon, Linton Stephens gives us another chance to catch the London Philharmonic Orchestra & conductor Edward Gardner with soprano Louise Alder in music by Joseph Canteloube and Richard Strauss.
Step into the great outdoors with Edward Gardner and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Childhood walks with his father through the mountains and villages of his native Auvergne inspired Joseph Canteloube’s much-loved orchestral songs. ‘Glorious’ soprano Louise Alder – soloist at last year’s Last Night of the Proms – returns, performing these luscious miniatures, not heard at the Proms since 2010. These sonic strolls limber us up for Richard Strauss’s epic journey up to a mountain summit. Listeners must traverse glaciers, thickets and pastures, survive storms and cross streams to gain the triumphant orchestral vistas that are the climax to the composer’s mighty 'An Alpine Symphony'.

Elgar’s Cello Concerto
Linton Stephens continues Radio 3's Proms Marathon with Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández making his Proms debut in Elgar’s concerto plus music by Webern and Walton from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Le Figaro called him a 'new cello genius'. Now prize-winning Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández makes his Proms debut with Elgar's achingly passionate concerto. He joins Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for a programme that measures out the griefs, conflicts and shifting identities of the 20th century, opening with Webern's lushly Romantic 1908 Passacaglia, whose sequence of intricate variations finds a ghostly echo in the finale of Walton's Second Symphony. Premiered in 1960, the latter work looks back rather than forwards, rejecting the avant-garde in favour of a dense, Expressionistic intensity.

Proms Across the UK: Mozart and Mendelssohn
R3's Proms Marathon continues with Petroc Trelawny, and another chance to hear the Polish violinist Maria Włoszczowska directing the Royal Northern Sinfonia in a programme of works by Grażyna Bacewicz, Mozart and a 14-year-old Mendelssohn, at The Fire Station in Sunderland, on 25th July.
They were joined by pianist Christian Ihle Hadland for Mendelssohn's rarely heard double concerto.
Polish violinist Maria Włoszczowska directed the Royal Northern Sinfonia in a programme of musical innovations and provocations. Grażyna Bacewicz turns an 18th-century entertainment into a witty, piquant and often densely beautiful miniature. The 14-year-old Mendelssohn had no model for his unusual Concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings but combined his two soloists with ingenious and eloquent results. At the other end of his career, Mozart took the symphony to new heights in his final three efforts in the genre, beginning with the vivacious Symphony No. 39, whose brilliance veers on the cusp of darkness.

Rossini’s ‘Stabat mater’
R3's Proms Marathon continues with Petroc Trelawny, and another chance to hear the BBC Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, conductor Nil Venditti, and star soloists perform Rossini's Stabat Mater, plus the Proms premiere of Respighi's Church Windows.
Fragments of Gregorian chant are reassembled in the jewel-toned mosaic that is Respighi’s 1927 Church Windows – given its Proms debut by Nil Venditti and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Four richly scored orchestral movements each depict a different scene in sound: a shimmering nocturne for ‘The Flight into Egypt’, a luminous portrait of St Clare and explosive martial conflict for ‘The Archangel Saint Michael’.
Ancient musical models also inspired Rossini’s operatic Stabat mater – a powerful spiritual statement from the master of secular drama.

This week, Soweto is joined by pioneering American jazz trio The Bad Plus. This year, they have decided to say farewell after 26 years of boundary-pushing music. Founded in 2000, they have built a reputation for fearless improvisation, adventurous compositions and a sound that draws just as much from rock and contemporary classical music as it does from jazz tradition.
From Monday to Thursday, and in a break from the usual format of 4/4, they will be taking us on a journey through the history of the band with four of their own tracks, featuring reflections from founding members bassist Reid Anderson and drummer David King recorded at this year’s Love Supreme Jazz Festival.
Also in the programme, there is music from Eddie Durham, Allexa Nava and Thundercat.
‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in two richly contrasting works by Richard Strauss: the sumptuous waltzes and elegant comedy of the Der Rosenkavalier Suite, and the heroic sweep of Ein Heldenleben. Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729) was a pioneer in the history of music, one of the first to bring sonatas and cantatas into the French repertoire, and the first woman in France to compose a performed opera. She explored and pushed further the possibilities of musical composition, as well as writing some of the most beautiful pieces of the Baroque era. She worked under the patronage of the most powerful figures of this Grand Siècle that saw the absolute reign of Louis XIV and the construction of his dreamed Versailles. And yet, there are still many elements of mystery and unknown in this composer's story. Kate Molleson invites you to (re)discover the extraordinary adventures of a gifted musician, with a soupçon of French flair and lots of gorgeous music.
In this second episode, we follow young Elisabeth Jacquet as she joins the court in Versailles, and the circle of the most powerful woman in France. She also publishes her first harpsichord pieces.

An afternoon spent listening to a military band in a Bohemian park inspired the arresting fanfares and jagged folk-rhythms of Janáček’s last and best-loved orchestral work, composed 100 years ago, the Sinfonietta: less a conventional symphony than a sequence of sonic frescoes. Jakub Hrůša and the BBC Symphony Orchestra are joined by ‘extraordinary’ Czech pianist Lukáš Vondráček for the Everest of Romantic piano concertos – Rachmaninov’s Third, for many years performed only by the composer himself. The concert opens with the haunting folk melodies and dancing rhythms of Kaprálová’s Suita rustica.

‘An artist lives a double life,’ Tchaikovsky wrote. The Berlin Philharmonic and Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko return to the Proms with a concert of concealed identities and confessions, musical secrets and hidden selves, explored in two Romantic orchestral classics. The secret theme concealed within Elgar’s ‘Enigma’ Variations remains elusive, but the heart-on-sleeve appeal of the composer’s wistful, warmly personal musical sketches of his friends is anything but. The personal conflicts that lie beneath the tumultuous surface of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 are darker: Fate assails the listener before the music casts off its grip in a defiantly joyous finale.

2026 Proms season showcase - Lukas Sternath and the NOVO Quartet
Specially recorded performances from some of the musical stars of the future. The NOVO Quartet from Denmark play Smetana’s String Quartet No. 1 in E minor, 'From My Life.' Composed in 1876, he wrote that: 'My intention was to paint a tone picture of my life. The first movement depicts my youthful leanings toward art, the Romantic atmosphere, the inexpressible yearning for something I could neither express nor define, and also a kind of warning of my future misfortune... The long insistent note in the finale owes its origin to this. It is the fateful ringing in my ears of the high-pitched tones which in 1874 announced the beginning of my deafness.'
And that is followed by the Austrian pianist Lukas Sternath's recent Wigmore Hall debut performance. As one reviewer wrote: 'This is no ordinary star but one born on wings of song for which this hallowed much loved hall is famous'... Just two works on his programme linked by the motif of death, with Liszt’s Funérailles transformed into Schubert’s last Sonata, written just months before his untimely death.

From the BBC Proms, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla conducts the Oslo Philharmonic in Prokofiev’s dramatic Romeo and Juliet and Stravinsky’s distinctive Violin Concerto, featuring violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja.
At the Beaune Festival, Emmanuelle Haïm conducts Le Concert d’Astrée in devotional music by Leonardo Leo and a sparkling string concerto by Francesco Durante, with soprano Julia Lezhneva.

Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729) was a pioneer in the history of music, one of the first to bring sonatas and cantatas into the French repertoire, and the first woman in France to compose a performed opera. She explored and pushed further the possibilities of musical composition, as well as writing some of the most beautiful pieces of the Baroque era. She worked under the patronage of the most powerful figures of this Grand Siècle that saw the absolute reign of Louis XIV and the construction of his dreamed Versailles. And yet, there are still many elements of mystery and unknown in this composer's story. Kate Molleson invites you to (re)discover the extraordinary adventures of a gifted musician, with a soupçon of French flair and lots of gorgeous music.
In this fourth episode, we see how Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre is among the first to develop the sonata in French music, and how she portrays legendary heroines in her series of cantatas.

Carmel Smickersgill: A Brick Thrown with Love - BBC co-commission: world premiere
Ralph Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 9 in E minor
Andrew Manze conducts the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in a celebration of English music, including a commission from Carmel Smickersgill exploring resilience in the face of tragedy. The starkly beautiful landscape of Thomas Hardy’s Wessex haunts the score of Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No. 9 – pastoral yearning tinged with darker wartime memories and fears, a contrast to the radiant spiritual affirmation of the composer’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, with its shimmering clouds of strings. ‘Eloquent’ Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma makes her Proms debut in Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto, another work steeped in thoughts of war and hopes of peace.

Verity Sharp shares the sounds of our latest exclusive collaboration session, in which folk duo Milkweed met the guitarist Raphael Roginski.
Drawing on the historical landscape and roots music of Eastern Europe, as well as on blues, jazz and primitive guitar from America, the Polish guitarist, composer and musicologist Raphael Roginski is known for the intimacy and mysticism of his sound. Reinterpreting the works of John Coltrane and Bach on solo guitar, Roginski has gathered a reputation for his capacity to imaginatively travel through established musical forms to arrive at something totally new. His work has deep roots in Poland’s Jewish culture, a heritage he explores through the work of two of his bands, Shofar and Cukunft, while his recent album, Žaltys, explores Lithuanian folklore and nature.
Raphael is joined in session by the UK-based duo Milkweed. Moulded by a fascination with myth, legend and folklore, they arrive with freshly-made field recordings, tape players, a one hundred-year old banjo and pockets full of found instruments (including an elderly conker and a single bell). Their recent album Folklore 1979, recorded with a healthy dose of cassette fuzz, sets words from an old ‘70s edition of The Folklore Society's journal to the sounds of glitchy banjo and gentle drum-skin hits. These anonymous artists are musicians committed to invention and originality.
