SAT 14:00 Record Review (m002n89d)
Monteverdi's L'Orfeo in Building a Library with Joseph McHardy and Andrew McGregor

Andrew McGregor presents some of the week's best new classical releases.

2.10pm
Kirsten Gibson joins Andrew to discuss four new releases ranging from Godowsky's Java Suite to Purcell and Lanier from the Flutes & Frets Duo.

3pm
Building a Library. Keyboard player and choir director Joseph McHardy assesses recordings of Monteverdi's seminal opera L'Orfeo, and makes a top recommendation. Written in 1607, it's based on the Greek legend of Orpheus, and tells the story of his descent to Hades and his fruitless attempt to bring his dead bride Eurydice back to the living world. By the early 17th century the traditional intermedio - a musical sequence between the acts of a straight play - was evolving into the form of a complete musical drama or “opera.” Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo moved this process out of its experimental era and provided the first fully-developed example of the new genre.

Top choice:
Monica Piccinini (soprano, La Musica), Anna Simboli (soprano, Euridice, Proserpina), Sara Mingardo (contralto, Speranza, Messageria), Furio Zanasi (tenor, Orfeo), Luca Dordoli (tenor, Apollo), Sergio Foresti (bass, Caronte), Antonio Abete (bass, Plutone), Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini (conductor)
Naïve OP30439

3.45pm
Record of the Week. Andrew picks the new recording that has most impressed him this week.

SAT 18:00 Opera on 3 (m002n89s)
Giordano’s Andrea Chenier

Live from the New York Met, Giordano’s passionate opera Andrea Chenier.

Giordano’s passionate tragedy stars tenor Piotr Beczała as the virtuous poet who falls victim to the intrigue and violence of the French Revolution. He joins soprano Sonya Yoncheva as Chénier’s aristocratic lover, Maddalena di Coigny, with baritone Igor Golovatenko as Carlo Gérard, the agent of the Reign of Terror who seals their fates

The score is lush and stirring, with emotions expressed powerfully and immediately by the orchestra and by the singers. In Act I, for example, the title character’s famous solo “Un dì, all’azzurro spazio” pulls the listener directly into the world of Chénier. The soprano must produce an amazing depth of expression in her great Act III aria, “La mamma morta,” and the baritone has the thrillingly impressive solo “Nemico della patria.” The tenor and soprano also express their love in two of the most charged duets in Italian opera, one in Act II and another as they face the guillotine together in the opera’s finale.

Presented from the Met by Debra Lew Harder and Ira Siff.

The London Symphony Orchestra plays Tchaikovsky and Vaughan Williams

Tchaikovsky faces his demons in the fate-filled Fourth Symphony, before the ravishing pastoral music of English composer Vaughan Williams in his seldom-heard Flos Campi and Dona nobis pacem.
Tchaikovsky soars out of the depths towards a glorious resolution in his Symphony No 4.
After the interval, Tchaikovsky's Russian intensity is tempered by Vaughan Williams' complex and radical brand of English pastoralism as the viola soloist Antoine Tamestit, an LSO Spotlight Artist, joins the orchestra and its chorus for his Flos Campi. Setting words from the biblical poem ‘Song of Songs’, Flos Campi (Flower of the Field) is a love song of often beguiling beauty. And the LSO’s intriguing programme ends with one of Vaughan Williams' most powerful works, the forty-minute long cantata Dona nobis pacem. Completed in 1936, Dona nobis pacem is scored for choir, vocal soloists and orchestra and draws on the composer’s own experiences of war, and eyes the impending cataclysm. It’s emotionally direct, a passionate, anguished and, at times, almost unbearably beautiful cry for peace.

Presented by Martin Handley.

Accompanying Austen

Adrian Johnston on Becoming Jane

As we celebrate 250 years since Jane Austen's birth, Antonia Quirke speaks to composers who've scored original music for Austen adaptations about their musical choices and also about the music Austen enjoyed. For the first episode of the series, composer Adrian Johnston tells Antonia about how he delved through Jane Austen's own music books when he was composing the score for the 2007 biopic Becoming Jane. Adrian tells Antonia about his impressions of Austen's musical albums, about the composers she enjoyed and the variety of songs and pieces in her repertoire. He explains why it was important to him to stay true to the music and songs that Austen would have been familiar with. Antonia and Adrian discuss how Austen's piano playing features at crucial moments in the film - he shares guide tracks he made for the film's lead Anne Hathaway - and together they discuss the film's melodic echoes and Austen's own musical memory.

Royal Scottish National Orchestra

Ian Skelly welcomes listeners to the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall for a jazz-infused programme from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra featuring music by Rachmaninov, Gershwin and George Anthiel.

Conductor Patrick Hahn steps off the podium and up to the piano for George Antheil’s A Jazz Symphony in its 1955 revision – a work that revels in the brash energy of the Jazz Age. Antheil’s score is a riot of syncopation and swagger, where classical form collides with the rhythms of ragtime and swing, and where the piano takes centre stage in a dazzling dialogue with percussion (Obi Jenne) and double bass (Jakob Krupp).

Fellow conductor Frank Dupree also demonstrates his piano skills in Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, a cornerstone of the American concert repertoire. Written in 1925, it’s a piece that dances effortlessly between worlds – the elegance of European symphonic tradition and the irresistible pulse of jazz.

The programme closes with Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 3, composed in exile during the 1930's. This is music steeped in nostalgia and longing, yet alive with rhythmic vitality and orchestral brilliance. Its sweeping themes and rich harmonies speak of a composer looking back to his Russian roots while embracing the modernity of his time.

Rachel Portman on Emma

As we approach 250 years since Jane Austen's birth, Antonia Quirke speaks to composers who've scored original music for Austen adaptations about their musical choices and also about the music Austen enjoyed. In this episode, Rachel Portman tells Antonia about how she composed her Oscar-winning score for the 1996 film adaptation of Emma, starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Rachel's loved the book since she studied it at school. She talks to Antonia about the importance of devising a main theme for the central character, which could then be shifted and transformed throughout the score. She discusses her process of composition and staying true to the instruments Austen would have known. Together, Antonia and Rachel explore the scene of Mr Knightley's proposal, how the score holds back, before letting go.

To New York with Love

While revolution rages at home, Prokofiev dreams up his Classical Symphony, invokes ancient gods in a fiery cantata, and finally boards a ship for America – where mixed reviews and new commissions await. Even away from home, his music tells stories, from pagan invocations to nostalgic piano miniatures.

Swan Lake Selections

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales are joined by their Principal Guest Conductor, Jaime Martín, to perform three charming, snow-dusted works. We begin in the Norwegian mountains, with the first suite that Edvard Grieg extracted from his incidental music to the play Peer Gynt. Although the suite opens with sunrise in the African desert, it finishes in the infamous Hall of the Mountain King under Norway's Dovrefjell. Carl Nielsen thought that the flute was an idyllic and pastoral instrument, and he wrote his Flute Concerto with that very much in mind, perfectly encapsulating Denmark's landscape. And finally, after the interval, we travel to snowy Moscow for Tchaikovsky's celebrated ballet, Swan Lake, and a concert suite created from Jaime Martín's own selection of movements from the ballet.

Recorded in Hoddinott Hall on 11th December, presented by Al Ryan.

Grieg: Peer Gynt Suite No.1, Op 46
Nielsen: Flute Concerto, FS 119

Accompanying Austen

Jeremy Sams on Persuasion

As we approach 250 years since Jane Austen's birth, Antonia Quirke speaks to composers who've scored original music for Austen adaptations about their musical choices and also about the music Austen encountered. This time, Jeremy Sams talks to Antonia about his BAFTA-winning score for a film Antonia has watched many times - the 1995 BBC adaptation of Persuasion, directed by Roger Michell. Jeremy tells Antonia about devising a theme for Anne Elliot, the book's central character, played by Amanda Root on screen. He talks about the melody's descending sevenths and how they capture Anne's internalized pain. Together, Antonia and Jeremy explore how Jeremy's soundtrack builds, through the Italian arias which Anne watches at a concert in Bath, to the circus scene which soundtracks the film's climax. They discuss the use of Bach and Chopin in the score and why they felt suitable for the film. Jeremy's score was never released as a soundtrack - but he plays excerpts of his compositions to Antonia, culminating in the final scene at sea which sees Anne embrace a very different future.

Ruth Barrett on Sanditon

As we approach 250 years since Jane Austen's birth, Antonia Quirke speaks to composers who've scored original music for Austen adaptations about their musical choices and also about the music Austen encountered. This time, Ruth Barrett talks to Antonia about her soundtrack for the ITV series, Sanditon. It was Austen's final novel but it was abandoned unfinished four months before she died. It's a work that imagines an emerging seaside resort and the entrepreneurs who are looking to build its reputation. Ruth Barrett put together an eclectic playlist to inspire her when she was devising her score - featuring everyone from Henry Purcell to The Clash. She talks to Antonia about the importance of folk in her score and how she assembled a live band of folk musicians who performed on set. Ruth reveals how Austen was a fan of folk and that the score features some folk songs Austen loved. Together, Ruth and Antonia discuss the rowdiness of the balls Austen would have attended and Ruth reflects on how her impressions of Austen changed after working on the project.

FRI 21:45 The Essay (m002nbfk)
Accompanying Austen

Fernando Velázquez on Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

As we approach 250 years since Jane Austen's birth, Antonia Quirke speaks to composers who've scored original music for Austen adaptations about their musical choices and also about the music Austen encountered. For the last episode in the series, Antonia is joined by Fernando Velázquez who composed the soundtrack for the 2016 movie Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It's a film which roughly follows the plot of Austen's novel about the Bennet sisters, with a heavy dash of post-apocalyptic and zombie fiction thrown in. Fernando and Antonia discuss the range of music in the movie's score - from minuets, to swashbuckling zombie battles, to climactic romantic scenes. Fernando reveals how he borrowed motifs from classical composers, how he hid clues in the score, and how important it was for him that his musicians played in the right style. He explains why he conducted the Basque National Orchestra when capturing the soundtrack and reflects with Antonia on why the characters of Elizabeth and Darcy have endured and are appreciated by audiences in Spain.

With short extracts from:
Fernando Velázquez, An Illustrated History of England 1700-1800, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), Varese Sarabande
Fernando Velázquez, Menuet Des Mortes Vivants, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), Verese Sarabande
Fernando Velázquez, Zombies Are Fed / Attack / Showdown, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), Verese Sarabande
Fernando Velázquez, After The Explosion, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), Verese Sarabande

FRI 22:00 Late Junction (m002nbfm)
Max Syedtollan and Mermaid Chunky in session

An unexpected, hastily-wrapped and oddly-shaped festive gift lands in your lap: what could it be? Inspired by the traditional generosity of festive times, we deliver a sonic present of a festive party session, to you, dear Late Junction listener! So put that party hat on, pop some tinsel around your shoulders, cosy up to the radio and join Verity Sharp for a special improvised Late Junction collaboration session, recorded at the BBC, with visual artists and musical duo Mermaid Chunky meeting the merrie-making composer and performer, Max Syedtollan.

Mermaid Chunky are an audio-visual duo of artists Freya Tate and Moina Moin, who describe themselves as 'two maidens harvesting in the mud club enclosures'. They make feverish, wonky, surreal and playful medieval lore meets post-punk electronic sounds. Whilst they forewarn any attendees to their lives shows that the show may 'cause havoc on your retinas' due to the 'euphoric sculptural visuals', we expect some truly ear bending sounds from their Late Junction session.

Max Syedtollan is a Glasgow-based composer, researcher and performer. His recent release for bison records is Prynhawn Da!, a 34-minute piece written with the intention of being 'blasted off the back of a lorry' whilst a troupe of larger-than-life-sized wicker figures parade down the streets. It's a doff of the hat to Mummers plays, those traditional secular folk performances that are often staged for fun in streets, homes or pubs, around Christmas and New Year. He has also released works on Glasgow’s GLARC label, and makes radio pieces for BBC Radio 3 and London’s Resonance FM.

Elsewhere on the show, Verity Sharp shares her favourite new releases from the worlds of left-field and adventurous music making.

Jack DeJohnette in tribute

‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades.

Tonight Soweto pays homage to an innovator of the music and on his instruments, jazz drummer and pianist Jack DeJohnette, who sadly died on Sunday 26th October at the age of 83. He was a highly-acclaimed bandleader and was internationally celebrated for his unique sound and dedication to searching for explorative ways of music making. Jack was well known for his time spent performing with Miles Davis, including on Miles’ timeless ‘Bitches Brew’ album. He also worked with other fellow greats including Keith Jarrett, John Patton, and Jackie McLean.

In this Friday night edition, Soweto reflects on the life and legacy of this seminal musician.
