400 Years of the Royal Collection
Buckingham Palace
Ian Skelly tours the world-famous home of British monarchs, exploring its art and music, featuring composers from Byrd and Vivaldi to Errollyn Wallen. Queen Victoria, who had a great love of music and dancing, built Buckingham Palace’s enormous ballroom in 1847. She was also a musician, and Ian’s tour takes in a magnificent gilt grand piano which she played with Prince Albert and their friend Felix Mendelssohn. The many famous paintings that hang in the Gallery include works by Rubens, Canaletto and Vermeer’s depiction of a lady playing the virginal, and Ian ventures into the Royal Mews to marvel at the majestic Gold State Coach used in coronation processions. The music includes tracks by Byrd, Vivaldi, Mendelssohn, Ruth Gipps and Errollyn Wallen, Master of the King’s Music since 2024.
2025 marks the 400th anniversary of the appointment of the first Master of the King’s Music, art dealer Nicholas Lanier, who built the foundations of what would become The Royal Collection. Today the Collection comprises some 700,000 pieces including major art works, manuscripts and instruments, from ancient times right up to the present day, spread over 13 royal residences in the UK.
In this landmark four-part series, Ian Skelly tours four of the most art-laden royal residences in the UK – Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, St James’s Palace and Holyrood Palace – to explore the stories and musical connections behind some of the most fascinating objects in the Royal Collection, giving listeners special behind-doors access to these history-steeped locations.

Rachmaninov's Etudes Tableaux in Building a Library with Keelan Carew and Andrew McGregor
Andrew McGregor presents some of the week's best new classical releases.
2.10pm
Violinist Tasmin Little joins Andrew to discuss four new releases that have caught her attention.
3pm
Building a Library. Keelan Carew asseses recordings of Rachmaninov's Etudes Tableaux and makes a top recommendation.
Rachmaninov composed his two sets of Etudes-Tableaux ("study pictures"), Op. 33 and Op. 39, between 1911 and 1917, before he left Russia. They were intended to be "musical evocations of external visual stimuli", but Rachmaninoff did not disclose what inspired each one, stating: "I do not believe in the artist that discloses too much of his images. Let [the listener] paint for themselves what it most suggests." The pieces demand high levels of virtuosity to perform, calling for unconventional hand positions, wide leaps for the fingers and considerable technical strength.
Top choice:
Nikolai Lugansky (piano)

Annabel Croft
Annabel Croft first picked up a tennis racquet at the age of nine. Within six years, she’d become the youngest British player to compete in the Wimbledon main draw for almost a century. At the age of 17, she won the junior championships at both Wimbledon and the Australian Open, and at 18 she was the British number one. Then – aged 21 – she retired from tennis and moved into broadcasting. She was soon back at the world’s major tennis tournaments, this time as a commentator and reporter. In 2023 her competitive spirit found a new outlet: she took part in Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One and came fourth. Her musical choices include works by Pachelbel, Handel, John Rutter and Prokofiev.

Blow winds, blow
‘Blow, winds, and crack your cheeks!’ railed King Lear and we start and finish with the violence of winds, on land and sea. Joseph Conrad, Zora Neale Hurston and Seamus Heaney write about the unequal battle with an unseen enemy, and you can hear the smallness of humankind in the eye of a storm, in the works of Britten’s Peter Grimes and Vaughan Williams’s Sinfonia Antartica.
Gentler winds feed the senses and summon memories for Derek Walcott and William Wordsworth, while Emily Dickinson welcomes in the footless stranger. But there are unearthly winds that make people behave strangely, in Joan Didion’s description of the Santa Anas, and Voltaire believed an east wind could bring utter despair.
Composers from Debussy to Toru Takemitsu and Nirmali Fenn have taken the movement of wind as inspiration in their work. And the Swedish Chamber Choir vocally recall the gusty mountain wind in Jan Sandstrom’s Biegga louthe.
There’s more bluster from the readers Adrian Scarborough and Amaka Okafor who bring to life those great windbags and blowhards, Shakespeare’s Polonius and Pam Ayres’s know-it-all husband.

Milton Babbitt: Strictly systematic structuring of sounds
Kate Molleson and Gillian Moore present BBC Radio 3's series exploring the pivotal 'modern' musical works of the 20th century, the groundbreaking composers who created them, and the radical cultural and artistic movements which gave rise to them.
In this episode, Kate explores the history of Serialism - that terrifier of music theory students - and one of the key methods through which radical composers tried to break from the past during the 20th century. We’ll pay a visit to both the Viennese master Arnold Schönberg and the Parisian author of an article entitled “Schönberg is Dead”; we'll find out which composer was nicknamed '12-Note Lizzie'; and we'll hear what happened when this controversial compositional technique crossed over into jazz culture. At the heart of the programme, the chance to listen to Milton Babbitt’s landmark work Philomel (1964), which features scored parts for both live and pre-recorded soprano voice, and is one of the very first compositions for the synthesizer.
Born in Philadelphia in 1916, Babbitt was an American composer and academic whose interests included mathematical research and experiments with new electronic instruments. He was a founding member of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center.

Mahler's Fourth Symphony
In tonight's Radio 3 in Concert, performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra with their principal conductor Edward Gardner, Mahler's Fourth Symphony meets a modern classic - Hans Abrahamsen's song-cycle, Let me tell you. It's a song-cycle based on Paul Griffiths' novel of the same name, and it follows the narrative of Ophelia from Shakespeare's Hamlet as she tells her tragic story from her own perspective. The soprano Jennifer France was the winner of the 2018 Critics’ Circle Emerging Talent Award, and she joins the London Philharmonic Orchestra to sing Abrahamsen's Let me tell you.
Mahler's playful Fourth Symphony is the last of his Wunderhorn symphonies, and it includes the song setting Das himmlische Leben (The Heavenly Life), which depicts a child's dream of heaven. Mahler wrote his Fourth Symphony in 1899 during his holiday in Bad Aussee, and the whole symphony is imbued with the sounds of nature, bird songs, sleigh bells and morning bells.
Recorded on 3rd October at the Royal Festival Hall in London, and presented by Martin Handley.

Empty Spaces
Liz Berry - Selly Oak Library, Birmingham
Poet Liz Berry visits a now empty building - Selly Oak Library in Birmingham, which closed in 2017. Her own mother served as a librarian for several decades and Liz reflects on how the the values she inherited from her mother's commitment, curiosity, and care are inseparable from a library's be-shelved walls.
Empty Spaces explores the beauty and melancholy of abandoned places that still hold meaning. Each episode invites a poet to inhabit one site of their choosing and breathe imagination, memory, and lyricism back into the surroundings via poetry.
Liz stands outside the building, to write a poem about the library's recent demise. Opened in 1906, the red-brick library now stands as a witness to a century of community life in bustling Selly Oak. As Liz reflects on the building’s history, she explores how libraries nurture belonging, enlightenment and imagination… and mourns their disappearance.

To mark 50 years since the death of Shostakovich, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and their Principal Conductor, Ryan Bancroft, perform two major works that Shostakovich wrote in the 1940s. The First Violin Concerto had to wait seven years before it could be performed due to Shostakovich's censure by the Soviet authorities, but the emotive work has been hugely popular ever since. His 7th Symphony depicted the Nazi siege of Leningrad, and was performed from within the besieged city by local musicians. The mammoth work become an enduring symbol of resilience and resistance against tyranny.

Jay Hulme - St Roberts Cave, Knaresborough
Poet Jay Hulme journeys into the moss-covered cave that was once home to the fourteenth-century hermit St Robert of Knaresborough. Beloved in his time and a pilgrimage site for centuries after his death, his cave has fallen back into obscurity. Now overgrown and layered with graffiti, the cave becomes a portal through which Jay contemplates faith, solitude, and the traces we leave behind. His poem meditates on how sacredness endures, even in forgotten places.
The series Empty Spaces explores the beauty and melancholy of abandoned places that still hold meaning. Each episode invites a poet to inhabit one site of their choosing and breathe imagination, memory, and lyricism back into the surroundings via poetry.

Empty Spaces
Sean Lìonadh - Govan Docks, Glasgow
Poet Sean Lìonadh revisits the Govan Docks on the River Clyde. Once a thriving centre of Glasgow’s shipbuilding heritage, the huge concrete basins have been abandoned since 1988. Through poetry and reflection, Sean uncovers how the docks shaped his community, what their decay reveals about change and loss, and how new waves of gentrification stir complex feelings of identity and home.
The series Empty Spaces explores the beauty and melancholy of abandoned places that still hold meaning. Each episode invites a poet to inhabit one site of their choosing and breathe imagination, memory, and lyricism back into the surroundings via poetry.

Arvo Volmer joins the BBC National Orchestra of Wales to conduct a varied concert on the theme of nature. Vaughan Williams’ overture to The Wasps begins the programme, opening with the raspy buzz of swarming wasps. Ester Mägi’s Bukoolika takes its inspiration from herding songs and birdcall in this inwardly gentle, wistful, and sometimes awestruck contemplation of nature, and Helen Grime’s night-sky-blue depicts the natural world after dark, with trumpeter Matilda Lloyd making her debut with the Orchestra for this performance. Nielsen's 4th Symphony completes the programme, a masterpiece in which he expresses the inextinguishable spirit of life.

Zakiya McKenzie - Les Landes, Jersey

Connecting the Caribbean landscapes of her heritage to the windswept outcrop of the Channel Islands, Zakiya reflects on displacement, resilience, and how the sea carries stories across generations.

Empty Spaces
Jean Sprackland - Foxes' Castle, Somerset
Poet Jean Sprackland turns her gaze toward Foxes’ Castle, the ivy-clad ruin of an eighteenth-century farmhouse near her home in Somerset. Once filled with life and love, now a hollow of brick and wildlife, the house becomes a canvas for Jean’s meditations on grief, memory, and the way nature reclaims what humans leave behind.
The series Empty Spaces explores the beauty and melancholy of abandoned places that still hold meaning. Each episode invites a poet to inhabit one site of their choosing and breathe imagination, memory, and lyricism back into the surroundings via poetry.

Nobukazu Takemura’s mixtape
Verity Sharp shares a wide-ranging and free-flowing mix of music curated by Japanese artist and composer, Nobukazu Takemura. Breaking through in the '90s as part of Kyoto's nu-jazz collective Spiritual Vibes, Takemura's solo output and resume of collaborations over the past three decades reflects his commitment to the sonically unpredictable and unusual, whether that's expressed through chamber music, glitch or electronica. Child's View - one of his ongoing aliases - encapsulates a key artistic ambition: to see and hear and meet the world with a playful and open-minded perspective, an approach evident in his latest album of idiosyncratic miniatures entitled 'knot of meanings'.

Matt Carmichael and the WDR Big Band in concert
‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades.
This Friday night, Soweto presents concert highlights from gifted Glasgow based saxophonist Matt Carmichael and Grammy-award winning German public broadcast ensemble, the WDR Big Band. Matt has shared three albums to date, and his most recent record titled “dancing with embers” was released earlier this year.
The musicians came together back in April at RWTH Aachen University, for a performance titled “Scottish Jazz Fantasies”. They showcased some of Matt's compositions, specially arranged for the WDR Big Band by their chief conductor, American saxophonist and member of the fusion band “Yellow Jackets”, Bob Mintzer. Expect music that blends influences of the Scottish Highlands and jazz, with a vast big band sound.
