Your perfect Sunday soundtrack

Sarah Walker with three hours of classical music to reflect, restore and refresh.

Today, Sarah has sumptuous orchestral music including a piano concerto by Ravel, the iconic opening movement of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, and a symphonic poem by Liszt that is rumoured to have been Wagner’s personal favourite.

There’s also a Bach prelude with an entirely new melody composed on top, a choral piece by Roxanna Panufnik that combines timeless plainsong with lilting repetition, and a burst of Mediterranean sunshine in a rhapsody by Emmanuel Chabrier.

And for this week’s Choral Reflection, Sarah’s choice is Sir James MacMillan’s The Gallant Weaver, a setting of a love poem by Robert Burns that conjures the sounds of Scotland.

SUN 19:15 Sunday Feature (m002fm1s)
Sound Sources

Some of the most important and genre defining movements in rock and pop have their roots in classical music's avant garde. And some of the most innovative songwriters and musicians are those who dig deep into the concert halls, conservatoires and rehearsal rooms for new ideas and techniques to push their own music even further. Join Elizabeth Alker, author of the forthcoming book, Everything We Do is Music, for this very personal investigation of what makes great contemporary music.

She’ll be backed up by musicians with a similar philosophy – you’ll hear from her guests Paul McCartney, Sonic Youth founder Lee Renaldo, Suzanne Ciani - the first woman to solo-compose the soundtrack to a Hollywood movie, composer Jean-Michel Jarre, DJ and producer Marea Stamper aka The Blessed Madonna and musician Nils Frahm.

As the daughter of a pair of classically trained musicians and teachers, Elizabeth grew up playing the clarinet, saxophone, recorder and piano. But as a child she was as likely to hear a record by Bob Dylan, Billie Holiday or Mike Oldfield as a Chopin nocturne, a Satie gnossienne or a violin concerto by Shostakovich. Hopping between musical genres is natural to her, as borne out by a career combining rock journalism for BBC Radio 6 Music and hosting BBC Radio 3's Classical Live and Unclassified. For her - as the composer Steve Reich once told her - "good music is good music".

In this programme Elizabeth will share what she's learnt on her own trajectories from classical conservatoire to club dancefloor, between the concert hall and the sweaty rock venue joining the dots from Musique Concrete to The Beatles, from Stockhausen to Sonic Youth, from John Cage to Nils Frahm, from Pauline Oliveros to techno. You will never hear their music in quite the same way.

We'll hear about the extraordinary party which shaped Birtwistle's style, traverse the ancient traditions of England's distant past and discover how Birtwistle channeled a sense of deep mythic time into his knotty, visceral music.

MON 16:00 Composer of the Week (m001jcpy)
Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677)

Raised for success

Donald Macleod and Laurie Stras explore Barbara Strozzi’s early success as a singer and the role of her father in promoting his daughter.

The singer, and composer Barbara Strozzi neither held any position at church or court, nor had a consistent patron, and yet she published eight volumes of her own music, and had more secular music in print than any other composer of the era. Over the course of this week, Donald Macleod is joined by Professor Laurie Stras to explore the life of this extraordinary musician, and the world of 17th-century Venice in which she lived and worked. This was a world in which, despite the acknowledged successes of female artists in literature and music, being a successful composer seems to have aroused suspicion, and brought accusations of impropriety.

In Monday’s episode, Donald and Laurie explore Barbara Strozzi’s early success as a singer and the role of her father in promoting his daughter, through his contacts in Venice’s literary Accademias.

Mahler and Mason from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra

Soprano Sophie Bevan joins the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Ryan Wigglesworth for Mahler’s 4th Symphony and the world premiere of a brand new piece written specially for them by Grace-Evangeline Mason. Setting poetry by Oscar Wilde, Sara Teasdale and the composer herself, THE HART is a 5-movement cycle exploring the mysterious power of the white hart in folklore.

Folklore was an important source of inspiration for Gustav Mahler, too, with much of his music steeped in the world of Das Knaben Wunderhorn, a collection of German texts purporting to be folk poetry. The last movement of the Symphony No. 4 sets a poem describing a child’s vision of heaven; taken together with the preceding movements the symphony seems to paint a luminous musical picture of childhood innocence.

The concert opens with an orchestral depiction of a character about as far from innocent as is possible – Strauss’s vivid tone poem of the philandering Don Juan.

Recorded on 5th June 2025 at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

Presented by Penny Gore.

Uchronias

The Sensible Thing Was to Kill Him

“Uchronia” - noun - neologism. An alternative history or genre of speculative fiction that reimagines historical events or characters in a new light.

Five startling, counterfactual stories featuring Chopin, Sibelius, Stravinsky, Beethoven and Satie. These stories were originally created for classical music magazine Scherzo from the imagination of Spanish writer and radio presenter Martín Llade, with hints of Borges and Marcel Schwob.

Uchronias straddles the gap between fact and fiction, creating hypothetical, “what if” scenarios around 19th and 20th century composers and their lives.

Steven Hough and the Ulster Orchestra play Brahms in Belfast

Mark Forrest showcases the best performances by BBC orchestras, choirs, ensembles and other great performing groups from Europe and around the globe.

We continue our focus on the Ulster Orchestra this week with two pieces recorded in concert at their home venue, the Ulster Hall in Belfast. The programme opens with Copland’s ballet Appalachian Spring, and later we hear pianist Stephen Hough playing Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 1.

There’s more chamber music by Antonin Dvorak too, with the Dover Quartet playing what is probably his best-loved chamber work, the ‘American’ String Quartet No. 12. And we hear more vocal pyrotechnics from the sensational male soprano Bruno da Sá, in concert with baroque group Ensemble 1700 at last year’s Styriarte Festival in Graz, Austria.

WED 16:00 Composer of the Week (m001jcts)
Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677)

Vidman

Donald MacLeod and Laurie Stras examine the role Giovanni Paolo Vidman played in Barbara Strozzi’s life.

In Wednesday’s episode, Donald and Laurie examine the role Giovanni Paolo Vidman played in Barbara Strozzi’s life, as the father of her children, despite being married to someone else.

WED 19:30 Radio 3 in Concert (m002fkhk)
The Sixteen at York Minster

The Sixteen and their conductor Harry Christophers perform their touring Choral Pilgrimage programme in York Minster as part of the York Early Music Festival.

The choir's 2025 Choral Pilgrimage: Angel of Peace is an offering of tranquillity that spans 600 years of choral music. From the devoutly beautiful chant of the medieval abbess Hildegard of Bingen to the magic of a new commission by the contemporary composer Anna Clyne, the music from across the centuries carries a message of peace and acceptance.

The Choral Pilgrimage tour takes its title from words by Cardinal Newman, set to music by Will Todd – ‘Let me be an angel of peace’. Newman’s meditation on the challenge of existence suggests life’s deepest valleys only help its highest mountains feel more wonderful. Perhaps, when we see that joy co-exists with sadness, we’ve been visited by our own Angel of Peace.

Uchronias

Stravinsky Goes Pop

Royal Northern Sinfonia at The Glasshouse

Pianist Benjamin Grosvenor joins the Royal Northern Sinfonia and conductor Dinis Sousa, for an edge-of-the-seat evening. From Grażyna Bacewicz’s Pensieri notturni (Night Thoughts) and Dmitri Shostakovich’s rule breaking Piano Concerto No. 1 to Tchaikovsky’s supercharged and sometimes frenzied Symphony No. 4.

Fresh from the traumatic breakdown of an extremely short lived marriage, battling depression and wrestling with his sexuality, it’s no surprise that the music Tchaikovsky wrote at the time, his Fourth Symphony, is heartfelt. Incredibly emotional, one moment it’s tormented and anguished, the next it’s optimistic and confident. Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto is entirely different – it’s much more ‘economical’ than Tchaikovsky’s ‘full fat’ piece, feeling bright and breezy in comparison, full of uplifting tunes and with frequent sudden changes of direction, keeping the listener wondering where they’re headed next. Bacewicz’s Pensieri notturni starts the night with intrigue – a piece full of unusual textures and ghostly sounds.

Recorded on 14th June 2025 at the The Glasshouse, Gatehead

First Night of the Proms 2025

Live at the BBC Proms: the BBC Singers, BBC Symphony Chorus and Orchestra launch the 2025 season including a world premiere 'The Elements' by Master of the King's Music Errollyn Wallen.

Georgia Mann and Petroc Trelawny present live from the Royal Albert Hall, London, and are joined by comedian & actor Nick Mohammed.

Arthur Bliss: Birthday Fanfare for Sir Henry Wood
Felix Mendelssohn: Overture ‘The Hebrides’ (‘Fingal’s Cave’)
Jean Sibelius: Violin Concerto in D minor

c.7.45pm
Interval: Petroc & Georgia are joined live in the box by tonight's soloist, Lisa Batiashvili, fresh from her performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto and by composer Errollyn Wallen whose brand new piece The Elements will receive its world premiere in just a few minutes time.

c.8.05pm
Errollyn Wallen: The Elements (BBC commission: world premiere)
Ralph Vaughan Williams: Sancta civitas

Lisa Batiashvili, violin
Caspar Singh, tenor
Gerald Finley, bass-baritone
BBC Singers
BBC Symphony Chorus
London Youth Choirs
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Sakari Oramo, conductor

The crash of the seas, the crumbling of city walls and a glimpse of the heavens: all come together in the 2025 First Night. There’s a Scottish sound-picture from Mendelssohn and cool Nordic grandeur from Sibelius. Errollyn Wallen harnesses primal forces in her colourful new orchestral commission, while visions from the Book of Revelation are the starting point for Vaughan Williams’s Sancta civitas.

FRI 21:45 The Essay (m002fkqy)
Uchronias

Satie's Aleph

Experimental firsts

Verity Sharp starts at square one with a selection of novel experiments in sound. Marking the First Night of the Proms 2025, Verity embarks on a series of maiden voyages in sound, selecting pioneering sonic experiments from across the spectrum. From the first person to prepare a piano to the first foray into hip hop, via the first drone, the first drain, the first splicing together of extended tape loops and the first noise orchestra, Verity dives into the archives to bring together a Late Junction library of radically innovative sonic novelties.

Elliot Galvin in concert

‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades.

This Friday night, Soweto shares concert highlights from explorative British pianist Elliot Galvin, recorded live at Low Four Studio as part of this year’s Manchester Jazz Festival.

Elliot was joined by some of UK jazz’s first-rate musicians - drummer Seb Rochford, bassist and vocalist Ruth Goller and violinist Mandhira de Saram. Together they offered an expansive performance of music from Elliot’s synth and piano-guided latest album “The Ruin”.
