SAT 16:00 Sound of Cinema (m002b7cp)
Unusual Instruments

Matthew Sweet looks at unusual instruments used in film scores such as the Cristal Baschet which is a favourite of Cliff Martinez in scores such as Drive.

He considers the use of unusual technology such as the Blaster Beam used by Jerry Goldsmith in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. He traces the development of electronics in film music, from 'electronic tonalities' in Forbidden Planet, to the Moog synthesiser in A Clockwork Orange, and the later use of the Chamberlin by Jon Brion in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

We hear unusual instruments in the scores of blockbusters such as Casino Royale (David Arnold), Sherlock Holmes and Dune (Hans Zimmer). And Matthew's Classic Score of the Week, Spellbound by Miklós Rózsa, features the Theremin.

There’s also a cheeky Offenbach overture that parodies the story of Helen of Troy, a movement from a Mozart piano concerto with a glorious cadenza written by the soloist, and a new release of music from guitarist Guillem Perez-Quer.

Also, Ravel is on the high seas…

He’s also written a novel about both sides of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian people, from the perspectives of two fathers.

He collaborated with Diane Foley, whose son James was executed by Islamic State militants, to create a memoir, American Mother, which was published last year. Most recently his novel Twist focuses on the vulnerability of the undersea cables carrying the world’s internet data.

SUN 18:00 Words and Music (m002b65t)
Art Deco

This programme celebrates the world of Art Deco, a style that came into its own in the years after World War One and was named for an exhibition in Paris in 1925. Even if you don't know the name, the visuals are very familiar: think flapper girls in bobbed haircuts, candy-coloured Miami Beach architecture, French Riviera Hotels or New York's Empire State. The mood is light - it was a time to throw off the war years and show off. You will hear from fun-loving characters like Bertie Wooster and Lorelei Lee; about the lure of international travel in the writing of Ernest Hemingway or innovation in the music of Eric Satie. There is virtuosic showing off from Dorothy Parker and Agatha Christie as well as in Ravel, Germaine Tailleferre and Ella Fitzgerald. And we will touch too on the flipside of all this excess - this was after all a decade of fun that ended in economic depression - in writing from F Scott Fitzgerald and Claude Mackay and the music of Janacek.
The readers are Jessica Raine of The Devil's Hour and Call The Midwife with the Olivier-award-winning star of Hamilton, Giles Terera.

SUN 19:15 Sunday Feature (m002b65w)
Tango Goes East

Juliette Bretan traces the musical adventure of the tango and its interwar explosion eastwards in colder climes like Warsaw. A rich, unexpected history, encountering some of those who have brought it back to life.

So, here's the thing. Tango - so beloved of Radio 3 Breakfast playlists that you can barely sip your coffee before Astor Piazzolla has bandoliered his way into your ears - has a little-known, but rich East European history, fused with genius and tragedy. We all know the origins of Tango created by Argentina's immigrant communities in port cities to incite passion and musical obsession but you could argue it got a compelling, if brief, makeover in the far less sunnier climes of Warsaw, Krakow, Berlin and Moscow. Immigrant music remade by a multi-ethnic community on the cusp of seismic change and unforeseen destruction.

With Poland’s independence after 1918, a wildly talented group of largely Jewish Polish musicians and lyricists took the Tango and made it their own. They even created a global hit with Oh Donna Clara, originally Tango Milonga, in 1929, performed still around the world. Poland may have been the East’s tango hub but Latvian born Oskar Strok was crowned King of the Tango in a career that sprang out of Weimar, infused with Russian romance and hot klezmer licks. Then there were the networks of tango in Lithuania, Romania, and other eastern European countries.

But this story has an earlier reverse chapter. Tens of thousands of East European, mainly Jewish, migrants, heading to Buenos Aires at the turn of the century - the next-best Promised Land -transforming Buenos Aires into the second-largest Jewish city after New York. Did they perhaps influence the tango even before it escaped eastwards?

Producer: Mark Burman

SUN 21:00 20th Century Radicals (m002b661)
Takemitsu: Gardens and Eternity

Kate Molleson and Gillian Moore introduce BBC Radio 3's series exploring the pivotal 'modern' musical works of the 20th century, the groundbreaking composers who created them, and the radical cultural and artistic movements which gave rise to them. This is a story about a hundred years of change. Of war. Of oppression. Of steps towards equality. Of censorship. Of rapid, inescapable technological advancement. Of machines. Of transport. Of science... And it's the story of how art and music responded, the story of the composers who defined the 20th century, who created 'modern' musical art which would shock, appal and fascinate in equal measure, changing the way we listen for ever.

In this episode, Gillian explores the crystalline musical world of Japanese composer Tōru Takemitsu, centring on his work 'From me flows what you call time' from 1990. The composer's mind had been opened to the power and possibility of music during the Second World War, when an officer played the fourteen year old child soldier Takemitsu a French song. This was the beginning of an artistic journey, one that would initially see the composer reject the Japanese musical culture of his upbringing before later learning to cherish it thanks to the unlikely impact of the American iconoclast composer John Cage. Takemitsu's musical heritage, the inspiration he took from the natural world, and his personal theories on music, spirituality and eternity would all make their way into his work ‘From me flows what you call time’, written to celebrate the centenary of the Carnegie Hall.

MON 16:00 Composer of the Week (m002b7dx)
Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729)

Music Runs in the Family

Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729) was a pioneer in the history of music, one of the first to bring sonatas and cantatas into the French repertoire, and the first woman in France to compose a performed opera. She explored and pushed further the possibilities of musical composition, as well as writing some of the most beautiful pieces of the Baroque era. She worked under the patronage of the most powerful figures of this Grand Siècle that saw the absolute reign of Louis XIV and the construction of his dreamed Versailles. And yet, there are still many elements of mystery and unknown in this composer's story. Kate Molleson invites you to (re)discover the extraordinary adventures of a gifted musician, with a soupçon of French flair and lots of gorgeous music.

In this first episode, a young Elisabeth Jacquet, born into a family of instrument makers and musicians from Paris, makes her performing debut. It's an event that makes quite an impression on the Sun King himself.

MON 21:45 The Essay (m001qn92)
The Little Secrets of Great Works

You've Got Mail

It’s in the minutiae of masterpieces that we feel their thrill and power.

In this series of The Essay, five leading cultural voices choose a great work of art and talk about a small, underappreciated aspect of the piece that carries great meaning for them.

For this edition, the children's novelist and screenwriter Elle McNicoll (A Kind of Spark, Like a Charm) describes the inspiration she has taken from a single line of dialogue in Nora Ephron's much loved romantic comedy 'You've Got Mail', starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Elle describes growing up with Ephron's film collection in the house and gaining a love of New York from 'Nora'. She also remembers how she connected to Ryan's character Kathleen - as a bookseller and advocate for children's literature - through one line spoken in a book store scene.

With some pieces, you really need to feel the floor shake. Experience Janáček’s jubilant Sinfonietta, as 12 trumpets line up across the stage and Janáček’s salute to his hometown of Brno goes supernova in a blaze of glory. It takes a lot to follow Bartók’s Cantata Profana and Ravel’s astonishing Piano Concerto for the Left Hand - but if anyone can do it, it’s Janáček.

Well, there’s no point holding back – and after all, BBC SO principal guest Dalia Stasevska is known for her dynamism and emotional commitment. The same can be said for the French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet; there are few greater living interpreters of Ravel’s dark and dazzling concerto. Add the BBC Symphony Chorus in Bartók’s powerful folk-inspired cantata, and it won’t just be the volume that astounds you.

WED 16:00 Composer of the Week (m002b699)
Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729)

It’s a Lyrical Life

In this third episode, we look at how Jacquet de La Guerre comes to create the very first performed opera written by a woman in France, in a musical landscape dominated by maestro Lully.

Sir James MacMillan: Where the Lugar meets the Glaisnock

Composer and conductor Sir James MacMillan joins the BBC National Orchestra of Wales to present the World Premiere of his new work for Euphonium and String Orchestra, Where the Lugar meets the Glaisnock, alongside short works by Holst and Vaughan Williams, and two of Stravinsky's "symphonies". Folk music abounds in three of the works: Holst wrote his own folk tune for his kaleidoscopic Capriccio, written originally for an American jazz band; Vaughan Williams alluded to English folk songs for his depiction of the vast and bleak landscape of the Fen Country; and Stravinsky disguised Russian folk themes in his tribute to Debussy, his Symphonies of Wind Instruments.

Where the Lugar meets the Glaisnock is a love letter to the location where the two rivers of the title meet in the Ayrshire town of Cumnock, where Sir James MacMillan grew up. He wrote it for euphonium in tribute to his grandfather who played the instrument in the local colliery bands, and also for the star euphonium player David Childs, who will give this World Premiere performance. To complete the concert, Stravinsky's response to the atrocities of World War II, which he called his "war symphony" - the Symphony in Three Movements.

With a nod to Mendelssohn’s famous wedding march the piece is performed by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

FRI 16:00 Composer of the Week (m002b6bl)
Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729)

The Prime Musician of the World

In this fifth episode, we conclude Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre's story, as she writes airs for the theatre and musical thanks for a new young king; and is still composing bold new music.

FRI 21:45 The Essay (m001qn1q)
The Little Secrets of Great Works

Frida Kahlo's Broken Column

In this series of The Essay, five leading cultural voices choose a great work of art and talk about a small, under-appreciated aspect of the piece that carries great meaning for them.

Art historian and author of The Story of Art Without Men, Katy Hessel draws our attention to the spine as a symbol of feminine strength and survival in Frida Kahlo's Broken Column. No matter how ambitious and brave she was in her painting, life was a constant battle: in love, in her physicality, and her struggle to be taken seriously as a woman and as an artist. Kahlo was stunted by her life – from her operations to her heartbreak, her miscarriage to her constant fight to be heard – Broken Column is a message to us that justice will come; life will be reborn.

FRI 22:00 Late Junction (m002b6bt)
Old songs, new tonalities

Jennifer Lucy Allan presents adventurous and experimental sounds from the musical universe, past, present and future. Amongst her picks are a solo improvisation at the organ from Ellen Arkbro and a strangely familiar-sounding track from the archive courtesy of Pierre Henry and Michel Colombier’s mid-60s collaborations. Plus: Berlin-based composer Catherine Lamb combines forces with New York’s Ghost Ensemble for new work exploring slow-moving microtonalities, and singer Quinie invokes her Scots ancestry.

Produced by Gabriel Francis
