Music on the Front Line
Caroline Wyatt
Clive Myrie is in conversation with fellow journalists about the music they’ve heard whilst reporting from the front line. With his own extensive experience of covering wars, and his personal love of opera and jazz, Clive and Caroline Wyatt share stories to reveal something of the power and significance of music when working in extreme conflict situations.
Caroline Wyatt is a BBC presenter and journalist. She began her career as a BBC foreign correspondent based in Berlin, Bonn, Moscow and Paris. During that period, she reported from Iraq, Kosovo, Chechnya, and the Middle East. She was then BBC Defence Correspondent covering operations in Iraq and Afghanistan before becoming BBC Religious Affairs Correspondent.
She is now a presenter for Radio 4 Saturday PM.
Here she recalls the music that accompanied her working life on the front line including Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Venus the Bringer of Peace from Holst’s The Planets and Bach’s Magnificat in D major.

Building a Library
Violinist Tasmin Little chooses her favourite recording of Brahms's String Sextet No. 1 in B flat, Op. 18 from the many available versions.
Virtuoso violinist Joseph Joachim led the ensemble that premiered Brahms's String Quartet No. 1 in October 1860. Brahms was 27 by the time he came to write his first Sextet. He clearly enjoyed the challenge, revelling in the unusually rich sonorities at his disposal. The Sextet also features significant use of Brahms's trademark ‘across the bar’ phrases of irregular length, employed here with maturity and delightfully telling effect.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (m0029prm)
Terry Gilliam
Terry Gilliam is one of the world’s most imaginative and original directors. He first made his mark more than 50 years ago, with the animated opening sequence of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, when a giant foot stomped on the titles with a burst of flatulence.
That spirit of mischief, fun and creative adventure has informed many of his films: they include Time Bandits, Brazil, The Fisher King and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, working with stars such as Matt Damon, Uma Thurman, Brad Pitt and Robin Williams.
He’d be the first to admit that life as a film maker can be complicated: he’s faced natural disasters, budget overruns and clashes with studio executives. But he has no plans to retire: now in his 85th year he’s working on a new film called Carnival at the End of Days starring Johnny Depp as Satan and Jeff Bridges as God.
Terry's list of musical passions includes Richard Strauss, Berlioz and Delius.

SUN 16:00 Music for Holy Week (m0029prr)
Easter: A Seasonal Journey. Sacred Music for Holy Week
Radio 3 marks Palm Sunday with a series of concerts from across Europe.
1600 – 1800: Bach’s St John Passion from Helsinki, featuring the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Chamber Choir, and conductor Nicholas Collon with soloists tenor Nicholas Mulroy (Evangelist) and baritone Matthew Brook (Jesus)
1800 - 1820: A Patchwork Passion (excerpts). Another chance to hear the BBC Singers in a modern day re-telling of the Passion Story with music by Pablo Casals, J S Bach, and Roxanna Panufnik. Narrated by Clive Myrie and performed by the BBC Singers and conductor Nicholas Chalmers with organist Martin Baker.
1820 – 1940: Two alternative musical approaches to Bach's Passions form the basis of our next concert, from Munich. Franz Liszt's "Via Crucis", a 14 movement work, with an introductory hymn, for soloists, choir and piano, expressively traces the stations of the cross. The human drama of poverty and abandonment, which takes on a sad form in the famous fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about a girl selling matches, forms the literary basis for the "Passion" by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lang. In his "Little Match Girl Passion" from 2007, he brings the girl's ordeal into our time with mystical visions and texts from Bach's "St. Matthew Passion". Performed by the Bavarian Radio Chorus, pianist Herbert Schuch and conducted by Peter Dijkstra, from the Prince Regent Theatre in Munich.
1940 – 2100: Passion Concert from the Danish Radio Vocal Ensemble conducted by Marcus Creed: Scarlatti’s 10-part masterwork Stabat Mater, is performed alongside another setting of the same text by the contemporary Polish composer Anna Ignatowicz. The choir also sing other motets for Passiontide by Antonio Lotti, Johann Kuhnau and Goffredo Petrassi.
SUN 21:00 20th Century Radicals (m0029prt)
Varèse: The New World, Machines and the Noise of the City
Kate Molleson and Gillian Moore continue their new landmark series for BBC Radio 3 exploring the pivotal 'modern' musical works of the 20th century, the groundbreaking composers who created them, and the radical cultural and artistic movements which gave rise to them. This is a story about a hundred years of change. Of war. Of oppression. Of steps towards equality. Of censorship. Of rapid, inescapable technological advancement. Of machines. Of transport. Of science... And it's the story of how art and music responded, the story of the composers who defined the 20th century, who created 'modern' musical art which would shock, appall and fascinate in equal measure, changing the way we listen for ever.
In this second episode we are in America at the end of the 1910s. A French composer in his early 30s arrives in New York. As he steps off the boat and begins to find his feet in this unfamiliar land, his ears meet an array of novel sounds and his mind is full with groundbreaking music he has carried with him from Europe. The New World would prove to be a place of transformation for Varèse. Surrounded by a circle of new artistic acquaintances as well as the sheer noise of the traffic, building work and sirens of the city, he would go on to reinvent the sound of the orchestra, starting with the first work he composed in the USA: Amériques.

Chaos Quartet at Wigmore Hall

Mozart's Last Years
1787 - Highs and Lows
Donald Macleod follows Mozart through a year of emotional extremes, from glory to grief.
All this week, we’ll be hearing Mozart’s famous swansong, his Requiem, in its entirety as Donald Macleod charts the highs and lows of the composer's last five years, from veneration to humiliation and back again. We hear how Mozart coped with all that life threw at him and somehow managed to compose many of the works he’s most loved for today.
Today, we meet Mozart in Prague, where he’s flavour of the month and his new opera has the whole city gripped by “Figaro-mania”. But back home in Vienna, his world is about to come crashing down around him.

Sounds of Wild Poland
Dawn
The sounds of wild Poland with nature recordist Izabela Dłuzyk is a long, immersive listen to the sounds of the wetlands and forests of the eastern Polish borderlands. Izabela has been recording since childhood, teaching herself the sounds of species by ear alone, as she was born without sight. She was given her tape recorder at the age of ten and went on long recording walks with her grandfather in her home town of Gdansk on the Baltic coast, capturing the voices of birds, frogs and anything they came across. These early adventures set her on the path to a life-long passion for recording. 'Nature recording is an adventure,' she says 'a way of delving into another world.' In this episode we're listening to the sounds of dawn in the Biebrza marshes and the Bialowieza primeval forest that's half in Poland and half in Belarus.

Mozart's Last Years
1789 - Travels and Tribulations
Donald Macleod follows Mozart on an eventful PR exercise, hitching a ride with a prince.
All this week, we’ll be hearing Mozart’s famous swansong, his Requiem, in its entirety as Donald Macleod charts the highs and lows of the composer's last five years, from veneration to humiliation and back again. We hear how Mozart coped with all that life threw at him and somehow managed to compose many of the works he’s most beloved for today.
Today, we follow Mozart on a road trip to Berlin, in princely company, with high hopes of an audience with the king of Prussia. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, but when he’s finally reunited with his wife Constanze, he finds her dangerously ill.

Oramo conducts Mahler's Fourth Symphony
The BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo in Dorothy Howell's Keats-inspired Lamia and, with soprano Anu Komsi, Weill's Der neue Orpheus. Plus Mahler's Symphony No 4.
Live from the Barbican, London. Presented by Ian Skelly.
Dorothy Howell: Lamia
Kurt Weill: Der neue Orpheus, Op. 15
Interval
Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 4 in G major
Anu Komsi (soprano)
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Sakari Oramo (conductor)
A jingle of sleighbells, a flurry of flutes…it doesn’t take much to set Mahler’s Fourth Symphony in motion. But with Mahler, even the gentlest sounds can create a universe. From playful opening to final, blissful vision of heaven, the Fourth is a musical fairy tale like no other – an enchanting finish to a concert that begins with Dorothy Howell’s fantasy of a shape-shifting serpent and Kurt Weill’s typically feisty retelling of the myth of Orpheus.
There’s nothing quite like that, either - part song, part violin concerto, but all Weill. The BBC Symphony Orchestra is lucky enough to have its own magical shape-shifter. Principal conductor Sakari Oramo is also a superb violinist and tonight he stars alongside soprano Anu Komsi at the centre of a concert where wonder comes as standard and nothing (except the music) is quite what it seems.

Mozart's Last Years
1790 - Royally Rejected
Donald Macleod journeys through Mozart’s frustrating and fruitless penultimate year.

Classical music for your journey
Take time out with a 30-minute soundscape of classical music - from the romantic depth of Bottesini’s Gran Concerto for double bass to the luminous serenity of Ola Gjeilo’s Ubi Caritas. Haydn’s shadowed Trio in F-sharp minor offers classical elegance with a twist of emotional unrest, while Brahms’ Intermezzo Op.117 No. 1 wraps us in quiet introspection. Agustín Barrios Mangoré offers a tenderness with his timeless guitar miniature Julia Florida. We also shine a light on voices less often heard: Leokadiya Kashperova’s hauntingly atmospheric Night for female chorus and finish with Alice Mary Smith’s second piece of her graceful Six Short Pieces for Piano.

Sit back and listen to the sounds of wild Poland - the wetlands and forests rich with wildlife recorded by Izabela Dłuzyk.
In this episode we're in the Bialowieza primeval forest that's half in the far east of Poland and half in Belarus.
The forest is one of the last stretches of the ancient forest that once spread across the whole European plain. Some of the oak trees there are many centuries old. Numberless generations of birds and animals have lived up in their branches and below in their undergrowth. In this episode we’ll hear the sounds of the trees themselves.

Today, we reach 1791.The story of Mozart’s last year is still one that grips the popular imagination, coloured by enigma and intrigue. It’s a year of high risks and significant rewards, and it seems the composer’s luck is finally about to turn… but too late…

Sounds of Wild Poland
Night
Sit back and lose yourself in the Sounds of Wild Poland with nature recordist Izabela Dłuzyk. 'Nature recording is an adventure,' she says, 'a way of delving into another world.' Izabela has been recording since childhood, teaching herself the sounds of species by ear alone. She believes that anyone can become a recordist - there's no need for fancy equipment, all you need is a phone and the willingness to listen. Izabela was born without sight, but that hasn't held her back. Darkness presents no problems for her and in this episode she's recording at night in the ancient woodland in the eastern borderlands of Poland.
Recorded and presented by Izabela Dłuzyk.
Produced by Monica Whitlock
Mixed by Tom Brignell

Kasia Pietrzko Trio in concert
‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades.
On this Friday’s edition of ‘Round Midnight, Soweto presents session highlights from the award-winning Polish pianist Kasia Pietrzko and her trio, recorded live at the NDR Studio in Hamburg late last year.
A rising star in the Polish jazz scene, Kasia has found fans in leading jazz artists including American pianist Aaron Parks, and she also worked with the late Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko. Her third album “Fragile Ego” was released in 2023, accompanied by bassist Andrzej Święs and drummer Piotr Budniak.
We will hear some of Kasia's compositions from “Fragile Ego” in tonight’s programme.
