They also explore the enduring influence of mysticism on 20th Century figures like jazz composer-performer Alice Coltrane, and the meeting of multi faiths in the work of contemporary composer Reena Esmail.

Liszt's Totentanz in Building a Library with Iain Burnside and Andrew McGregor

Andrew McGregor with the best new recordings of classical music.

1405
Marina Frolova-Walker makes her pick of the best new releases.

1500
Building a Library
Pianist Iain Burnside choses his favourite recording of Liszt's Totentanz.

Composed in the 1830s and revised in the 1850s, Liszt's Totentanz (Dance of Death) was possibly inspired by a fresco Liszt saw in the Campo Santo during a visit to Pisa, The Triumph of Death. It is a fiendishly exhilarating piece for piano and orchestra based on the Dies irae plainchant from the medieval Mass for the Dead, exuding an aura of supernatural fear and terror with piano writing that challenges even the most virtuosic soloists.

1545
Record of the Week: Andrew’s top pick.

Imtiaz Dharker was awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 2014, and has published seven collections of her verse. She’s performed her poems to thousands of students at Poetry Live events, a scheme founded by her late husband Simon Rhys Powell.

Imtiaz was born in Lahore in Pakistan and was six months old when her family moved to Glasgow. There she grew up as – in her words – “a Muslim Calvinist”.

When she was 17 she fell in love with her first husband, married in secret and eloped to India. As a result she was disowned by her family, but began to publish her first poems. She illustrates all her collections with pen and ink drawings.

SUN 19:15 Between the Ears (m0028hg9)
Listen In

Radio was the first-ever form of home-based mass entertainment. Plenty has been written about its history from the broadcasters' point of view, but what did the first listeners make of the newcomer? First-person testimony from the 'Golden Age of Radio' is scant but a recent discovery in the Bodleian Library in Oxford is now providing far more detail and colour - all of it very lively and some of it rather unexpected.

In 1938, the BBC commissioned two Bristol-based women called Hilda Jennings and Winifred Gill to conduct a grassroots survey on the impact of broadcasting on everyday life. They published a useful pamphlet on their findings. Winifred Gill left her archive to the Bodleian Library in Oxford where producer Beaty Rubens recently uncovered the two hand-written exercise books in which she had kept her research material, much of which didn't make the final cut.

Recorded in front of an audience and to accompany a major exhibition at the Bodleian Library, actors have brought this material to life, while an archive-based musical soundtrack by composer Emily Levy gives an impression of the impact of radio on British homes.

Actors: Alison Reid, Alice Lamb, Andrew McGillan, Zara Ramm

Musicians: Matthew Bourne, Richard Ormrod

Producer for Just Radio: Beaty Rubens

SUN 19:45 Sunday Feature (m001n80r)
A Powerful Crush

Letters from a teenage Prince of Wales to Mary Hamilton have largely been seen as missives of love, showing a rather sweet side of the boy who’d grow up to become the debauched George IV.

Sophie Coulombeau, Lecturer in English Literature at the University of York and Co-Investigator on the research project Unlocking the Mary Hamilton Papers argues there’s a darker side to the story.

Mary Hamilton was his sisters’ governess. She didn’t welcome the Prince’s attentions, had no desire to become his mistress or wife and she was terrified about the effect that his advances might have on her precious reputation.

George’s pursuit looks less like a harmless crush and more like a case of 18th-century sexual harassment in the workplace.

Sophie retells the story of this 1779 summer of “love”, following clues from the library at Kew Palace, through the butterflies of Kew Gardens to the heart of power and politics outside Westminster.

She is joined by author and historian Sally Holloway, curator Polly Putnam and the Fawcett Society’s Alesha De-Freitas.

Readings are by Scarlett Brookes and Will Kirk and the producer is Sarah Bowen.

Founded in 1999, the BBC New Generation Artists scheme supports some of the world’s most exciting young instrumentalists, ensembles and singers at the start of their international careers, through performance and broadcast opportunities on Radio 3. Now numbering well over 150, the list of alumni features many of the biggest names in classical music and jazz, including Paul Lewis (piano), Alina Ibragimova (violin), the Ebene and Pavel Haas Quartets, Misha Mullov-Abbado (jazz bass), Alison Balsom (trumpet), Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha (soprano), Mahan Esfahani (harpsichord), Anastasia Kobekina (cello) and many more.

In this special day of programming Radio 3 celebrates 25 years of superlative music-making with live and specially recorded performances from NGAs former and current, including accordionist Ryan Corbett.

We also have the next of Radio 3’s 25 for 25: Sounds of the Century – a series of brand new commissions celebrating and commemorating some of the biggest events of the 21st century so far.

This week, in Trial and Error Finnish composer Sauli Zinovjev reflects on the trial of Saddam Hussein which was widely shared on the newly launched You Tube in 2005. The piece for New Generation Artist cellist Santiago Canon-Valencia uses the trial as a metaphor for a broader human experience: the constant cycle of trying, failing, and trying again. Co-commissioned with the Henry Barber Trust.

MON 21:45 The Essay (m00288s4)
Women at the Keyboard

Wanda Landowska

In this Essay series, musicologist Natasha Loges shines the spotlight on five women pianists from across the globe. Each woman faced difference challenges, not only of gender and race, but also social class, sexuality and family responsibilities. Each life unfolded against a tumultuous background of World Wars, the Cultural Revolution and the Vietnam War. These women confronted personal and professional challenges – often controversially – to find creative fulfilment as musicians.

Programme 1: Wanda Landowska

Polish harpsichordist Wanda Landowska (1879–1959) made the first recording of the Goldberg Variations in 1933 and played a huge role in reviving the popularity of the harpsichord in the early 20th century. Her colourful life took her to Berlin, Paris and eventually to the US where she lived openly with her female partner, Denise Restout. Historian and biographer Annegret Fauser brings details from Ladowska's unpublished diaries to life, and we hear extracts from Landowska’s recordings.

Shostakovich's Symphony No.10

Benjamin Britten: Piano Concerto

Dmitry Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10 in E minor

Benjamin Grosvenor (piano)
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Elim Chan (conductor)

Every piece of music makes its own world. Shostakovich faced the terror of Stalin’s Russia and composed a symphony that echoed down the twentieth century. The young Benjamin Britten set out to impress with a Piano Concerto that plays fabulous games with light and shade. Elizabeth Ogonek, meanwhile, simply gazed into a moonlit sky – and heard sounds of unforgettable enchantment.

That’s just the starting point for this concert with two popular guests of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Pianist Benjamin Grosvenor is a Proms favourite – the perfect interpreter for Britten’s pre-War showpiece. Elim Chan, meanwhile, is simply one of the most sought-after conductors of our times. She gave the world premiere of Moondog; expect her to drive straight to the dark heart of Shostakovich’s monumental symphony, too.

TUE 21:45 The Essay (m00288v3)
Women at the Keyboard

Majoie Hajary

In this Essay series, musicologist Natasha Loges shines the spotlight on five women pianists from across the globe. Each woman faced difference challenges, not only of gender and race, but also social class, sexuality and family responsibilities. Each life unfolded against a tumultuous background of World Wars, the Cultural Revolution and the Vietnam War. These women confronted personal and professional challenges – often controversially – to find creative fulfilment as musicians.

Programme 2: Majoie Hajary

Born in Suriname to descendants of enslaved Africans and indentured labourers from India and China, pianist-composer Majoie Hajary (1921–2017) studied in Amsterdam and with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. We focus on how her careful self-construction as an exotic ‘Hindustani’ fed into her controversial success in 1940s Germany. After marrying Roland Garros, nephew of the famous flying pioneer, she abandoned performing but continued to compose music inspired by her multiracial background. Hajary’s biographer Ellen de Vries tells us more about her music as well as extracts of her intriguing, genre-crossing compositions, such as the piano work 'Mera Bap' ('My father' in Hindi), and her recently performed opera La larme d’or (The Golden Tear) about Suriname’s colonial history.

WED 19:30 Radio 3 in Concert (m00288td)
Earth Unwrapped: Choral music by Britten, Fauré, Mahler, Porter and Schütz

Presented in Imogen Holst’s arrangement for chamber orchestra and voices, Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb sets the extraordinary poetry of 19th-century asylum inmate Christopher Smart. An ecstatic ode to the divine he perceived in abundance in the world around him despite his confinement – whether in his cat’s morning ritual, the simple beauty of flowers, or the bravery of a mouse – Smart’s text is brought to life by some of Britten’s most masterly word-setting.

Mahler’s ‘O garish world, long since thou hast lost me’ takes a contrasting perspective: a rejection of the world’s mundane tumult in favour of a personal ‘heaven’ of love and song. Meanwhile Kim Porter – herself a former BBC Singer – sets Harlem Renaissance poet Georgia Douglas Johnson’s ode to the self-expression and the pursuit of a free and fulfilled life.

At the heart of the programme is Fauré’s Requiem, written shortly after the death of the composer’s father in 1888. A serene, consoling vision of peace and ‘happy deliverance’ after death, the work remains one of the most enduringly popular treasures of choral music, and is performed here in the original chamber orchestra version rediscovered by editor John Rutter in Paris’s Bibliothèque nationale after a century of neglect.

Recorded live at Kings Place, London, on Friday 31st January 2025. Presented by Ian Skelly.

WED 21:45 The Essay (m00288tg)
Women at the Keyboard

Gu Shengying

In this Essay series, musicologist Natasha Loges shines the spotlight on five women pianists from across the globe. Each woman faced difference challenges, not only of gender and race, but also social class, sexuality and family responsibilities. Each life unfolded against a tumultuous background of World Wars, the Cultural Revolution and the Vietnam War. These women confronted personal and professional challenges – often controversially – to find creative fulfilment as musicians.

Programme 3: Gu Shengying

International piano competition winner Gu Shengying (1937-67) initially had a huge career in mid-century China and beyond, but fell victim to the Cultural Revolution and took her own life at the age of 29. Political exigency shaped Shengying’s life – in this case, Communist feminism, which promoted a ‘masculinised’ gender equality in which Chinese women were celebrated as a huge revolutionary force, but were expected to dress modestly, with short hair. While classical concert performance is usually read as an expression of bourgeois individuality, Shengying’s performances in the 1950s-60s shifted into proletarian settings like factories. Despite attempts to adapt, she was persecuted by anti-capitalist groups. Scholar Ren Zixi, an expert on classical music under Communism adds her insights and extracts from Gu's diaries, as well as archival recordings of Shengying.

“A dazzling tour de force” was how The Scotsman described a solo recital by Yeol Eum Son – going on to praise her “vital emotional connection with the music”. You can’t have missed the buzz around this remarkable Korean pianist; now hear her for yourself, as she joins conductor Antonio Mendez and the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Prokofiev’s ferocious Second Piano Concerto. Few living pianists play it better.

And it’s Antonio Mendez's debut appearance at the Barbican with the BBC SO too, and everything about this concert promises to be electrifying – whether Respighi’s teeming, technicolour musical postcards from Rome, or a striking new work by the American composer James Lee III. Inspired by Biblical visions and the wonders of astronomy, it’s caused quite a sensation in the USA. You’re about to discover why.

These women confronted personal and professional challenges – often controversially – to find creative fulfilment as musicians.

Programme 4: Chiquinha Gonzaga

We head to the other side of the globe with Chiquinha Gonzaga (1847–1935), Brazil’s first woman conductor. An all-round trailblazer, the part-mestiza Gonzaga repeatedly overcame barriers of gender, race and class. She boldly integrated popular Brazilian music in her composition, and her pioneering genre marchinha carnavalesca helped define the sound-world of the Rio carnival. As a woman, she defied the expectations of her Catholic, middle-class and patriarchal background in late-19th century Brazil by leaving abusive relationships, and eventually found happiness in her fifties with a partner over thirty years younger than herself. Pianist Maria Teresa Madeira gives us her take on this extraordinary woman, and we hear her recordings of Chiquinha's music.

BBC New Generation Artists celebration plus Liszt from Switzerland

Linton Stephens showcases the best performances by BBC orchestras, choirs, ensembles and other great performing groups from Europe and around the globe. This week on Classical Live, we celebrate 25 years of the BBC New Generation Artists scheme. FRI 21:45 The Essay (m00288vs)
Women at the Keyboard

Philippa Schuyler

In this Essay series, musicologist Natasha Loges shines the spotlight on five women pianists from across the globe. Each woman faced difference challenges, not only of gender and race, but also social class, sexuality and family responsibilities. Each life unfolded against a tumultuous background of World Wars, the Cultural Revolution and the Vietnam War. These women confronted personal and professional challenges – often controversially – to find creative fulfilment as musicians.

Programme 5. Philippa Schuyler

American pianist-composer and international journalist Philippa Schuyler (1931–1967) was the daughter of a black journalist and a white heiress. Called ’Harlem's Mozart', Schuyler was a child prodigy. Unable to escape racial discrimination or accept her own racial identity, she shifted her career outside the USA, including Latin America, Asia and Africa. Her travels inspired the integration of folk music in her piano compositions. Later a war correspondent and a missionary, Schuyler died in a helicopter crash while working in Vietnam. Schuyler's biographer is pianist Sarah Masterson who gives us her take on the life and music of this brave young woman, and we hear Sarah's recordings of Schuyler's works.

FRI 22:00 Late Junction (m00288vv)
Felinto and Saba Alizadeh in session

Verity Sharp presents the latest in our series of remote collaborations, bringing together avant-garde Brazilian producer Felinto and Iranian kamancheh virtuoso and sonic experimentalist Saba Alizadeh.

A key figure in São Paulo’s underground scene, Felinto is both a political agitator and a boundary-pushing musician. His diverse projects — ranging from film and theatre compositions to immersive installations — blend punk, dub, ambient, noise, and free jazz. Through his music, he explores themes of gender-based violence, conflict mediation, and the Black presence in electronic music, while also reclaiming public spaces for political art.

For this remote collaboration, Felinto joins forces with Tehran-born Saba Alizadeh, whose work merges the personal and the political through electroacoustic processing, improvisation, and mixed media. A master of the kamancheh, the traditional Iranian bowed string instrument, Alizadeh also incorporates modular synthesizers, field recordings, and no-input mixers to craft richly immersive sonic landscapes.
